Jalen Hood-Schifino says he would ‘fit in really well’ with the Brooklyn Nets

If Jalen Hood-Schifino is drafted by the Brooklyn Nets on Thursday night, he says that he would “fit in really well” with the team due to his combo guard skill set.

NEW YORK — The Brooklyn Nets will be immersed in the 2023 NBA Draft later on Thursday and as the NBA world gets closer to the start time of the draft, there will be more rumors than anyone can keep straight in their heads. With that being said, some of the players that will hear their name called on Thursday, like Indiana guard Jalen Hood-Schifino, had their pre-draft media availability on Wednesday and Hood-Schifino was kind enough to talk to Nets Wire about a few topics.

“It’s been a long journey, a long process,” Hood-Schifino said when asked how the draft process has been for him. Hood-Schifino has been mocked as going around the picks that are just outside of the lottery to possibly in the early 20’s which is where a team like the Nets can draft him.

After looking at a few mock trades that have been published recently, such as the latest mock draft done by Cody Taylor of Rookie Wire, it looks like there is a realistic chance of Brooklyn being able to draft Hood-Schifino. How does he feel about that possibility? “I think I can really fit in really well,” Hood-Schifino said when asked what he came away with during his draft interview with the Nets.

“Especially because obviously they have Spencer (Dinwiddie) there,” Hood-Schifino continued. Hood-Schifino, who finished the 2022-23 season as the Big Ten Rookie of the Year as well as making third-team All-Big Ten, said that he considers himself more of a combo guard because of his ability to score and distribute the basketball, similar to the skill set of Dinwiddie.

2023 Lakers draft prospect profile: Jalen Hood-Schifino

A look at Jalen Hood-Schifino, a guard from Indiana University.

It’s no secret the Los Angeles Lakers could be in the market for an upgrade at the guard position this offseason.

D’Angelo Russell, Austin Reaves, Lonnie Walker IV and Dennis Schroder will be free agents, and it seems virtually impossible for the team to bring back all four on new contracts.

In addition, the Lakers may want to take a big swing and try to add star power in the backcourt, whether through a trade or the upcoming 2023 NBA Draft.

One interesting guard prospect they worked out ahead of the draft is Jalen Hood-Schifino, a guard out of Indiana University.

Victor Wembanyama, Scoot Henderson headline players invited to NBA draft green room

The top prospects are beginning to receive invitations to attend the 2023 NBA draft from the green room at Barclays Center.

With less than two weeks to go until the 2023 NBA draft, the top prospects are receiving invitations to attend the festivities in the green room at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Teams each year vote on the players they believe will be drafted early, typically the top 20-25 prospects. Last year, 24 players were invited to the green room and only one player wasn’t drafted in the first round (Jaden Hardy).

The first two batches of invitations have been dispatched to prospects with 19 players on the initial lists, according to Jonathan Givony of ESPN. There will likely be at least one more group invited based on teams’ final rankings and player availability.

Here is the list of players invited to the draft green room.

2023 NBA Mock Draft 5.0: 58 projections after the early entry withdrawal deadline

Rookie Wire took a look at where the next draft class stands following the early entry withdrawal deadline.

The NBA pre-draft process crossed another important checkpoint on the schedule with the early entry withdrawal deadline coming and going this week.

Prospects had the opportunity to test the waters and meet with teams to gain feedback on their potential draft stock. To maintain their remaining college eligibility, they had to withdraw from consideration by 11:59 p.m. EDT on Wednesday.

The deadline saw several potential second-round picks withdraw from the draft and return to school. With name, image and likeness playing a prevalent role in college basketball, players were likely swayed to stay one more year to work on their games and capitalize financially.

[lawrence-related id=87858]

The 2024 draft is also projected to be weaker than in past years, which also may have played a role in some players opting against turning pro. They likely believe they will have a greater chance of being a first-round pick next year.

With several players off the board, teams can prioritize workouts and interviews with those individuals remaining in the draft. As a result, players’ stock will continue to fluctuate with less than three weeks to go until the draft.

