Danny Ainge confirms Jazz rookies will play in summer league

Danny Ainge confirmed this week that Taylor Hendricks, Keyonte George and Brice Sensabaugh will suit up in summer league.

Utah Jazz CEO Danny Ainge confirmed this week that Taylor Hendricks, Keyonte George and Brice Sensabaugh will be among the players to suit up for the team in summer league.

The Jazz introduced the trio this season after drafting them in the first round of last year’s draft. They each contributed at various times throughout the year with the Jazz, and a couple of them even saw time in the G League with the Salt Lake City Stars.

The organization has formulated an offseason plan for them to take the next step in their development. The upcoming summer will require plenty of work on and off the court, Ainge said, but the players appear ready for the challenge.

We’ve organized plans for them for the whole summer. I think they’re excited about it but it is going to be tough. It is going to be a lot of work. They will play in the summer league, assuming they’re healthy and still doing well. We plan on them playing in the summer league, along with whatever draft picks we have, Darius Bazley and Kenny Lofton. Those guys are in our plans and will be with us throughout the summer.

Hendricks, the ninth pick, averaged 7.3 points and 4.6 rebounds on 37.9% shooting from 3-point range in 40 appearances. He joined the rotation from the G League just before the All-Star break and played a large role with the team down the stretch.

George emerged as the player most ready to contribute, averaging 13 points, 4.4 assists and 2.8 rebounds in 75 games. The 16th pick finished sixth in scoring among first-year players and is a strong choice to be named to the NBA All-Rookie first team.

Sensabaugh spent most of the season in the G League, though played 32 games with the Jazz. He produced his best stretch at the end of the season, averaging 13.4 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.1 assists on 43.2% shooting from 3-point range over the last eight games.

Jazz coach Will Hardy gave Hendricks and Sensabaugh a larger role down the stretch with mounting injuries and the season out of reach. They offered a glimpse of what they can bring nightly and will now head into what projects will be a big summer for their future

Victor Wembanyama says Taylor Hendricks’ dunk attempt was ‘bad choice’

Victor Wembanyama spoke about Taylor Hendricks’ decision to go for a dunk late in the San Antonio Spurs’ win over the Utah Jazz.

The San Antonio Spurs picked up a 118-111 win over the Utah Jazz on Wednesday night. It marked their second victory in a row after they took down the Phoenix Suns without Victor Wembanyama on Monday night. Wembanyama returned to the lineup and, along with Devin Vassell’s 31 points, overwhelmed the Jazz.

Wembanyama took on fellow rookie Taylor Hendricks. With roughly seven seconds left in the game, Hendricks drove and rose for a dunk against both Wembanyama and Jeremy Sochan. Sochan sent him packing, as both he and Wembanyama were there to clean things up, not allowing Hendricks to dunk the ball in the final moments of the contest.

After the game, Wembanyama questioned Hendricks’ decision to go for the slam. (H/t Tom Osborn of the San Antonio Express-News)

“Regardless of the challenge of sometimes wanting to dunk on your opponent, it was a bad choice, I think,” Wembanyama said. “You got to be smart.”

Wembanyama finished the game with five blocks, while Hendricks scored eight points on 3-of-8 shooting.

Jazz rookie Taylor Hendricks to miss at least 1 week with injury

Jazz rookie Taylor Hendricks will miss at least one week after suffering a ligament sprain in his left big toe.

Utah Jazz rookie Taylor Hendricks will miss at least one week after suffering a ligament sprain in his left big toe, according to Andy Larsen of the Salt Lake Tribune.

Hendricks sustained the injury in the second quarter on Monday in a 127-115 win over the Washington Wizards. He was eventually ruled out of returning to the contest after recording eight points and two rebounds in 14 minutes of action.

The ninth pick will be reevaluated in one week after an MRI revealed the severity of the injury. He will likely miss at least the next three games while undergoing treatment.

Hendricks has spent much of the season in the G League with the Salt Lake City Stars. He returned to the Jazz at the beginning of February and is averaging seven points and 6.2 rebounds on 48.3% shooting from the field in 10 games over that span.

Jazz coach Will Hardy said last month that Hendricks would likely remain in the rotation over the duration of the season after the team made several moves at the trade deadline.

He believes Hendricks is settling in more with the team of late.

