Quotes: MSU football RB coach Effrem Reed speaks to media

RB coach Effrem Reed spoke to the media on Monday:

Fall camp is moving along for Michigan State football, with a lot of questions for the Spartans coaching staff to answer. Notably, one of the biggest questions is how the running back situation will play out.

The Spartans have several suitors vying for touches in the running back room, including UConn transfer Nate Carter, USF transfer Jaren Mangham and veterans Jalen Berger and Jordon Simmons.

MSU’s running backs coach Effrem Reed followed OC Jay Johnson to the podium on Monday, specifically discussing the running backs room.

Former Badger running back picks new school

After three seasons with Wisconsin Football, running back Julius Davis entered the transfer portal and he announced his new school Saturday.

After three seasons with Wisconsin football, running back Julius Davis entered the transfer portal and he announced his new school Saturday night. The Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin native has transferred to Montana State.

Davis was a three-star recruit coming out of high school, joining the Badgers as a member one of their class of 2019 recruits. He arrived one year ahead of four-star ball carrier Jalen Berger, though neither of them got much action behind superstar Jonathan Taylor in the backfield.

Over the three seasons that Davis spent with Wisconsin, he logged a total of 35 carries for 200 yards over eight games. The limited playing time can certainly be attributed to the emergence of Braelon Allen as well as injuries.

Now with Montana State, the 5-foot-11 athlete should be able to get more run and regardless of his production, he’ll always be a Badger!

Where Wisconsin football transfers will call home this upcoming season

Here are where each of the Wisconsin football transfers will be playing next season:

College athletics have changed forever with the implementation of the transfer portal and their ability to change schools one time without having to sit out a season.

All schools have fallen victim to offseason transfer portal attrition, and the University of Wisconsin is no different. Players leave a program for a multitude of reasons, whether that be in search of more playing time or simply to get closer to home.

Thankfully for UW, they’ve largely been able to keep their core pieces intact, while using their available scholarships to pursue immediate impact players to plug holes on the roster.

However, Wisconsin saw several players enter the transfer portal in hopes of finding a new home they deemed to be a better fit.

Here, in no particular order, are where Wisconsin football transfers will call home this upcoming season:

Ranking the Big Ten’s running backs heading into the 2022 season

We ranked every running back committee in the Big Ten heading out of the spring

If there is one thing the Big Ten is known for, it’s running backs. And there is no shortage of excellent rushers around the conference heading into the 2022 season, even with someone like Michigan State football’s Kenneth Walker III heading to the NFL.

Below, we ranked every rushing attack in the Big Ten from worst to first, and looked at two running backs from each team due to the committee approach in today’s game.

Every early enrollee for Michigan State football heading into spring ball

Who is early enrolling at MSU? Find out here:

Spring ball is vastly approaching East Lansing. The importance of spring football is significant, as it will lay the groundwork for the program heading into the summer as well as training camp.

Another key piece of spring ball is getting every new player acclimated to their new school. The importance of this has been amplified by the transfer portal and the immediate impact transfers can make on a program.

Also, if true freshmen want to get on the field, early enrolling and playing spring ball is a major step towards achieving that goal.

Let’s take a look at the 14 players, transfers and freshmen, that are early enrolling at MSU:

Check out how the transfer portal is shaking out for MSU in 2022

As many know, the transfer portal is set to be a huge part of Mel Tucker’s tenure at Michigan State. The new era of college football is centered around the use of the transfer portal. Tucker used the portal to flip a roster from a 2-5 season in his first year to an 11-2 season in year two, mainly in part to the additions through the transfer portal.

The transfer portal should be viewed as another form of recruiting, as a team will have two ‘recruiting classes’ per year, the traditional high school class and a transfer class.

Transfers do work both ways, while the team will add multiple players through the portal, losing players to the portal will also become a reality every season.

Take a look at how Michigan State’s 2022 transfer portal, both incoming and outgoing, looks like:

Former Wisconsin RB Jalen Berger transfers to a Big Ten school

The former Badger is staying in the Big Ten conference

After being dismissed from the Wisconsin football team in October, running back Jalen Berger announced his transfer decision on Monday afternoon.

The New Jersey native is staying in the Big Ten. Berger is heading to Michigan State to join forces with former Wisconsin director of player personnel Saeed Kahlif, who holds the same role at Michigan State.

Spartan head coach Mel Tucker lands a player who was a four-star recruit in the class of 2020. As a freshman in Madison, Berger averaged 5 yards per carry, totaling 300 yards on 60 carries. He also added a pair of touchdowns on the ground. His 2021 redshirt freshman season saw a decline in playing time with the arrival of Clemson transfer Chez Mellusi. Berger played in three games, amassing 24 carries for 88 yards (3.7 yards per carry).

Next season, Berger will see the Badgers in East Lansing when Wisconsin travels to Michigan State on October 8, 2022.

Michigan State football lands Wisconsin transfer RB Jalen Berger

Michigan State football and Wisconsin essentially made a trade this year via the NCAA transfer portal. Wisconsin picked up former Spartan corner Kalon Gervin during the season, and on Monday, the Spartans landed former Wisconsin running back Jalen Berger via the same means.

Berger was a 4-star running back in the 2020 recruiting class, ranked the No. 15 best running back in his class and the No. 136 ranked player overall by 247Sports.

He entered the transfer portal back on October 13.

Berger could be the next transfer star for the Spartans, following the success of Kenneth Walker III.

Jalen Berger, who seriously considered Rutgers, is on an official visit to Michigan State

Jalen Berger is visiting Michigan State this weekend, the former four-star running back and No. 2 player in the state of New Jersey in the 2020 recruiting cycle is taking full advantage of the transfer portal to check out a Big Ten rival of Wisconsin.

Last month, Berger entered the transfer portal cutting short his sophomore season at Wisconsin. His fall from grace was surprising given his solid numbers last year as a true freshman he had 301 rushing yards on 60 carries for two touchdowns.

This is the first known visit for Berger since he was dismissed from Wisconsin in mid-October.

Two years ago, Berger committed to Wisconsin after narrowing his choice down to include Rutgers as a finalist. The Scarlet Knights had just hired Greg Schiano as head coach and Berger became the top priority of his recruiting efforts.

Berger seriously considered Rutgers at the time of his commitment.

It will be interesting to see should Berger pick Michigan State what the impact is on the Spartans depth chart. Kenneth Walker III is almost certainly headed to the NFL draft next spring and Berger is likely being recruited as the successor to the star running back.

It would be quite the reload for Michigan State head coach Mel Tucker if he were to have the talented Berger in the pipeline to replace Walker, who is being talked about with serious Heisman buzz.

Destinations that make sense for former Wisconsin RB Jalen Berger

Destinations that make sense for former Wisconsin RB Jalen Berger

Former Wisconsin running back Jalen Berger has officially entered the NCAA transfer portal after being dismissed from the Wisconsin program earlier this week.

The former four-star recruit is now in search of a new location to play out the final years of his eligibility. It’s likely he’ll be a highly-touted player in the portal, as it isn’t often someone with his talent, proven production and recruiting profile becomes available.

Berger’s transfer portal process has just begun, so there isn’t much out there about schools reaching out or any favorites to land a commitment.

But there are two schools that make a lot of sense. Here are those two programs and why they should already have a leg-up on the competition:
