Giants elevate Tommy DeVito, Jalen Mayfield from practice squad

The New York Giants have elevated QB Tommy DeVito and OL Jalen Mayfield from their practice squad.

With quarterback Daniel Jones (neck) out on Sunday against the Washington Commanders, the New York Giants have elevated quarterback Tommy DeVito from their practice squad.

DeVito will serve as the backup to starter Tyrod Taylor, who will be under center for the second straight week.

The 25-year-old DeVito is a New Jersey native, having grown up in Cedar Grove and attending Don Bosco Preparatory High School. He played his college ball at Syracuse before transferring to Illinois as a senior.

The Giants signed DeVito as a rookie free agent following the 2023 NFL draft. He was released as a part of final cuts in August but promptly re-signed to the team’s practice squad.

The 6-foot-5, 320-pound Mayfield was a third-round pick of the Atlanta Falcons in the 2021 NFL draft. He was released in August after missing the 2022 regular season due to injury and joined the Giants’ practice squad a few days later.

Mayfield has spent time on both the Giants’ active roster and practice squad this season, appearing in two games. This is his second standard elevation.

Following Sunday’s game, both DeVito and Mayfield will revert back to the practice squad.

Giants place Joshua Ezeudu on IR, reunite with Tyre Phillips

The New York Giants have placed OL Joshua Ezeudu on IR and signed OL Tyre Phillips from the Philadelphia Eagles’ practice squad.

The New York Giants continued to tweak and augment their embattled offensive line on Tuesday signing Tyre Phillips from the Philadelphia Eagles’ practice squad and Joshua Miles from the practice squad of the Atlanta Falcons.

Both players were added to the active roster. To make room for the duo, the Giants placed Joshua Ezeudu (toe) on injured reserve. They already had an open spot on the 53-man roster after waiving Jalen Mayfield on Monday.

This is Phillips’ secede stint with the Giants. He spent all of last season and training camp this year with the team before being released. He was signed by the Eagles before the season.

Miles was a seventh-round selection of the Arizona Cardinals out of Morgan State in 2019 and played four seasons for the Cards, appearing in 17 games. He was signed to the Falcons’ practice squad before the season after being cut by them in training camp.

One move many anticipated, the adding of Justin Pugh to the active roster, has not occurred as of yet. As a practice squad player, he can be signed by any team to their active roster.

Finally, after clearing waivers, Mayfield was added back to the team’s practice squad, filling the spot vacated when the Carolina Panthers signed defensive back Alex Smith.

Giants waive OL Jalen Mayfield

The New York Giants have waived offensive lineman Jalen Mayfield, who had been signed to the 53-man roster this past Saturday.

The New York Giants have waived offensive lineman Jalen Mayfield after signing him to the 53-man roster this past Saturday.

Mayfield was signed from the team’s practice squad after linebacker Azeez Ojulari was placed on injured reserve (IR). He took just a single snap in a Week 6 loss to the Buffalo Bills.

With Mayfield now on waivers, the Giants have an open spot on their 53-man roster which seems destined for Justin Pugh. He played all 77 snaps on Sunday, seeing time at both left guard and left tackle.

Pugh was returned to the team’s practice squad on Monday, which is a precarious position for the Giants. Outside of the injured Andrew Thomas, he may be their best offensive lineman at the moment and a potentially key piece moving forward.

Leaving Pugh on the practice squad opens up the possibility of losing him to another team.

If Mayfield clears waivers, expectations are that he will be re-signed to the Giants’ practice squad.

Any further personnel shuffling or roster additions are likely to come on Tuesday afternoon.

Giants place Azeez Ojulari on IR, elevate Justin Pugh from practice squad

The New York Giants have placed LB Azeez Ojulari (ankle) on IR and elevated OL Justin Pugh and QB Tommy DeVito from their practice squad.

The New York Giants have placed linebacker Azeez Ojulari on injured reserve (IR) with an ankle injury, dealing a blow to their already struggling pass rush.

Ojulari missed two games earlier this year with a hamstring injury and will now miss several more before he’s eligible to return. He’s missed a combined 13 games over the past two seasons.

Replacing Ojulari on the 53-man roster is offensive lineman Jalen Mayfield, who has been signed off of the practice squad.

