Giants preparing to take on several familiar faces vs. Seahawks

When the New York Giants look across the field on Sunday, they will see several familiar faces wearing Seattle Seahawks uniforms.

When the New York Giants look across the field on Sunday afternoon, they’re going to see quite a few familiar faces wearing a Seattle Seahawks uniform.

On defense, they’ll be going up against quarterback Geno Smith, who made history by starting in favor of Eli Manning, ending a 222-game iron man streak in November of 2017.

Smith currently leads the NFL with 1,182 yards passing.

“He’s playing at a high level. He’s a veteran now. He’s done a really good job when you study the tape. Last year and this year, here to start out, obviously, he threw for a bunch of yards in a back-and-forth game there for a while. He’s got command,” head coach Brian Daboll said of Smith on Wednesday. “I think Geno is a guy that leads it all. Does a good job of getting the ball to those playmakers.”

If he’s elevated from the practice squad, the Giants might also see wide receiver Miles Boykin, who spent time with the team this past summer before being released in late August.

When quarterback Daniel Jones is under center, he’ll be looking across the line at several prominent former Giants, including defensive end Leonard Williams, nose tackle Johnathan Hankins, and safety Julian Love.

“Again, another guy that he’s a very smart player,” Daboll said of Love. “We knew that, obviously, here. Instinctive. He’s made a couple really good plays for them at the start of this year. I know he’s out, has a quad. We’ll see where he’s at. But, that type of guy, with the right mindset, that works the right way, you really wouldn’t expect anything else.”

Through four weeks, Love is second among all NFL safeties with a Pro Football Focus grade of 89.9. His coverage grade of 85.6 trails only two players, ironically including ex-Giants safety Xavier McKinney, who leads the league at 89.5.

Williams, meanwhile, is seventh among interior defensive linemen with a PFF grade of 80.1.

It’s certainly interesting to see all these ex-Giants finding success league-wide while the team in East Rutherford continues to flounder.

Seahawks sign 2 players, a wide receiver and running back, to practice squad

Seahawks sign 2 players, a wide receiver and running back, to practice squad

The Seattle Seahawks remain as active as ever when it comes to their practice squad roster. On Wednesday morning, the Seahawks signed a pair of offensive players to their practice unit. Wide receiver Miles Boykin and running back Brittain Brown are the latest members to the Seattle organization.

Brown was mainly a special teams player for the Las Vegas Raiders, the team who drafted him in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL draft. He played in six games, but did not record any statistics on offense. He is a familiar face to Seahawks running back Zach Charbonnet, as both were members of the UCLA football team together. Brown spent the 2023 season on injured reserve, and was waived when the league had the deadline to trim rosters down to 53 players.

Boykin entered the league as a third round pick by the Baltimore Ravens during the 2019 NFL draft, and spent the first three seasons of his career in the Charm City. After his initial stint with the Ravens concluded, he remained in the AFC West by jumping ship to their primary rivals, the Pittsburgh Steelers. In his career with both teams, Boykin has hauled in 38 receptions for 498 yards and seven touchdowns.

Unfortunately, as with every practice squad transaction, their arrival means someone has to be released. Drawing the short straws this time were defensive tackle Quinton Bohanna, and former Seahawks 2019 second round pick Marquise Blair.

Giants re-sign Jakob Johnson to practice squad, release Miles Boykin

The New York Giants have re-signed TE/FB Jakob Johnson to their practice squad for the second time in a week.

The New York Giants have added fullback/tight end Jakob Johnson back to the practice squad and released wide receiver Mile Boykin.

Johnson, a fullback who can also function as a tight end, has been being bounced back and forth between the active roster, the street, and the practice squad since the Giants initially signed him on August 16.

Since then, the Giants released Johnson during final cuts on August 27 but then quickly added him back to the practice squad on August 28. He was elevated to the active roster on August 29 but then released on September 1 to make room for cornerback Adoree’ Jackson.

Boykin was signed to a one-year deal in April and was also released during final cuts on August 27. He was re-signed to the practice squad on August 28.

Johnson, 29, was born in Germany and first came to the NFL International Player Pathway Program with the New England Patriots in 2019. Since then, he’s spent time with the Las Vegas Raiders before joining the Giants this summer.

Johnson played his high school ball in Jacksonville, Florida, and then in college for Tennessee. He is a part owner of the Stuttgart Surge of the ELF (European League of Football).

Giants sign veteran WR Miles Boykin

The New York Giants have signed veteran wide receiver Miles Boykin to a one-year deal.

The New York Giants continued adding to their wide receiver room this week, signing veteran Miles Boykin to a one-year contract.

The 27-year-old Boykin was originally a third-round pick of the Baltimore Ravens in the 2019 NFL draft. In 2022, he joined the Pittsburgh Steelers off waivers and remained with them through the 2023 regular season.

In 73 career games (25 starts), the Notre Dame product has hauled in 38 receptions for 498 yards and even touchdowns. He’s also recorded 17 special teams tackles.

