5-star DL Lebbeus Overton reclassifies to 2022, includes Oregon Ducks in final list of schools

5-star Lebbeus Overton was the No. 1 ranked DL in 2023, and No. 3 player overall. He has reclassified to 2022, and is looking at the Oregon Ducks.

The majority of Oregon Duck fans are still coming down from what was a massively successful day on Wednesday, where Dan Lanning and the coaching staff went out and secured a trio of coveted recruits, capping off what was an impressive recruiting cycle that finished stronger than expected.

If you’re thinking that the show is over just because signing day has now passed, though, you should think again. Not only are there some high-level prospects that are waiting until the spring to make their decisions, but one of the best players in the 2023 class recently reclassified to the 2022 class, and is now up for grabs.

5-star DL Lebbeus Overton, a 6-foot-4, 265-pound prospect who is ranked by 247Sports as the No. 1 DL in the 2023 class, and the No. 3 overall player, has decided to leave for college early. He announced a list of his top 5 schools on Thursday, with the Ducks firmly in the mix.

The other schools included were the Georgia Bulldogs, Oklahoma Sooners, Texas A&M Aggies, and Ohio State Buckeyes.

Overton is from Milton, GA, and likely has had a lot of conversations with Dan Lanning in the past. Now that Lanning is up in the Pacific Northwest, it could lead him to following Oregon’s new head coach to Eugene. As his recruitment continues into the spring months, this is certainly something to keep a close eye on.

Another thing to pay attention to is the number of scholarships that Oregon has to give. They are currently very close to the limit available, and adding a player like Overton — or potentially 5-star OT Josh Conerly in March — might force some attrition on the current roster. However, if either of those players tell you that they want to be a Duck, you do whatever you can to make room.

Elite recruit and Sooner legacy Lebbeus Overton is reclassifying to the 2022 class

The Sooners landed in the top five for newly reclassified 2022 recruit and OU legacy Lebbeus Overton.

National signing day never passes without surprises. In this case, the surprise comes the day after the first day of the regular signing period for prospective Division 1 football players.

Early Thursday morning, elite defensive line recruit Lebbeus Overton announced he would reclassify from the class of 2023 and join the 2022 class, thus making him officially able to sign and play in the fall.

The announcement creates a massive ripple in the college football world and the recruitment is already narrowed per an article by recruiting aficionado Steve Wiltfong. Five schools are in the running for Overton and he plans to use his official visits to those five: Oklahoma, Georgia, Texas A&M, Ohio State and Oregon.

Oklahoma’s ties to Overton run deep. Like DNA deep. Overton’s father was a former Oklahoma Sooner from 1991-1994 as an offensive lineman. He started four seasons, graduated and returned to OU for a master’s degree. He is the athletic director at Kennesaw State University.

Lebbeus doesn’t play along the offensive line, but he’s dominant in the trenches on the defensive side of the ball. Oh, and he’s a star on his high school basketball team. He was a significant contributor on a Milton High School team that won a state championship at the 7A level in Georgia and finished seventh nationally per MaxPreps in 2021.

When announcing why he was still considering Oklahoma, Milton said this: “Coach Venables going there you can tell they’re trying to switch the program to more a defensive one. He played a main role of being in my top five.” It’s hardly surprising considering how many recruits in recent weeks have echoed some variation of the same sentiments that Venables character and personality stands out above all else.

Oklahoma offered Overton under the Riley regime and Calvin Thibodeaux led the recruiting efforts. While that was going on, the Clemson Tigers were very much in the mix, led by a few familiar names that wear Crimson and Cream now. Venables and defensive tackles coach Todd Bates were the leads of his recruitment when both were at Clemson, and you can imagine both will be using that relationship now that both are at Oklahoma.

Bates and Venables are no strangers to landing elite defensive line talent. They tag-teamed the recruitment of defensive tackle Bryan Bresee, 2019’s No. 1 recruit who signed and plays with Clemson. Bates also helped land three other top 100 defensive tackles in the last few years while at Clemson.

The Sooners have a shot here, but it will not be easy. The field is full of some massive major destinations for an elite defender.

Ohio State is Ohio State, puts players in the league at an outstanding rate and is a national contender almost yearly. Texas A&M’s recruiting for the 2022 class is historic and is already filled with five-star defensive line talent thanks to quite possibly college football’s best recruiter, Elijah Robinson. Oregon has Dan Lanning, who was the defensive coordinator at Georgia before being hired by the Ducks as their head coach. The familiarity means something as Overton mentioned. The same can be said about Georgia, which is the hometown school, fresh off a national title, and loses quite a few interior defenders such as Jordan Davis and Travon Walker to the NFL.

