Eagles NFC Championship preview: Where the 49ers are most vulnerable?

With preparation underway for the Eagles, we’re looking at where the San Francisco 49ers are most vulnerable ahead of the NFC Championship Game at Lincoln Financial Field

The San Francisco 49ers are heading to Lincoln Financial Field as the No. 2 overall seed and with the reputation of having the NFL’s top defense.

Even with elite pass rushers and an All-Pro linebacker, this 49ers’ defense has holes and it can be found in the back four, and when teams are able to physically match up with DeMeco Ryan’s defense up front.

Talented wide receivers and a dual-threat quarterback are the perfect recipes for success, and Philadelphia has the best of both worlds.

Patrick Mahomes passed for 423 yards and three touchdowns in a 44-23 Chiefs win, while the Falcons also were able to solve the riddle, rushing for 168 yards as quarterback Marcus Mariota completed 13 of 14 passes with two touchdowns and ran for 50 yards and a touchdown as Atlanta converted 9 of 14 third downs in an upset win over San Francisco.

Raiders quarterback Jarett Stidham also had success, throwing for 365 yards and three touchdowns as Las Vegas went blow for blow with the mighty 49ers.

With game time fast approaching, here are three key areas where the 49ers are vulnerable.

Eagles-49ers: 10 early stats to know for NFC Championship Game

We’re looking at 10 early stats to know ahead of Sunday’s NFC Championship Game between the Philadelphia Eagles and San Francisco 49ers

The Eagles are one win away from returning to the Super Bowl and they’ll face a familiar foe in the NFC Championship game when the San Francisco 49ers head to Lincoln Financial Field next Sunday at 3:00 pm.

Philadelphia (14-3) defeated the New York Giants 38-7 on Saturday to clinch a spot in the title game and then watched on Sunday evening, as the Niners (13-4) defeated the Cowboys 19-12 at Levi’s Stadium.

The two teams last met in Week 2 of the 2021 regular season, with San Francisco defeating Philadelphia 17-11 as Jimmy Garoppolo threw one touchdown pass and ran in for another score.

All-Pro quarterback Jalen Hurts had an uneven performance in the loss, completing just 12 of 23 passes for 190 yards. He rushed for 82 yards, including a 1-yard TD in the fourth quarter.

In that matchup from last season, Nick Bosa had two sacks and San Francisco’s defense shut down Philadelphia was dominant against Atlanta in a 32-6 season-opening win.

Both teams are far different from that Week 2 matchup and the Eagles are much more explosive on offense after the addition of A.J. Brown.

With preparation set to begin, we’re looking at ten early stats to know for the NFC Championship Game.

4 former Golden Domers knocked out of NFL divisional playoffs on Saturday

Which former Notre Dame player(s) has the best shot at a ring this year?

For Notre Dame fans, eight former Golden Domers remained in the NFL playoffs when the divisional round kicked off on Saturday.  As the day has come and gone, just four players remain ahead of Sunday’s contests.

In the first game Saturday, the Kansas City Chiefs were able to survive despite having to play without Patrick Mahomes for a decent amount of the game.  Their 27-20 win over the Jaguars means that the Chiefs are headed to the AFC championship game for the fifth-straight season.  As a result, former Notre Dame wide receiver [autotag]Kevin Austin[/autotag], a member of Jacksonville’s practice squad, saw his team eliminated.

The Saturday nightcap between the Eagles and Giants was over seemingly as soon as it got started.  Philadelphia moved the ball at will in the first half and played suffocating defense en-route to a 28-0 halftime lead.  The Eagles ultimately won 38-7 to advance to the NFC championship game that they’ll host next week.  Former Notre Dame quarterback Ian Book moves along with them while [autotag]Julian Love[/autotag], [autotag]Nick McCloud[/autotag], and [autotag]Jaylon Smith[/autotag] are done for the year with the Giants exit.

Moves Titans GM Ran Carthon can make to significantly improve offense

Shaun Calderon suggests some moves new Titans GM Ran Carthon can make to improve the offense for 2023.

