2021 NBA Draft Big Board 3.0: Top 100 prospects pre-early entry deadline

As the NBA’s 2020-21 regular season nears its close, the league’s next wave of talent is preparing to take the great leap to become pros.

As the NBA’s 2020-21 regular season nears its close, the league’s next wave of talent is preparing to take the great leap to become pros.

Players have until the end of this month, May 30, to apply for entry into the 2021 NBA draft. They will then have until July 19 to determine whether or not they plan to stay in this class or (unless they hired an agent who does not have NCAA certification) return to school.

This is obviously an incredibly difficult decision and as the majority of early entry candidates have made their intentions public, those who are testing the waters are already weighing their options.

Fortunately, the NBA’s Undergraduate Advisory Committee (UAC) exists to help answer some of those questions.

The advisory committee, which began in 1997, offers feedback to prospects on their potential draft stock. As many prospects are facing pivotal decisions about their future, this kind of intel is incredibly important.

Players like Gonzaga’s Corey Kispert and Baylor’s Jared Butler both went through this process last season, likely were not satisfied with the results and opted to return. Now, after tremendous efforts last season, both are projected first-rounders.

These decisions have tremendous financial implications for these individuals as well. For example, even if Kispert or Butler went with the last pick in the first round in 2020, they would have likely earned a contract worth around $5 million over three years. This year, even if they went outside of the lottery at at No. 15 overall, that would be around $8.5 million.

With that in mind, for the latest version of For The Win’s 2021 NBA draft big board, I’ve provided my evaluation for the top prospects expected to be in the pre-draft process. Players excluded from this exercise were likely because the reporting suggests that they are going back to school.

Note that these decisions were fully based on where I would have each player ranked, not a projection, although various conversations with scouts as well as other talent evaluators around the league have factored into my evaluation.

A look at the Big Ten basketball scoring leaders in 2020-21

As we continue to look back at the Big Ten’s accomplishments of last season, the conference featured some of the country’s premier scorers including Indiana forward Trayce Jackson-Davis, Illinois guard Ayo Dosunmu and Iowa center Luka Garza.

Although no Badgers were able to crack the top 10 in points per game, Wisconsin guard D’Mitrik Trice did make it into the top 15. Despite Trice not always being the most consistent scorer for Wisconsin last season, his 3-point range and clutch scoring runs were oftentimes the only offense for the Badgers down the stretch. Not surprisingly, Trice led the Badgers in both points and assists last season.

Below is the ranking of the top 15 players in points per game from the Big Ten Conference 2020-21 season. Players from Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Michigan State, Ohio State, Purdue, Nebraska, Penn State and Maryland have all made the list:

Ohio State vs. Oral Roberts NCAA Tournament basketball preview, prediction, and odds

Ohio State is set to kick off its NCAA Tournament journey on Friday against No. 15 seed Oral Roberts. We’ve got your preview and prediction.

Records

No. 2 seed Ohio State 21-9 (12-7), No. 15 seed Oral Roberts 16-10 (10-5 Summit League)

Broadcast, TV, Game Time

Date: Friday, March 19
Game Time: 3 p.m.
Venue: Mackey Arena – West Lafayette, IN
Network: CBS

And so it begins. March Madness gets in full swing on Friday with a slew of first-round games. One of those involves your No. 2 seeded Ohio State Buckeyes taking on upstart, No. 15 seeded Oral Roberts from the Summit League.

It’s not often that a No. 15 seed upsets a No. 2 seed, but it has happened eight times during the NCAA Tournament’s history, the last coming in 2016 with Middle Tennessee’s upset of Michigan State (sorry to bring that up Sparty). And yeah, as we’ve seen, anything can happen in March.

All of that being said, OSU is a heavy favorite and should take care of business. If it does, it’ll face the winner of Florida and Virginia Tech on Sunday.

As is customary, we have all you need to know for this matchup with our game preview and prediction.

Ohio State hanging tough against Illinois, down four at half

Ohio State has not looked very efficient in the first half against Illinois, but it trails by just for heading to the locker room.

It has not been a clinic for Ohio State on either end of the floor in the first twenty minutes against Illinois, but it’s only down four at halftime 41-37.

The offense has struggled once again to find any consistency, shooting just 42.4% from the field. Duane Washington leads OSU with 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting from the floor, drilling 2-of-4 from beyond the arc. No other Ohio State player is in double figures, though Justice Sueing has nine points heading to the locker room. E.J. Liddell has been held to just five points on 2-of-7 shooting.

