Baylor defeats Texas, 93-85

Baylor’s 34-for-42 performance at the free throw line provided enough cushion to run away with the game.

We had a high scoring matchup in Waco on Monday night. The Baylor Bears and Texas Longhorns ran the score high despite only 18 combined three-point baskets made.

The Longhorns got off to a fast start from three-point range, but finished the game at 9-for-23 from the three-point line. The cold streak proved costly.

Baylor did much of its damage from the free throw line hitting 34 of 42 free throw attempts. Texas head coach Rodney Terry noted the disparity of free throw opportunities as the Longhorns had just 21 attempts to the Bears’ 42 from the free throw line.

Midway through the second half, Baylor stormed back into the game. Nevertheless, the game took a turn for the worst when Texas forward Dylan Disu went down with injury. Then the Longhorns’ lack of depth was on full display.

Baylor went from falling behind by double digits early to running away with the game.

Despite falling to 19-11 on the season, an earlier win against Texas Tech and dominant victory over Oklahoma State should have the Longhorns in the NCAA tournament field. Whether they can win in the tournament is still to be seen.

The Longhorns will end the season with a home Red River game with the Oklahoma Sooners (19-10) who also look to solidify tournament seeding. The teams will play Saturday at 1 p.m. CT on ESPN.

Texas stays put at No. 3 in latest AP Poll

The Texas Longhorns remain the No. 3 team in the country.

The No. 3 Texas Longhorns did not move up or down in the AP Top 25 Poll released on Sunday.

Texas dominated the Baylor Bears on Saturday, 38-6 to open conference play. The offense ran all over the stout Baylor defensive line, and the Texas defense held Baylor to just two field goals.

The Longhorns have now scored more than 30 points in every game this year, and have won each matchup by double digits.

It seems like everything is clicking for Texas, with Sark assembling the team he recruited and they are dominating every opponent.

Texas is now one of three Big 12 teams that are ranked, with Oklahoma coming in at No. 14 and Kansas at No. 24. Kansas will travel to Austin for a top 25 matchup in a battle of undefeated teams on Saturday at DKR.

Social media reacts to No. 3 Texas’ dominant victory over Baylor

College football fans are starting to believe the hype surrounding Texas football this season.

No. 3 Texas trapped Baylor in their final conference matchup, 38-6. Every aspect of the game was flawless for the Longhorns aside from special teams mistakes.

Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers threw for 293 yards and two touchdowns, with one of those being a 29-yard scramble. It seems that Ewers is finally mastering the deep ball we’ve all been waiting for, hitting freshman wide receiver Johntay Cook for 51 yards in the third quarter. Ewers’ pocket presence has been phenomenal, and despite being shaky with oncoming pressure, he stood in the pocket and delivered when he needed to.

The Longhorns defense played outstanding football and its interior defensive line could be the best in the country, only granting Baylor 60 rushing yards versus a talented backfield.

Texas is now 4-0 for the first time since 2012 and look to stay undefeated when they take on the Kansas Jayhawks next Saturday. Here are some social media reactions to the dominating performance by the Longhorns.

No. 3 Texas plays to the standard, beats Baylor 38-6

Texas showed fans what the standard was against Baylor.

The No. 3 Texas Longhorns (4-0) defeated the Baylor Bears (1-3) on Saturday. In doing so, Longhorns played like the No. 3 team in the country winning 38-6.

Starting quarterback Quinn Ewers continued his prime time road game success completing 18 of 23 passes for 293 yards and a passing touchdown. Ewers added a 29-yard rushing touchdown.

Texas running back Jonathon Brooks led Longhorns rushers with 18 carries for 106 yards. Ja’Tavion Sanders led Texas receivers with an explosive 110-yard game on five receptions.

Texas linebacker Jaylan Ford got another interception, while defensive tackle Byron Murphy compiled two sacks.

The major takeaway from the game involves perhaps the team’s most complete game of the season. The Longhorns dominated the first half carrying a 28-6 lead into halftime.

The lone blemish came in the return game. Three Longhorns muffed either a punt or kickoff return. Two of the three fumbles gave Baylor the ball in Texas territory.

Next up, Texas takes on the Kansas Jayhawks (4-0) on the heels of a big win over BYU.

Texas played to the standard. Now it must continue to do so over the next ten weeks.

Texas leads Baylor 28-6 at halftime

Texas leads at the half and CJ Baxter scores for his first touchdown as a Longhorn.

No. 3 Texas got off to a hot start offensively against Baylor in Week 4, scoring on four of their first seven drives.

