Lions add Devine Ozigbo to practice squad on a busy Monday for ex-Lions looking for work

Devine Ozigbo is back on the Detroit Lions practice squad after a brief bout of unemployment. The Lions signed the veteran running back onto the practice squad on Monday after releasing him late last week in the move to sign linebacker Trevor Nowaske to the active roster.

It was a busy Monday on the NFL transaction wire for a lot of former Lions around the league. Specifically, the weekly tryout circuit featured several players who have spent some time in Detroit, including a wave of offensive linemen who played for the Lions this past preseason.

OT Ryan Swoboda – Atlanta Falcons

OT Bobby Hart – San Francisco 49ers

DB Saivion Smith – Tennessee Titans

K John Parker Romo – Titans

K Austin Seibert – Titans

None of the former Lions were signed as of Tuesday morning.

Reinforcements may be on the way for the embattled New Orleans Saints  offensive line. The team reported multiple veteran tryouts at the facility on Thursday, including a former member of their practice squad: Tulane’s John Leglue from Alexandria, La.

Here’s what you need to know about each player and what they might have to offer:

Bobby Hart: What the Lions are getting in their new OL

Breaking down what new Lions OL Bobby Hart offers to Detroit

In classic training camp fashion, the Lions add their name to the list of teams who have added a veteran free agent to their offensive line group. A veteran of 67 starts in his career, Bobby Hart fits the bill and adds depth to a crucial part of the Lions’ map to success in 2023. Injuries happen along the offensive line, adding Hart to the mix allows the team to be covered if or when it happens.

An aforementioned veteran of the NFL, Hart has played for a plethora of teams. He spent the last two years with the Buffalo Bills after jumping around teams and practice squads while filling in for injured players. That role is one that he is used to which may have added to his allure with the Lions front office.

What are the Lions getting in Bobby Hart?

Bobby Hart entered the NFL in 2015 when he was drafted in the seventh round by the New York Giants. As a rookie, Hart was being groomed to make a switch from tackle to guard due to his size but he remained a right tackle for 2015. In 2016 he would start 13 games for the Giants followed up by only starting seven the following year. After an ankle injury ended his season he would be placed on injured reserve before eventually being cut from the Giants.

His second stop in the NFL is where he would carve out a meaningful spot, this time on the Cincinnati Bengals. His first year with the team he would start every game for the team and played well enough to earn a contract extension with them valued at $16.15 million over three seasons.

He would cement himself as a reliable option on a young Bengals offensive line but ultimately he would find himself cut heading into the final year of his extension.

He would do a rinse and repeat order for several teams in 2021 as mentioned above filling in for injured players at either guard or tackle. That long and twisty road through the NFL. Hart has shown an affinity to learn offenses quickly while also being serviceable when needed in a quick matter.

Signing him in training camp allows for him to be completely antiquated with the Lions offense. It also allows him to work in either the guard or tackle position to add to his flexibility when called upon.

It won’t seem like a move worth being excited over, right now that is a fair criticism, but give it time. If Bobby Hart makes the roster that signals this team has  along term plan for the veteran offensive lineman with a starting pedigree behind him.

Lions sign veteran OT Bobby Hart, release LS Jake McQuaide

The Detroit Lions had the day off on Monday, but the team was still busy. The Lions have signed veteran offensive tackle Bobby Hart to the 90-man roster.

Hart, who turns 29 later this month, is entering his ninth NFL season. He spent most of 2022 with the Buffalo Bills as their top swing tackle. Hart has over 50 games of starting experience across time with the Giants, Bengals, Titans and Bills.

To make room for Hart, the Lions released long snapper Jake McQuaide. That means the battle for long snapper is over and Scott Daly will hold the gig for another season.

Bills OL Bobby Hart returns from suspension

#Bills OL Bobby Hart returns from suspension:

Buffalo Bills offensive lineman Bobby Hart has returned from his one-game suspension handed down by the NFL.

The team announced Hart’s addition back to the active roster on Monday. In a corresponding move, defensive tackle Prince Emili was released.

Hart was originally suspended by the league for throwing a punch at an opponent following Buffalo’s Week 2 win over the Tennessee Titans.

Hart attempted to appeal the decision. During that, Hart reportedly noted he was spit on by Titans defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons leading to his punch.

