Is Jawaan Taylor playing today? Injury updates for Chiefs OL

#Chiefs OL Jawaan Taylor is dealing with a knee injury. Here are the latest updates.

The Kansas City Chiefs’ will rely on their offensive line when they face off against reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett and the Cleveland Browns on Sunday afternoon.

One key concern for the defending Super Bowl champions is the status of starting right tackle Jawaan Taylor, who was listed on Kansas City’s injury report this week.

Jawaan Taylor injury update

Taylor was listed due to an issue with his knee that has kept him on the injury report for multiple weeks. Though he was a limited participant in the Chiefs’ practice session on Wednesday, he returned to full participation in drills on Thursday and Friday.

How long will Jawaan Taylor be out?

Taylor was not listed with a game status, indicating that he should be available for Kansas City’s Week 15 matchup against Cleveland.

Rookie Ethan Driskell is Taylor’s backup at the right tackle spot. The Chiefs’ other offensive tackles are Wanya Morris, Kingsley Suamataia, and D.J. Humphries.

Key injuries on Chiefs OL are bad news for Patrick Mahomes

Two key injuries on the #Chiefs OL are bad news for Patrick Mahomes heading into Kansas City’s Week 15 matchup against the #Browns.

The Kansas City Chiefs may be without veteran offensive lineman D.J. Humphries in Week 15 after he suffered a hamstring injury in the defending Super Bowl champions’ matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday.

Kansas City signed Humphries in November to bolster their offensive line after poor showings from left tackles Wanya Morris and Kingsley Suamataia.

Humphries made his first start of the season against the Chargers in Week 14, but he didn’t make a massive difference for Patrick Mahomes, who was sacked three times in the game.

Humphries hasn’t practiced since he was injured on Sunday and may have to miss the Chiefs’ Week 15 matchup against the Cleveland Browns.

Starting right tackle Jawaan Taylor was also listed on Kansas City’s injury report as a limited participant in practice on Wednesday, but he returned to full participation in drills on Thursday and is likely to be available in Week 15.

However, if Taylor is unable to play against Cleveland, the Chiefs could face the Browns with backups on both ends of their offensive line.

In Humphries’ absence, Morris would likely be forced back into the starting spot at left tackle, which could spell disaster for Mahomes against Cleveland’s outstanding pass rush, which is headlined by reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett.

Should Taylor miss the game, rookie tackle Ethan Driskell would fill in for the former Florida Gator.

Expect Andy Reid to get creative to ensure Mahomes has adequate protection on Sunday.

Chiefs OL celebrated 26th birthday after win vs. Panthers

A #Chiefs offensive lineman celebrated his 26th birthday this week after Kansas City’s Week 12 win over the Carolina #Panthers.

Kansas City Chiefs offensive lineman Jawaan Taylor celebrated his 26th birthday today after the defending Super Bowl champions’ 30-27 victory over the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.

Taylor played at the University of Florida for two seasons before being selected in the second round of the 2019 NFL draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The former Gator played three seasons with the Jaguars before joining the Chiefs in 2023. He was a key part of Kansas City’s offensive line in Super Bowl LVIII and is under contract with the Chiefs through 2026.

Taylor’s time in Kansas City has had its ups and downs, largely due to his struggles with penalties, but it seems the embattled lineman is heading in the right direction this season.

Expect Taylor to do his best to help clear a path for the Chiefs’ running game and keep Patrick Mahomes upright when Kansas City faces the Las Vegas Raiders at Arrowhead Stadium on Black Friday in Week 13.

Twitter can’t believe yet another missed call from Broncos-Chiefs game

The Chiefs got away with blatant penalties against the Broncos on Sunday. The NFL has to do something about the officiating.

The Kansas City Chiefs benefited from some questionable officiating in their 16-14 victory over the Denver Broncos on Sunday.

The most egregious case was a phantom illegal contact foul called against Broncos safety Brandon Jones in the second quarter. That penalty kept a Chiefs drive alive and was at least a four-point swing.

That certainly wasn’t the only questionable decision from the officiating crew.

NFL Network’s Brian Baldinger took to Twitter/X on Monday to show Kansas City’s offensive line getting away with an obvious hold.

“I don’t know, it’s getting like a little ridiculous right here,” Baldinger says as he shows Broncos defensive lineman John Franklin-Myers blatantly held by Chiefs offensive tackle Jawaan Taylor. “I’ll just leave the commentary to you. All right, they got the sack … but, I mean, I guess they’re just not gonna throw the flags.”

Fans, pundits and even former players have weighed in on the missed calls (and bad calls) from Sunday’s game.

Sayre Bedinger of Predominantly Orange summed it up well — it’s not that we believe there’s a grand conspiracy. Fans are simply tired of inconsistent officiating and Kansas City seemingly getting preferential treatment and the benefit of the doubt every week. It’s a recurring issue, and NFL fans are sick of it.

Refs missed a blatant Jawaan Taylor false start in OT during Chiefs’ winning drive

What a bad missed call.

Seriously. How many times is this going to happen?

We’ve seen Jawaan Taylor not get whistled for false starts, and then have some weirdness with illegal fomations.

And this time, in the Kansas City Chiefs’ overtime win on Monday over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, right in the middle of the drive that led to the game-winning score.

