Dominant defense, Jalen Hurts lifts Eagles to a 40-22 win over Chiefs in Super Bowl 59

Dominant defense, Jalen Hurts lifts Eagles to a 40-22 win over Chiefs in Super Bowl 59

In what can only be described as a beatdown, the Eagles exacted revenge on the Chiefs, winning Super Bowl LIX in dominant fashion, 40-22.

Vic Fangio’s No. 1 ranked defense held Kansas City to 275 yards of total offense and 3-11 on third downs, with Patrick Mahomes getting sacked six times on the night. Philadelphia quarterback Jalen Hurts was 17 of 22 passing for 221 yards, two touchdowns, one interception, and a 119.7 passer rating.

Kansas City scored 16 fourth-quarter points, but it was too late as the Eagles jumped out to a 34-6 lead in the third quarter and bullied the Chiefs throughout the contest. In what can only be described as a team win, the Eagles won despite Saquon Barkley getting held to 57 yards on 25 carries.

Jalen Hurts led the Eagles with a Super Bowl record of 11 carries for 72 yards and one rushing touchdown.

With Barkley shut down, DeVonta Smith had four catches for 69 yards (17.3 avg) and one touchdown.  A.J. Brown had three catches for 43 yards and a touchdown.

2 pending free agents in the Super Bowl could interest Broncos

Broncos fans should keep an eye on Eagles LB Zack Baun and Chiefs LB Nick Bolton during the Super Bowl as both are pending free agents.

The Kansas City Chiefs are set to face the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX on Sunday and the Denver Broncos — like everyone else — will be watching.

There are two players, in particular, that could catch the attention of Broncos general manager George Paton and coach Sean Payton on Sunday.

Eagles linebacker Zack Baun and Chiefs linebacker Nick Bolton are both scheduled to become free agents in March, and ILB is one of Denver’s key positions of need this offseason.

Baun, 28, was picked by the New Orleans Saints in the third round of the 2020 NFL draft while Payton was still coaching in New Orleans. After spending the first four years of his career with the Saints, Baun landed in Philadelphia and he had a breakout season in 2024.

Baun earned first-team All-Pro honors and a Pro Bowl nod after totaling 151 tackles, five forced fumbles, four pass breakups, 3.5 sacks, one interception and one fumble recovery in 16 starts. He was a finalist for the Defensive Player of the Year award, which was won by Broncos cornerback Pat Surtain.

Bolton, 24, was picked by the Chiefs in the second round of the 2021 NFL draft. He recorded 106 tackles, seven quarterback hits, six pass breakups, three sacks, two fumble recoveries, one interception and one forced fumble in 16 starts last fall.

Baun and Bolton will be names to monitor as we approach NFL free agency following the Super Bowl on Sunday.

Look: Bradley Cooper narrates Eagles hype video for Super Bowl LIX matchup vs. Chiefs

The Philadelphia Eagles released this hype video narrated by actor Bradley Cooper ahead of Sunday’s #SuperBowl matchup vs. the Kansas City Chiefs

The countdown has begun, and the Eagles and Chiefs are a little over 28 hours away from kickoff at Caesars Superdome on Sunday night.

Bradley Cooper is one of the biggest Eagles fans, so it makes sense that the famed actor would contribute to the Super Bowl LIX hype video after doing the same two years ago

Cooper narrates the video that focuses on winning “coming down to this moment,” which is the biggest game of Jalen Hurts’s career.

Philadelphia earned its second Super Bowl appearance in three seasons after posting a franchise-record-tying 14-3 record and a postseason run that featured three straight victories at home, including a 55-23 win against Washington in the NFC Championship Game (most points scored in a conference championship game in NFL history).

For only the second time, two Black quarterbacks will face off on the NFL’s biggest stage. Hurts and Mahomes were the first two in Super Bowl 57. Since 2022, Jalen Hurts has been 42-12 (including the playoffs) as a starting quarterback, just behind Patrick Mahomes (48-10).

C.J. Gardner-Johnson was hilarious while mic’d up at Super Bowl LIX Opening Night

Philadelphia Eagles star safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson was hilarious while mic’d up at Super Bowl LIX Opening Night

C.J. Gardner-Johnson’s departure is the mistake that Howie Roseman corrected. The boisterous defensive back will have the most pivotal role as we approach Super Bowl LIX, which is a little over 52 hours away.

