Cardinals have many late-season additions signed for 2024

The Cardinals made sure many of their in-season and late-season additions were signed through 2024.

The Arizona Cardinals went through a lot of different players on the roster in 2023. They made some late-season acquisitions with waiver claims, free agent signings and even signings from off their own practice squad.

In many cases, the Cardinals kept a slightly longer-term perspective. Many of these players were signed through 2024 rather than for just the remainder of the 2023 season.

It appears to be a smart move, giving the players some offseason stability and allowing the Cardinals to have players with a bit of a head start on what they will do next season.

These are the late-season additions to the roster who are signed through this next season.

Cardinals sign DL Phil Hoskins to roster, designate DL Leki Fotu to return from IR

The Cardinals announced some roster moves on Wednesday.

The Arizona Cardinals are losing defensive lineman Jonathan Ledbetter for the rest of the season to a knee injury, they are adding reinforcements to the defensive line.

They announced a few roster moves ahead of practice on Wednesday.

While Ledbetter is expected to be placed on injured reserve, that has not happened yet.

Here is what they did with the roster.

Cardinals sign S Joey Blount to 53-man roster, add D-lineman to practice squad

Joey Blount moves to the 53-man roster and the Cardinals add former Panthers DL Phil Hoskins to the practice squad.

The Arizona Cardinals made a few roster moves on Tuesday. The biggest one involved changing their punter, releasing Nolan Cooney and signing Blake Gillikin. They also made some practice squad moves.

They signed safety Joey Blount from the practice squad to the active roster and then signed defensive lineman Phil Hoskins to the practice squad.

Blount, a 6-foot-1, 201-pound safety, played last season for the Seattle Seahawks as an undrafted rookie. The Cardinals met with him in the predraft process.

He appeared in 11 games. He had a fumble recovery on defense and eight special teams tackles.

He played collegiately for Virginia. He played in 54 games, starting 32 of them, and had 306 tackles, 21 pass breakups, 19.5 tackles for loss, nine interceptions, 5.5 sacks and three forced fumbles.

Hoskins was drafted in the seventh round in 2021 by the Carolina Panthers. He is 6-foot-5 and 315 lbs.

In 2021-2022, he appeared in eight games for the Panthers, logging six tackles and a sack.

He spent part of the offseason with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Chiefs to re-sign DT Phil Hoskins

The #Chiefs are re-signing DT Phil Hoskins, who signed with the practice squad in Kansas City in January.

The Kansas City Chiefs have brought back a player who was a late addition to the practice squad last year.

According to The Score’s NFL reporter Jordan Schultz, the Chiefs have re-signed DT Phil Hoskins. A former seventh-round NFL draft pick by the Carolina Panthers in 2021, Hoskins played collegiately at the University of Kentucky, where he played under former Chiefs assistant coach and current LSU defensive coordinator Matt House.

Hoskins signed with the Kansas City practice squad on January 12 after he was released by Carolina. He was on the practice squad with the Chiefs throughout the playoffs and Super Bowl LVII, which means he’ll get a Super Bowl ring.

Listed at  6-5 and 315 pounds, Hoskins appeared in five games for the Panthers in 2022, playing a total of 44 defensive snaps. During the course of his two seasons in Carolina, Hoskins managed six total tackles, one tackle for loss and one sack.

The Chiefs seem to be beefing up their interior defensive line room with some competitive depth between Hoskins returning and the recent addition of Byron Cowart. Hoskins has a bit of a leg up on the competition being that he spent some time in the system last year.

4 Super Bowl LVII players with a connection to the Panthers

The Panthers have a few connections to Super Bowl LVII.

While the Carolina Panthers were busy hiring and introducing their new head coach, a few other teams were taking their best shots at getting to Super Bowl LVII. Oh, and some of the players on those teams just so happened to be Panthers at one time.

Here are a few names that might sound familiar in Sunday’s big game.

Former Panthers DT Phil Hoskins lands with Chiefs

After being cut by the Panthers earlier this week, DT Phil Hoskins signed with the Chiefs.

It appears as though the Kansas City Chiefs were a bit hungry, because they just got themselves a “Big Snacc.”

On Thursday, shortly after parting ways with the Carolina Panthers, defensive tackle Phil Hoskins landed with the Kansas City Chiefs on a deal to their practice squad. The second-year defender had his contract terminated by the Panthers on Tuesday.

Hoskins was taken in the seventh round of the 2021 NFL draft out of the University of Kentucky—where he played three seasons. At the 232nd overall selection, he was the last of a franchise-record 11 picks.

The 6-foot-5, 315-pounder played in eight games for the Panthers between 2021 and 2022. He totaled six tackles and 1.0 sack.

His last piece of action came in nine defensive snaps during the regular-season finale against the New Orleans Saints, the most he saw since Week 1. Overall, Hoskins appeared in five games in 2022—logging 44 snaps on defense and two on special teams.