The 6-foot-5, 320-pound Mayfield was a third-round pick of the Atlanta Falcons in the 2021 NFL draft. He was released in August after missing the 2022 regular season due to injury and joined the Giants’ practice squad a few days later.

Mayfield was elevated last week against the Miami Dolphins and took 45 snaps in the loss.

The Giants have also elevated offensive lineman Justin Pugh and quarterback Tommy DeVito from the practice squad. It’s the first elevation of the season for both players.

DeVito will serve as the backup to quarterback Tyrod Taylor, who is replacing the injured Daniel Jones (neck).

Giants elevate Jaylon Thomas, Jalen Mayfield from practice squad

The New York Giants have elevated offensive linemen Jaylon Thomas and Jalen Mayfield from their practice squad.

The New York Giants will be without offensive linemen Andrew Thomas, John Michael Schmitz and Shane Lemieux on Sunday against the Miami Dolphins.

With Evan Neal also dealing with some minor injuries, the Giants were forced to elevate a pair of potential reserves ahead of the Week 5 game: Jaylon Thomas and Jalen Mayfield.

The 6-foot-3, 311-pound Thomas was initially signed by the Baltimore Ravens as an undrafted free agent out of SMU back in May. He was waived as a part of final cuts and promptly signed to the Giants’ practice.

Thomas was previously elevated in Week 3 against the San Francisco 49ers.

The 6-foot-5, 320-pound Mayfield was a third-round pick of the Atlanta Falcons in the 2021 NFL draft. He was released in August after missing the 2022 regular season due to injury and joined the Giants’ practice squad a few days later.

For Mayfield, this is his first elevation of the season.

Giants shuffle practice squad after 15-player workout

The New York Giants made six practice squad transactions following a massive 15-player workout on Thursday.

The New York Giants made several changes to their practice squad on Thursday evening, officially adding six players while releasing two others.

Offensive tackle Tyre Phillips and cornerback Gemon Green had their practice squad contracts terminated, effectively giving the Giants six open spots.

Those spots were filled by the additions of running back Taiwan Jones, cornerback Kaleb Hayes, wide receiver Dennis Houston, tight end Tyree Jackson, guard Jalen Mayfield, and tackle Jaylon Thomas.

The 35-year-old Jones, a 2011 fourth-round pick of the Las Vegas Raiders, provides the most NFL experience of the group.

Jones has appeared in 137 career games, playing primarily on special teams. He has a history of returning kickoffs and could be an intriguing potential option for Thomas McGaughey down the line.

Mayfield, a former third-round pick of the Atlanta Falcons, is also an interesting addition. He started all 16 games at left guard in 2021 but missed last season with a lower back injury.

The roster shuffle came after the Giants hosted 15 free agents for workouts in East Rutherford, New Jersey on Thursday.

The 15 players who worked out were Thomas, Jones, cornerbacks Kalon Barnes and D’Angelo Mandell, linebackers Milo Eifler, Aaron Patrick and Ulysees Gilbert, wide receivers T.J. Luther, Reggie Roberson, Josh Vann and Dezmon Patton, edge rusher Jeremiah Martin, quarterback Adrian Martinez, offensive lineman Lecitus Smith, and safety Mark Webb.

Two released offensive linemen should interest the Commanders

The Commanders should consider adding these players to the offensive line for 2023.

In March, the Washington Commanders signed two veteran free agents early in free agency to start on the offensive line in 2023. Washington reached deals with Andrew Wylie to play right tackle and Nick Gates to play center.

In the 2023 NFL draft, Washington added Arkansas center Ricky Stromberg [third round] and Utah offensive tackle [Braeden Daniels]. Still, analysts and fans believe the Commanders didn’t do enough to fix a woeful unit.

On Monday, NFL teams began making roster cuts in order to get down to 53 players ahead of Tuesday’s 4:00 p.m. ET deadline. Washington surprisingly placed Daniels on the reserve/injured list with a torn rotator cuff. That meant the Commanders could be looking to add a veteran tackle.

But that doesn’t mean Washington should forget about improving the interior depth, too. The Commanders have depth at center, with Gates, Stromberg and Tyler Larsen, who will likely make the 53-man roster. All three can play guard, too. As we know, it’s all about position flex for head coach Ron Rivera.