The Tennessee Titans have a massive offseason ahead of themselves. The first step of that process was completed following the official announcement that Ran Carthon had been hired as the team’s next general manager.

Carthon was most recently the director of player personnel for a 49ers team that has built one of the most impressive and consistent rosters over the last few years. He will now be tasked with trying to replicate that success in Tennessee.

One of his first orders of business will be to fix Tennessee’s 28th-ranked scoring offense that drastically needs a facelift and an influx of talent. The Titans’ new GM has a few ways he can go about it.

Carthon could decide to rip the band-aid off and go into a full rebuild, or he could attempt a quick fix so the Titans can get back to being a legitimate contender again as soon as next season.

This article is going to discuss a few ways I believe the Titans could go should they decide on the latter over these next few months.

Before we get started, we should mention that every potential option listed in the article was written under the assumption that they become available either through trade or free agency.

There’s still a chance that certain players get franchise tagged and/or extended, which would then take them off the open market.

With all that said, let’s take a closer look at four things Carthon could do to fix the Titans’ woeful offense.

8 former Notre Dame players advance to NFL divisional playoffs

Who do you have winning the Super Bowl this year?

The NFL’s extended wild card weekend came to an end Monday night as the Cowboys routed the Buccaneers 31-14 in Tampa.  Was it the final game for Tom Brady in the NFL?  Time will tell for the legend, but a highly anticipated divisional round now awaits football fans next weekend.

For Notre Dame rooters, eight of the 18 players to make the postseason this year advance to the round of eight.  The Irish are guaranteed to be represented in the Super Bowl this year as they’ve got a former player on all four remaining NFC teams, but have only one practice squad player remaining in the AFC.

Here are the eight former Notre Dame players who advanced with their teams to the NFL divisional playoffs.

49ers and pair of Golden Domers advance to NFC divisional round

Congrats to Banks and McGlinchey for advancing!

After a back-and-forth first half that saw the Seahawks take a 17-16 advantage to break, the 49ers dominated both sides of the ball after halftime Saturday to head to the NFC divisional playoffs next week.  As always, San Francisco’s offensive line was a major factor, allowing Christian McCaffrey to run for 119 yards, including a 68-yard scoring gallop.

Rookie quarterback Brock Purdy, who Notre Dame squared off against in the 2019 Camping World Bowl, threw for 332 yards and three touchdowns in the win.  That included a second half touchdown pass to Debo Samuel that went for 74 yards and effectively ended the game.

With the win, the 49ers now head to the divisional round for the third time in the last four seasons.  It’s a remarkable feat for a team that nobody considers to have anywhere near an elite quarterback.

The win also means that former Notre Dame offensive linemen Mike McGlinchey and Aaron Banks are headed to the divisional round as well.

10 49ers predictions for 2nd half of season

Some 49ers predictions for the second half of the season from @nicholasmcgee24:

Will the real 49ers please stand up?

The 2022 49ers enter the second half of the season needing to declare who they are. San Francisco has produced some sterling performances this campaign, but has also fallen short against teams they were favored to beat.

Yet there is plenty of reason for optimism around the team heading out of the bye, with the previous 49ers game one in which they routed the Rams 31-14.

So how will the second half of the season pan out for a 4-4 Niners. Our 10 predictions for the final nine games paint the picture of an extremely positive stretch run for Kyle Shanahan’s team.

Some surprises in 49ers PFF grades through 2 weeks

The 49ers’ PFF grades through two weeks have a couple of surprises:

The 49ers’ 2022 season is off to a strange start. They lost a game in a downpour in Chicago, and then won a game where they lost starting QB Trey Lance for the season.

A result from the odd first two weeks is a 1-1 record for the 49ers, but a sense of gloom hanging over the club with emotions running high following the Lance injury and Jimmy Garoppolo’s return to the starting lineup.

While the QB conversation has dominated the headlines, there are some other performances that have jumped out this season that come as a little bit of a surprise. They’re also things that could help carry the 49ers to a division win and perhaps another deep playoff run.

We dug through the Pro Football Focus grades from the first two weeks and picked out a few things that were a bit surprising that could also get the 49ers on track to another NFC championship game appearance.
