Dolphins LB Jaelan Phillips’ injuries put football into perspective

Having to medically retire in college, he found other passions to put his energy into.

Before being selected by the Miami Dolphins with pick No. 18 in the first round of the 2021 draft, Jaelan Phillips overcame adversity in his football life.

His collegiate career began at UCLA, roughly 80 miles from his hometown of Redlands, California. His father had gone there, and after committing early and graduating high school early, the younger Phillips decided to follow.

However, shortly after coming into college as a top recruit, Phillips found out it wasn’t all fun and games, as injuries started to pile up. It was a sprained ankle in his freshman year that knocked him out for a few games, and then a concussion followed, limiting him to only six games played in 2017.

Then, that offseason, despite head coach Jim Mora leaving along with a mass exodus of players, Phillips stuck around.

His 2018 didn’t go much better. He was in a car accident that caused him to undergo multiple operations and remove multiple bones. Phillips played through pain for the first four weeks before he suffered another concussion and was advised to retire at just 19 years old.

Phillips called it “one of the most important things that ever happened [to him].”

“What it did was forced me to understand what real life is because you know, football is an amazing sport and it really teaches you a lot about life, but also feel like it shields you from a lot of what real life is,” Phillips said on the AthleteAnd podcast.

When football has been the biggest component of someone’s life for years and it’s the plan for the future, to have that taken away forces change and makes one think about their life from a further lens.

“Life is so much bigger than just football at the end of the day, football is just the game, get outside or football man experience things, travel, learn about new things, read books, just finding out what you like, what makes you tick,” Phillips said. “I think that’s the most important thing because you know, once football is taken away, if you already have all these passions and all these hobbies that you have, all you have to do is take the discipline that you have in football, and then apply that to whatever else it is that you want to pursue in life.”

After spending some time diving into music and struggling to find his next step, Phillips eventually entered his name into the transfer portal and joined the Miami Hurricanes. His performance in 2020 (45 tackles, 15.5 tackles for loss and eight sacks) earned him the honor of being selected in the first round.

Now, Phillips is making plays on the field for the Dolphins. This past season, he broke the franchise’s rookie record for sacks in a season (previously set by Bill Stanfill in 1969) with 8.5.

It’s been a strong start to his NFL career, and the future is bright for the introspective, young linebacker. That adversity that he faced in his college days will surely help him in his journey through the NFL and his life after,

Why you should place bet for Chargers’ Asante Samuel Jr. to win Defensive Rookie of the Year

Asante Samuel Jr. has the opportunity to earn the prestigious award.

This is typically a prime time for betting for the upcoming NFL season.

There’s an individual award that should intrigue sports bettors, as cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. is tied for the eighth-best odds to win Defensive Rookie of the Year at +3000, per Tipico Sportsbook.

That means if you place a $100 bet and Samuel wins the award, you pocket $3000.

The current favorite is Cowboys linebacker Micah Parsons who was taken with the No. 12 overall selection.

Like offensive tackle Rashawn Slater, somehow teams let Samuel Jr. fall to Los Angeles’ lap in the second-round where they drafted him.

Size concerns likely forced the slide, but that never held him back at Florida State as he stymied top receivers on a weekly basis en route to posting 97 tackles, 29 passes defensed and four interceptions over 31 games.

Now in the best situation possible by playing for defensive guru Brandon Staley, Samuel has been shining this summer. Whether it’s been in coverage or in run support, his presence his been felt.

While he appears to be a long-shot, I wouldn’t rule out Samuel as a serious contender for the award. His ability to always be around the football would tally up the stat sheet, which would then increase his chances.

The last two winners at the cornerback position were Marcus Peters (2015) and Marshon Lattimore (2017). The two posted eight interceptions and 26 passes defensed and five picks and 18 passes broken up respectively.

The bottom line is that if you’re a bettor, this is one you should place now rather than later into the season. Again, bet $100 to win $3500. Nothing to lose here.

Cory Bonini’s 2021 NFL mock draft 4.0

Check out the final mock draft update for 2021.

Here’s my final 2021 NFL mock draft. I’ve projected a pair of trades inside of the top 10, each denoted with an asterisk.

We published more mock drafts and player profiles than ever before this year, so be sure to check our 2021 NFL Draft Central page to keep track of all of the offerings.

2021 NFL Mock Draft notables

  • In the last release, a projected Chicago-Atlanta trade gave the Bears their quarterback of the future. In recent weeks, I’ve come around to the idea of the Falcons taking Florida TE Kyle Pitts here. The offense will find ways to get him involved early on, and new head coach Arthur Smith is a former tight ends coach, so you know he’ll be excited to see what he can do with the phenom.
  • That doesn’t mean the Bears won’t make a deal to get into the top 10 for a passer. Carolina lessened its need for a cornerback after signing veteran A.J. Bouye, and I don’t see quarterback being a realistic option after the Sam Darnold trade — if for no reason other than politics. There is still a need for receiver help and a tight end upgrade, but both can wait. The Panthers and Bears swap No. 1 picks, in addition to Carolina picking up future choices for going down to No. 20, which enables Chicago to land North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance to learn in the short term behind Andy Dalton. Provided the GM and coaching staff survives, here’s their chance to get it right after whiffing on Mitchell Trubisky.

[lawrence-related id=458242]

  • I have the New England Patriots mocked for a trade with the Detroit Lions to get into the No. 7 spot to select Justin Fields, leapfrogging other quarterback-needy franchises that may be looking at dealing with Carolina for the eighth pick. Fields can learn for a year behind Cam Newton and then take over in 2022. Josh McDaniels’ system is notoriously complex, and there’s no need to throw Fields to the wolves in the upcoming season’s opening few weeks. If Newton struggles or gets hurt, then all bet are off as to when we’ll see the Ohio State product. I believe McDaniels will indeed replace Bill Belichick one day, and the current OC will have a say in which player he prefers to mold his playbook around.
  • The trade sends Detroit down to 15, where they can still land the best receiver remaining. It could be DeVonta Smith, if the Philadelphia Eagles find Jaylen Waddle to be a better fit for their plans. Waddle could “fall” a few spots and give Detroit the playmaker it likely would have chosen at No. 7.

Cory Bonini’s 2021 NFL mock draft 3.0

Cory Bonini’s updated NFL mock draft is now available!

Here’s my third 2021 NFL mock draft. I tend not to project trades, but there was one deal that makes too much sense for both parties.

We are publishing more mock drafts than ever before this year, so be sure to check back with our 2021 NFL Draft Central page to keep track of all of our offerings.

2021 NFL Mock Draft notables

  • I project a trade between the Chicago Bears and Atlanta Falcons, sending a package of draft picks from the Windy City, including Chicago’s No. 18 pick to the Falcons for No. 4. Reports say there had been separation between the new head coach and general manager in Atlanta as to what should be done with the pick, until they came to a recent agreement. Atlanta is in a tough spot at No. 4 in terms of balancing current needs with available players that aren’t a reach. I can see this team staying put and drafting a cornerback, wide receiver or quarterback. The relationship between general managers Ryan Pace and Atlanta’s Terry Fontenot could help facilitate this trade.

[lawrence-related id=457182]

  • Several situations that appear to be obvious directions for teams to turn don’t necessarily compute for me. I’m not saying New Orleans, New England and/or Washington won’t add a quarterback in Round 1, but I’m not seeing the scenarios playing out favorably.
