Saints add reinforcements from the practice squad for Week 17 vs. Bucs

The Saints added reinforcements from the practice squad for Week 17’s pivotal game with the Buccaneers:

The New Orleans Saints filed a couple of last-minute roster moves ahead of Week 17’s game with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, adding some much-needed help from their practice squad as we get closer to kickoff.

One of those moves was critical: backup right tackle Cameron Erving was promoted from the practice squad to the 53-man roster, taking the spot vacated by the starter Ryan Ramczyk going on injured reserve. Erving has backed up Landon Young (who has started in Ramczyk’s place) in recent weeks, but he exhausted the number of single-game elevations he’s allowed. The Saints need to keep playing him, so promoting him like this was their solution.

Additionally, the Saints elevated cornerback Shemar Jean-Charles for the second straight week. He was limited to work on special teams in his New Orleans debut against the Los Angeles Rams, but Jean-Charles ran with three different units covering punts and kicks as well as helping out in the punt return phase. If he can continue to do well there, maybe he’ll stick around.

Saints place right tackle Ryan Ramczyk on injured reserve, ending his season

The New Orleans Saints placed starting right tackle Ryan Ramczyk on injured reserve, ending his season with just two games left before the playoffs:

The New Orleans Saints placed starting right tackle Ryan Ramczyk on injured reserve, very likely ending his season. There are just two games left in the regular season so the only way Ramczyk could get back on the field is if the Saints win those last two matchups as well as a couple of playoff games. That’s easier said than done, especially without him in the lineup.

This is a tough loss, even if fans haven’t seen Ramczyk play up to his usual standards before missing the last two games because of this injury. But it seemed to be coming after Ramczyk recently opened up to reporters about the seriousness of his injury. He has a degenerative knee condition that’s resulted in cartilage loss which may leave him with lifelong problems in the joint. He’ll explore all of his options in the offseason, including surgery and, potentially, an early retirement.

In the meantime, look for the Saints to continue to start Landon Young at the right tackle spot. The former Kentucky left tackle has learned to play on the right side with New Orleans over the last few years and has been a serviceable backup in recent weeks, with Cameron Erving backing him up from the practice squad. But if this is it for Ramczyk, the Saints may need to look into a long-term solution at right tackle.

This player will be making his Saints debut against the Rams on TNF

Cornerback Shemar Jean-Charles will be making his Saints debut against the Rams on TNF after being called up from the practice squad:

Here’s a cool story. Cornerback Shemar Jean-Charles will be making his New Orleans Saints debut against the Los Angeles Rams after being called up from the practice squad in time for Thursday night’s prime time game, as first reported by NewOrleans.Football’s Brooke Kirchhofer. Jean-Charles wears the No. 38 jersey for the Saints.

Jean-Charles signed with the New Orleans practice squad a few weeks ago and earned the opportunity to show what he can do, likely starting out on special teams before working his way onto the field with the defense. But we’ll have to wait and see what the team’s vision is for him. He’s an interesting player as an undersized cornerback who doesn’t fit their usual athletic thresholds; we’ll see if those limitations affect him or if he’s able to make plays in spite of it.

But he isn’t the only player coming up from the practice squad for this matchup. The Saints also elevated offensive lineman Cameron Erving (No. 77), who started at right tackle in Ryan Ramczyk’s absence earlier this year. They went with Landon Young in that role last week against the New York Giants so it’s likely Erving will be backing up Young again on Thursday night. Stay tuned for pregame warmups and confirmation of who’s lining up where as the first- and second-string units make their final walkthroughs.

Report: Saints don’t expect right tackle Ryan Ramczyk (knee) to play vs. Giants

NOF’s Nick Underhill reports that the Saints don’t expect right tackle Ryan Ramczyk (knee) to be in the lineup against the Giants and Kayvon Thibodeaux:

This is a big loss. The New Orleans Saints are not expected to have starting right tackle Ryan Ramczyk (knee) in the lineup on Sunday against the New York Giants, per NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill. Ramczyk was limited in practice this week with a knee injury and was officially listed as questionable for Week 15’s game but it doesn’t sound like he’ll be able to play.

That’s big news for Kayvon Thibodeaux. The Giants defensive end has primarily rushed off the left side of the defensive line in recent weeks (on 71% of his pass rush snaps, per Pro Football Focus charting), going up against right tackles, which puts him on a collision course with Ramczyk’s backup. The Saints brought up Cameron Erving from the practice squad for this game in anticipation of Ramczyk’s absence.

Erving has held up well before. The Saints asked him to fill in for Ramczyk earlier this season against the Jacksonville Jaguars and while Erving didn’t match up with Jaguars sacks leader Josh Allen he did hold his own against Travon Walker and Dawuane Smoot. Thibodeaux is a unique challenge, though. He’s bagged 11.5 sacks this year after earning AP Defensive Rookie of the Year votes last season. It’s a lot to ask Erving to block him one-on-one. Let’s see what the Saints’ plan is for slowing him down.

Saints bring up reinforcements on offense for Week 15 vs. Giants

The Saints brought up reinforcements on offense for Week 15’s Giants game, elevating RT Cameron Erving and WR Marquez Callaway from the practice squad:

Some help is on the way for the New Orleans Saints offense. The Saints brought up reinforcements for Week 15’s game with the New York Giants, elevating right tackle Cameron Erving and wide receiver Marquez Callaway from the practice squad.

