Michigan State football: Where every coach on the old staff is employed now

Tracking where MSU’s former coaching staff has landed:

Michigan State went under a major overhaul, obviously, when they hired Jonathan Smith to take over the Spartan football program. With the new changes to the Spartan football program, came a full overhaul within the MSU coaching staff.

While we know what the new staff looks like, it is time to look at the old staff, and where members of the old staff ended up in their new coaching positions.

Former MSU football RB coach Effrem Reed hired by South Alabama

Former MSU RB coach Effrem Reed has a new job:

Effrem Reed was one of the bright spots on Michigan State’s offensive coaching staff over the past few seasons. Reed is attributed with playing a major role in Kenneth Walker’s development and arrival in East Lansing. Further, Reed had played a strong role in bringing Jalen Berger, Nate Carter and Jaren Mangham to campus.

With the change in coaching staff in East Lansing, it was time for MSU and Reed to separate. Now, Reed has found a new job.

Reed has been hired by South Alabama as the team’s running backs coach under new head coach Major Applewhite.

Quotes: MSU football RB coach Effrem Reed speaks to media

RB coach Effrem Reed spoke to the media on Monday:

Fall camp is moving along for Michigan State football, with a lot of questions for the Spartans coaching staff to answer. Notably, one of the biggest questions is how the running back situation will play out.

The Spartans have several suitors vying for touches in the running back room, including UConn transfer Nate Carter, USF transfer Jaren Mangham and veterans Jalen Berger and Jordon Simmons.

MSU’s running backs coach Effrem Reed followed OC Jay Johnson to the podium on Monday, specifically discussing the running backs room.

Resetting Michigan State football’s RB recruiting board

Check out what Michigan State’s running back board might look like as the early signing period approaches:

Michigan State lost a huge commitment in the form of Kedrick Reescano yesterday. The longtime 4-star commit was a focal point of the class, and now the Spartan coaching staff will be forced to replace him.

There are still a lot of viable options for the Spartans to consider and running backs coach Effrem Reed will look to secure some of those options before the December early signing period.

Michigan State will look to take two running backs in this class, so expect a lot of heat to be turned up on this list:

Best quotes from new Michigan State football RB’s coach Effrem Reed before spring game

Michigan State’s new running backs coach spoke to the media before MSU’s spring game. You can find the best quotes from that presser here

Michigan State football has a new running backs coach in the building after William Peagler was poached from the Spartans by Florida. Effrem Reed will have a huge task on his hands as he will be asked to replace the production of Kenneth Walker III, one of the greatest college football running backs in recent history (or maybe just history, period, if we want to start some hot takes).

On Thursday, Reed spoke to the media about his new role as MSU marches towards their spring game on Saturday. We compiled the best quotes from Reed below.

Michigan State football releases assistant coach salaries

MSU assistant coaches have gotten raises for the 2022 season

The start of football in 2022 is soon upon us as the Spartans are set to kick off spring ball in just a few short weeks. With spring ball starting, the coaching carousel is officially dying down and coaching staffs are being completely solidified across the country.

It appears that Mel Tucker has locked in his staff for the 2022 football season and the Spartans are ready to roll into spring football.

With Tucker’s new contract came an increase in the money available to pay assistant coaches, which Tucker used to increase the salaries of his assistant coaches, and fill the open positions left on his staff.

What led RB Jarek Broussard to Michigan State football

Relationships and Spartan Nation helped bring Colorado RB transfer Jarek Broussard to Michigan State

Michigan State’s offensive coaching staff gained a commitment from a game-changing running back Jarek Broussard, a transfer from Colorado. Broussard possesses a unique skillset, a shifty speed back that can make people miss and can change the pace of a game, something that will pair perfectly with the downhill power runners MSU already has in Jalen Berger and Eli Collins.

Broussard committed to Michigan State after taking an official visit over the weekend, a visit in which the transfer was blown away by the campus, the coaches and Spartan Nation.

Broussard got his first taste of Spartan Nation alongside the rivalry with the University of Michigan, and he is definitely embracing both.

“The thing that stood out most on my visit was the basketball game vs the school from up the road, the atmosphere was through the roof and it gave me a glimpse of gameday on Saturday. Spartan Nation is serious,” Broussard explained.

It usually takes time to digest a visit and make a decision on whether or not someone wants to commit or not, but Broussard knew he wanted to make the move to be a part of Spartan nation after his visit.

