Tre’Davious White explains why he picked the Rams in free agency

Tre’Davious White picked the Rams in free agency for a few reasons, including their “very authentic” training staff and successful history of rehabbing injuries

Tre’Davious White was one of the Los Angeles Rams’ big free-agent additions this offseason, heading west to Hollywood after being released by the Buffalo Bills. White is a former All-Pro and two-time Pro Bowler, so the talent is unquestioned as a defender.

The primary concern with White is his injury history. He’s coming off a torn Achilles in 2023 and he also tore his ACL the year prior, so he’ll be rehabbing leading up to the 2024 season.

It was Rams doctor Neal ElAttrache who performed White’s Achilles surgery so there’s some familiarity between the team and player. That was one of the reasons White decided to sign with the Rams in free agency, citing their impressive training staff and history of players successfully rehabbing serious injuries.

“Very transparent, just very authentic, the plan that they have in place,” White said, via the team’s official site. “I’m a guy that’s very strategic (with) my approach of how I would want my rehab to go, being that I’ve had an ACL before and I know how rehab can go. So I was doing my homework. This team has rehab guys that have been very successful with the Achilles before.”

White said he’s “on a good track to get going,” which is encouraging for himself and the Rams. The team hasn’t said when White is expected to be on the field but he is in the building for offseason workouts so he’s at least getting acclimated to his new group.

As for the locker room fit, White loves what he’s seen from the Rams thus far. He said he’s looking forward to getting started after hitting it off right away with the coaching staff.

“I felt like it was a good fit,” White said. “We hit it off, it was very authentic, which is what I was looking for, being a guy that had been in the league for a while. Great staff, young group, a group of guys that’s willing to work, so I’m looking forward to it.”

White and Darious Williams will be the Rams’ starting cornerbacks in a new-look secondary, bringing not only impressive ball skills to the field but also plenty of experience. It was an area the Rams clearly wanted to improve and as long as White can stay healthy, the secondary should be better in 2024.

Tre’Davious White’s contract with Rams appears to be much cheaper than anticipated

Tre’Davious White’s contract was reported as being worth $8.5 million, but the finer details show he has a cap hit of just $3.5 million

Tre’Davious White was one of the Los Angeles Rams’ big signings this offseason, inking the former Buffalo Bills cornerback to a one-year deal. When the news was first reported, White’s contract was said to have a base value of $8.5 million and a max value of $10 million with incentives.

White finally signed his contract this week and since then, details of the one-year deal have emerged. According to Over The Cap, White’s contract actually has a base value of $4.25 million and only $3.25 million guaranteed at signing.

His base salary is only $1.5 million and he got a signing bonus worth $1.75 million, which amounts to $3.25 million fully guaranteed. His cap hit in 2024 will be just $3.485 million, a very manageable number for the Rams.

Additionally, Over The Cap writes that White has “up to $1 million in per game bonuses,” which can increase the overall value of the contract.

While some viewed the contract as being a bit risky when it was first reported, signing a two-time Pro Bowl cornerback for only $3.25 million guaranteed seems like a worthwhile move for a team seeking help in the secondary. He’s injury-prone but so was Ahkello Witherspoon and he was healthy all season in 2023.

The cost is reasonable and the upside is great if White can stay on the field, making this a much better signing than it seemed at first glance.

A painful photo of Tre’Davious White signing elsewhere

Hate this:

Well, it has officially happened.

The Buffalo Bills released cornerback and fan favorite Tre’Davious White during their salary-cap slashings last month. He went on to reportedly agree to terms with the Los Angeles Rams.

We all knew it was coming, but White has not officially signed his contract in Los Angeles. That’s now a known fact because the Rams shared this (kind of painful) photo of White signing on the dotted line:

Watch highlights of new Rams CB Tre’Davious White

Tre’Davious White was a standout corner with the Bills. Here are some of the best plays of his career thus far.

The Los Angeles Rams added a playmaker to their secondary this offseason by signing Tre’Davious White to a one-year contract. The former Buffalo Bills cornerback is a two-time Pro Bowler and one-time All-Pro selection, shining during his time in the AFC East.

The former LSU defender has 18 career interceptions in just 82 games, also forcing five fumbles and recording three sacks. When healthy, he’s a terrific zone cornerback thanks to his instincts and ball skills.