A&M is the trending pick right now. With a decision not likely anytime in the next month, this is a major story to watch over the college football offseason.

The Sooners should empty the tank and go all-in for Overton. They had a five-star defensive lineman, Gabriel Brownlow-Dindy, who was another Sooners legacy. But Lincoln Riley’s exit and Calvin Thibodeaux heading to work at SMU after not being retained by Venables sealed the Sooners’ fate.

They have a shot at another legacy recruit and have nothing stopping them from going all in and applying the full-court press. Only Overton and Josh Conerly remain as Sooners’ targets for the class of 2022. Landing the two would be massive, but landing Overton seems more attainable due to a few factors the Sooners have in their favor.

This is a situation we’ll monitor over the next few months or so. Stay tuned to Sooners Wire for more information as it comes out.

Nation’s No. 3 2023 recruit reclassifies, names top schools

Lebbeus Overton, the nation’s No. 3 overall recruit reclassifies, names top five schools including Georgia.

The Georgia Bulldogs are among the top five schools for five-star defensive end recruit Lebbeus Overton.

Overton was rated as the No. 3 player in the country in the class of 2023, but is now reclassifying to the class of 2022. Overton is a talented defensive end that plays for Milton High School in Alpharetta, Georgia.

Kirby Smart and Georgia offered Overton a scholarship midway through his freshman season in high school. Overton received an invitation to the 2023 All-American Bowl.

Overton is extremely quick off the snap and has an excellent first step. The five-star defensive end put up incredible high school stats (over 40 career sacks). He’ll make an immediate impact at one lucky college football program.

Overton also plays basketball at an elite level. He’s a special athlete. He has a basketball scholarship offers from Stanford, Ohio State, North Carolina, and more.

The 6-foot-5, 270-pound defensive end has the frame to play in the SEC despite reclassifying. Overton named his top five schools of Georgia, Oregon, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, and Ohio State.

Official and Unofficial visitors coming to Norman for Oklahoma’s Big 12 Opener vs. WVU

Oklahoma is set to host several players for official and unofficial visits for this weekends prime-time matchup with West Virginia

Opening their conference slate on what should be a nice evening could not work out any better for the Oklahoma Sooners. They will have a lot of the nation watching, another sellout atmosphere, and some very high-profile recruits in town that they should be ecstatic to host. Let’s take a look at some of the players slated to take official and unofficial visits to Norman this weekend.

Official visits:

Unofficial visits:

As it stands at the time of this post, this group of visitors is loaded. There’s a nice blend of commits and uncommitted guys. Those who have already committed can work on the uncommitted athletes and convince them to come to Oklahoma. It’s a perfect situation for Oklahoma.

NOTES:

In-state star Chris McLellan out of Owasso, Oklahoma, is a priority for Oklahoma. They’ll be trying to restock their defensive line cupboard with the likely departure of multiple guys to the NFL or graduation this winter. Currently, Oklahoma is competing with Florida, Ohio State, and Alabama the most for his services.

Marvin Jones Jr will be on his official visit. He plays at American Heritage which is the same school as Sooners 2023 commit Brandon Inniss. The Sooners have an excellent little connection with this school currently will look to stand out with a great official and hope Brandon can keep the pressure on him at school.

The biggest fish that will be in town is that of Lebbeus Overton. Overton is the number two player in the country in 247Sports composite rankings and the number one recruit by 247Sports. He’s a Sooner legacy as his father (Milton Overton) played offensive line at Oklahoma from 1991-1994. Oklahoma was rumored to be out of the race for Overton. However, a trip to the Champ U BBQ and an unofficial visit this weekend indicates communication between the two sides has picked back up. Oklahoma could really make some noise here. Ultimately, they need to have him back for an official.

With only one offensive lineman committed for the 2023 class, Oklahoma will likely start building on both sides of the line for that class. Guys like Harris Sewell have an offer from the Sooners and are very much on Oklahoma’s radar.

Stay tuned throughout the week as we update the list with more information on who is and is not visiting this Saturday against West Virginia.

The nation’s top prospect in the Class of 2023 was on Clemson’s campus this weekend.

Alpharetta (Ga.) Milton 2023 five-star defensive lineman Lebbeus Overton was in Tiger Town for an unofficial visit on Saturday.

Overton (6-4, 265) is the nation’s No. 1 overall prospect for the 2023 class, per 247Sports Composite rankings.

Overton posted some flicks on Instagram following his visit Saturday.

His caption on his post reads: “Who else all in?”

