March Madness is always an incredibly fun time for fans but it is also crucial for scouts who are focused on NBA draft prospect evaluation.

March Madness is always an incredibly fun time for fans but it is also crucial for scouts who are focused on NBA draft prospect evaluation.

After the opening weekend of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, we wanted to show love to the players who have already used their time under the national spotlight to increase their chances of playing in the pros.

Note that for this exercise, we are specifically discussing players who have done enough to increase their profile for NBA teams.

This means someone like LSU freshman Cam Thomas, who scored 27 points and 30 points during his two tournament appearances, was excluded. That is because front offices already knew that Thomas was a remarkable scorer. But he recorded just three assists total and did very little new to answer any other questions executives may have had about his game.

The same goes for someone like Villanova big Jeremiah Robinson-Earl, who has been one of the tournament’s best players. But he has also been one of the most consistent prospects in college basketball in 2020-21. So very little has been learned about how he projects to the pros.

Below, however, are the players who scouts may be moving up on their draft boards after the first two rounds of the tournament thus far:

2021 NBA Draft Big Board 2.0: Top prospects playing in March Madness

This includes some names to watch in the men’s tourney.

March Madness is set to begin, which means for college basketball fans, it’s the most wonderful time of the year. But it’s also one of the busiest times for scouts and executives around the NBA.

Last season, the men’s NCAA Tournament was canceled due to COVID-19, which makes the stakes even higher for those involved in this year’s event. It will be a fascinating few weeks of basketball, all unfolding in Indiana, and the games are sure to further illuminate who may be most worth targeting in the 2021 NBA Draft.

But in addition to the spotlight of college basketball fully underway, we have now also seen the entirety of the 2021 G League season. That included the inaugural campaign for the Ignite, a pathway to the NBA for top talents who sought an alternative to the NCAA. Their exciting playoff run taught us more about prospects including Jalen Green and Jonathan Kuminga.

So with those results in mind, and with the college basketball postseason on the horizon, we have ranked the Top 100 prospects most likely set to make the jump to the NBA next season.

Our methodology for the rankings includes conversations with folks around the league, learning the general consensus surrounding a player, as well as a deep dive into stats and game film.

To put everything in perspective, we have also included everyone’s previous ranks from our last update, published on Jan. 22. This helps show whether a player is trending up or trending down and also helps illuminate how much can change in just two months of action.

As the madness begins during the men’s NCAA Tournament, follow along to see how these players are performing, as many will make a case to move up or down once the nets are cut on Apr. 5, 2021.

Alabama MBB wins SEC tournament, first since 1991

Alabama CrimsonTide basketball has won the 2021 SEC basketball tournament, their first win in 30 years.

Alabama men’s basketball entered the SEC Tournament as the No. 1 seed, having only lost two conference games and the regular season champions.

Today, the Crimson Tide defeated the LSU Tigers by one point, with a final score of 79-80.

These two teams have a bitter history, and it was evident in the two regular season games they played. Before today’s championship contest, the rival programs had to be separated.

Sophomore guard Jaden Shackelford led the team in scoring with 21 points, he also tallied five rebounds and four assists.

Anyone who has regularly watched Alabama basketball probably knows who led the team in rebounds. Herbert Jones got 11 total rebounds. However, Juwan Gary managed to grab eight.

The first win for the Crimson Tide in 30 years is massive for the program, it is also the first time in nearly two decades that an SEC program has won conference titles in both football and basketball.

Nate Oats is in his second season with Alabama, but has already received an extension through the 2027 season.

Alabama will now move on to the NCAA Tournament, where they are expected to be a No. 2 seed.

Alabama basketball continues their reign of dominance in the SEC, as their first game of the conference tournament is a monster win.

Alabama basketball earned the No. 1 seed, as well as a first-round bye, in the SEC tournament. With their first game of the tournament against Mississippi State, the Crimson Tide did not hold back.

The final score of the contest was 48-85.

The outcome of the game is a perfect example of Alabama’s style of play: fast-paced, high scoring offense, and strong defense.

Offensively for Alabama, scoring was evenly distributed, with Jahvon Quinerly being the leading scorer with 14 points.

On the defensive side of things, Herbert Jones, who was recently named the SEC Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the year, recorded seven rebounds.

Freshman guard Josh Primo went down in the second half with an apparent knee injury. He was helped to the lockerroom, and his status for tomorrow’s contest is unknown.

Mississippi State struggled to get moving on offense, and was unable to limit the Crimson Tide’s scoring opportunities.

Nate Oats and Alabama will face off against the winner of Tennessee vs. Florida tomorrow afternoon.

Alabama defeats Mississippi State, captures SEC regular season title

Nate Oats is already proving why he was granted a contract extension through 2027, as he has led his team to an SEC regular season title.

Nate Oats is in his second season with the Crimson Tide, but that is all it took for him to lead Alabama to an SEC regular season title, the program’s first in nearly two decades, the last time they won the regular season was in 2002.

Alabama took down Mississippi State 64-59 on the road, following a disheartening loss against Arkansas just a few days earlier.

This is Alabama’s eighth regular season title and the first SEC team to win both football and basketball regular season titles in the same year since Florida did it in 2006.

Alabama basketball head coach Nate Oats joined Scott Van Pelt on ESPN to discuss the state of the program and where the team is heading.

Alabama men’s basketball is one of the hottest teams in the nation with an overall record of 17-5 and a conference record of 12-2.

Credit ought to be given to second-year head coach Nate Oats, who had his first season cut short due to the ongoing pandemic.

Now, the No. 8 Crimson Tide is set to make a run in the NCAA basketball tournament as a highly-seeded team.

To talk about the success of the program, as well as the future of the 2020-2021 season, Oats joined ESPN’s Scott Van Pelt.

He mentions the slow start to the season, as well as the culture shift of Alabama basketball that the players have bought into.

In two parts, here’s what he had to say:

Herbert Jones selected by Eastern Conference team in latest NBA mock draft

Alabama defensive star Herbert Jones is projected to be drafted by an Eastern Conference team in the latest USA TODAY 2021 NBA mock draft.

Alabama men’s basketball is one of the hottest teams in the nation with a 17-5 overall record and 12-1 in conference play.

It’s likely that the Crimson Tide will be the No. 1 seed in the SEC tournament, and a highly-seeded team in the NCAA tournament.

With all of the national attention, some players have received a spotlight, allowing fans from across the country to watch them play, as well as NBA front offices.

In the latest USA TODAY 2021 NBA mock draft, only one Alabama player is drafted: defensive star Herbert Jones.

The mock draft has Jones being drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers with the No. 38 overall selection. While no reason is listed, it’s clearly due to his defensive strength.

While it’s great to see Jones’ name on the board, there’s a bit of shock about not seeing John Petty in the mock draft.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to publish updates on where Alabama stars fall in NBA mock drafts leading up to draft night on Nov. 18.
