Lakers’ Jalen Hood-Schifino underwent successful lumbar procedure

Lakers rookie guard Jalen Hood-Schifino underwent a successful lumbar microdiscectomy procedure on Thursday.

Los Angeles Lakers rookie guard Jalen Hood-Schifino underwent a successful lumbar microdiscectomy procedure on Thursday, the team announced.

A lumbar microdiscectomy is described as a minimally invasive surgery to fix a bulging disc, according to Johns Hopkins Medicine. The team didn’t give a timetable for his return but indicated further updates would be provided as appropriate.

Hood-Schifino will miss the remainder of the season following the procedure, with a typical recovery time of 2-3 months. The team expects him to make a full recovery in the offseason, putting his status for summer league in question.

Hood-Schifino logged 21 appearances with the Lakers this season, playing mostly mop-up duty. He spent the majority of the season in the G League with the South Bay Lakers, averaging 22 points, 5.5 assists and 4.8 rebounds on 43.2% shooting from 3-point range in 15 games.

The 20-year-old failed to crack the rotation for the Lakers, with several veteran players ahead of him on the depth chart. However, the team has been encouraged by his development and was impressed with him from the start of training camp.

The Lakers selected Hood-Schifino with the 17th pick last year out of Indiana. He was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year after averaging 13.5 points, 4.1 rebounds and 3.7 assists in 32 games.

Jalen Hood-Schifino underwent a back procedure

Rookie Lakers guard Jalen Hood-Schifino is done for the season after undergoing a successful back procedure.

The Los Angeles Lakers have had to deal with numerous injuries to their role and complementary players all season. While LeBron James, Anthony Davis and Austin Reaves have been relatively healthy throughout, several other players have had stints on the injured list.

Right now, guard Gabe Vincent, forward Jarred Vanderbilt and big man Christian Wood are out due to injury. While Wood is likely out for the season, Vincent may be nearing a return, and Vanderbilt seems to be slowly but surely progressing.

On Thursday, a new name was added to the list of Lakers players unable to play for a while due to a health ailment: Jalen Hood-Schifino. The rookie guard reportedly underwent a successful lumbar microdiscectomy back procedure to fix a bulging disc in his back.

He appeared in 21 games for the Lakers and has struggled mightily. He has had massive trouble getting his shots to go through the hoop. However, he has shown promise playing in the G League by averaging 22 points and 5.5 assists a game while shooting 47.3% from the field and 43.2% from 3-point range in 15 games with the South Bay Lakers.

Jalen Hood-Schifino scored 38 points for South Bay Lakers on Thursday

Lakers rookie Jalen Hood-Schifino has been showing some promise while playing in the G League, and he had a monster game on Thursday.

When the Los Angeles Lakers took Indiana University guard Jalen Hood-Schifino with the No. 17 pick in the 2023 NBA draft, there was plenty of intrigue. While some fans wanted the team to take someone else, such as Cam Whitmore or Jaime Jaquez Jr., Hood-Schifino seemed to be a fine prospect in his own right.

In his lone season in the NCAA, he showed an ability to create his own shot from the midrange area, hit the open man, handle the ball and be a decent defender.

But in spot duty with the Lakers this season, he has looked like a zero-impact player who has had significant trouble merely putting the basketball in the hoop.

There has been a feeling he would be better off spending most of his time in the G League so he could develop and gain some confidence. Well, in 10 games with the South Bay Lakers through Sunday, he averaged 20.1 points and 6 assists a game while hitting 41.3% of his 3-point attempts.

On Thursday, Hood-Schifino had a monster 38-point effort in a 131-126 loss to the Austin Spurs.

Perhaps Hood-Schifino simply needs a more seasoning and time to develop than Whitmore or Jaquez, both of whom have been producing efficiently for the Houston Rockets and Miami Heat, respectively.

The Lakers’ latest trade offer for Dejounte Murray, revealed

The Lakers and Hawks may have a starting point for a potential Dejounte Murray trade.

After the Los Angeles Lakers’ latest inexcusable loss, which came on Friday to the dismal Brooklyn Nets, the pressure is mounting even more on a franchise that was fully expecting to contend for the NBA championship this season.

The need for some sort of shake-up is increasing, and with no indication that head coach Darvin Ham’s job is in jeopardy, that shake-up will have to be a trade.

Although the Lakers reportedly have several trade targets, the one they seem most zeroed in on is Atlanta Hawks guard Dejounte Murray. While the two teams have talked about a potential deal, the Lakers have been unwilling to include Austin Reaves, a player Atlanta wants, in any potential trade.

Jovan Buha revealed a framework for a possible deal has been discussed. That framework consists of D’Angelo Russell, rookie guard Jalen Hood-Schifino and draft capital.

Via The Athletic:

“The Murray buzz is only increasing — and to noisy levels. The Lakers and Hawks have discussed potential frameworks of a deal, including a version late last week that centered on Russell, Hood-Schifino, the 2029 first-round pick and additional draft compensation, according to multiple team and league sources. Talks have since stalled, but are expected to pick back up closer to the deadline.”

While Murray is certainly a very good player (he hit game-winning shots in back-to-back games this week), it is an open question whether he would be enough to reverse the Lakers’ fortunes. It seems their problems now run deeper than mere roster deficiencies.

Writer suggests interesting Zach LaVine-less Lakers trade with Bulls

One journalist suggested a trade between the Lakers and Bulls that could improve the Lakers without the risk of taking on Zach LaVine.

The Los Angeles Lakers are 15-11 about two months into the NBA season, and they have fallen to eighth place in the Western Conference. While it clearly isn’t time to panic, some mild concern is warranted, given the legitimate championship expectations the team had when the season started.

