Boston’s Jordan Walsh helps lead Maine Celtics to 2024 G League Finals

The win secured Maine a spot in the G League Finals vs. the Oklahoma City Blue.

Boston Celtics rookie forward Jordan Walsh scored 15 points with 7 rebounds and 3 steals as the Maine Celtics beat the Long Island Nets (the G League affiliate of the Brooklyn Nets) in the G League Eastern Conference Finals this week. Walsh joins the newest addition to the regular roster, Neemias Queta, in the series along with Boston’s remaining two way players, JD Davison, and Drew Peterson in playing the Blue for the G League title.

The win secured Maine a spot in the G League Finals vs. the Oklahoma City Blue (the developmental affiliate of the Oklahoma City Thunder), which will be a three-game series that will see at least one finals tilt played on Maine’s home court in Portland.

The folks behind the CLNS Media “Celtics All Access” YouTube channel put up some highlights from Maine’s recent win vs. Long Island via Celtics Blog’s Noa Dalzell. Check them out below!

On this day: Kevin McHale gets 56; Sam Cassell signed; Jayson Tatum, Jordan Walsh born

On this day in Celtics history, legend Kevin McHale scored 56 points, Sam Cassell signed with Boston, and Jayson Tatum was born.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, champion reserve guard Sam Cassell signed with the storied franchise as a late-season addition in the Celtics’ push for Banner 17.

Cassell had played just under half — a total of 38 games of the 2007-08 NBA season — with the Los Angeles Clippers before he managed to negotiate a buyout at the end of the month of February. After listening to the pitches of several NBA teams, Cassell ultimately decided to hitch his proverbial wagon to the team, inking an agreement as an unrestricted free agent on this date in 2008 to finish the season in green and white.

The Florida State product would play an important role for the Celtics in the postseason, and after being reunited with former teammates Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen won his third and final title.

Celtics’ Jordan Walsh is getting praise from Kristaps Porzingis, Payton Pritchard

Walsh has been putting up some modest numbers while showing us flashes of why the Celtics decided to take him in the second round of the 2023 draft.

For much of the NBA’s 2023-24 season, rookie Boston Celtics forward Jordan Walsh has been more of an idea than a player for the parent club, the Arkansas alum spending most of his floor time suiting up for the Maine Celtics in Portland as he hones his craft to an NBA-ready level.

But the Texan wing has been getting some playing time in Boston in recent days, putting up some modest numbers while showing us flashes of why the Celtics decided to take him in the second round of the 2023 draft. His teammates have taken note, with both star Boston big man Kristaps Porzingis and backup combo guard Payton Pritchard singing his praises postgame.

The hosts of the CLNS Media “How Bout Them Celtics!” podcast dug in deeper on how Walsh has been doing in his limited run at the NBA level this season.

Jordan Walsh knew his moment had come before scoring first NBA points

Jordan Walsh discussed his first NBA basket after the Boston Celtics defeated the Memphis Grizzlies.

Jordan Walsh scored his first NBA points on Sunday (Feb. 4) as the Boston Celtics dismantled an injury-ravaged Memphis Grizzlies. He played most of the fourth quarter, allowing the Celtics starters to gain some additional rest after building a sizeable lead throughout the game.

Shortly after checking in for Boston, Walsh was presented with an opportunity to do what millions of people worldwide have dreamed of: score his first-ever bucket in the NBA. It ended up being a two-handed dunk, drawing an ovation from the bench and sending the fans in attendance crazy.

Walsh detailed his thought process when speaking with the media following the game.

“Oshae (Brissett) was pushing it in transition,” Walsh said. “I’m taught to run to the corner. So I just sprinted out and nobody was in front of me. So Oshae kicked it ahead, I caught it and I saw a lane to the rim and I was like, ‘This is the time.’ And I just jumped as high as I could and just dunked the ball. After that moment, I was like, ‘I’m getting that game ball.'”

Walsh has spent the majority of the season with the Maine Celtics as he continues to work on his game and get himself NBA-ready.

He signed a four-year deal with the Celtics this past summer, so there’s no rush for him to try to crack the rotation on the main roster.

However, there’s no denying that he is already winning the hearts of the fan base due to his commitment to defense and willingness to make the right play rather than call his own number. Fans will now be hoping they see Walsh get his second NBA bucket in the coming weeks or months.

Neemias Queta gives an update on Jordan Walsh’s progress with the Maine Celtics

“It shows – you can tell the improvement he’s made,” said Queta.

Boston Celtics two way big man Neemias Queta has had the privilege of watching rookie Celtics wing Jordan Walsh grow as a player with the Maine Celtics this season. Speaking to Celtics Blog’s Noa Dalzell, Queta gave an update on Walsh with the Portland version of the Celtics at the G League level. “It’s been a good situation,” he explained.

“I feel like Jordan’s been doing a great job for us, whether down in Maine or in Boston,” added Queta. “We had a similar path, going through from our first year getting drafted and being in the G League right away.”

“I feel like he’s doing it and doing a great job being down there with a great attitude and trying to get better every single day.”

“It shows – you can tell the improvement he’s made,” said the Portuguese big man of Walsh’s growth in Portland this season.

“He’s shooting the ball at a high level right now, so we just want him to keep on getting better and learn from his mistakes, and keep on being confident because we know how good he can be.”

