Irish in the NFL: Sheldon Day to the Colts

Former Notre Dame defensive lineman and member of the 2019 NFC Champion San Francisco 49ers, Sheldon Day, is headed home as he’s inked a one-year deal with his hometown Indianapolis Colts.

Former Notre Dame star and four-year NFL veteran Sheldon Day has a new home as the defensive lineman signed a deal with the Indianapolis Colts on Wednesday.  The defensive lineman finds his third NFL franchise having previously spent time in Jacksonville before going to San Francisco in mid-2017 and eventually playing on their NFC Championship team last year.

Day rejoins defensive line-mate DeForest Buckner who he played alongside in San Francisco and who the Colts traded a first round pick for last week.

In his four NFL seasons Day has six career sacks and 53 tackles, 14 of which were recorded for a loss.

Day returns home as he grew up in Indianapolis and attended Warren Central High School and was the runner up in the 2011 voting for the state’s Mr. Football award.  In Indianapolis he will rejoin his former Notre Dame teammate Quenton Nelson who will be entering his third NFL season in 2020.  The two played together at Notre Dame in both the 2014 and 2015 seasons.

Day’s deal with the Colts is said to be for one year with the financial terms not yet being announced.

Instant analysis of Colts signing DT Sheldon Day

Analyzing the signing of DT Sheldon Day.

The Indianapolis Colts made a small move Wednesday, signing defensive tackle Sheldon Day to a one-year deal.

After making plenty of noise during the first week of free agency, the Colts will be adding some depth to necessary positions. This was one of those moves as they had a concerning lack of depth at the nose tackle position along the defensive line.

Depth chart

This signing clears up some things that may have already been thought of. With Day joining the ranks, he and Grover Stewart will likely share time at the one-technique while the latter is most likely going to be the starter entering training camp.

This also solidifies who will be working at the three-technique. It was expected to be the shiny new addition in DeForest Buckner and while he can still see some work at the one-tech on third downs, Denico Autry and Tyquan Lewis will join Buckner in the B-gap.

Draft impact

Even after the Colts traded for Buckner last week, they were still thought of as a team that could look to add more depth and talent to the interior defensive line with a Day 2 pick. After signing Day, that likely isn’t going to happen.

Of course, general manager Chris Ballard is obsessed with beefing up the depth on the defensive line. However, they have much more pressing needs to address early in the draft—especially since they no longer have a first-round pick.

Free agency impact

How Day’s signing will impact the salary cap for the Colts isn’t known as of this writing, but it shouldn’t be much. The Colts entered this week with roughly $28 million to work with so they are clear there. Plus it is a one-year deal, which means there are no future implications on the salary cap.

This also likely means the Colts are done adding to the defensive line in free agency and can begin adding depth to other areas like wide receiver and potentially even cornerback.

3 things to know about Colts’ new DT Sheldon Day

Some things to know about Sheldon Day.

The Indianapolis Colts announced the signing of defensive tackle Sheldon Day to a one-year deal, adding some much needed depth to the nose tackle position along the interior defensive line.

The 25-year-old spent the last two and a half seasons with the San Francisco 49ers, including winning a Super Bowl in 2019. He was mostly a rotational piece working at the one-technique, which is where he will likely stay with the Colts.

Here are three things to know about the Colts’ new defensive tackle in Day:

Colts fans should be relatively familiar with Day’s name. Though he wasn’t a star rising through the ranks, he is an Indianapolis native who graduated from Warren Central High School and eventually went on to play at Notre Dame for the Fighting Irish.

Day had a monster senior year with Notre Dame. That 2015 season included 15.5 tackles for loss and 4.0 sacks. It wasn’t enough to make him a Day 2 pick, but he did wind up getting drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL draft.

Report: Colts to sign DT Sheldon Day

Colts are expected to sign the veteran Sheldon Day.

The Indianapolis Colts are expected to sign defensive tackle Sheldon Day to a one-year deal, per Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.

After adding DeForest Buckner to the interior defensive line as the starting three-technique, the Colts needed to add depth at the nose tackle position. Day provides a veteran presence there while working alongside Grover Stewart.

A fourth-round pick out of Notre Dame in the 2016 NFL draft with the Jaguars, Day has been rotational piece to the 49ers defensive line for the last two-plus seasons. He reunites with Buckner, both of which came through in the 2016 draft.

Day doesn’t offer much as a pass rusher, evident by his 6.0 sacks and 10 quarterback hits in 56 career games. However, he is a solid rotational piece to work in with Stewart, who is entering the final year of his rookie contract.

The Colts needed to add some depth to the one-technique defensive tackle position, especially since the only true player at that spot on the roster was Stewart.

Day presents a low-risk depth addition to help shore up some of the interior while competing with Stewart for the starting nose tackle position.

5 players in the Super Bowl the Jets should avoid in free agency

Chris Jones and Matt Moore are among players the Jets should avoid that will be playing in Super Bowl LIV down in Miami, Fla.

The Jets haven’t exactly been the wisest of spenders in free agency over the past couple of years.

