Five Texas players who need to step up against Baylor

These five need to perform against Baylor on Saturday.

After two grueling losses to Oklahoma and Oklahoma State, Texas has a full week to reflect and attempt to recharge for the final five games of the regular season. First on the schedule is a tough road game against No. 16 Baylor.

This could be the make-or-break game for Steve Sarkisian. 5-3 with a 3-2 Big 12 record could still push on toward a conference championship. Sitting at .500 overall could lead to even worse fates down the road.

Everybody within the program needs to step up heading into Baylor. Sarkisian, assistant coaches, and especially the players.

Talent is on this Texas roster. Within the next couple of years, more players will have been drafted from Tom Herman’s recruiting classes than the latter stages of Mack Brown or Charlie Strong. Coaching has been iffy at times but with NFL caliber level players sprinkled throughout, results have been poor.

Things need to change. Here are five players who need to step up for Texas during the Baylor game.

Five reasons Texas could have an unsuccessful 2021 season

After some optimism earlier in the week, it’s time to take the pessimistic point of view.

Even when the team was down over the past decade, expectations never seemed to be lowered. Wins are expected in Austin, no matter who the coach, or what outstanding circumstances are present.

Steve Sarkisian has been brought in to elevate Texas back to where everyone “expects” them to be. Nearly eight months into the job, he will take the field for the first time against Louisiana on Sept. 4. It marks the first ranked matchup the Longhorns will have since 1984.

After some optimism earlier in the week, it’s time to take the pessimistic point of view. As they say, some things never change. The same could remain true for Texas’ 2021 season.

Although Sarkisian is considered a guru, there are plenty of potential downfalls within the offense. Even things out of the head coaches’ control could affect the end of the season record.

On the defensive side, Pete Kwiatkowski will be trying to replace the star of Chris Ash’s 2020 unit. Plenty of studs will perform on a weekly basis but a significant amount of Texas’ production from last season is missing.

Here are five reasons Texas will have an unsuccessful 2021 season:

Big 12 Football: 247Sports ranked the top 10 transfer additions

Kevin Flaherty of 247Sports ranked the Big 12’s most important transfer additions this offseason.

The NCAA transfer portal was hit hard by several Big 12 football programs this offseason.

Many of these incoming players have the potential to make an immediate impact for their respective programs in 2021. Kevin Flaherty of 247Sports recently ranked the Big 12’s top 10 most important transfer additions.

Keep in mind that these rankings are regarding the incoming transfers that are expected to make a significant contribution and fill an important need for their new teams. It’s not necessarily the highest rated transfers or prospects.

Former LSU linebacker Ray Thornton, who transferred to Texas in January, was among the 10 players listed. Oklahoma and TCU led the list with two players mentioned, while Oklahoma State was the only Big 12 program to not have an incoming transfer listed.

Take a look at Flaherty’s list of the most important incoming transfers in the Big 12 ahead of the 2021 season:

Where the Texas Longhorns land in ESPN’s post-spring rankings

The Texas Longhorns spring football is now in the rear view mirror, ESPN ranked them in the top 25 of their post-spring rankings.

Spring football has come to a close for the Texas Longhorns. First-year head coach Steve Sarkisian inherits a team that finished fourth in the conference and were just a few plays away from being one of the top teams heading into the Big 12 Championship game. Can he finally get Texas over the proverbial hump in year one?

2021 Texas Longhorns Outlook

Scott Wachter-USA TODAY Sports

The Texas Longhorns return a total of 15 starters in all three phases of the game. Six return on offense and seven on the defensive side of the ball. In the previous way-too-early rankings from ESPN, the team was listed at No. 21 but dipped just one spot in the updated post-spring rankings to No. 22.

The Longhorns defense added a pair of transfer linebackers from the SEC to help enhance Pete Kwiatkowski’s defense in Ray Thornton (LSU) and Ben Davis (Alabama) among a few others. Offensively, they will deploy a new quarterback between Hudson Card or Casey Thompson. The offense will hopefully use Bijan Robinson as their workhorse much in the way that Najee Harris was used for Sarkisian in Tuscaloosa.

What ESPN Says…

Steve Sarkisian’s first spring camp concluded without a definitive answer on who will replace Ehlinger, a four-year starter. Casey Thompson took snaps with the No. 1 offense in the spring game, and he’ll continue to battle Hudson Card throughout the offseason.

New defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski will have a busy offseason trying to build depth at linebacker and on the edge. Along with losing Ossai to the NFL draft, 2020 leading tackler Juwan Mitchell announced on Monday he will transfer to Tennessee.

Texas Longhorns Football: Three things to watch for in the spring game

Texas’ first Orange and White game under Steve Sarkisian is set to take place on Saturday. Here are three things to watch for during it.

Texas’ first Orange and White game under Steve Sarkisian is set to take place on April 24. The format will be slightly different than the way Tom Herman ran the spring game, whereas Sarkisian will put the best players up against each other.

Based on what he learned from his time in Tuscaloosa under Nick Saban, Sarkisian will split the roster into two teams. The first-team offense and second-team defense will be on one squad, while the second-team offense and first-team defense will be on another. This allows players who are considered to be on the same level of the depth chart to square off.

Plenty of storylines will be produced on Saturday. Many will want to see how Sarkisian’s offense performs, even if under restraint. Pete Kwiatkowski’s defense has been dominating in practice, will it continue in a live game action setting?

Here are three things to look for at Texas’ spring game on Saturday.

First, Hudson Card vs Casey Thompson
