Julian Okwara returns to Lions practice, 5 others sit out

Julian Okwara returns to practice for the first time in weeks, while five other Lions sit out Thursday’s practice session

For the first time in several weeks, Lions defensive end Julian Okwara was a full participant in practice. No. 99 returned to action after missing the entire preseason with a leg injury.

Okwara’s appearance reinforces head coach Dan Campbell’s statement last week that Okwara could be ready for the Week 1 matchup with the Philadelphia Eagles on September 11th.

Alas, the Lions defense remains stocked with some injuries. Four defensive players sat out the portion of practice open to reporters:

  • DE Austin Bryant
  • S Ifeatu Melifownu
  • CB Amani Oruwariye
  • DT Levi Onwuzurike

Melifonwu and Onwuzurike have each missed considerable time with injuries; their absence is not surprising. Bryant and Oruwariye have been healthy and could just be getting some time off before a long break. The Lions are off from practice through the holiday weekend.

Tight end T.J. Hockenson also did not take part in individual drills. Hockenson does not have any known injury limitations.

Dan Campbell offers hopeful update on DE Julian Okwara’s injury

Lions head coach Dan Campbell offers a hopeful update on DE Julian Okwara’s latest leg injury

It hasn’t been a sunny week on the Detroit Lions injury front, but head coach Dan Campbell offered a ray of hopeful sunshine on Friday. Campbell indicated that defensive end Julian Okwara could be ready for the Week 1 opener against the Philadelphia Eagles.

“We’re hoping for Philly,” Campbell said when asked about Okwara. “He’s probably got the best shot of all of them to be back.”

Okwara has not practiced since the first week of training camp nearly a month ago. He’s been visible at practices in defensive huddles and has done some light work off to the side with trainers, but Okwara continues to miss valuable practices with his lower leg injury.

Campbell did not disclose if it’s the same lower leg that cost Okwara the final 10 games of his rookie season in 2020. He also missed four games in 2021 with an ankle injury. Okwara’s college career at Notre Dame ended prematurely with a broken fibula in the 2019 season, too.

Back to Campbell’s statement and the rest of the “all of them”. He’s referring to the players who continue to miss practices with injuries, notably DT Levi Onwuzurike, S Ifeatu Melifonwu and S C.J. Moore. It doesn’t look good for any of them to play in Week 1, based on what Campbell said Friday.

Lions Levi Onwuzurike and Julian Okwara miss practice again, should be ready for Week 1

Lions DT Levi Onwuzurike and Julian Okwara continue to miss practice with injuries but should be ready for Week 1

The Detroit Lions will kick off their preseason slate this Friday against the Atlanta Falcons. Unfortunately, they will do so without some key defensive members, Levi Onwuzurike and Julian Okwara, as they continue to miss practice.

Onwuzurike has not practiced for nearly two weeks after getting caught in a pile-up that looks to have aggravated the back/hip. The same problem area he dealt with during training camp kept him out for a significant amount of time and continued to linger throughout last season.

“We just got to get it calmed down,” Campbell said. “The kid’s in a good place, and he’s getting back from it; he’s put in a lot of good work and so get him calmed down and get him right, get him realigned, and I think he’ll be fine.”

After being drafted in the second round of the 2021 draft, Onwuzurike has been looked at as a key player for a defensive line that saw major upgrades this season after the drafting of Aidan Hutchinson and Josh Paschal. Unfortunately, with the injury setting him back again, he continues to miss out on valuable reps to get him fully ready for the upcoming season. Still, the coaches believe he is progressing despite not being on the field.

“Certainly, all the reps he can get is good for him,” Campbell said. “He needs ‘em. He needs all of them, just like all these young players do. But at the same token, he’s doing all he can do, and we’re doing all we can do to help him get back out there. He’s getting better every day, he’s progressing. We’ll just take it as it comes.”

With Onwuzurike dealing with the injury, players who might’ve been considered to be on the bubble have taken advantage of the extra reps they might not have gotten and are making some roster noise in the process, in particular, Demetrius Taylor. He continues to impress the coaches, and it will be interesting to see how he progresses throughout training camp and preseason.

As for Julian Okwara, he has missed his fourth straight practice with an undisclosed injury, and with his injury history, it is something not to overlook. However, while Okwara is hampering, a player that is looking quite impressive on the field is Austin Bryant, who has vastly improved and looks to cement his roster spot.

Even though each player has had their share of injury problems, Coach Campbell put minds at ease downgrading the severity of the injuries as the players should be ready for Week 1.

“Both of them have, I would say it’s not serious but yet it’s enough to where I can’t tell you, is it going to be a week? Two weeks?” Campbell said. “But it’s not a serious long-term issue, either one of those guys.”

Figuring out Julian Okwara’s role in the new-look Lions defense

Julian Okwara has a variety of different potential roles in the new-look Lions defense

One of the offseason puzzles the Detroit Lions must solve is what to do with Julian Okwara. The third-year defender doesn’t have an exact or easy fit in the new scheme and front that coordinator Aaron Glenn is implementing.

That doesn’t mean Okwara doesn’t belong or can’t be an asset. Far from it. But finding where Okwara’s skills fit best might take some experimenting. The Lions seem well-prepared to try the 24-year-old EDGE in a lot of different roles in the fresh attacking style of defense.

During last week’s OTAs, Okwara primarily worked with the linebackers and LB coach Kelvin Sheppard. That is where head coach Dan Campbell sees Okwara.

“We consider him a linebacker. He is a hybrid,” Campbell explained. “We consider him in base as a linebacker, more of a SAM linebacker or on the edge. In sub or in nickel, he becomes more of that defensive end. Third down he could become kind of that spin or stand-up X player. But, just as far as if you’re rolling out base, he’s one of the guys competing to be in our edge, SAM linebacker.”