“I think I’ve seen Taylor improve physically over the course of this year, which has been a big emphasis for him,” Hardy said recently. “I think his approach has really grown. He has never lacked the want to. I think it is kind of just understanding how to go about it every day. That has been a big positive sign for me as a coach: He is learning how to go about his business every day.”

Former UCF forward Taylor Hendricks returned to campus on Saturday to watch the Knights host the Cincinnati Bearcats.

Former UCF forward Taylor Hendricks returned to campus on Saturday to watch the Knights host the Cincinnati Bearcats at Addition Financial Arena in Orlando.

Hendricks played last season with the Knights, averaging 15.1 points, 7 rebounds, 1.7 blocks and 1.4 assists on 39.4% shooting from 3-point range. He was named to the All-AAC second team and was one of three players in the country with at least 60 3-pointers and 55 blocks.

He wasn’t treated to a win by the home team, though. Cincinnati won 76-74. The Knights trailed by as many as 14 points in the second half, but tied it up in the final two minutes of play. They weren’t able to jump ahead and dropped to 13-11.

Hendricks is averaging 4.6 points and 2.9 rebounds in 17 games with the Utah Jazz. He has spent the majority of the season in the G League, averaging 14.7 points, 6.2 rebounds, 1.4 blocks and 1.3 assists in 22 appearances with the Salt Lake City Stars.

The ninth pick was highly touted as a player who can affect games on both ends of the court. The organization was impressed with his size, at 6 feet, 9 inches, and his ability to shoot and defend at a high level with his 7-foot wingspan.

After making several moves at the trade deadline, the Jazz will integrate Hendricks more into the rotation over the remainder of the season. They will watch him and monitor how he handles himself on and off the court and if he is ready to contribute nightly in the NBA.

Jazz coach Will Hardy on Taylor Hendricks: ‘He is going to be playing every night’

Taylor Hendricks has played sporadically this season with the Jazz, but that figures to change after they made several recent moves.

Taylor Hendricks has played sporadically this season with the Utah Jazz, but that figures to change after the organization made several moves at the trade deadline.

The Jazz were very active ahead of the deadline on Thursday, moving Kelly Olynyk, Ochai Agbaji and Simone Fontecchio. Their departures project to open up significant minutes in the frontcourt, clearing the way for Hendricks to see a larger role.

Hendricks, the ninth pick, was highly touted out of UCF as a player who can affect games on both ends of the court. The organization was impressed with his size, at 6 feet, 9 inches, and his ability to shoot and defend at a high level with his 7-foot wingspan.

Jazz coach Will Hardy confirmed Hendricks will see a larger role.

Taylor’s life is very different now. Taylor is going to be a part of our rotation. He is going to be playing every night. How much he plays every night will be determined by how well he plays, but his responsibilities now are far different. He is being counted on every night. He is going to be held to a very high standard in terms of how he performs on both sides of the ball.

Hendricks has spent the majority of the season in the G League with the Salt Lake City Stars. He has logged 14 appearances with the Jazz and has only played three times since the start of the new year, including a three-point, eight-rebound effort on Thursday.

The 20-year-old is averaging 14.7 points, 6.2 rebounds, 1.4 blocks and 1.3 assists on 35.6% shooting from 3-point range in 22 games with the Stars. He has scored in double figures 19 times, including a career-high 26 points on Nov. 29.

The team believes Hendricks has shown significant improvement throughout the year with the Stars and Jazz. He was known as a tremendous 1-on-1 defender with the Knights and is learning how to defend in a team concept.

Hendricks says that has been the biggest adjustment this year.

It is really just being in a whole different role. In college, I really wasn’t chasing guys off screens or forcing anybody to the screen and things like that. That is probably the biggest thing I’ve learned: Learning defense in a whole new aspect.

The team will integrate Hendricks more into the rotation over the course of the rest of the season. They will watch him and monitor how he handles himself on and off the court and if he is ready to contribute nightly in the NBA.

He is ready for the opportunity.

“We traded a few guys around my position, so my role is probably going to increase,” Hendricks said. “Whatever they ask me to do, I’m willing to do it regardless.”

Jazz rookie Taylor Hendricks registered his third double-double in the G League on Tuesday to lead the Stars to a win over the Charge.

Hendricks produced 13 points, 10 rebounds and one blocked shot in the 126-113 road victory. He went 6-of-10 from the field, including 1-of-4 from 3-point range, in 31 minutes of work in his 11th appearance with the Stars.