Over the last two days, a pair of intriguing offensive linemen were released. The Falcons released former third-round pick Jalen Mayfield, and the Browns released Michael Dunn. Both are guards and while the Commanders could use a veteran tackle, they can’t ignore adding players with either a high upside [Mayfield] or who could push one of their current starters [Dunn].

Mayfield, who was a third-round pick in 2021, played guard as a rookie. He struggled. He missed the 2022 season, and by the time he returned, Atlanta’s offensive line was set. Therefore, the Falcons released the disappointing Mayfield.

Mayfield may just need a change of scenery and possibly compete with Saahdiq Charles and/or Chris Paul. At worst, he could provide depth while offensive line coaches Juan Castillo and Travelle Wharton continue developing him.

As for Dunn, his release came as a surprise. He appeared in 28 games with four starts over the past three seasons. The 29-year-old is a native of Bethesda, Md., and played collegiately at Maryland.

Here’s what Jarrett Bailey of Touchdown Wire said about Dunn’s work this preseason.

Another Cleveland Brown, and for good reason because Dunn was a menace over the last month. He showed consistent ability to pull and get to the second level. An athlete in space clearing the path for ball carriers is all you could ask for in a guard, and Dunn showcased that ability.

The Commanders are high on Charles and right guard Sam Cosmi. Both are talented, athletic and former tackles. Both have had issues staying healthy, especially Charles.

Mayfield and Dunn would give you different things. Mayfield could be another project that Washington doesn’t have room for, which would be understandable. But Dunn would provide an immediate upgrade for the room.

Cleveland’s social media team had wished Dunn happy birthday on Twitter earlier in the day on Monday before he was released.

Should the Commanders look into acquiring either of these players or wait and see if a capable tackle hits the waiver wire?

The frustrating part for many fans is that this coaching staff thinks this unit is good enough. Is it? It could be, but the Commanders shouldn’t be against adding outside help because there are plenty of questions surrounding this group.

Falcons designate LG Elijah Wilkinson to return from IR

#Falcons designate LG Elijah Wilkinson to return from IR, opening his 21-day practice window

On Wednesday, the Atlanta Falcons ruled out tight end Kyle Pitts for the remainder of the season. But on the bright side, the team appears to be on the verge of getting another starter back on offense.

The Falcons have designated left guard Elijah Wilkinson to return from the injured reserve list. Wilkinson now has 21 days to officially be activated, and could potentially play Sunday if the coaching staff thinks he’s ready.

According to Falcons head coach Arthur Smith, the 27-year old offensive lineman is getting closer but there’s no guarantee that he will be activated before Sunday’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Smith also provided an update (of sorts) regarding another injured offensive lineman.

Jalen Mayfield, last year’s starting left guard, has been out since training camp. The Falcons have yet to activate Mayfield, but believe he’s making progress.

If both players are healthy, you have to assume the team will stick with Wilkinson at left guard. The former Bears lineman outplayed Mayfield during training camp and has thus far been a slight upgrade over the former third-round pick in the regular season.

Falcons designate OL Jalen Mayfield to return from IR

The #Falcons have officially designated OL Jalen Mayfield to return from injured reserve, opening up his 21-day practice window

When the Atlanta Falcons released their initial 53-man roster back in August, offensive lineman Jalen Mayfield was left off and placed on the injured reserve list with a back injury instead.

Ten weeks later, the Falcons have officially designated Mayfield to return, opening his 21-day practice window.

Mayfield started 16 games as a rookie in 2021, but he struggled transitioning to the left guard position after playing primarily at right tackle at Michigan.

The timing works out well for Atlanta as left guard Elijah Wilkinson and backup center Matt Hennessy each landed on injured reserve in recent weeks. If the Falcons activate Mayfield in time for their Week 11 matchup against the Chicago Bears, there’s a chance he gets the start over Colby Gossett.

Currently, the team is playing Mayfield with the second team offense, according to D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Atlanta got another player back on Wednesday. Cornerback A.J. Terrell returned to practice after missing the three previous games with a hamstring injury. Check back this afternoon for the team’s first injury report of Week 11.