Chiefs sign DT Phil Hoskins to practice squad, cut WR/RB Jerrion Ealy

The #Chiefs made a pair of roster moves on the practice squad on Thursday.

The Kansas City Chiefs have made a pair of roster moves on their practice squad during the playoff bye week.

The Chiefs have signed former Carolina Panthers DT Phil Hoskins to the practice squad. Hoskins was a former seventh-round 2021 NFL draft pick by the Panthers, selected just six picks after Trey Smith was taken by Kansas City. He played collegiately at the University of Kentucky, where he played under former Chiefs assistant coach Matt House.

Hoskins was released by Carolina just this past week.

The 6-5 and 315-pound defensive tackle has appeared in five games this season, spending time on both the Panthers’ practice squad and active roster. He played nine defensive snaps in Week 18 against the New Orleans Saints, which was his most since Week 1 when he played 16 snaps against Cleveland Browns. Over two seasons in Carolina, he’s recorded six total tackles, one tackle for loss and one sack.

In a corresponding move, the Chiefs released WR/RB Jerrion Ealy from the practice squad. Ealy was released from the practice squad on Dec. 27 and re-signed to the practice squad again on Jan. 3. Ealy could later be re-signed on a reserve/future contract with the team.

Panthers cut DT Phil Hoskins

The Panthers terminated the contract of DT Phil Hoskins on Tuesday.

Despite not having a head coach in place just yet, the Carolina Panthers remained busy with their roster early this week.

Along with the addition of cornerback Herb Miller on a reserve/future deal, the team made a subtraction in defensive tackle Phil Hoskins—whose contract was terminated on Tuesday.

Hoskins was the last of a franchise-record 11 picks in the 2021 NFL draft. The University of Kentucky Wildcat was selected in the seventh round, at the 232nd overall spot.

During his three years in Lexington, Hoskins totaled 53 tackles, 4.0 sacks, an interception, a fumble recovery and a forced fumble over 25 games. The 6-foot-5, 315-pounder appeared in eight games for the Panthers between 2021 and 2022—posting six tackles and 1.0 sack.

Carolina brought Hoskins back to the practice squad this season after waiving him on Oct. 22. He played nine defensive snaps in Week 18’s 10-7 win over the New Orleans Saints, his most since the Week 1 opener against the Cleveland Browns (16).

Panthers place DE Henry Anderson on NFI, sign three players

The Panthers announced a handful of moves on Tuesday, one of which landed DE Henry Anderson on NFI.

On Tuesday, the Carolina Panthers announced that they’ve placed defensive end Henry Anderson on the reserve/non-football injury or illness list. He will now, similarly to injured reserve, miss at least the next four weeks.

Anderson signed on with the Panthers back on Sept. 5, a move that prompted the surprising release of 2021 draft pick and fellow defensive lineman Daviyon Nixon. Through six games in 2022, he has recorded 12 combined tackles (two for a loss) and one quarterback hit.

The eighth-year defender, who was listed with an illness on Sunday, did not play in the Week 7 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Carolina also announced a pair of signings in cornerback Tae Hayes and offensive lineman Larnel Coleman.

Hayes, a summer standout, stuck on into the regular season as a member of the team’s practice squad. He has been called up over the last two weeks with injuries to Jaycee Horn, Donte Jackson and CJ Henderson.

Coleman, whose signing was first reported yesterday by Aaron Wilson of Pro Football Network, will join the 53-man roster from the Miami Dolphins’ practice squad.

Additionally, defensive tackle Phil Hoskins, who was waived on Saturday, will fill Hayes’ vacated spot on Carolina’s practice squad.

Panthers to sign OT Larnel Coleman off Dolphins’ practice squad

According to Aaron Wilson of Pro Football Network, the Panthers are signing OT Larnel Coleman off the Dolphins’ practice squad and onto their 53-man roster.

The Carolina Panthers currently have two spots to fill on their 53-man roster. And by tomorrow, it’ll likely be down to at least one.

As reported by Aaron Wilson of Pro Football Network on Monday evening, the Panthers are signing offensive tackle Larnel Coleman from the Miami Dolphins’ practice squad. The 6-foot-6, 307-pounder, by virtue of said poaching, will now move to Carolina’s active roster.

A University of Massachusetts product, Coleman was drafted by the Dolphins in the seventh round of the 2021 draft. The Maiden, Mass. native played in 36 games as a member of the Minutemen from 2016 to 2020.

Coleman has recorded just one regular-season snap in his two years with Miami. That play came in Week 3 against the Buffalo Bills at right tackle.

The Panthers, additionally, have officially parted ways with their own 2021 seventh-rounder. Defensive tackle Phil Hoskins, who played in five games over the last two campaigns, has cleared waivers and is now a free agent.