Running backs CJ Baxter and Jonathon Brooks, along with quarterback Quinn Ewers have all scored a rushing touchdown against the Bears, with Brooks having two.

Ewers has completed 12/15 passes for 126 yards, averaging 8.4 yards a completion.

The Texas running game has 98 yards with three touchdowns. The Horns’ offensive line has held up, allowing Texas to have their way against Baylor.

Despite the Bears having a decent defensive line, Texas has managed to pull ahead and leads by three scores at the half.

It seems like the Texas game plan has been to run the ball with a purpose, and if they keep doing so the game will quickly get out of reach for Baylor.

Should Texas’ offensive game plan be in the air or on the ground?

How should Sark attack the Bears defense?

Texas could go either way when it comes to the Baylor defense. From a fans perspective, we would love to witness the Quinn Ewers connection to star receivers, but that may not be what we see.

Baylor has a decent pass rush, with Byron Vaughns leading the charge holding a 78.9 PFF pass rush grade, followed by linebacker Mike Smith Jr. and defensive lineman Devonte Tezino. Vaughns is Baylor’s best pass rusher, with six pressures on the passer, two sacks and four hurries.

Ewers is not the best when pressured so if the Bears want to make Ewers uncomfortable they will need to put pressure on him.

Baylor has decent cornerbacks in Carl Williams IV and Caden Jenkins. Williams has an 81.6 coverage grade and is the top corner for the Bears’ defense.

If Steve Sarkisian wants to air it out then he will have to have his wide receivers make big time plays and try to avoid the costly drops. They cannot afford to miss wide open touchdowns and easy targets dropped.

As much as the deep ball is pretty, the game plan might be better on the ground. Texas is expected to have freshman running back CJ Baxter back on Saturday and with Brooks coming off a phenomenal game against Wyoming, the backfield is in good hands.

The Longhorns have averaged nearly 150 rushing yards per game, and the Bears have allowed 170 rushing yards per game. If Baxter is 100% without limitations, it will be very exciting to see what he can do as he has had unfortunate injuries to start his young collegiate career.

The Texas Longhorns kickoff against the Baylor Bears at 6:30 P.M. CT.

Texas vs. Baylor: Was it ever a rivalry?

Texas and Baylor play for possibly the last time on Saturday.

The Texas Longhorns travel to Waco on Saturday to take on the Baylor Bears for what could be their final matchup against each other. The victories have been one-sided in favor of the Longhorns.

The two teams that share I-35 have competed in 112 total football games, with Texas winning 80 games and Baylor winning 28. They’ve also tied four times.

The Longhorns have the longest winning streak in the series with 16 consecutive games, ranging from 1958-1973. The Bears’ longest winning streak is two, which they’ve only done on four separate occasions since playing their first game against Texas in 1901.

Since 2010 though, Baylor has made it a bit more competitive, winning six out of 13. Texas has started to take back the series recently, winning six of their last eight versus Baylor.

The largest margin of victory for the Horns came in 1913, when they beat Baylor 77-0. As for the Bears, their largest margin of victory was 50-7, which came in 1989.

When it comes to rivalries against Texas, you may think of Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Arkansas, or even Texas Tech. Baylor is not a rival of Texas, they are not on the same playing field as the Longhorns when it comes to football and they never were.

You can find the stats mentioned above here.

The Longhorns are 14.5 point favorites against the Bears and kickoff is set for 6:30 P.M. CT.

Previewing the final rivalry matchup between Texas and Baylor

We preview the Longhorns’ crucial Big 12 season opener against the Baylor Bears.

The Texas Longhorns (3-0) face the Baylor Bears (1-2) on Saturday. It could be the final meeting between the two teams.

It’s a significant game for both teams. We have noted the importance of the game to Baylor alumni this week, but it needs to be as important to Texas given what is at stake.

The Longhorns have something to lose. The team is undefeated and ranked No. 3 in the country presently. Its goals and aspirations are all ahead of the team.

In our fall camp preview, we stated the importance of a 4-0 start in the 2023 season. I wrote the following on that topic.

“Texas can avoid letting a win slip away against Alabama or getting upset by Baylor early with a changed mindset. … (The program) shouldn’t be able to stomach another bitter upset loss to Baylor by the fourth game. It’s no longer okay for Texas to lose any of the first four games. Leadership will have to elevate the Longhorns to meet that standard.”

Now Texas’ leadership gets its opportunity to play championship-level football. It can start by performing well in the conference opener.

Let’s preview the game between Texas and Baylor.
