Detroit Lions unrestricted free agents now that the 2023 season is completed

With the 2024 offseason looming, here is the master list of the Detroit Lions unrestricted free agents

The Detroit Lions had an impressive season, coming within one game of a Super Bowl berth despite their loss to the San Francisco 49ers. Looking ahead, the future seems promising for the Lions.

GM Brad Holmes and Coach Dan Campbell are likely already diligently evaluating the roster, identifying areas for improvement to overcome the challenges. From a personal perspective, they should have the trust of the fanbase to execute the necessary moves. As they enter the offseason, the Lions possess $58.6 million in cap space, ranking sixth in the NFL according to Over the Cap. This substantial amount will likely be essential to bolster the roster, especially with only 38 players currently under contract for the upcoming season.

Certain players demonstrated their value this season, earning a return to the roster, while others failed to meet expectations. The decisions on who to retain and who to release will be intriguing. Here’s the comprehensive list of the Lions’ unrestricted free agents.

Lions officially sign Jake McQuaide, add Bruce Irvin to practice squad

McQuaide becomes the oldest player on the Lions roster

A couple of Detroit Lions roster moves that were widely anticipated became official on Wednesday. The Lions signed long snapper Jake McQuaide from the practice squad to the active roster. Detroit also added veteran EDGE Bruce Irvin to the practice squad to fill the spot opened by McQuaide’s promotion.

McQuaide played in the Week 10 win over the Chargers as a practice squad elevation. Regular long snapper Scott Daly went on injured reserve after Week 8. McQuaide, 35, is now the oldest player on the Lions roster. He’s in his 13th NFL season, the first 10 of which were with the Los Angeles Rams.

Irvin is technically older than McQuaide at 36, but the practice squad doesn’t count in the official tally. His addition was known on Tuesday after working out for the Lions, but did not become official until Wednesday’s practice.

The Detroit Lions didn’t need to do much roster tinkering on the day before the team’s trip to Los Angeles to face the Chargers. With a relatively healthy roster coming out of the bye week, the Lions only needed one minor tweak before heading on west in Week 10.

It’s an important one, however. With regular long snapper Scott Daly now on injured reserve, the Lions needed some to handle snapping duties. As expected, the Lions promoted Jake McQuaide from the practice squad to the active roster.

McQuaide was signed to the practice squad over the bye. He was in training camp with Detroit, and the 35-year-old has over a decade of NFL experience.

There aren’t any late injury status changes this week.

Faced with an injury to their starters, the Lions went out and found a familiar face as the new long snapper.

Jake McQuaide is back in Detroit, signing with the Lions practice squad on Wednesday. McQuaide spent the offseason and training camp with the Lions before being cut during the preseason. He’s been in the NFL since 2011, with most of that time playing for the Los Angeles Rams before spending two years with the Dallas Cowboys.

McQuaide was needed because starting long snapper Scott Daly is out for the year with an injury suffered in Monday night’s win over the Raiders. Daly has yet to be placed on injured reserve during the first days of the Lions’ bye week.

Lions lose long snapper to injury vs. Raiders

Not often is an injury to a long snapper significant but in the case of of Scott Daly his absence will be felt

Not often is an injury to a long snapper significant, but in the case of Scott Daly his absence will be felt.

Late in the win against the Raiders on Monday night, Daly was injured on a field goal attempt. Daly suffered a knee injury and was able to limp off the field upon further examination it was shown that he will be out for some time.

Dan Campbell told the Detroit News that if they needed a replacement in the game, they didn’t having not attempted another kick, that Aidan Hutchinson and Alex Anzalone would have served in the role. The team is entering a bye week so they have time to find a replacement but it seems practice squad member Jake McQuaide is going to be it.

The former two-time Pro Bowl long snapper entered the NFL in 2011 and quickly earned a reliable role on the St. Louis Rams roster. McQuaide played his college football at Ohio State so he should be familiar with Big Ten fans.

The Lions as mentioned are on a bye in week nine and will return against the Chargers on November 12.

Cardinals had veteran long snapper in for tryout

35-year-old long snapper Jake McQuaide had a tryout for the Cardinals on Thursday.

The Arizona Cardinals re-signed veteran long snapper Aaron Brewer this offseason. He is the team’s long snapper for the eight year in a row.

There might be an injury concern with Brewer.

They had two other different long snappers on the roster during the offseason and now they have brought in another for a workout.