Watch: Tre’Davious White shares message for Rams fans after signing contract

Tre’Davious White signed his contract Tuesday and shared a message for Rams fans

Tre’Davious White officially signed his one-year contract with the Los Angeles Rams on Tuesday, a deal that will pay him a base value of $8.5 million. After putting pen to paper, he shared a message for Rams fans.

He said in a video posted by the team that he can’t wait to get started, and he’s also excited to give back to the community – a sign that he’s the perfect type of player for the Rams’ culture.

“Excited to get to work, get to work for you fans, get out here in the community with the fans and put my best foot forward with my teammates and I’m excited to be here. Go Rams.”

White is a former All-Pro and two-time Pro Bowler, so he’s been one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL before. The Rams hope he can capture some of that stellar play next season, as does White after missing 24 games in the last two years combined.

Rams officially sign Tre’Davious White to 1-year deal

The Rams announced they’ve officially signed Tre’Davious White to a one-year deal, adding a top corner to their secondary

The Los Angeles Rams have been aggressive in rebuilding their secondary this offseason, adding Kamren Curl at safety and Darious Williams at cornerback. They then brought in Tre’Davious White, agreeing to a one-year deal with the former Bills corner two weeks ago.

On Tuesday, the Rams announced they’ve officially signed White to a one-year contract, locking him in for the 2024 season. White was released by the Bills earlier this offseason so he won’t count against the compensatory pick formula.

While we don’t know the exact structure of White’s contract, the base value is reportedly $8.5 million, with incentives potentially bringing it up to $10 million.

White is expected to be one of the two starting cornerbacks for Los Angeles in 2024, opposite Williams. Quentin Lake is a candidate to be the slot defender, though Los Angeles could also draft a corner to fill that spot.

Rams balancing risk and reward with injury-prone Tre’Davious White

The Rams are taking a sizable risk by giving Tre’Davious White $8.5 million, but he also brings a lot of potential to LA’s secondary

When healthy, Tre’Davious White is one of the best defensive backs in the NFL. A shutdown corner, educated in the LSU school of pass defending, White perpetuates the school’s long legacy of sending top DBs to the league.

A pillar of the Bills’ newfound success in the 21st century, White helped bring forth Buffalo’s best run of success since the team’s run to four straight Super Bowls in the 90s.

However, that was then and this is now. And now the Rams have committed at least $8.5 million to an injury-plagued player who has missed multiple games in four straight years.

White’s injuries are a massive point of concern. White hasn’t played a full year since 2018 and has suffered a torn ACL in 2021 and a torn Achilles tendon in 2023.

For a team that doesn’t have an established CB1, giving that job to White is a risky gamble. For one, we haven’t seen White play since Week 4 of last season nor do we know how the injury has affected him. White’s history with lower body injuries, combined with his seven years of NFL experience also calls into question his durability.

I am a believer that the best ability is availability and White has yet to prove that he can stay healthy for a whole year. For a first-time defensive coordinator, consistency is key and the Rams need it if Chris Shula is expected to make an impact in Year 1.

However, White’s situation isn’t all that bleak. Rams insider George Lopez has this to say about the former All-Pro.

“If Tre’Davious White can stay healthy, it’s a steal of a signing for the Rams. He’s a top CB and will not only strengthen the Rams secondary but will also provide leadership to the younger DBs on the Rams”

And perhaps that is where the key in this signing is. Everyone, including myself, has been so hyper-focused on White’s on-field play that his off-field impact has not been given the attention it deserves. With a young DB room full of talent and some expected additions in the NFL draft, White’s role will extend to the classroom.

As Cooper Kupp did for Puka Nacua, White’s insight and experience could lift the DB room as a whole. Since he was drafted in 2017, the Bills have only missed the playoffs once. They previously missed the playoffs in 17 straight seasons.

While the price tag is a bit high for a player with a history like White, his impact on the youth will outlive his tenure with the team. For a squad with championship aspirations, perhaps the calm of a veteran presence like White is what will guide the Rams through the storm.