The NFL went on to uphold Hart’s suspension. Simmons was not penalized.

Heading into Week 4, Hart will be welcomed addition back to the roster. Buffalo sustained injury issues during their most-recent contest, a 21-19 loss to the Miami Dolphins. Several of those included players along the offensive line.

NFL upholds one-game suspension for Bills OL Bobby Hart

NFL upholds one-game suspension for #Bills OL Bobby Hart:

Buffalo Bills offensive lineman Bobby Hart had his one-game suspension upheld by the NFL.

The NFL and NFLPA jointly announced that verdict on Thursday.

Following Buffalo’s Week 2 meeting on Monday against the Tennessee Titans, the league announced that Hart had been suspended. Per a NFL release, Hart swung a punch at a Titans player after the 41-7 final and missed, hitting a coach instead.

The Bills are slated to face the Miami Dolphins (2-0) in Week 3 on the road on Sunday. Hart will not.

The tale took a bit of a twist on Wednesday as Hart claimed at his hearing with the league that a Titans player, defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons, spit at him. That is what Hart said caused his reaction.

Despite Hart’s side noting there was video evidence somewhere of that, there has yet to be any action taken against Simmons.

In terms of how the team feel about incident, Buffalo head coach Sean McDermott declined to comment on the incident on Thursday.

The team appears to not be holding it over Hart’s head, though.

After not giving and opinion on the matter, McDermott said he is “looking forward to getting (Hart) back when he’s back.”

Without Hart in the lineup, the Bills will likely activate offensive lineman Tommy Doyle for Sunday’s game to provide depth along the offensive line. Doyle had previously been inactive in Week 2.

Report: Suspended Bills OL Bobby Hart says Titans’ Jeffery Simmons spit on him

Report: Suspended #Bills OL Bobby Hart says #Titans’ Jeffery Simmons spit on him:

Buffalo Bills offensive lineman Bobby Hart was suspended by the NFL following the team’s 41-7 win against the Tennessee Titans.

Hart has gone on to appeal the suspension.

During that process, some more details were revealed.

According Pro Football Network’s Aaron Wilson, Hart made the claim that Titans defense tackle Jeffery Simmons had spit on him. Reportedly there was also video that surfaced showing Hart’s allegation.

Hart was initially suspended because he threw a punch at an unnamed opposing player in the tunnel following Monday’s game. Per a release from the NFL, Hart missed the punch and hit a member of the Tennessee coaching staff.

Simmons’ agent, Paul T. DeRousselle, has denied the allegation.

But the league might have to look into this deeper and not just because of the reported video evidence. According to Titans Wire, Simmons is a previous offender of similar conduct.

Back in 2020, Baltimore Ravens offensive lineman Marshal Yanda accused Simmons of spitting on him.

A ruling on Hart’s appeal is expected Thursday.

Report: Bills’ Bobby Hart claims Titans’ Jeffery Simmons spit on him

This isn’t the first time Titans DL Jeffery Simmons has been accused of spitting on someone.

Buffalo Bills offensive lineman Bobby Hart has appealed his one-game ban for inadvertently punching a Tennessee Titans coach, claiming the incident started after the team’s defense lineman, Jeffery Simmons, spat on him.

Per Pro Football Network’s Aaron Wilson, Hart made the claim during his appeal on Wednesday. There is also apparently video out there of Hart’s allegation.

During the hearing, per sources, it was alleged that there’s a video from the game that shows Simmons apparently spitting on Hart, which led to the confrontation following the game during which Hart inadvertently made contact with an unnamed Titans assistant coach.

Simmons’ agent, Paul T. DeRousselle, has denied the allegation.

“Jeffery [Simmons] plays the game with a lot of passion, but he plays the game the right way,” DeRousselle said.

This isn’t the first time Simmons has been accused of spitting on an opposing player. Back in 2020, Baltimore Ravens offensive lineman Marshal Yanda accused Simmons of spitting on him.

“I’ve never been spitten in my face,” Yanda said. “I literally got spit right in my face by No. 98. He needs to be put on notice by the refs, by the entire NFL. He was saying some stuff today that’s just ridiculous conduct for the NFL. I just want to put him on notice. That was ridiculous conduct.”

A ruling on Hart’s appeal is expected Thursday.