That’s why Mike Maccagnan is no longer in charge and Joe Douglas will shortly begin his first offseason of calling the shots. With team officials most likely tuning in to Sunday’s big game, they need to also make a list of players that just don’t make sense for Gang Green. It’s not necessarily that they’re bad players, but more so that the Jets don’t have the cap or roster flexibility to add them in free agency.

Yesterday, the Jets Wire made a list of six players the Jets should target in free agency. This time around, we will take a look at five players the Jets should avoid come March.

While Chris Jones could be an intriguing option to supplement the Jets 3-4 scheme, they don’t have the luxury to add a player of Chris Jones’ caliber on the defensive line.

Jones is a versatile three-down lineman, who played at defensive end before Kansas City’s switch to a 4-3 base scheme this past offseason. In 2018, Jones recorded 15.5 sacks. Only 26, Jones seems like a likely candidate for a big payday on the open market, especially if he is able to help Kansas City raise the Lombardi Trophy on Sunday.

The former second-rounder has been tremendous at stopping the run and also has a knack for getting after opposing quarterbacks. In 13 games played this season, Jones totaled nine sacks to go along with 36 tackles and 20 quarterback hits.

It’s not to say that Jones wouldn’t be an excellent addition to their defensive front, but the Jets have too many other glaring needs at the moment. The additions of Henry Anderson and Quinnen Williams make Jones a luxury that New York simply can’t afford until they address the outside linebacker and cornerback positions first.

49ers Super Bowl Berth Earns Pair of Notre Dame Products Trip to Big Game

Sheldon Day and Mike McGlinchey will be wearing the red, gold and white of the 49ers when they meet the Kansas City Chiefs on February 2 in Miami.

When the San Francisco 49ers finished their domination of the Green Bay Packers at Levi’s Stadium on Sunday, a pair of Notre Dame alumni earned their first trips to the Super Bowl.

Sheldon Day and Mike McGlinchey will be wearing the red, gold and white of the 49ers when they meet the Kansas City Chiefs on February 2 in Miami.

Day is in his fourth NFL season after spending a year and a half in Jacksonville before being waived in 2017 and picked up by the 49ers.

Day played in all 16 regular season games for San Francisco this season, making 15 tackles and recording one sack this year.

Day played on Notre Dame’s defensive line from 2012-15 and was a valuable rotational piece in the the 2012 year that finished with a 12-0 regular season. He had 32 tackles for loss in four seasons at Notre Dame.

Joining Day in Miami will be Mike McGlinchey who reaches the Super Bowl in just his second NFL season.

McGlinchey was a key part of why Notre Dame won the Joe Moore Award for the nation’s best offensive line in 2017 as he and Quenton Nelson of the Colts were both drafted in the first round the following spring.

McGlinchey was key in the 49ers dominating run game as the right tackle was part of the reason they ran for 285 yards and attempted just eight passes all day.

The 49ers will meet the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIV as the Chiefs have no active former Notre Dame players on their roster but do feature former Irish tight end Alize Mack on their practice squad and former Notre Dame offensive lineman Andy Heck who has coached Kansas City’s offensive line since 2013.

Notre Dame’s NFL Conference Championship Representation

The hometown and 7.5 point favorite San Francisco 49ers employ a pair of former Notre Dame stars in former top ten pick, offensive tackle Mike McGlinchey and former Irish defensive tackle, Sheldon Day.

To me there isn’t a better day of professional football all year than what today brings.  AFC and NFC Championship Games, an all day affair of football between four usually very good teams.

If you’re like me and most of America, your favorite NFL squad was eliminated from Super Bowl contention long ago and you don’t have a dog in either of the fights this Sunday.

If you’re a Notre Dame fan looking for a team to get behind then the AFC game that kicks off just after 3:00 pm E.T. will be tough sledding as neither the Tennessee Titans or Kansas City Chiefs have any former Notre Dame players on their rosters.

Look into the NFC game however and you may get a little bit conflicted.

The hometown and 7.5 point favorite San Francisco 49ers employ a pair of former Notre Dame stars in former top ten pick, offensive tackle Mike McGlinchey and former Irish defensive tackle, Sheldon Day.

McGlinchey battled through a knee issue earlier this season that ultimately led to him getting a scope, missing four games but ultimately helping the 49ers to the third most rushing yards in the league this regular season.

Day played in all 16 games this regular season for the 49ers, recording 15 total tackles and one sack along the way.

When the 49ers kickoff against the Green Bay Packers at 6:40 pm E.T. today the Packers will have a former Fighting Irish star as Dexter Williams will be wearing the iconic Packers colors.

Don’t expect to see much of the former Notre Dame speedster however as Williams had just five rush attempts all regular season.

Enjoy the games and your Sunday.

WATCH: Sheldon Day gets 49ers’ 1st sack on Matt Ryan

The 49ers defensive line finally broke through for a sack in the third quarter.

The 49ers’ defensive line Sunday was having a lot of pass rush success without anything to show for it on the stat sheet.

That changed early in the third quarter when Sheldon Day blew through the middle of the Falcons’ offensive line to wrap up Matt Ryan for a sack.

The sack put the Falcons way behind the sticks and they eventually punted.