The ninth pick finished in double figures for the 10th time this season to continue a strong run with the Stars. It was his fifth straight game hauling in at least nine rebounds.

Hendricks returned to the G League after a recent stint with the Jazz, in which he averaged 5.7 points and 2.7 rebounds on 38.2% shooting from the field in 10 appearances. He was in the rotation for the first time and averaged 17.2 minutes per game.

Hendricks is averaging 15.1 points, seven rebounds, 1.5 blocks and 1.3 assists on 34.8% shooting from 3-point range with the Stars. He has registered three 20-point games, including a season-high 26 points on Nov. 29 in a win against the Ontario Clippers.

The former UCF standout will likely play another stint with the Stars this month before joining the rotation again in Utah. The team has been encouraged by his progress this season and believes the 20-year-old has a bright future.

Jazz rookies Taylor Hendricks, Brice Sensabaugh help hand Ignite 59-point loss in G League

Jazz rookies Taylor Hendricks and Brice Sensabaugh combined for over 40 points in the G League to lead the Stars to a win over the Ignite.

Utah Jazz rookies Taylor Hendricks and Brice Sensabaugh combined for over 40 points Monday on assignment in the G League to lead the Salt Lake City Stars to a dominating win over the Ignite.

Hendricks produced 19 points, five rebounds, three steals and three blocks, and Sensabaugh poured in a team-high 25 points, five rebounds and five assists in the 158-99 victory. In all, seven players scored in double figures for the Stars, who led by as many as 61 points in the game.

Veteran John Jenkins paced the Ignite with 20 points, while Babacar Sane had 17 points and Tyler Smith added 15 points off the bench. The 59-point result was the worst loss in Ignite history.

The contest was the second game for Hendricks and Sensabaugh in the G League. The two players have been out of the rotation to start the season with the Jazz, and project to log significant time with the Stars throughout the year.

Hendricks is averaging 12 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.5 blocks and 1.5 steals on 42.1% shooting from the field with the Stars. Sensabaugh, who missed much of the summer with a knee injury, is averaging 26 points, 6.5 rebounds, 6.5 assists and two steals.

The minutes in the G League will help Hendricks and Sensabaugh log meaningful playing time against increased competition. They have each shown, in a limited sample size, that they have the talent and ability to contribute in the NBA with added development.

Will Hardy on Jazz rookies: ‘They have not backed down for one second’

Hardy said there is a possibility that their three first-round picks see minutes to start the regular season.

Utah Jazz head coach Will Hardy on Friday said there is a possibility their three first-round picks see minutes in the rotation to start the regular season.

The Jazz added Taylor Hendricks (ninth pick), Keyonte George (16th pick) and Brice Sensabaugh (28th pick) through the NBA draft on June 22. The team also signed undrafted forward Joey Hauser to a two-way contract on July 3.

Of the trio of first-round picks, only George played in summer league. Hendricks (hamstring) and Sensabaugh (knee) were dealing with injuries and were held out of action. However, the three players are healthy and are ready for the start of training camp.

“The three of them are incredibly high character,” Hardy said. “They go at it. They have not backed down for one second out here playing with our veteran guys. Training camp is going to show us a lot. I think there is a world where each of them play could play themselves into minutes.”

George shined with the Jazz in three appearances before suffering an ankle injury in Las Vegas. He was named to the all-summer league first team after averaging 21.2 points, 6.3 assists and 2.7 rebounds on 44.4% shooting from 3-point range.

Hendricks is highly touted out of UCF for his ability as a shot blocker and floor spacer. Meanwhile, Sensabaugh impressed last season at Ohio State as a scorer given his size and ability to work at all three levels. Each projects to be able to help the Jazz.

Training camp will serve as a tremendous opportunity for the three players to make a name for themselves and lock in a spot in the rotation. The team will know a lot more about them throughout the preseason.

“If they come and they have a good camp and look like they’re ready to help the team, then that’s where we’ll go,” Hardy said. “If not, we’ll use the resources we have available to try to help them get ready as quickly as possible. All three of them are 19 years old.

“I think the biggest thing for those three players in training camp is not about me or (general manager) Justin (Zanik) and what we think of them, it’s about earning the trust of their teammates because if their teammates think they can help them win, they’ll be all about it.”
