Falcons HC Arthur Smith says Jalen Mayfield will remain at LG

Mayfield has struggled at left guard, but the former Michigan Wolverine is staying put despite Josh Andrews’ return.

Coming off a bye in Week 6, the Atlanta Falcons have won two of three games and generally appear to be headed in the right direction. Head coach Arthur Smith addressed the media on Wednesday afternoon, giving some injury updates and discussing this weekend’s matchup against the Miami Dolphins.

One topic that came up was the return of guard Josh Andrews, who spent the first six weeks on injured reserve. Andrews figured to start this season at left guard before breaking his hand late in training camp. In his absence, rookie Jalen Mayfield filled in and despite a rough first two games, the third-round pick has shown signs of improvement each week.

Falcons to work out offensive linemen for practice squad openings

The Falcons released three players from their practice squad and according to head coach Arthur Smith, the team plans to work out some offensive linemen this week.

The Atlanta Falcons have yet to make any notable moves following their loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 1, but that could soon change.

On Tuesday, the Falcons released three players from their practice squad and according to head coach Arthur Smith, the team plans to work out some players this week along the offensive line, per ESPN’s Michael Rothstein.

Atlanta’s offensive line struggled mightily in Week 1 as rookie Jalen Mayfield was forced to make his debut at left guard due to Josh Andrews’ preseason hand injury. The offense did some good things in the first quarter before the wheels completely came off.

On the Falcons’ first two drives, we saw motion on offense, good tempo and a successful running game. It was short lived, but it was Smith’s head-coaching debut and he’s bound to improve.

The former Titans offensive coordinator sounds like he has done some serious self reflection in the days since Sunday’s 32-6 loss. Smith told reporters at Wednesday’s practice that he asks himself where he can improve every day, per Tori McElhaney.

With 1-0 Tampa Bay on deck in Week 2, Atlanta will need to be locked in order to avoid an 0-2 start to the season. Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady may be getting up there in age, but he’s still playing at a high level at 44 years old. Last Thursday, he led a game-winning drive to clinch a victory over the Cowboys.

Smith talked about the challenge that Brady presents, calling him “one of the best ever in situational football.”

Brady has already taken to trolling the Falcons on his Instagram earlier this week about a certain Super Bowl game, despite beating Atlanta twice in 2020.

Ryan is learning to grin and bare the tired “28-3” jokes, or least trying to be a good sport about it.

Falcons rookie Jalen Mayfield fills in for Josh Andrews at LG

It appears the Falcons may have suffered a minor injury setback as starting left guard Josh Andrews walked off the field during practice.

The Atlanta Falcons appeared to have suffered a minor setback as starting left guard Josh Andrews exited the team’s joint practice with the Miami Dolphins early on Wednesday with an apparent injury. Andrews would not return and in his absence, rookie Jalen Mayfield stepped in at guard.

Mayfield began practicing at left guard earlier in the week after taking 27 offensive snaps at right tackle in the Falcons’ Week 1 loss to the Titans. A switch to left guard permanently could be in store for the rookie lineman with right tackle Kaleb McGary back in the fold.

UPDATE: Falcons head coach Arthur Smith said Andrews was cramping up and that’s why he left the field.

John Cominsky in concussion protocol, Jalen Mayfield working at LG

John Cominsky suffered a head injury in the fourth quarter of Friday’s loss to the Tennessee Titans and is now in the concussion protocol.

The Atlanta Falcons got back to work on Monday morning following their underwhelming preseason debut over the weekend. Defensive lineman John Cominsky suffered a head injury in the fourth quarter of Friday’s loss to the Tennessee Titans and is now in the NFL’s concussion protocol.

Cominsky will be out this week for the team’s joint practices with the Miami Dolphins and won’t suit up for Saturday’s preseason matchup.

Other news coming out of practice Monday is rookie Jalen Mayfield practicing at left guard. Many projected Mayfield as a guard when the Falcons drafted him, but he has played mostly at right tackle through camp thus far.

According to ESPN’s Michael Rothstein, the former Michigan offensive lineman is battling Josh Andrews at left guard and has been running with the second-team offense.

The Falcons’ offensive line got abused by the Titans in their preseason opener, with left guard being among the biggest issues. Atlanta’s quarterbacks completed just seven of 21 pass attempts and the running backs didn’t fare much better.

Check back for highlights after Monday’s practice.

Was Kyle Pitts the Falcons’ top draft choice all along?

After the 49ers selected Trey Lance with the No. 3 pick, it was fairly evident that if the Falcons didn’t receive any enticing trade offers, they were staying at No. 4 and selecting Florida tight end Kyle Pitts.