And they could both be active on Sunday. The Saints listed starting right tackle Ryan Ramczyk (knee) and their leading wide receiver Chris Olave (ankle) as questionable for this matchup due to injuries, and it’s possible both of them could be sidelined. Ramczyk was limited at practice throughout the week and Olave didn’t participate at all.

Erving started in relief of Ramczyk once already this season, during the Saints’ prime-time loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, so he’s ready to go again if needed. Callaway’s status is less certain. He’s been brought up from the practice squad twice already in the wake of a knee injury for Michael Thomas, so he may or may not have much to do with Olave’s situation. At any rate, we won’t get clarification on Olave or Ramczyk until the inactive report comes out 90 minutes before Sunday’s kickoff. Stay tuned.

Panthers cut OL Cameron Erving, 2 others to get to 53-man roster

The Panthers have cut OL Cameron Erving, CB Greg Mabin and DL Taylor Stallworth to reach their initial 53-man roster.

The Carolina Panthers made 24 moves leading into Tuesday afternoon’s practice, cutting 22 players and placing two more—guard Austin Corbett and defensive lineman Henry Anderson—on the shelf. So, that left them with three more to make before this afternoon’s 4 p.m. ET deadline.

And now, they’ve made them.

As announced 20 minutes after said deadline, the Panthers parted ways with three more players—offensive tackle Cameron Erving, defensive lineman Taylor Stallworth and cornerback Greg Mabin.

Erving, of course, pops as the most notable departure of the trio. The former Cleveland Browns first-round pick and member of the Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl LIV team re-signed with the Panthers back in May on a one-year deal.

He’s spent the last two seasons in Carolina, appearing in 20 games with nine starts at the left tackle position in 2021. In his lone appearance of the 2023 preseason, the 6-foot-5, 315-pounder allowed four pressures in just 14 pass-blocking opportunities.

Cameron Erving on Panthers’ O-line in preseason opener: ‘The s— wasn’t good enough’

Cameron Erving on Panthers’ O-line in preseason loss to Jets: ‘The s— was not good enough at any level . . . ‘

The Carolina Panthers’ offensive line played party pooper on Saturday.

In what was supposed to be a cheery introduction into a new era for the hopeful franchise, yesterday’s preseason opener ended being quite the stinker. The visiting New York Jets, even without four-time Most Valuable Player Aaron Rodgers, had their way—big-dogging the cats en route to a 27-0 thrashing.

Chief among Carolina’s issues was a feeble effort from its hog mollies, who combined to allow eight quarterback hits and five sacks during the exhibition. After the game, veteran Cameron Erving spoke about the private (and probably not peachy) meeting held by offensive line coach James Campen and the unit.

“Camp called us in, and we just talked. We had to keep it real with each other; the s— wasn’t good enough,” Erving said, via Darin Gantt of Panthers.com. “Top to bottom, it doesn’t matter if it was preseason, regular season, or offseason. The s— was not good enough at any level, from any position, myself included, especially myself. All we can do is come back, try to regroup, and f—ing fix it.”

From starter Bryce Young to backup Matt Corral, the Panthers’ passers faced a constant stream of pressure throughout the contest. Starting left tackle Ikem Ekwonu, who allowed a crushing hit of Young on the opening drive, had a similar sentiment on the sour performance.

“Just disappointed. Not what we’re looking for at all,” he said. “He shouldn’t be getting hit at all. That’s on us. We just weren’t good enough today.

“We’ve got to just attack it. A lot of things on tape we’ve got to fix. So that’s the goal going into next week.”

Hopefully for Young, Corral and the rest of the offense, the group will just flush this one and light a few matches.

Panthers’ O-line holds private meeting after preseason loss to Jets

The Panthers’ offensive line and coach James Campen held a private meeting after allowing five sacks in Saturday’s preseason loss to the Jets.

The Carolina Panthers are learning to set the standard, and what they did this afternoon certainly didn’t meet it.

Saturday’s 27-0 loss in the preseason opener was headlined by an overwhelmed offensive line—one that was thoroughly pushed around by a talented and deep New York Jets defense. As a result, offensive line coach James Campen and his hog mollies held a private meeting after the performance to talk it out.

Carolina’s line allowed eight quarterback hits in the outing, five of which ended as sacks. Rookie quarterback Bryce Young absorbed a few of them in his very first preseason showing, but was encouraged by the unit’s initiative.

“That’s something’s that big for us—not just as a unit, but as a team,” Young said. “As a unit—you can see the score—that’s not what we wanna do, that’s not what we wanna be. It’s no panic or reaction, but we have to be proactive in trying to get better and grow.

“And yeah, I think that speaks to the accountability. That’s them, on their own, going out and trying to establish the standard and talk about things. All of us—we’re in the locker room and no one’s thinking, ‘Oh, it’s okay. What we put out is whatever.’ That’s not who we wanna be, who we need to be.”

A few weeks ago, the Carolina Panthers brought back some reinforcements for their growing offensive line. And now, the numbers on those moves are in.

Both offensive tackle Cameron Erving and guard Michael Jordan were recently signed to one-year deals—with the former coming on May 8 and the latter on May 11. Erving’s pact, per Spotrac, is worth approximately $1.16 million while Jordan’s is at $1.08 million.

As for their cap hits in the 2023 campaign, Erving will cost $1.09 million and Jordan will cost $940,000. Those deals leave the Panthers, who may or may not want to call up a certain free-agent wide receiver, with $27.94 million in cap space—the second-most in the NFL.

So, with those hog mollies all inked up, here are the cap hits for each of the Panthers’ offseason signings:
