3 Browns trade targets from the Buccaneers after Tom Brady’s retirement

With Brady retiring, will the Bucs be in rebuild mode?

For the second time, Tom Brady has announced his retirement from the NFL and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Many are wondering if this is the beginning of a rebuild for Tampa and if so the Cleveland Browns could be buyers. They are in the need of both veteran players and more talent with eight draft picks in this year’s draft.

Though the team isn’t likely to trade for any massive contracts they could still make some moves if they feel the price is right. A look at three players that I believe the Browns could try and target if the Buccaneers become sellers this offseason.

Why Bucs fans should be excited about Joe Tryon

Breaking down the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ selection of Washington edge defender Joe Tryon in the 2021 NFL draft

Returning all 22 starters from their Super Bowl-winning team, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were still able to find a stud in Washington edge rusher Joe Tryon with the No. 32 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

The physical upside that Tryon possesses is apparent on film. He accelerates very well off the snap and has the first-step quickness needed to win on the outside speed rush as a pass-rusher. Mobile and fluid, he changes direction well in space and has the lower-body flexibility needed to sink low and turn the corner.

He also has a lengthy and well-built frame for the edge rusher position that could likely afford to continue to make improvements in terms of packing on muscle without sacrificing his speed. He opted out of the 2020 season, but he put up 8 sacks and 12.5 tackles for a loss in 2019.

Tryon will likely take on a limited role as a rookie unless either of Shaq Barrett or Jason Pierre-Paul get injured. His selection is more so of a long-term investment, ensuring the Buccaneers have a starting option off the edge if Pierre-Paul leaves in free agency after the 2021 season. Tryon’s athletic upside gives him a high ceiling for a team already stacked with talent.

Buccaneers draft former Husky Joe Tryon: Instant analysis of the pick

Doug Farrar of Touchdown Wire takes a look as the Buccaneers draft former Husky Joe Tryon at No. 32 overall in the 2021 NFL draft.

With the 32nd pick in the 2021 NFL draft, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers select Joe Tryon, EDGE, Washington.

Analysis: There is a phrase in life: “Do one thing and do it well.” That could apply to Tryon and his mode of attack as a pass rusher, as he wins primarily with a speed-to-power bull rush off the edge. Forget evading you, he wants to run through you. It works on occasion, but what gives me more hope about his NFL career is what you are seeing him use to complement that move. You are seeing examples of him using cross-chops and even the occasional rip/dip move to add to the weapons in his bag. He’ll need to be moved around the defensive line to be his most productive, though.

Grade: B. The Buccaneers have been aligned with Tryon for a while, and word was that defensive coordinator Todd Bowles was especially high on Tryon’s potential. Bowles is one of the NFL’s most creative minds when it comes to tying pressure to coverage, so it will be fascinating to see how the Super Bowl champs work Tryon into that defense.

Jags Wire’s final 7-round mock draft for 2021 with trades

The Jags in all likelihood will be selecting Trevor Lawrence Thursday night, but they must add some offensive contributors around him, too.

The 2021 NFL Draft is almost here, and for Jacksonville Jaguars fans, it’s arguably the most important in franchise history. Of course, the reason for that is because they are set to acquire a player who some draft experts feel is a generational talent in quarterback Trevor Lawrence.

However, most would agree that picking Lawrence will be the easy part, and more may be riding on the additions made after him, especially with Urban Meyer aiming for the playoffs right away. With that being the case, we went over to Pro Football Focus to fire up their simulator one last time to make the final 2021 Jags Wire mock of the year. Here are the selections we came away with in an attempt to build a strong offensive and defensive group around Lawrence:

2021 NFL Mock Draft notables

  • In the last release, a projected Chicago-Atlanta trade gave the Bears their quarterback of the future. In recent weeks, I’ve come around to the idea of the Falcons taking Florida TE Kyle Pitts here. The offense will find ways to get him involved early on, and new head coach Arthur Smith is a former tight ends coach, so you know he’ll be excited to see what he can do with the phenom.
  • That doesn’t mean the Bears won’t make a deal to get into the top 10 for a passer. Carolina lessened its need for a cornerback after signing veteran A.J. Bouye, and I don’t see quarterback being a realistic option after the Sam Darnold trade — if for no reason other than politics. There is still a need for receiver help and a tight end upgrade, but both can wait. The Panthers and Bears swap No. 1 picks, in addition to Carolina picking up future choices for going down to No. 20, which enables Chicago to land North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance to learn in the short term behind Andy Dalton. Provided the GM and coaching staff survives, here’s their chance to get it right after whiffing on Mitchell Trubisky.

  • I have the New England Patriots mocked for a trade with the Detroit Lions to get into the No. 7 spot to select Justin Fields, leapfrogging other quarterback-needy franchises that may be looking at dealing with Carolina for the eighth pick. Fields can learn for a year behind Cam Newton and then take over in 2022. Josh McDaniels’ system is notoriously complex, and there’s no need to throw Fields to the wolves in the upcoming season’s opening few weeks. If Newton struggles or gets hurt, then all bet are off as to when we’ll see the Ohio State product. I believe McDaniels will indeed replace Bill Belichick one day, and the current OC will have a say in which player he prefers to mold his playbook around.
  • The trade sends Detroit down to 15, where they can still land the best receiver remaining. It could be DeVonta Smith, if the Philadelphia Eagles find Jaylen Waddle to be a better fit for their plans. Waddle could “fall” a few spots and give Detroit the playmaker it likely would have chosen at No. 7.

10 potential 2nd round picks for the Lions

10 potential 2nd round picks for GM Brad Holmes and the Lions to consider in the 2021 NFL draft

So much of the focus for the upcoming 2021 NFL draft is on the first round. But there are seven full rounds, and the Detroit Lions sit near the top of the second round with another critical pick.

Rookie GM Brad Holmes and the Lions need to get a player with the No. 41 pick who is capable of contributing right away and emerge as a good long-term starter at his position. No matter what happens in the first round, the new regime has to be ready to land an impact fit on Friday night of draft weekend, too.

Here are 10 players at various positions who generally project to be available when the Lions draft in the second round. Not all will be on the board when Holmes and his experienced braintrust make the pick, and the unknown first-round selection could render some of them moot.

Mock draft watch: Draft Wire’s 2-rounder loads up the Browns defense

Mock draft watch: Draft Wire’s 2-rounder loads up the Browns defense

The latest mock draft update from our friends at Draft Wire is out, and it’s a journey through the first two rounds of the 2021 NFL draft. Editor Luke Easterling chose a couple of high-end defensive prospects to bolster the Cleveland Browns.

The first-rounder is a familiar name in Zaven Collins. The Tulsa linebacker has been the player most frequently attached to the Browns in mock drafts this offseason. Collins can play off-ball, thrives in coverage and can also step up and align as a pass-rushing EDGE.

Joe Tryon from Washington is one of the more intriguing pass rushers in the class. He gets the nod in the second round. Tryon opted out in 2020 after showing good length, burst and finishing ability for the Huskies in 2019.

Edge defender Joe Tryon could try on rotational role for Cowboys, fitted for larger one that suits him

Joe Tryon opted out of the 2020 season to prepare for the NFL Draft. While the last time he played was 2019, he is still a stellar player.

The Dallas Cowboys seem comfortable rolling into the 2020 season with Randy Gregory and Demarcus Lawrence as the starting defensive ends and there is nothing wrong with that. Gregory has not been the most available player throughout his career so if there is good value at some point in the draft the team needs to think about addressing the position. At worst they could find someone who could play a rotational role and relieve some of the pressure from both.

Enter Washington edge rusher, Joe Tyron. Tyron performed extremely well at his pro day and has been receiving quite a bit of NFL love contrary to the limited exposure he has had in the media. If the Cowboys do end up going the edge rusher route at some point in the draft, Tryon should be high on their board.
