Texas RT Christian Jones gets hands-on work with Saints coach at pro day

Texas right tackle Christian Jones got some hands-on work with the Saints at his pro day. He’s a prospect on the rise, and could be a good understudy for Ryan Ramczyk:

The New Orleans Saints were busy at the Texas Longhorns pro day this week. In addition to keeping close eyes on nose tackle T’Vondre Sweat and meeting with linebacker Jaylan Ford and other prospects, the Saints were able to put right tackle Christian Jones through position drills as prospects worked out ahead of the 2024 NFL draft. Sportskeeda’s Tony Pauline reports it was a Saints coach leading Jones through drills.

Pauline doesn’t specify whether it was offensive line coach John Benton, senior assistant Rick Dennison, or assistant line coach Jahri Evans putting Jones through his paces, but either way the Saints got some good information.

Jones nails the athletic archetype the team has shown they value at 6-foot-5 and 305 pounds, and he moves really well for someone his size when blocking out in space or crossing the formation behind the line of scrimmage. He also had a productive week of practices at the Senior Bowl against other draft prospects and has checked almost every box through the pre-draft process.

The 23-year-old started 48 of his 61 games with Texas, lining up almost entirely on the right side (though he did start at left tackle for much of the 2021 season). Last year, he allowed just one sack on 511 snaps in pass protection, per Pro Football Focus charting.

Right now, he’s projected to be a third-round pick, though Jones could climb higher and possibly be an option for New Orleans in the second round at No. 45 overall (with the pick coming back to them from the Denver Broncos). The Saints need a long-term solution at right tackle after they asked Ryan Ramczyk to take a steep pay cut while managing his degenerative knee condition. Jones just might be the right player to take that mantle.

Tennessee offered a scholarship to 2025 linebacker prospect Christian Jones.

“After an amazing conversation with William Inge, I’m blessed to receive an offer from the University of Tennessee,” Jones said.

Jones is the No. 112 overall prospect in the class of 2025. He ranks as the No. 15 linebacker prospect and No. 1 player in Nebraska, according to 247Sports.

Jones has scholarship offers from Tennessee, Penn State, Washington, Texas A&M, Iowa, Boston College, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Notre Dame, Missouri, USC, Michigan State, Wisconsin, Kansas, Iowa State, Nebraska and Minnesota.

Minnesota was the first school to offer Jones a scholarship on Dec. 3, 2021.

NFL Combine preview for Texas football players

Several Texas players can raise their draft stock at the NFL combine.

The NFL combine is under a week away, and several Texas Longhorns football players have plenty to gain at the showcase. The team has 11 players set to compete in a series of events that give tangible measurements on players’ athleticism.

The combine is set to take place Feb. 26-March 4. Defensive tackles and linebackers start competing at 2 p.m. CT on Feb. 29. Defensive backs and tight ends will compete on March 1, quarterbacks, running backs and wide receivers will participate March 2 and offensive linemen will take part on March 3.

Defensive tackles T’Vondre Sweat and Byron Murphy will join linebacker Jaylan Ford on Feb. 29 with high stakes on the line. Ford was thought to be the best prospect of the bunch heading into the season, but Sweat and Murphy have become early potential picks in their own right.

Wide receivers Xavier Worthy and Adonai Mitchell have plenty on the line in the showcase. Worthy will have an opportunity to separate from the pack with a strong 40-yard dash time. His draft position could rely heavily on it.

Mitchell, who many view as a potential first- or second-round draft pick, can confirm positive views about his ability with a good showing in early March.

Texas will look to put up several draft picks in its best NFL draft class in recent memory.

Winners from Day 1 of 2024 Senior Bowl practices

There was no shortage of standout performances Tuesday in the first Senior Bowl practices.

With scouts, coaches, and decision-makers all in Mobile, Ala., draft season kicked off Tuesday with the first practices ahead of the 2024 Senior Bowl.

While star players like quarterbacks Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels, and Drake Maye aren’t among the participants, there’s no shortage of top prospects and potential future Jacksonville Jaguars players on the Senior Bowl rosters.

The game won’t happen until Saturday, but the practices are just as, if not more, important — especially for linemen, wide receivers, and cornerbacks, who all get a chance to show what they can do in one-on-one drills against fellow prospects. That’s perfect for the Jaguars, who have needs at those positions.

With one day of practices in the books, these 11 players stood out most Tuesday:

The Jets need offensive linemen. Just about everyone in America is aware of that fact. With Jeff Ulbrich acting as one of the head coaches this year for the Senior Bowl, the Jets will have a chance to get up close to plenty of this season’s options in the draft.

With so many offensive linemen, we’ll break this up into the American and National teams.

Coaching the offensive linemen this year in Mobile for the American team are Isaac Williams (Steelers) and Chris Watt (Colts).
