Michigan State football 2022 transfer tracker

Check out how the transfer portal is shaking out for MSU in 2022

As many know, the transfer portal is set to be a huge part of Mel Tucker’s tenure at Michigan State. The new era of college football is centered around the use of the transfer portal. Tucker used the portal to flip a roster from a 2-5 season in his first year to an 11-2 season in year two, mainly in part to the additions through the transfer portal.

The transfer portal should be viewed as another form of recruiting, as a team will have two ‘recruiting classes’ per year, the traditional high school class and a transfer class.

Transfers do work both ways, while the team will add multiple players through the portal, losing players to the portal will also become a reality every season.

Take a look at how Michigan State’s 2022 transfer portal, both incoming and outgoing, looks like:

Former Michigan State football DL Tyson Watson commits to UMass

Tyson Watson is heading to UMass

Michigan State has seen their fair share of players hit the transfer portal, much like the rest of the country, and defensive lineman Tyson Watson was one of them. Watson was a 3-star prospect and a member of the 2021 recruiting class, Mel Tucker’s first at Michigan State. After his true freshman season, Watson made the decision to enter the transfer portal.

Watson has made the decision to transfer to the University of Massachusetts. Watson will be playing under new UMass head coach Don Brown, who Spartan fans know very well from his time as the University of Michigan’s defensive coordinator.

Watson, a Warren, Michigan native, will surely have some familiarity with Brown and his staff, making this a good landing spot for the former Spartan.

Michigan State football is losing another player to the NCAA transfer portal. On Christmas Eve, Watson announced his decision to enter the portal after just one season with the Spartans.

Watson was part of the 2021 class, which was a notoriously hard class to recruit and scout in because of COVID restrictions so it’s not surprising to see a few players go and look for better fits elsewhere.

3-star Michigan State Football commit DE Tyson Watson officially shuts down recruitment

The 3-star defensive end officially shutdown his recruitment on Monday.

Michigan State Football has had some unfortunate luck over the 2021 recruitment period with players de-committing. Tight end Jake Renda and defensive back Gabe “Spida” Nealy both rescinded their commitments to join other programs, so, when a player who has committed to the Spartans officially shuts down their commitment, it now comes with a sigh of relief.

The latest player to officially close their recruitment was 3-star defensive end Tyson Watson out of Waterford Mott.

Watson announced his recruitment shutdown on Twitter, which you can see below:

Tracking every Michigan State Football commit for the 2021 recruiting class

In this post we will track every commitment for the Michigan State Football 2021 recruiting class.

The 2021 recruiting class presents an interesting challenge for Mel Tucker and the Michigan State Football team. Tucker was already behind the eight-ball from day one, taking over for Mark Dantonio and having to build out a staff while other teams were already knee-deep in their recruiting processes. Then, this little thing called the COVID-19 Coronavirus broke out in the United States, putting an end to any opportunities for in-person recruiting. Tucker has still managed to be extremely active on the recruiting front. We will be tracking every new recruit for the 2021 class in this post.

One thing that is very clear about this class is that Mel Tucker is looking for size and athleticism. Ethan Boyd is 6’7″, Tyson Watson is 6’6″, and Harmon and Nealy are both 6’4″. At 6’4″, Nealy will be one of the tallest defensive backs in the country and that length should be very interesting to watch in coverage.

Warren Mott defensive end Tyson Watson commits to Michigan State

Watson is the fifth recruit of Mel Tucker’s inaugural class

#21BuiltStrong has added another big body on the defensive line.

A couple days after Detroit Loyola defensive tackle Derrick Harmon became Mel Tucker’s fourth recruit of the 2021 class, the Spartans added their fifth guy in Warren Mott defensive end Tyson Watson. Watson announced his decision during a sit-down on Rivals.com

Watson, listed at 6-foot-6 and 270 pounds, is a three-star prospect on the 247Sports composite rankings. He is ranked as the No. 562 prospect in the 2021 class and the 16th-best player in the state of Michigan.

Watson chose MSU over a group of finalists that include Tennessee, Indiana, Iowa State, and Toledo. He totaled up 20 offers, a number of which came from power five schools.

3-star DE/OT Tyson Watson puts Michigan State in his top-5 schools

Michigan State Football already secured the commitment of one 3-star player out of Waterford Mott in 2020 athlete Kobe Myers. It looks like they also have a solid chance at securing the commitment of another Waterford Mott product in 3-star 2021 lineman Tyson Watson. On Wednesday, Watson included MSU in his top-5 final choices for his recruitment process.

Watson lists himself on Twitter as both an offensive tackle and a defensive end. 247sports has him evaluated as a strongside defensive end and has him listed as the No. 39 ranked player for that position in the 2021 class.

Here is Watson’s announcement, also noting that he will announce his final decision on April 17 at 3pm ET.

For what it’s worth, Allen Trieu of 247sports has Watson as a lock to go to Michigan State in their Crystal Ball Predictions.