Many believe L.A.’s biggest weaknesses are 3-point shooting, perimeter defense and perhaps frontcourt or wing depth. Some also believe the team needs a legitimate third scoring option to take some pressure off LeBron James and help it remain productive when the superstar is resting.

That has led to much speculation that Los Angeles is going to go after Chicago Bulls star Zach LaVine via trade. However, people seem divided on whether that would be a prudent move for the Lakers. At least one prominent writer has said he isn’t who they should go after.

On the other hand, the Bulls have other intriguing trade targets, and many believe they will soon have a fire sale since they’re going nowhere fast.

Jordyn Bontrager of Lake Show Life proposed an interesting trade between the Lakers and Bulls that doesn’t involve LaVine but could address a couple of the Lakers’ needs.

Bulls receive: Rui Hachimura, Jalen Hood-Schifino, 2029 first-round draft pick

Lakers receive: Alex Caruso, Patrick Williams

Jalen Hood-Schifino may be nearing a return for the Lakers

Lakers rookie guard Jalen Hood-Schifino has been cleared to start working toward a return to game action after suffering a knee contusion.

One of the reasons the Los Angeles Lakers hold a mediocre 6-6 record more than three weeks into the 2023-24 season is injuries. They have been without LeBron James, Anthony Davis, Gabe Vincent, Jarred Vanderbilt, Taurean Prince, Jaxson Hayes and Rui Hachimura at various times already, and they have clearly missed each player during their absences.

Another man who has been out is rookie guard Jalen Hood-Schifino. The No. 17 pick in June’s draft has yet to play this regular season because of a right patella contusion. Some fans have been intrigued by his potential and have wanted to see him on the court.

The good news is he is on the mend: He was seen going through full-court basketball drills on Tuesday.

Per Mike Trudell, he has started a “return-to-play progression.”

Once the former Indiana University standout is cleared to play, he likely will not see much playing time, but spot duty during garbage time or a stint in the G League will do him plenty of good.

Los Angeles Lakers rookie Jalen Hood-Schifino is recovering from a right patella contusion and has started a return to play progression, the team announced on Thursday.

Hood-Schifino did not play in the Lakers’ last two preseason games due to the injury and has missed the first 12 games of the regular season. Lakers coach Darvin Ham said on Nov. 4 that Hood-Schifino was still a “few weeks” away from returning.

The 17th pick has been spotted participating in various on-court drills and other related exercises. The team is ramping up his rehab and monitoring how his knee responds to the workouts.

Lakers’ Darvin Ham provides injury update on rookie Jalen Hood-Schifino

Lakers coach Darvin Ham said Jalen Hood-Schifino is expected to miss additional time after dealing with a right patella contusion.

Los Angeles Lakers coach Darvin Ham on Monday said rookie Jalen Hood-Schifino is expected to miss additional time while dealing with a right patella contusion.

The Lakers announced on Oct. 23 that Hood-Schifino would miss at least 10 days with the injury. Ham said over the weekend that Hood-Schifino is still a “few weeks” away from returning and reiterated that update before facing the Miami Heat on the road.

“He and (Jarred Vanderbilt) have been out the longest, and they’re pretty much status quo,” Ham said, via Khobi Price of the Southern California News Group.

Hood-Schifino did not play in the Lakers’ last two preseason games due to the injury and has missed the first seven games of the regular season. The team has also dealt with injuries to Rui Hachimura (concussion), Jaxson Hayes (ankle) and Gabe Vincent (knee).

The 17th pick averaged 3.5 points, four assists and 3.8 rebounds in four appearances this preseason. He had his most productive game on Oct. 7 versus Golden State with seven points, six rebounds, two assists and one blocked shot.

Lakers will be without at least three rotation players versus the Magic

The Lakers will be shorthanded when they start a four-game road trip on Saturday.

The Los Angeles Lakers, coming off a thrilling overtime win on Wednesday over the Los Angeles Clippers, will start a four-game road trip on Saturday.

That trip begins with a contest against the Orlando Magic, a team they defeated on Monday, albeit in ugly fashion.

Los Angeles hasn’t been at full strength this season. Forward and defensive ace Jarred Vanderbilt has been out due to left heel bursitis. Rui Hachimura has been out for the last two games, while Gabe Vincent and Taurean Prince missed Wednesday’s game.

Vanderbilt, Hachimura and Vincent will be out on Saturday, and Prince is listed as questionable.

The injuries have left the Lakers short-handed at the wing position and in the backcourt. The fact rookie guard Jalen Hood-Schifino has also been out lately with a right patella contusion has made that lack of depth even more painful.

Vincent is expected to miss at least two weeks, while Vanderbilt will be re-evaluated in about a week.

Lakers’ Jalen Hood-Schifino to miss 10 days with knee injury

Hood-Schifino is slated to miss the first five games of the regular season due to a knee injury.

Los Angeles Lakers rookie Jalen Hood-Schifino will miss the next 10 days due to a right patella contusion, according to Khobi Price of the Southern California News Group.

Hood-Schifino did not play in the Lakers’ last two preseason games due to the injury. He is slated to miss the first five games of the regular season after the team said he will be reevaluated on Nov. 3. The Lakers will also be without Jarred Vanderbilt (heel) to start the season.

The 17th pick averaged 3.5 points, four assists and 3.8 rebounds in four appearances this preseason. He had his most productive game on Oct. 7 versus Golden State with seven points, six rebounds, two assists and one blocked shot.

Hood-Schifino isn’t expected to play a large role to begin the season, but the 20-year-old has impressed the team during training camp and the preseason. He projects to be largely in a developmental role this season as one of the youngest players on the roster.