You can Taylor jump earlier than the snap, and no flag was thrown. This is a HUGE miss that has left people not too happy with the officials, but we all have the benefit of replay, for what it’s worth.

Chiefs OT Jawaan Taylor restructured his contract to help the roster: ‘I’m a team-first guy’

Kansas City #Chiefs offensive tackle Jawaan Taylor restructured his contract to help the roster: ‘I’m a team-first guy’ | @EdEastonJr

Kansas City Chiefs offensive tackle Jawaan Taylor spoke with reporters on Saturday about his recent agreement to restructure his contract. The new deal opened up space to make recent additions to the roster after several injuries.

“I’m a team-first guy, so anything to help the team win or help the team become better,” said Taylor, “I’m willing to do that, so it wasn’t really much of a conversation. I just had to make it happen, and when it was presented to me, it wasn’t even a thought. I was just willing to help the team.”

The veteran right tackle’s sacrifice opened the door for the trades that brought DeAndre Hopkins and Joshua Uche to Kansas City. Taylor reportedly cleared 5.3 million in cap space for the team.

“We always want the opportunity to get better and help the team in whatever way we can,” said Taylor, “We had a couple of guys go down with injuries and stuff like that, so I think the guys we brought in are definitely going to help us out.”

Taylor has played better this year, limiting the penalties that plagued his 2023 season. He is a respected veteran who is committed to helping the team win.

Chiefs scouting report: Ohio State Buckeyes OT Josh Simmons

The Kansas City #Chiefs could address their depth at offensive tackle by selecting Ohio State’s Josh Simmons in the 2025 NFL draft.

The Kansas City Chiefs invested plenty of draft picks and free agent money in offensive tackles over the past two years. They shouldn’t stop. Left tackle Jawaan Taylor saw his level of play drop significantly after arriving in Kansas City, and young draft picks Wanya Morris and Kingsley Suamataia aren’t yet starting-caliber linemen.

Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid make the situation work because they’re generational geniuses, but Kansas City can’t rely on that duo to cover for sub-par offensive tackle play forever. The Chiefs should invest more draft picks into developing their offensive line.

Ohio State Buckeyes lineman Josh Simmons started at both left and right tackle in recent years. He is unofficially listed at 6 foot 5 inches tall and 310 pounds and has arms that surpass the league’s thresholds to play offensive tackle. Simmons needs to refine his kick step and slide, but he flashes the explosiveness to handle speedsters and wide-alignment rushers.

Simmons’ lower half has room to fill out, but his upper body pops on tape. He delivers powerful blows in pass protection that stun pass rushers. Simmons’ hands pack the knockback to stall the defender’s rush plan, and his strong arm extensions lock defenders out of his frame.

Defenders struggle to play through Simmons’ frame in the run game. Simmons must play with better balance as a run blocker to sustain his assignments for longer. He stops his feet and lunges sometimes and allows his chest to drift over his feet. Simmons needs to clean up these flaws before entering the NFL.

Ohio State opens its Big Ten conference schedule on Saturday, Sept. 28 against Michigan State at 6:30 p.m CST.

Veteran Chiefs offensive tackle suffered a shoulder injury during Wednesday’s practice

Kansas City #Chiefs OL Jawaan Taylor suffered a shoulder injury during Wednesday’s practice | @EdEastonJr

The Kansas City Chiefs are getting hit again with the injury bug as another starter leaves practice early. Only a few days were removed from the injury to ‘Hollywood’ Brown during the preseason opener to the Jacksonville Jaguars, and another shoulder situation could already affect the starting lineup.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Chiefs starting right tackle Jawaan Taylor went down and was carted off with a shoulder injury that isn’t considered critical at the moment. Taylor made headlines last season for being called out by officials often for false start penalties. He is entering his second year with the Chiefs and has made strides in camp to eliminate those miscues for the 2024 season.

“Chiefs OT Jawaan Taylor suffered a shoulder injury at today’s practice.” posted Schefter to his X account. “One source said the team is “not overly concerned at this time.”

Taylor was a consistent starter at right tackle for the Chiefs last season, and if initial reports are accurate, it would be a sigh of relief if he doesn’t miss any time after the shoulder injury.

Andy Reid on Jawaan Taylor: ‘He learned a good lesson last year’

Andy Reid spoke about Jawaan Taylor’s progression during a press conference at #Chiefs training camp this week.

The Kansas City Chiefs’ offensive tackle positions remain a work in progress with Kingsley Suamataia and Wanya Morris battling for the starting spot on the left side.

Meanwhile, Jawaan Taylor is working with coaches at Chiefs training camp to correct the mistakes he made that caused him to be among the NFL’s most penalized players last season.

While speaking with the media on Tuesday, head coach Andy Reid went into detail about the progress he has seen from Taylor, who figures to be a key part of Kansas City’s offense in 2024.

“He’s working hard,” Reid said of Taylor. “I think he settled down in that last quarter of [last] season. As far as penalties go, he started out like he did [in] the first game, and he got away with a couple of things as far as being deep and then he got nailed for it after that, so that’s how that goes.

“I think he learned a good lesson last year, and it looked like he finished strong so that was a positive – [He’s] picking up in a good spot with the OTAs and these practices we’ve had up here [in St. Joe].”

Taylor is among the Chiefs’ highest-paid players, and with a Super Bowl three-peat on the line, improvement in camp could make or break his ability to contribute at a high level.