Grading the Rams’ signing of CB Tre’Davious White

The Rams are bringing in Tre’Davious White in what’s a mix of risk and reward on defense

The Los Angeles Rams were expected to be aggressive this offseason after stripping down their roster in 2023, and that’s exactly what they’ve been. The defense has received a lot of attention with the most recent addition being All-Pro cornerback and two-time Pro Bowler, Tre’Davious White.

He agreed to a one-year deal worth $8.5 million this week, with incentives bringing the max value up to $10 million. It’s a sizable contract for a veteran coming off a torn Achilles last October, which makes this a somewhat risky move for the Rams. It’s also easy to understand why they did it.

White was one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL when he was healthy a few years ago. He was a second-team All-Pro in 2020 when he picked off three passes in 14 games, but since then, he’s been limited to only 21 total games in three seasons.

He missed significant time due to a torn ACL in 2021 and the aforementioned Achilles tear in 2023, so he hasn’t been available very much. Not to mention, Achilles injuries are often regarded as some of the toughest to recover from, as we saw with Cam Akers in Los Angeles.

When White is healthy, though, he’s a game-changer in the secondary. He has the movement skills and speed to match up in man coverage, while also displaying the instincts to make plays on the ball in zone coverage.

With the Rams, he’ll mostly play zone, but if the Rams want to blitz more, he’s certainly capable of matching up one-on-one to eliminate the receiver lined up across from him. That’s a plus for L.A. because the defense was lacking man corners last season, leading to fewer blitzes.

As expensive as White’s contract is for a player coming off injury, it’s only one year. This is along the lines of being an all-in move for the Rams, whose Super Bowl window is open with Matthew Stafford in 2024, but it’s unclear how much longer he’ll play. So they’re pushing for impact starters in free agency such as White, Darious Williams and Kamren Curl in the secondary.

If White doesn’t have the same juice and isn’t the same player next season, the Rams will move on after one season. this signing doesn’t preclude them from drafting a cornerback early, either. The draft isn’t about one year, it’s about several seasons.

By getting White in the building and drafting a young cornerback (or two), the Rams will have proven talent now and future starters, too. This will allow any rookies to be slowly worked into the defense rather than being forced into a starting role at a difficult position on defense.

The risk is there, but so is the potential reward.

Rams sign former Bills CB Tre’Davious White

The former #Bills CB has a new team:

Tre’Davious White is heading far away from the Buffalo Bills … very far.

According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, the 29-year-old has signed with the Los Angeles Rams.

White has landed a one-year, $8.5 million deal worth up to $10 million with incentives.

In heading to Los Angeles, White leaves the AFC but is still joining a team that the Bills are slated to face next season. Buffalo faces Los Angeles on the road at SoFi Stadium.

The fan favorite in Buffalo was released by the Bills in early March as part of a series of salary cap moves. Buffalo needed to get under the limit and had to let go of multiple starters to get there.

White was the first draft pick of the current Bills front office, led by general manager Brandon Beane, in 2017.

While the cap is a reason the Bills cut White, so are his age and injury history. He played in only six games in 2022 because of a serious knee injury, only to go down again with a season-ending Achilles injury this past season.

Tre’Davious White’s Achilles surgery was done by Rams’ doctor

The Rams should have some added knowledge about Tre’Davious White’s Achilles injury consider their doctor performed the surgery

Neal ElAttrache is one of the best-known surgeons in the country, performing surgeries to repair countless injuries to high-profile athletes. Last year alone, he did Aaron Rodgers’ Achilles surgery, Shohei Ohtani’s elbow surgery and Deshaun Watson’s shoulder repair.

ElAttrache also just so happens to be the Rams’ head physician, which can give the team an edge when it comes to evaluating a player’s injury and timetable for return.

The Rams are signing All-Pro cornerback Tre’Davious White to a one-year deal worth up to $10 million, a fairly risky contract for a player coming off an Achilles tear suffered last October. However, the Rams probably know more about White’s current health because it was ElAttrache who performed the surgery on his Achilles, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

White also spent some time with ElAttrache rehabbing the injury as he makes his way back for the 2024 season.

Even with potentially having some additional knowledge about White’s status, the Rams are taking a gamble by signing him to such a lucrative deal. They saw the impact Cam Akers’ torn Achilles had on his game; he’s never been the same running back since.

Not to mention, White tore his ACL in 2021, so he’s suffered two major injuries in the last three years.