He had a chance to convene and take some pictures with Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables, defensive tackles coach Todd Bates and defensive ends coach Lemanski Hall.

This was Overton’s first trip to Clemson since the Tigers officially offered him a scholarship back on June 1.

Dabo Swinney and Co. often stress getting some of the nation’s top recruits on campus and Clemson was able to do so with the quiet period currently underway.

Overton comes from a family of athletes. His older brother, Micaiah, is currently a defensive lineman at Liberty. Overton’s father, Milton, was an offensive lineman at the University of Oklahoma in the ’90s. His mother, Eunice, was a standout volleyball player at the University of Kentucky.

Numerous top recruits visiting Georgia football program in June

The Georgia Bulldogs and Kirby Smart hold the top-ranked recruiting class for the class of 2022 and 2023. Who is visiting UGA in June?

Recruiting visits are back for college football! For the first time since March 2020, the NCAA’s recruiting dead period is lifted.

The Georgia Bulldogs and Kirby Smart hold the top-ranked recruiting class for the class of 2022 and 2023. There is still a long way to go, but the Dawgs have a promising amount of talent lined up to visit in June.

College football recruiting is feeling more normal. It will be a crazy month of June. Numerous prospects have committed to schools without visiting the schools in person. June is expected to be one of the busiest college football recruiting months ever.

Who are some of the top prospects set to visit the University of Georgia in June?

Texas offers Lebbeus Overton, the No. 1 player in 2023 recruiting class

Texas is finally getting in the game for the No. 1 prospect in the ’23 class. On Monday, UT offered five-star strongside DE Lebbeus Overton.

Texas is finally getting in the game for the No. 1 prospect in the 2023 recruiting class. On Monday, the Longhorns offered five-star strongside defensive end Lebbeus Overton.

Much like quarterback target Quinn Ewers, Overton is rated a perfect 1.000 on the 247Sports composite. Overton has been the No. 1 player ever since the 2023 class rankings debuted in August 2020.

To say family connections go against the Longhorns would be… generous. Overton’s father, Milton, played college football across the Red River from 1991-1994. Five years later, he was the Associate Athletic Director at Texas A&M until 2009. One 247Sports crystal ball has been inserted for Overton in favor of the Sooners.

Pete Kwiatkowski’s scheme would see Overton project more as a defensive tackle than a defensive end. He is about 20 pounds lighter than Alfred Collins coming out of high school but is only a sophomore and will have plenty of room to grow. Overton is athletic as well, even playing tight end last season.

Wisconsin football offers the number one overall player in 2023

Wisconsin offers the top 2023 prospect

The Wisconsin Badgers swung for the fences late last week as they extended an offer to the top player in the entire 2023 class according to 247Sports.

Wisconsin sent out on offer to Lebbeus Overton, a five-star defensive end from the state of Georgia.

Overton already has his choice of top schools, as Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Notre Dame, and many others are in on the highly-ranked prospect.

Overton had a monster 2020 season, finishing with 21.5 sacks at Milton High School. He plays both football and basketball, and is one of the most prolific pass rushers in the class of 2023.

Top-2023 recruit calls Notre Dame ‘amazing program’

Is Notre Dame football elite? Not quite, but to a top-2023 recruit they are “amazing”.

Notre Dame fans who keep an extra-close eye on recruiting are familiar with Milton High School in Georgia as a 2022 recruiting class commitment, tight end Jack Nickel is a student there.

It’s a 2023 recruiting prospect from Milton that is in the news for Notre Dame however as top-ranked defensive end Lebbeus Overton recently had some very positive things to say about the Notre Dame football program.

Speaking to Mike Singer from BlueandGold.com (click for the full article, it’s worth your time), Overton offered the following:

“I’ve watched a lot of their games. I don’t know how to describe it; it’s just an amazing program. They have everything you need to be successful.”

Overton is rated as the nation’s top player according to the most recent 2023 individual rankings that were released by Rivals.  Overton also told Singer that Nickel is in his ear about attending Notre Dame:

“He’s been in my ear a lot,” Overton said. “That’s my guy; we’re close. I’m glad he’s at Notre Dame. It’s an amazing school, especially for tight ends. Ever since I got the offer, he’s been on me and trying to hype me up about it.”

It’s clearly a good sign for Notre Dame that the nation’s top-rated prospect has that to share, but it’s hardly a two-foot putt that Overton will eventually commit to the program.

It’s a good first step and positive news, but a lot of work remains for Notre Dame with the likes of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Ohio State, Oklahoma, and Texas A&M just a few of those in pursuit of Overton.