Illinois should probably be up by more. The Illini have filled up the hoop at a 62.1% clip and are more or less dictating things on both ends of the floor. The lead has been up to double digits, but OSU was able to claw back just before halftime to be within striking distance. Committing just four turnovers has helped that cause.

If there’s one big issue that needs addressing for Ohio State, it’s how to stop Illinois from getting shots going to the rim. Not only does center Kofi Cockburn have ten points all in the paint, but several dribble drives have gone unchecked, and that’s why the shooting percentage has been so high for the Illini.

It’s still going to be hard to pull this one out for the Buckeyes unless there is a mindset change in the second half, but they are right there. A win would be huge.

Ohio State vs. Illinois Big Ten basketball preview, prediction, and odds

Ohio State is faced with another daunting challenge when it hosts No. 4 Illinois Saturday. We’ve got your preview, prediction, and odds.

Records

Ohio State 18-7 (12-7), Illinois 19-6 (15-4)

Broadcast, TV, Game Time

Date: Saturday, March 6
Game Time: 4 p.m. EST
Venue: Value City Arena, Columbus, OH
Network: ESPN

The chance at a Big Ten championship may be gone for the Ohio State basketball team, but there is still plenty to play for. Not only is a top-four seed and subsequent double-bye in the conference tournament still possible, but the Buckeyes could also still play their way into a No. 1 seed in the upcoming NCAA Tournament if they can turn things around.

Ohio State has lost three straight games which has knocked it down to a No. 2 seed in most bracket projections, but this team has put together a really good body of work. There are still some big-time goals still out there, and it would help immensely to win against an Illinois team that is on an absolute tear and probably now a No. 1 seed in its own right.

It should be a physical and entertaining game, so buckle up and enjoy this one on Saturday afternoon. In the meantime, we’ve got all you need to know to get ready for another massive clash in the Big Ten.

After a dominant victory against the Northwestern Wildcats to sweep the season series, the No. 23 Wisconsin Badgers will face off against the No. 5 Illinois Fighting Illini in the last game at the Kohl Center this season. The Badgers will be attempting to avoid a series sweep of their own, after they were dominated by the Fighting Illini 75-60 in their matchup on Feb. 6.

Forward Micah Potter has been outstanding off the bench for the Badgers in their last few games, including his performance against Northwestern where he scored 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Wisconsin will need Potter to be tough on defense against Illinois center Kofi Cockburn, who dominated in their last outing with 23 points and 14 rebounds.

Although the Fighting Illini were able to handle the Badgers in their first matchup of the season in Champaign, Ill., Wisconsin has a huge opportunity to upset the Fighting Illini at the Kohl Center. A victory for the Badgers would dramatically impact not only Big Ten Tournament seeding but NCAA Tournament seeding as well.

Michigan State Basketball upsets No. 5 Illinois to keep NCAA Tournament hopes alive

Michigan State beats No. 5 Illinois at home in the Breslin Center to keep their NCAA Tournament hopes alive.

[jwplayer mSDA56Ej]

Michigan State Basketball still has a chance to play for a National Championship.

On Tuesday, the Spartans were able to upset No. 5 Illinois in East Lansing to earn their biggest and most important win of the season thus far 81-72.

This was complete team win for MSU as they managed to play an extremely physical game against an Illinois team that usually thrives in the paint. The Spartans held Illinois stars Ayo Dosunmu and Kofi Cockburn to a combined 30 points on 11-for-29 shooting.

Aaron Henry led the way for the Spartans with 20 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals, and 2 blocks. Langford set a career-high with 16 rebounds to go along with 13 points, 2 steals, an assist, and a block. Rocket Watts also had probably his most impressive game of the year, scoring 15 points and adding 5 assists while running the offense.

Izzo used a revolving door of bigs on Illinois star Kofi Cockburn, but it was Joey Hauser and Marcus Bingham who stood out. Bingham had 7 points, 2 rebounds, and 3 really impressive blocks, including one against Kofi Cockburn that was a highlight of the night.

To his credit, Hauser had 13 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists, a steal, and a block, and he also helped ice the game with some clutch free throws and this dagger three:

Marcus Bingham Jr. might have had the play of the game for Michigan State with a huge block on Kofi Cockburn.

Michigan State Basketball is currently locked in a fun, exciting, and competitive game with No. 5 Illinois. The Spartans have been playing Illinois tough the whole game, playing one of the best games of their season thus far.

One of the best plays of the game came with a huge block from Marcus Bingham Jr. on Illinois star big man Kofi Cockburn. It looked like Cockburn had Bingham beat, but Bingham recovered to swat it off the glass.

The block then led to a really impressive layup from Rocket Watts.