Jordan Walsh understands he’s on the best team in the NBA

Jordan Walsh discussed his current situation with the Boston Celtics after making his debut against the San Antonio Spurs.

Jordan Walsh made his NBA debut for the Boston Celtics during their win over the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday (Jan. 18.) The rookie wing, who was drafted with the 38th pick in the 2023 NBA draft, has spent the majority of the season with the Maine Celtics.

When speaking to the media after earning 3 minutes of playing time, Walsh admitted that he understands the situation he currently finds himself in. He’s a young, inexperienced rookie playing on the best team in the NBA. Getting minutes on the Celtics, especially as a wing player, is not an easy task.

“For me personally, it’s been easy knowing that I’m in the best team, the best organization there is in the NBA right now,” Walsh said. “So, keeping that in my mind, knowing that the time is coming, it’s a process for everybody. I’m just at this point in my process, and hopefully by the end of this process, I’ll be where I want to be. And that’s kind of like how I approach every day, just wanting to get to that final end goal.”

Until then, Walsh will continue to get spot minutes and work on his game in the G-League as he continues to wait for a potential opportunity in the rotation to open up.

Can Jordan Walsh make an impact with the Boston Celtics this season?

The 19-year-old Arkansas alum was warmly welcomed by fans of the Celtics during his first regular season game appearance for Boston.

Boston Celtics rookie wing Jordan Walsh made his NBA debut on Wednesday night, playing a mere 3 minutes in the Celtics’ 117-98 blowout victory over rookie phenom Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs. Yet, despite his brief floor time, the former Razorback saw plenty of crowd support cheering him on as he played.

The 19-year-old Arkansas alum was warmly welcomed by fans of the Celtics during his first regular season game appearance for Boston. Following the emphatic win against San Antonio — Boston’s 20th straight at TD Garden to push the historic streak on — CLNS Media reporter Bobby Manning invited Noa Dalzell from Celtics Blog to join the “Garden Report” podcast and discuss Walsh’s first minutes in the league among other topics.

To hear what they had to say about Walsh’s debut with the Celtics and the win vs. the Spurs, check out the clip embedded below.

Jordan Walsh makes NBA debut with Celtics

Boston is hopefully adding Jordan Walsh to the rotation for the second half of the season, as the former Hog made his NBA debut Wednesday.

Anthony Black, Nick Smith Jr., Ricky Council IV and now, Jordan Walsh.

All four members of Arkansas’ Sweet 16 team from a year ago have now earned minutes in the NBA this season.

Walsh made his initial appearance with Boston on Wednesday night against the San Antonio Spurs in a 117-98 victory.

Walsh missed a shot but grabbed four rebounds in the three minutes of action he received at the end of the game.

He will likely end up being a rotational piece on a Celtics team that is looking to get back to the NBA Finals after narrowly missing out a year ago in a Eastern Conference Finals loss to the Miami Heat and then losing in the NBA Finals the year prior to Golden State.

Boston is back on the hardwood on Friday night against the defending NBA champion Denver Nuggets on ESPN.

Boston Celtics call up Jordan Walsh – could his NBA debut be imminent?

If the former Razorback hopes to earn a shot at more run with Boston (assuming he even gets on the floor), he will have to avoid making too many defensive mistakes.

Could we be about to see the long-awaited season debut of Boston Celtics rookie wing Jordan Walsh with the team? The Arkansas alum has been playing with the Maine Celtics up in Portland so far this season, but has yet to log a single minute with the parent club that drafted him last summer.

Now, with the Celtics set to face off with the San Antonio Spurs — a ball club that is not exactly trying to win games this season as a franchise — and a number of Boston’s usual high-minutes players looking like they could be scratches for rest, we might finally see Walsh take the floor.

If the former Razorback hopes to earn a shot at more run with Boston (assuming he even gets on the floor), he will have to avoid making too many defensive mistakes, as he likely won’t be expected to take anything but the most open of shots.

The hosts of the CLNS Media “How Bout Them Celtics!” podcast took a long look at what a Walsh debut might look like on a recent episode; check it out above!

Boston’s Jordan Walsh gets ‘incomplete’ grade on his season so far

The Celtics rookie has yet to appear in a regular season Celtics game at the NBA level.

The NBA has reached roughly a quarter way through its 2023-24 season by now, with some clarity about how each ball club’s rookies have done so far this season coming into focus. But not all teams have a rookie on their roster, and at least at the NBA level, not every team has seen how its newest players look given many teams, like the Boston Celtics, have yet to see their players on the court outside of a G League context.

For that reason, in a recent assessment by Bleacher Report’s Andy Bailey of the league’s 2023 rookie class, Celtics first-year forward Jordan Walsh has earned himself an “incomplete” grade given the paucity of play from the Arkansas alum among his peers in the NBA.

“The Celtics might be the best team in the NBA, and they haven’t had a single minute logged by a rookie this season,” writes Bailey.

“Walsh, who was selected near the top of the second round, has appeared in 14 G League games, but he’s yet to debut for the big club.”

The 6-foot-7 forward has put up 13.9 points, 6 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and 1.5 steals per game in 29.6 minutes of floor time per game while shooting 42.4% from the floor overall, 31.1% from 3, and 68.0% from the stripe, his accuracy from all three contexts hinting that it could be a while before we see Walsh with the parent club.