Sheppard echoed those parameters for how Okwara will be used in 2022.

“Last year, JO lined up everywhere,” Sheppard offered up to reporters last week. “Over the center, on the edge, split out on the number two. You’ll see him stacked. When you’re able to have versatile players it opens up the playbook for the coordinator.”

The competition Campbell mentioned could be crowded. There are a few other candidates for the SAM role in the base 4-man front. That role is effectively a pass-rush specialist who aligns outside the DE, one of whom figures to be Julian’s brother, Romeo. That’s presuming three LBs on the field, a situation that will be far less frequent than with two or even one linebacker, however.

Okwara has had his struggles playing the run, both at playing and tackling in space and at setting an edge and forcing the issue. The Lions drafted James Houston, a more natural off-ball LB who also happened to emerge as a pass-rushing force at Jackson State in 2021. Charles Harris plays more effectively as a heavy SAM backer than a hand-in-dirt DE, too.

It’s the sub-package role, specifically when the Lions go to an odd-man front, where Okwara likely fits best. There should be some 5-man fronts with Okwara definitely in the mix as one of the ends. In a 3-man front — the primary scheme from the last few seasons — Okwara fits as one of the stand-up OLBs who rush from outside the tackle box.

5 returning Lions who are now fighting for their jobs

Between draft picks, adding free agents and scheme changes, these five Lions from 2021 face uphill battles to stick in Detroit in 2022

One of the inevitabilities of a draft cycle is that there are current players who will lose their jobs to the new additions. For the Detroit Lions in 2022, the draft class and free agency work from GM Brad Holmes and his crew have set up several holdover players to be fighting for their Lions lives.

The improved overall roster comes at a cost for the players at the bottom of the roster, or those who might not fit with the new scheme or regime. Here are five such players who will have to show a lot more in 2022 to remain in Detroit.

Lions vs. Cardinals final injury report: D’Andre Swift and Julian Okwara OUT for Detroit

D’Andre Swift and Julian Okwara are out, with 6 more LIons questionable with injuries for Sunday’s game with the Cardinals

The Detroit Lions will face the NFC West-leading Arizona Cardinals without their top two running backs. For the third week in a row, Lions RB D’Andre Swift has been ruled out on the team’s final injury report for Week 15.

Swift suffered a shoulder injury in the Week 12 tie with the Pittsburgh Steelers and has not played since. The Lions other primary RB, Jamaal Williams, remains on the team’s reserve/COVID-19 list, one of nine players who is expected to miss the Cardinals game with COVID-19.

The only other Lions player ruled out for injury is OLB Julian Okwara, who has missed time with an ankle injury. Six Lions are officially designated as questionable for Sunday’s game at Ford Field:

  • LB Alex Anzalone
  • LB Jalen Reeves-Maybin
  • DE Michael Brockers
  • LG Jonah Jackson
  • OT Matt Nelson
  • WR Josh Reynolds

The injury list does not include TE T.J. Hockenson, who was placed on IR this week after undergoing thumb surgery. Lions head coach Dan Campbell confirmed the move in his Friday press conference.

Lions vs. Rams: Best and worst PFF grades from Week 7

The Detroit Lions best and worst performers in PFF grades from their Week 7 loss against the Los Angeles Rams

Amongst their luggage, the Detroit Lions brought their bag of tricks against the Los Angeles Rams. It wasn’t enough to overcome the high-powered Rams as the Lions lost their seventh straight this season to a 28-19 defeat.

The majority of the populous did not give the Lions a shot at even competing with a potential Super Bowl contender, figuring they would get embarrassed out of Los Angeles. However, with two fake punts and a successful onside kick, the Lions were able to steal processions away and gave them a shot at potentially stealing this game away from the Rams. Unfortunately, the Lions were not able to capitalize on those efforts due to untimely mistakes but let me tell you, that is probably the most entertaining Lions game in quite some time.

Considering how often the Lions have been set as major underdogs this season, they have held tight against tough teams, giving some hope that the Lions are heading in the right direction. You can see the improvements the players are making and the coaching staff taking each loss as a lesson learned and applying for future matchups.

With this week’s top PFF performers, who can see the massive steps forward taken amongst the player, the bottom players are trying to find their footing.

Lions vs. Vikings: Best and worst PFF grades from Week 5

Detroit Lions best and worst players through PFF shows the highlights and struggles against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 5

Another kick to the heart for the Detroit Lions after the Minnesota Vikings stole the victory right out of the Lions’ grasp with a last-minute field goal to drop the Lions record to 0-5 to start the season.

On top of another loss, the Lions lose yet another player, WR Quintez Cephus, to a potentially season-ending injury, making everyone wonder how the Lions can have this much bad luck. But you can tell the players are fighting to the last second and giving their all, making these losses so tough it brings Dan Campbell to tears.

It will only be a matter of time before the Lions get their first victory, and many of these players will be out to help achieve that win.

Here are this week’s PFF’s best and worst players for the Lions in Week 5.

Lions PFF grades: Best and worst players against the Bears from Week 4

The Detroit Lions PFF grades reflect the continued struggles in the secondary and average showing from the offense against the Chicago Bears

The Detroit Lions seemed to be on the up and up competing against the top-tier teams this season. Heading into Week 4, you had to believe they were feeling good against the Chicago Bears team that gave up nine sacks the previous week. The only kicker was they competing against the Bears and themselves, turning to be their downfall.

With poor execution, sub-par defensive play, and the constant shot footing, the Lions could not get anything figured out until it was too late. Also, to add injury to insult, the Lions lost their best defensive player, Romeo Okwara, for the season, making a poor defense much weaker in the long run.

There weren’t too many stellar players this week, and it reflected in this week’s PFF grades for the Lions.