Rookie Wire took a look at where the draft stands following the early entry withdrawal deadline. Team needs were taken into consideration for these picks.

2023 NBA Mock Draft 4.0: The latest projections after the draft lottery

Rookie Wire took a look at where the next draft class stands following the lottery.

The order of the 2023 NBA draft was decided this week by the lottery, and the San Antonio Spurs received the No. 1 pick for the third time in franchise history.

Of course, that means the Spurs will have the first opportunity to select 7-foot-4 French phenom Victor Wembanyama. They are apparently the team he had his sights set on, and he will now likely look to continue his basketball journey in San Antonio.

Elsewhere, Charlotte and Portland made jumps in their lottery positioning, and they now have more options to consider on draft night. Detroit dropped the furthest from No. 1 by virtue of having the worst record to No. 5.

With the order set, teams will ramp up their draft preparations.

This week, the league converged in Chicago for the G League Elite Camp and draft combine. Though many prospects skipped the 5-on-5 scrimmages and other testing, several seemingly helped themselves with great showings on the court.

Teams will continue to prioritize seeing those individuals that declared as early entrants since the deadline for them to return to school is May 31. Several prospects will have tough decisions to make in the coming days but should have more clarity after the combine.

Rookie Wire took a look at where the draft stands following the lottery. It is important to note that team needs were not necessarily taken into account with each pick. The projections are rather a look at where each individual player stands at this point of the process.

Warriors add Indiana’s Jalen Hood-Schifino in The Athletic’s post-lottery 2023 NBA mock draft

The Warriors landed some help on the wing in The Athletic’s post-lottery NBA mock draft.

With the Golden State Warriors’ title defense over and the NBA draft lottery set, it’s officially time to look ahead to the draft. Following the draft lottery on Monday, and the San Antonio Spurs landing the No. 1 overall pick and presumably top prospect Victor Wembayama, mock drafts are beginning to pour in.

While the Warriors likely won’t make noise at the top of the draft with a top pick, they will have the chance to add a potential contributor with the No. 19 overall selection.

Sam Vecenie of The Athletic recently dropped his post-lottery mock draft with the Warriors landing some help on the wing. At No. 19, Vecenie penned Indiana’s Jalen Hood-Schifino to the Warriors. According to Vecenie, the 20-year-old wing is a “strong on ball defender” with the ability to handle the ball.

Via The Athletic:

Hood-Schifino is a well-rounded, young prospect who won the Big Ten’s Rookie of the Year award this past season, carrying the Indiana perimeter while averaging 13 points, four rebounds and four assists. He’s also a very strong on-ball defender with real size for a ballhandler at 6-6. He’s shown great unselfishness and comfort in ball screens, with a penchant for knocking down midrange jumpers. However, he’s not a particularly adept shooter off the catch yet and will need some fine-tuning in that regard. If he can improve that and some decision-making questions, Hood-Schifino could get on the court a touch earlier than most one-and-dones. But the shooting needs to improve, as he made just 33.3 percent from 3.

Read Vecenie’s full mock draft via The Athletic here.

In his freshman season under Mike Woodson at Assembly Hall, Hood-Schifino averaged 13.5 points on 41.7% shooting from the field to go along with 4.1 rebounds and 3.7 assists per contest.

The Warriors will have until June 22 to prepare and scourt for the 2023 edition of the draft.

2023 NBA Mock Draft 3.0: Projections for every pick post-March Madness

Rookie Wire took a look at where the next draft class stands following the NCAA Tournament.

The NBA pre-draft process is in full swing as prospects around the world prepare to transition to the next level.

Teams around the league will begin hosting private workouts in the coming weeks as they finalize their draft boards. There will be various pro days on the radar and, of course, the draft combine and G League Elite Camp next month in Chicago, Illinois.

Underclassmen have until April 23 to declare for the draft. Several notable players have already decided to return to school, including Kyle Filipowski, Harrison Ingram, Baylor Scheierman and Kel’el Ware. Others are still mulling over their decisions.