According to the NFL transaction report on Thursday, they had Jake McQuaide in for a tryout.

McQuaide has played 12 years in the NFL and is a two-time Pro Bowler.

He spent a decade with the Rams in St. Louis and Los Angeles and then was with the Dallas Cowboys the last two seasons.

McQuaide, 35 years old, was with the Detroit Lions in the preseason.

He had never missed an NFL game before last season but played in only four last season before landing on injured reserve.

Had the tryout been a young long snapper, perhaps it would be simply looking ahead to the future.

McQuaide is two years older than Brewer.

Brewer was not on the injury report on Wednesday or Thursday, but this is something to watch.

Why the Broncos worked out a punter instead of a kicker

Wil Lutz missed two kicks in Week 1, but the Broncos brought in a punter for a workout, not a kicker. Here’s why.

When news broke that the Denver Broncos brought in a specialist for a workout on Wednesday, some fans were surprised to learn that the team hosted a punter, not a kicker.

Broncos kicker Wil Lutz missed two kicks in the team’s season opener, so fans thought competition might be on the way. Denver coach Sean Payton has backed Lutz to bounce back, though, and Payton is not going to undermine the kicker’s confidence — at least not at the moment.

The Broncos are also content with punter Riley Dixon, but he is a right-footed punter and Denver is set to face a left-footed Tress Way when they host the Washington Commanders on Sunday.

Payton likely wanted to give Denver’s punt returners — Marvin Mims and Tremon Smith — reps fielding left-footed punts in practice this week ahead of Sunday’s game against Way.

So the Broncos brought in former XFL punter Brock Miller, a lefty, for a workout. Denver also hosted veteran long snapper Jake McQuaide, according to the NFL’s transaction wire.

If Lutz continues to struggle, the Broncos might bring in kickers down the road. For now, though, it seems that Denver just wanted to get practice reps with a left-footed punter, and they brought in a long snapper to workout with him on Wednesday.

Lions sign OT Bobby Hart, release LS Jake McQuaide

Lions sign veteran OT Bobby Hart, release LS Jake McQuaide

The Detroit Lions had the day off on Monday, but the team was still busy. The Lions have signed veteran offensive tackle Bobby Hart to the 90-man roster.

Hart, who turns 29 later this month, is entering his ninth NFL season. He spent most of 2022 with the Buffalo Bills as their top swing tackle. Hart has over 50 games of starting experience across time with the Giants, Bengals, Titans and Bills.

To make room for Hart, the Lions released long snapper Jake McQuaide. That means the battle for long snapper is over and Scott Daly will hold the gig for another season.

4 Lions vets who might not make the team in 2023

4 Lions vets who are in real peril of not making the Detroit roster in 2023

There is a flip side of the coin to the excitement of all the offseason additions in Detroit. Some Lions players who had roles in the past are going to lose their spots because of the influx of new talent.

It’s the life cycle in the NFL. New players come in and replace older ones that are no longer good enough for their roles. For the Detroit Lions in 2023, it means a few guys need to perform better than they have recently to hold onto roster spots.

Lions reveal free agent jersey numbers and veteran number changes

A bunch of Lions players changed their numbers now that different jerseys were available

When the Detroit Lions take to the field for the first mandatory minicamp in a few weeks, we’ll get a chance to see the free agents signed this offseason in their new jerseys for the first time. Now we know which number each of the new Lions will be sporting in 2023, at least to start the offseason.

The Lions revealed the jersey number choices of the free agent class of 2023. It was included in the same social media postings as the rookie jersey number assignments.

For the first time in the modern era, a Lions player will don No. 0. That honor goes to veteran wideout Marvin Jones, who returned in free agency after two seasons in Jacksonville.

The liberation of number assignments allows several new defensive backs to rock single-digit jerseys. Cam Sutton will wear No. 1, with C.J. Gardner-Johnson going for No. 2 and Emmanuel Moseley choosing the No 4 jersey. Running back David Montgomery will go with No. 5.

In addition to the new free agents, several holdover Lions pulled off some jersey number changes, too. Most notable among these are DB Ifeatu Melifonwu moving to No. 6 from 26 and running back Craig Reynolds choosing No. 13 after being No. 46.

That 24 belongs to cornerback Jarren Williams, not to be confused with wideout Jameson Williams, who appears to be keeping his No. 9.