After the 49ers selected Trey Lance with the No. 3 pick in the draft, it was fairly obvious that if the Falcons didn’t receive any enticing trade offers, they were staying at No. 4 and selecting Florida tight end Kyle Pitts. NFL scouts and analysts have since raved over the the selection of Pitts and the team’s draft class in its entirety.

But if the 49ers had not selected Lance, would Atlanta have taken the North Dakota State QB over Pitts?

We have previously seen clips of the Falcons draft room after they selected Pitts and while conducting a trade with the Denver Broncos in the second round. However, a Twitter account named “NFL Updates” released a video clip of Atlanta’s war room prior to the team being on the clock, highlighting their reaction to the 49ers selecting Lance.

The excitement coming from the Falcons war room doesn’t necessarily stem from the 49ers taking a quarterback, because that was always the plan. When a team trades up from No. 12 to No. 3, it will almost always be for a quarterback. The pseudo-excitement in the Falcons’ war room only comes from an interaction between Falcons general manager Terry Fontenot and head coach Arthur Smith.

Once it was revealed who the 49ers were selecting, Fontenot and Smith joked in excitement citing Smith’s internal prediction from over a month ago.

“You called it a month ago,” stated Fontenot as he pats the back of the Falcons head coach, both smiling. Falcons owner Arthur Blank can even be heard echoing Fontenot’s comments.

So could this mean that the Falcons walked into the war room on draft night with Kyle Pitts as their number one option?

It’s probable. Every team, especially the ones picking in the top five, have clear plans for the different potential draft outcomes. Speculation was rampant leading up to the draft, but looking at how things unfolded, it does seem like the Falcons got their guy in Pitts.

As we all know, though, there is no way Fontenot, or any Falcons leadership, would publicly say they wanted any player other than Pitts.

2021 NFL draft: Best available options for Giants in Round 2

After a wild first round, the New York Giants still have plenty of needs to address in the NFL draft. Here’s a look at some Day 2 options.

The New York Giants were busy beavers in Round 1 of the 2021 NFL draft, but things will get no slower on Day 2 where the team holds two picks — one each in Round 2 and Round 3.

After addressing wide receiver on Thursday night, the Giants will likely turn to a different position on Friday night.

Here’s a quick look at several of the team’s Round 2/Day 2 options.

Cory Bonini’s 2021 NFL mock draft 4.0

Check out the final mock draft update for 2021.

Here’s my final 2021 NFL mock draft. I’ve projected a pair of trades inside of the top 10, each denoted with an asterisk.

We published more mock drafts and player profiles than ever before this year, so be sure to check our 2021 NFL Draft Central page to keep track of all of the offerings.

2021 NFL Mock Draft notables

  • In the last release, a projected Chicago-Atlanta trade gave the Bears their quarterback of the future. In recent weeks, I’ve come around to the idea of the Falcons taking Florida TE Kyle Pitts here. The offense will find ways to get him involved early on, and new head coach Arthur Smith is a former tight ends coach, so you know he’ll be excited to see what he can do with the phenom.
  • That doesn’t mean the Bears won’t make a deal to get into the top 10 for a passer. Carolina lessened its need for a cornerback after signing veteran A.J. Bouye, and I don’t see quarterback being a realistic option after the Sam Darnold trade — if for no reason other than politics. There is still a need for receiver help and a tight end upgrade, but both can wait. The Panthers and Bears swap No. 1 picks, in addition to Carolina picking up future choices for going down to No. 20, which enables Chicago to land North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance to learn in the short term behind Andy Dalton. Provided the GM and coaching staff survives, here’s their chance to get it right after whiffing on Mitchell Trubisky.

[lawrence-related id=458242]

  • I have the New England Patriots mocked for a trade with the Detroit Lions to get into the No. 7 spot to select Justin Fields, leapfrogging other quarterback-needy franchises that may be looking at dealing with Carolina for the eighth pick. Fields can learn for a year behind Cam Newton and then take over in 2022. Josh McDaniels’ system is notoriously complex, and there’s no need to throw Fields to the wolves in the upcoming season’s opening few weeks. If Newton struggles or gets hurt, then all bet are off as to when we’ll see the Ohio State product. I believe McDaniels will indeed replace Bill Belichick one day, and the current OC will have a say in which player he prefers to mold his playbook around.
  • The trade sends Detroit down to 15, where they can still land the best receiver remaining. It could be DeVonta Smith, if the Philadelphia Eagles find Jaylen Waddle to be a better fit for their plans. Waddle could “fall” a few spots and give Detroit the playmaker it likely would have chosen at No. 7.