Although the 6-foot-4, 220-pound Boykin has been limited as a receiver, he has played a notable special teams role — something the Giants are likely to utilize.

In 2023, Boykin earned an overall Pro Football Focus grade of 51.1 and a special teams grade of 68.6.

Former Steelers WR Miles Boykin signs with Giants

Miles Boykin is now a member of the New York Giants.

On Tuesday, the New York Giants announced they had signed former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Miles Boykin. Boykin is set to enter his sixth season in the NFL and spent the last two with the Steelers.

Boykin doesn’t provide much in the passing game but is a star on special teams and a player who Pittsburgh will miss on coverage teams. The Steelers signed wide receivers Quez Watkins, Van Jefferson and Cordarrelle Patterson and hopefully Patterson can be a bigtime returner and one of the others can step up on the coverage teams.

The Steelers still have a long list of free agents who are still looking for a team and several of them could find their way back to the Steelers after the 2024 NFL draft.

Former Notre Dame star back with Steelers

Back to the Burgh for a former Notre Dame standout

Former Notre Dame wide receiver [autotag]Miles Boykin[/autotag] is returning to the Pittsburgh Steelers. The team announced the move on Monday. He originally joined the Steelers in April of 2022 when he was claimed off waivers.

Boykin was a special teams standout last year in Pittsburgh. Playing in 16 games, he recorded 10 tackles, including a team-high nine solo tackles on special teams. He also played some receiver, pulling in a pair of receptions for 11 yards.

Boykin was a third-round NFL draft pick of the Baltimore Ravens in 2019.  He spent three seasons there before being waived.

Boykin’s 872 receiving yards led Notre Dame in 2018, a year it went 12-0 in the regular season and qualified for the College Football Playoff for the first time in program history. The Providence Catholic (Illinois) graduate finished his Notre Dame career with 77 receptions for over 1,200 yards.

A third former Notre Dame wide receiver joins Steelers

Here we go…

Some memorable former Notre Dame stars have won Super Bowls with arguably the most successful NFL franchise of the Super Bowl era, the Pittsburgh Steelers. To my knowledge, however, never have three former Notre Dame wide receivers been on the same NFL team simultaneously.

Until now.

The Steelers already employed former Notre Dame leading receiver [autotag]Chase Claypool[/autotag], who they drafted in the second round in 2020. This offseason, they signed former Notre Dame standout [autotag]Miles Boykin[/autotag] after he was released by the Baltimore Ravens.

Now Notre Dame’s leading receiver from the 2020 season that ended with a trip to the College Football Playoff has signed with the Steelers. [autotag]Javon McKinley[/autotag] is headed to Steel Town.

McKinley went undrafted in 2021 before signing as a free agent with the Detroit Lions. He spent the majority of last season on the Lions practice squad before being released this spring. To make room for McKinley, the Steelers waived defensive end Tyree Johnson.

McKinley hauled in 53 receptions during his time at Notre Dame, including 42 during that 2020 campaign.

AFC North rival reportedly claims WR Miles Boykin off of waivers from Ravens

An AFC North rival reportedly claimed former Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Miles Boykin off of waivers

The Baltimore Ravens selected wide receiver Miles Boykin in the third round of the 2019 NFL draft in hopes that he would develop into a matchup nightmare on the outside. That didn’t go exactly as planned, as the former University of Notre Dame star struggled to form a connection with quarterback Lamar Jackson and didn’t make much of an impact on the field outside of blocking and special teams.

On Monday, Baltimore decided to part ways with the fourth-year player, saving around $2.5 million in cap space. On Tuesday, one of the Ravens’ AFC North rivals claimed Boykin off of waivers in the Pittsburgh Steelers, keeping him in the division.

During his time in Baltimore Boykin played in 40 games, catching 33 passes for 470 yards and seven touchdowns. However, he injured his figure before the 2021 season and was placed on injured reserve, only to come back and play eight games, hauling in one pass for six yards.

Boykin now reunites with former college teammate Chase Claypool in Pittsburgh, where he will look to make big contributions.

Steelers claim rival Ravens WR Miles Boykin off waivers

The Ravens released veteran receiver Miles Boykin on Monday and 24 hours later, the Steelers snapped him up.

The Baltimore Ravens released veteran receiver Miles Boykin on Monday, and 24 hours later, the Steelers snapped him up.

According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, Pittsburgh claimed Boykin off waivers.

While the Steelers need receivers, Boykin is one for fans to temper their excitement about.

Boykin, drafted out of Notre Dame at No. 76 overall in 2019, had his best season two years ago when he caught 19 receptions for 266 receiving yards and four touchdowns. In his three years in Baltimore, Boykin’s total contribution was 33 receptions for 470 yards and seven touchdowns.

Pittsburgh could make something out of nothing. At the very least, the addition of Boykin will be good for depth and intel on the enemy.