Gardner-Johnson returned to Philadelphia after one year in Detroit. He re-energized the Eagles’ defense and stabilized Vic Fangio’s backend. The former Florida Gators defensive back is also a rapper and content creator in his off-time.

With Super Bowl opening night being the a ‘Movie’, it was only right that a mic’d up Gardner-Johnson got to direct the show.

Gardner-Johnson tied for the 3rd-most interceptions (career-high-tying 6) in the league, trailing only Kerby Joseph (9) and Xavier McKinney (8). According to PFF, he is 3rd among NFL safeties with nine forced incompletions, behind Brian Branch (12) and Ar’Darius Washington (10).

Chiefs LB Nick Bolton isn’t surprised by the Bills success this season: ‘They did a great job’

Kansas City #Chiefs linebacker Nick Bolton isn’t surprised by the Buffalo #Bills success this season: ‘They did a great job’ | @EdEastonJr

The Buffalo Bills made multiple roster changes in the offseason after losing to the Kansas City Chiefs in last year’s divisional round. Their improved record and immediate AFC Championship game appearance surprised many critics, except for their opponent on Sunday.

Chiefs linebacker Nick Bolton believes the Bills were always contenders regardless of the change in personnel. During his press conference on Wednesday, he credited the front office and coaching staff.

“Quite honestly, not for me; they got a great offensive coordinator, head coach, front office, guys, they did a great job of filling their holes and filling their needs as the season started and then came, got some guys in before the deadline,” said Bolton. “So they did a great job constructing the roster to succeed and allowing the running backs. Quarterback legs are doing a great job without turning the ball over. I’ve been really used to those mistakes. I think they’re the best Since 2012, I think, in turnover margin or something like that. So that’s definitely helped them a lot as well.”

Bolton has been an essential part of Steve Spagnuolo’s defense and will have his hands full with the Bills’ high-powered offense. The loss earlier in the season in Buffalo is still fresh in every Chiefs player’s mind going into Sunday.

The Kansas City Chiefs have officially announced which players will serve as playoff captains for their AFC divisional-round matchup against the Houston Texans on Saturday, January 18.

The highly coveted title is typically bestowed upon a team’s most experienced players, who are expected to lead their squad in the postseason.

The Chiefs’ official playoff captains are quarterback Patrick Mahomes, tight end Travis Kelce, kicker Harrison Butker, defensive lineman Chris Jones, linebacker Nick Bolton, and long snapper James Winchester.

The defending Super Bowl champions disseminated their announcement in a post to Twitter that featured a dashing portrait of their captains in their best suits:

Each of Kansas City’s playoff captains has extensive postseason experience and is considered among the best players in the NFL at his respective position.

Fans should expect to see all of the Chiefs’ biggest stars put on a show when Kansas City faces off against the Texans this weekend.

PFF picks free agent addition Colts should make

Pro Football Focus recently selected one free agent addition that each team should make in 2025. Who did they pick for the Colts?

Pro Football Focus recently picked one free agent signing that each NFL team should make during the 2025 offseason. So who did they choose for the Indianapolis Colts?

With there being a number of needs that the Colts have to fill as GM Chris Ballard looks to bulk up the competition on this roster, there are quite a few directions PFF could have gone here.

However, they would go with the linebacker position, specifically Nick Bolton, who spent his first four seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs.

PFF noted the Colts struggles in coverage at the linebacker position this past season, with that unit ranking 26th in coverage grade. But Bolton would rank among the best in coverage by PFF’s metrics.

“Bolton was solid yet again for the Chiefs during the 2024 regular season, securing a 65.4 PFF overall grade with a 66.1 PFF coverage mark — ranking seventh among 23 linebackers to play 500 or more coverage snaps.”

Bolton, at still just 24-years-old, has been a key player in the middle of the Chiefs’ defense since entering the NFL, and played nearly 1,000 defensive snaps in 2024.

As a blitzer, he generated 13 pressures, and has been a fairly reliable tackler throughout his career. In coverage, he held pass-catchers to under 10.0 yards per catch and recorded one interception and three pass breakups in 2024.

Rookie Jaylon Carlies–a former college safety–did show promise in 2024, but adding competition for that starting spot next to Zaire Franklin should be on Ballard’s to-do list.

In addition to competition for playing time, depth is needed as well with EJ Speed and Grant Stuard both set to be free agents.
