Why the Broncos worked out a punter instead of a kicker

Wil Lutz missed two kicks in Week 1, but the Broncos brought in a punter for a workout, not a kicker. Here’s why.

When news broke that the Denver Broncos brought in a specialist for a workout on Wednesday, some fans were surprised to learn that the team hosted a punter, not a kicker.

Broncos kicker Wil Lutz missed two kicks in the team’s season opener, so fans thought competition might be on the way. Denver coach Sean Payton has backed Lutz to bounce back, though, and Payton is not going to undermine the kicker’s confidence — at least not at the moment.

The Broncos are also content with punter Riley Dixon, but he is a right-footed punter and Denver is set to face a left-footed Tress Way when they host the Washington Commanders on Sunday.

Payton likely wanted to give Denver’s punt returners — Marvin Mims and Tremon Smith — reps fielding left-footed punts in practice this week ahead of Sunday’s game against Way.

So the Broncos brought in former XFL punter Brock Miller, a lefty, for a workout. Denver also hosted veteran long snapper Jake McQuaide, according to the NFL’s transaction wire.

If Lutz continues to struggle, the Broncos might bring in kickers down the road. For now, though, it seems that Denver just wanted to get practice reps with a left-footed punter, and they brought in a long snapper to workout with him on Wednesday.

Rams add punter Brock Miller to practice squad

The Rams officially added veteran punter Brock Miller to their practice squad ahead of Sunday’s matchup with the Chargers.

The Los Angeles Rams are set at punter with Riley Dixon, but they are adding another punter to their practice squad. Ahead of Sunday’s matchup with the Los Angeles Chargers, the Rams have added veteran Brock Miller to their practice squad.

Miller was an undrafted free agent out of Southern Utah in the 2014 NFL draft. The veteran punter has spent time with the Rams, the San Francisco 49ers, and the New York Giants, along with a stint in the USFL with the New Jersey Generals.

Despite being in the NFL since 2014, Miller has yet to record a single punt in his career. Considering that Dixon has been solid for the Rams this season, Miller likely won’t see much action unless an injury occurs.

Eagles to sign punter Brett Kern to replace injured Arryn Siposs

With Arryn Siposs out indefinitely with a lower leg injury, the Philadelphia Eagles are signing veteran punter and former Pro Bowl Brett Kern

The Eagles suffered a critical injury at the punter position and the team already has a replacement at the NovaCare Complex on a visit.

After Arryn Siposs was ruled out indefinitely with a lower leg injury, the team signed former Pro Bowl punter, Brett Kern.

Formerly with the Titans, Kern lost a preseason battle with rookie Ryan Stonehouse, leading to his release.

Kern spent 13 seasons with Tennessee, appearing in 197 games and setting several franchise records in career punts (923), gross punting average (45.9 yards), net punting average (40.8 yards), and punts downed inside the 20 (373).

5 punters the Eagles could target after Arryn Siposs suffered leg injury against Giants

We’re looking at five punters that the Philadelphia Eagles could have an interest in adding to the roster after Arryn Siposs suffered a lower leg injury against the Giants

The Eagles don’t have many weaknesses, but Punter Arryn Siposs has been a player to watch all season, and things could be heating up.

Siposs suffered a lower leg injury after trying to advance a blocked punt on Sunday and he’ll be out for an indefinite amount of time.

Here are five punters Philadelphia could have in for a tryout ahead of Sunday’s matchup at Chicago.

Eagles had free agent punter Brock Miller in for a work out

In what seems like a yearly event, the Philadelphia Eagles worked out free agent punter Brock Miller in advance of Monday’s matchup against the Washington Commanders

The Eagles don’t have many weaknesses, but Punter Arryn Siposs has been a player to watch all season, and things could be heating up.

For the second time in less than a year, Philadelphia had free-agent punter Brock Miller in for a workout.

It’s an annual event, and the second time the Eagles had Miller in before playing Washington.

Entering the league as an undrafted free agent in 2014, Miller has yet to see game action while bouncing around the league from the practice squad to the practice squad.

Miller signed a futures contract with the San Francisco 49ers in January 2017 but was cut later that offseason in May.

He’s also spent four different occasions on the Giants’ practice squad and most recently signed with the Los Angeles Rams during the 2019 preseason.

Vikings worked out USFL veteran punter on Thursday

The Vikings seemed to be using strategy with their latest tryout

The Minnesota Vikings held a surprising tryout on Thursday afternoon by hosting punter Brock Miller per Pro Football Network’s Aaron Wilson.

Miller is a 31-year-old punter that has only been on an NFL roster for three months when he was with the San Francisco 49ers during the 2017 offseason.

He did punt for the New Jersey Generals this past spring in the USFL and was successful. He averaged 46.3 yards per punt on 31 punts with 10 of them being pinned inside the 20-yard line.

Rookie punter Ryan Wright has had a successful season through seven games which raises the question why the Vikings would host a punter tryout. Well, the answer is simple. Miller is a left footed punter, and the Vikings will be facing one in Tress Way in Washington.

This is a smart strategy by the Vikings, as the ball spins differently with a left-footed punter. With Jalen Reagor’s issues in fielding punts, this was a wise move.

Eagles worked out free agent punter Brock Miller

Philadelphia #Eagles worked out free agent punter Brock Miller on Friday in advance of Sunday’s matchup against the #WashingtonFootball Team

With the NFL engulfed in a COVID-19 rise among players, the Eagles took some precautions on Friday,  holding another workout for free agent punter Brock Miller per the league’s transaction wire.

Arryn Siposs is one of the NFL’s top young punters and doesn’t appear set to miss any game action, but Philadelphia appears to be taking cautious steps.

Colts worked out P Brock Miller

Colts worked out a punter on Thursday.

The Indianapolis Colts held a workout for punter Brock Miller on Thursday, per the league’s transaction wire.

Though a bit random, it doesn’t appear that the Colts are in need of making a move at punter. Rigoberto Sanchez has been playing well to open the season so it may just be that Chris Ballard is keeping an eye on the market.

A lefty punter, Miller has bounced around the league’s practice squads since entering the NFL as an undrafted free agent out of Southern Utah in 2014. He signed a futures contract with the San Francisco 49ers in January 2017 but was cut later that offseason in May.

He also spent some time on the New York Giants practice squad in December 2018 but was cut in January 2019. Miller, 30, signed with the Los Angeles Rams during the 2019 preseason.

He hasn’t played in a regular-season game yet so it’s most likely the Colts are just seeing what he has.
