The Philadelphia Eagles unveiled their initial 53 man roster for the 2020 NFL season and there were a few shocks and surprises.   With the active roster now set, the Eagles just announced a 16 man practice squad with several notable players who’ll likely see extensive action during the 2020 regular season that’ll surely be impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic.

After cutting 12 players over the weekend, Graylan Arnold, Deontay Burnett, Travis Fulgham, Elijah Holyfield, Luke Juriga, Adrian Killins, Elijah Riley, and Michael Warren returned to the NovaCare Complex for visits and all signed to the Eagles practice squad.

The eight other players are as followed:

OL Sua Opeta

DE Joe Ostman

OT Prince Tega Wanogho

DT Raequan Williams

DB Trevor Williams

TE Caleb Wilson

QB Josh McCown

DE Matt Leo — The Eagles also have an exemption for DE Matt Leo thanks to the NFL’s International Pathway Program.

Ostman, Grayland Arnold, Adrian Killins, Luke Juriga, and Elijah Holyfield are all players that could see time on the 53 man roster at various points this season.

Grayland Arnold has the potential to be a stud hybrid in the Eagles secondary and the first steps were taken after he cleared waivers and just announced he was returning to the Birds to join their practice squad.

Arnold had six interceptions in 2019 and he offers some added value as a punt returner. Arnold was a draft worthy player who can play cornerback and play safety.

Standing 5-foot-9 and 186 pounds, Arnold was named second-team All American and All-Big 12 during his final season in Baylor when he led the team with six picks and a talented slot-cornerback, Arnold will find a place on the Eagles roster at some point and will likely make a veteran expendable.

Report: Philadelphia Eagles expected to sign Luke Juriga to the practice squad

Report: Philadelphia Eagles to sign Luke Juriga to the practice squad

In a move that was expected, the Philadelphia Eagles are set to sign former Western Michigan star Luke Juriga to their 16 man practice squad per Mike Kaye of NJ.com.

Juriga was one of 12 players waived on Thursday, but the expectation always that the Eagles would utilize space on the practice squad to develop a player that could have a long future in Philadelphia.

Juriga earned first-team All-Mac honors as a senior after switching over from the guard position. A huge player, Juriga stands 6-foot-3, 301 pounds, and at 22 years old, is likely Jason Kelce’s replacement at center.

The Philadelphia Eagles are less than one week away from a season-opening showdown in D.C. against Chase Young and the Washington Football Team.

With training camp over and several notable changes to the roster, here’s our final 53 man roster projection with two extra players added because the Birds technically can elevate two practice squad players per week, basically carrying 55 if they so choose.

***

QB – 3 — Carson Wentz, Jalen Hurts, Nate Sudfeld

Sudfeld was the unquestioned backup but Hurts looked sharp at times during training camp. It wouldn’t be a shock if the Eagles moved on from Sudfeld, but if he makes the team he’ll be the backup one week from now.

***

Boston Scott

RB – 3 — Boston Scott, Corey Clement, Miles Sanders

The Eagles appeared prepared to enter the 2020 NFL season with two holdovers from last season and a refurbished Corey Clement, but it appears only three running backs will make the cut.

Look for the undrafted rookie Adrian Killins to find a role on the expanded practice squad after being a part of the first round of cuts.

Sudfeld was the unquestioned backup but Hurts looked sharp at times during training camp.   Training camp scrimmages aren’t real games and for that reason alone, Hurts starts the season as the third guy on the depth chart.

The Philadelphia Eagles are just hours from participating in their first 2020 training camp practice after spending the first two weeks working thru a two-phased acclimation period that included weight training and physical fitness.

With training camp now in full swing and several notable changes to the roster, here’s an updated 53 man roster projection:

QB – 3 — Carson Wentz, Jalen Hurts, Nate Sudfeld

Sudfeld is the unquestioned backup, but Hurts has looked sharp during the initial workouts as he continues to soak up the NFL game during a shortened preseason.

GM Howie Roseman stayed true to his retooling effort, forgoing big named free agents at specific positions to add youth and speed to the roster.

In the NFL draft, Roseman made waves by selecting a quarterback in the second round and then securing Carson Wentz some speed via trade (Marquise Goodwin) and three solid draft picks in Jalen Reagor, John Hightower, and Quez Watkins.

With the training camp here and set to start here’s a look at the Eagles projected 53-man roster.

QB – 3 — Carson Wentz, Jalen Hurts, Nate Sudfeld

Sudfeld is the unquestioned backup, but the Eagles have made it clear that Hurts will be involved from the beginning, meaning he’ll likely make the roster every week, especially with it expanding two more players.

A huge battle to watch will be Sudfeld and Hurts, with the rookie possibly ascending early on or struggling to learn the ropes as an NFL passer. Either way, Hurts is apart of the Eagles’ future and apart of the present.

RB – 4 — Boston Scott, Corey Clement, Miles Sanders, Michael Warren

The Eagles appeared prepared to enter the 2020 NFL season with three holdovers from last season and Elijah Holyfield was the third name. After bringing Corey Clement back in free agency and signing undrafted free agent Michael Warren, this group will look different. Sanders will be a year stronger, while the Eagles brass loves Boston Scott and what he brings.  Look for the undrafted rookie Michael Warren, to snag the role of goalline and short-yardage back if it isn’t Jalen Hurts there as well.

The 2020 NFL Draft has concluded with the Philadelphia Eagles selecting 10 players and adding Marquise Goodwin via trade.

The Eagles stuck to their plan of infusing youth, speed, and talent onto the roster. With the draft wrapped up, the Eagles are taking the same strategy to the predraft process.

The Eagles just announced the signing of 12 undrafted free agents, with speed being a major component.

Here are some of the headliners:

***
Adrian Killins, RB, UCF

A 5-foot-7, 162-pound running back, Killins is fast and productive after scoring 25 career rushing touchdowns for the Knights. In 2019, Killins rushed 87 times for 629 yards and seven touchdowns, while he added eight catches for 120 yards and another score.