With players still in the process of making decisions, some prospects were excluded from this mock draft because they are projected to return to school next season. However, most players projected to be drafted have already announced their decisions.

Rookie Wire took a look at where the draft stands following the NCAA Tournament. It is important to note that team needs were not necessarily taken into account with each pick. The projections are rather a look at where each individual player stands at this point of the process.

Note: The order of the draft was pulled from Tankathon as of April 14. The draft will have only 58 picks this year because the Bulls and 76ers were stripped of their second-round picks by the NBA due to tampering violations.

Big Ten Freshman of the Year Jalen Hood-Schifino declares for NBA draft

Hood-Schifino was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year after averaging 13.5 points, 4.1 rebounds and 3.7 assists in 32 games.

Indiana freshman guard Jalen Hood-Schifino told ESPN on Friday he will forgo his remaining collegiate eligibility and enter the 2023 NBA draft.

Hood-Schifino was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year after averaging 13.5 points, 4.1 rebounds and 3.7 assists in 32 games with the Hoosiers. His 117 assists were the fourth most in a single season by a freshman in program history.

He was also named to the All-Big Ten second team.

Hood-Schifino wasn’t on the national radar entering the season but quickly established himself as one of the top first-year players in the country. He shot up draft boards throughout the season and is considered a mid-to-late first-round pick.

Hood-Schifino is regarded as one of the top point guards in the draft, given his ability to shoot and put up points. Though he shot 33.3% from 3-point range on 3.5 attempts, Hood-Schifino has a great form and quick release that should enable a smooth transition to the next level.

Overall, Hood-Schifino projects to be able to step in and make an impact in the NBA with his offensive talent. He had a tremendous rise throughout the season and appears to be set to hear his name called in the first round on June 22.

Underclassmen have until April 23 to declare for the draft.

Podcast: Watching NCAA’s March Madness from a Rockets perspective

Today’s @TheLagerLine explores March Madness from a #Rockets perspective, starting with NBA draft prospects like Brandon Miller and Jarace Walker who could be in play for Houston.

French big man Victor Wembanyama and NBA G League Ignite guard Scoot Henderson are widely viewed as the top two prospects entering the 2023 NBA draft. But, who comes next? Enter the NCAA men’s basketball tournament, known best as March Madness.

Though the Houston Rockets are tied for the fewest wins in the NBA this season, that only results in a 27% chance of obtaining one of the top two draft selections due to flattened lottery odds. They are, however, nearly certain to land a top-seven selection.

With that in mind, Monday’s episode of “The Lager Line,” sponsored by Clutch City Lager of Karbach Brewing, examines the next draft tier after the two phenoms. Hosts Ben DuBose and Paulo Alves and draft analyst Madison Moore, evaluated college prospects such as Alabama’s Brandon Miller, Houston’s Jarace Walker, Baylor’s Keyonte George and Arkansas’ Nick Smith Jr.

The show also explores the differing competition levels between Wembanyama and Henderson’s professional teams, the NCAA Tournament, and other prospects such as Amen and Ausar Thompson of the Overtime Elite, as well as the NBA projectability of each.

Monday’s full podcast can be listened to below. Each episode of the show is also available via flagship radio station SportsTalk 790, as well as to all major podcast distributors under “The Lager Line.”

Five thoughts after Ohio State basketball’s loss at Indiana

The Buckeyes have had a January they’d love to forget #GoBucks

There was some hope that [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag] basketball could turn around their horrendous January stretch, but after falling to Indiana 86-70, they would love to forget the first month of the 2023.

Just two wins in nine games during the month, putting [autotag]Chris Holtman[/autotag]’s squad just one game above .500 at 11-10. It’s hard to believe that this team has tumbled so hard after being a fringe top 25 team for the first two months of the season.

This loss is just another disappointing moment in what is turning out to be a forgettable season for the Buckeyes. Once again, it was mostly bad and here are five thoughts after another Ohio State defeat.