MSU is like a big family and I’m big on family also when Coach Johnson showed me the practice film from 2019. It brought back memories but It also made me feel like it was meant to be. Almost a full-circle moment.”

There was a period of time that many in the industry thought Oregon was the leader for Broussard, but that didn’t stop MSU’s hot pursuit, eventually setting the Spartans apart from the rest.

What set MSU apart the most was culture. Being on campus and meeting with people made me realize how rich the history was.,” Broussard explained. “To actually have players who played and had an impact on past teams that were really good was great to see (Darien Harris). The whole weekend was great and I want to thank the entire recruiting team. They made me feel like it was home already.”

Effrem Reed was promoted to take over MSU’s vacant RB coach position, his first job in the role. Reed has been on a roll on the recruiting trail and has a lot of people excited about what he can do coaching the position.

Coach Effrem is great and he’s young. It’s always great to see young guys get a shot. He’s originally from Louisiana too so all good vibes. Everything was genuine,” Broussard said.

Ultimately, Broussard will be donning the green and white this upcoming fall and will be a focal point of the offense and in the efforts to replace Kenneth Walker. But what is Broussard most excited about in becoming a Spartan?

The thing I’m looking forward to most is Saturdays. I can’t wait to play in front of Spartan Nation and build bonds with my teammates,” Broussard said.

Michigan State football hires new offensive analyst/assistant RBs coach

MSU has hired a new offensive analyst/assistant RB coach

Michigan State head coach Mel Tucker has filled a void within his coaching staff. Blaine Gautier has been hired as Michigan State’s new offensive analyst and assistant running backs coach, a void left by Effrem Reed’s promotion to RBs coach from this role.

Gautier spent his college career as a quarterback at Louisiana from 2008-2012 playing alongside Effrem Reed under offensive coordinator Jay Johnson. Gautier has a lot of connections with the Michigan State staff.

After his collegiate playing career, Gautier got into the coaching ranks working as an offensive analyst at LSU and then taking a job as a WR coach at McNeese State before coming to East Lansing.

Gautier should give the Spartans a recruiting boost in Louisiana while having strong comradery with the offensive coaching staff at Michigan State.

Michigan State football lands commitment from 4-star Texas running back

Michigan State has gained a commitment from a 4-star Texas running back, the second 4-star to start the 2023 recruiting class!

Michigan State has added to its 2023 recruiting class, landing a commitment from 4-star Texas running back Kedrick Reescano. Reescano and Michigan State have been trending upwards for some time now, but after visiting this past weekend on MSU’s ‘Dawg Day’ event, it was enough for Reescano to make a commitment to Michigan State.

Reescano is a native of New Caney, Texas, just outside of Houston. He is currently ranked as a 4-star prospect and the No. 219 overall recruit, as well as the No. 13 running back recruit in the country according to the 247Sports composite rankings.

Reescano stands at 6-foot tall and weighing 195 pounds. In his sophomore and junior seasons at New Caney High School, Reescano ran for a combined 2,700 yards on 369 attempts while catching 24 passes for 357 and a combined 40 touchdowns.

Former MSU RB coach William Peagler started the pursuit for the Spartans, building a strong relationship with the Texas running back, and after Peagler’s departure, new RB coach Effrem Reed continued the strong pursuit, closing the deal.

The Spartans beat out the hometown Houston Cougars and Oklahoma State Cowboys for the running back’s commitment.

Reescano joins 4-star TE Brennan Parachek in Michigan State’s 2023 recruiting class.

Effrem Reed officially named Michigan State football’s new RB coach

Effrem Reed is officially MSU’s new RB coach!

News that MSU fans have known for weeks, but it is now official, Michigan State has named Effrem Reed their new running backs coach. Reed worked as a part of Michigan State’s staff as an offensive analyst and assistant running backs coach to Will Peagler, who left to take the TE coaching job at Florida, but had left to take the RB coach job at Georgia Southern under new coach Clay Helton and just two weeks later, he got the call to come back to East Lansing, an opportunity he jumped on.

Prior to coming to East Lansing in an analyst role, Reed spent two seasons in a graduate assistant role at his alma mater, Louisianna, where he was a standout running back himself.

Mel Tucker took to Twitter to give his support and admiration about the promotion he gave coach Reed:

Reed is quickly getting busy on the recruiting trail and preparing his new starting running back for the 2022 season.
