2025 NFL draft: 4 potential Chargers targets that stood out on Day 2 of East-West Shrine Bowl

Day 2 of the East-West Shrine Bowl offered plenty of standout players that should have caught the attention of the Los Angeles Chargers.

The East-West Shrine Bowl continued Sunday in Frisco, TX, with the second practice session leading up to Thursday’s game.

Here are four players who made positive impressions.

TE Oronde Gadsden II, Syracuse

The Chargers need more production from their tight ends in the passing game. Gadsden brings a wide receiver skillset to the tight end position. For his size, at 6-foot-2 and 247 pounds, he is a smooth mover with good foot quickness and explosive in and out of his routes. Gadsden caught everything thrown at him, reeling in the football with his long wingspan and strong hands. He led all tight ends nationally with 969 yards receiving.

DL Zeek Biggers, Georgia Tech

This year’s draft class is filled with polarizing defensive tackles. Biggers is among the crop that could be an option for the Chargers on Day 3. Hulking at 6-foot-5 and 320 pounds with 35-inch arms, Biggers caused fits for blockers in 1-on-1s and team drills with his length, burst, and power at the point of attack. He also showed the ability to split double teams.

WR Jackson Meeks, Syracuse

The wide receiver room needs some retooling this offseason. The Chargers should look to add a true No. 1 wideout, but additional depth is also a must. Meeks raised eyebrows by consistently getting open with sharpness in his routes and playing physical. He made a nice catch through a defensive pass interference penalty deep down the sideline. Meeks only had 10 catches for 131 yards during his time with Georgia, and amassed 78 catches for 1,021 yards, and seven catches in one season with Syracuse.

S Shamari Simmons, Arizona State

I mentioned Simmons in my players to watch at this event, highlighting his versatility. While he is likely best suited as big Nickel in the NFL, Simmons showed his ability to play the single-high safety, as he made an impressive, backward lunging pick off a deep ball. His physicality and violent style of play would be good on special teams.

Former Georgia WR declares for NFL draft after breakout season

Former Georgia wide receiver finished the 2024 college football season second-leading leading receiver in the ACC

Former Georgia Bulldogs wide receiver Jackson Meeks has declared for the 2025 NFL draft after a breakout season with the Syracuse Orange. Meeks finished the 2024 college football season as the No. 2 leading receiver in the ACC (as of Dec. 31).

Meeks, who transferred to Syracuse after the 2023 college football season, was one of three ACC receivers who recorded more than 1,000 receiving yards. Meeks helped Syracuse go 10-3. The former Georgia receiver finished 2024 with a career-best 78 receptions for 1,021 receiving yards and seven touchdowns. Meeks was a major part of the Orange’s elite passing game.

The Syracuse receiver helped his NFL draft stock significantly with his senior season. Meeks took the time to thank Georgia and Syracuse in a letter in which he announced his decision to declare for the NFL draft.

“Coach (Kirby) Smart. You taught me patience and resilience that has been invaluable. You have shown me that success is not just about talent, it’s about perseverance and effort in the face of adversity,” Meeks said.

“Those lessons have shaped not only my approach to the game but to life itself. Thank you for pushing me beyond my limits and instilling a sense of perseverance that I will carry with me for a lifetime,” continued Meeks.

Syracuse beat Washington State in the Holiday Bowl to cap an excellent first season under coach Fran Brown, a former Georgia defensive backs coach. It is clear Meeks and other Syracuse players love playing for Brown.

Georgia transfer ranks among ACC’s top receivers

Former Georgia wide receiver, who is now with Syracuse, is the No. 6 leading receiver in the ACC

Former Georgia Bulldog Jackson Meeks is turning heads with the Syracuse Orange.  Meeks is the No. 6 leading receiver in the ACC with two games left in the regular season.

Meeks has 59 receptions for 691 receiving yards and five touchdowns this season. Amazingly, Meeks is the third leading receiver on Syracuse. The Orange have three of the ACC’s top six leading receivers. Meeks has been a reliable target throughout the season and has helped his NFL draft stock significantly.

Syracuse is a surprising 7-3 under former Georgia Bulldogs defensive backs coach Fran Brown, and a big reason for that is Meeks and the offense. Meeks transferred from Georgia to Syracuse last spring along with fellow receiver Zeed Haynes, who has eight receptions for 97 yards this season.

Brown has done wonders for the Orange and could be a candidate to land a major Power Four job after this season if he does not sign a contract extension.

Syracuse hosts UConn and Miami over the final two weeks of the season. The Orange will finish with one of their best seasons in recent memory if they’re able to win out.

UGA football transfer is ACC team’s leading receiver

Former Georgia Bulldogs football wide receiver is the leading receiver for Syracuse, who is 5-1 to start the year

Former Georgia Bulldog Jackson Meeks is making a name for himself with the Syracuse Orange. Earlier this month, the UGA transfer was the highest graded wide receiver by Pro Football Focus. This week, he made PFF’s ACC Team for his Week 7 performance.

The receiver was nothing short of dominant against North Carolina State, totaling 116 yards and a touchdown on 11 receptions in a 24-17 win. His touchdown effectively won the Orange the game with 10 minutes left in the fourth quarter.

Meeks has 459 yards (team-high) and four touchdowns on 38 receptions this season. He has caught a touchdown in each of the last four games, and he’s averaged 96 yards a game during that same span.

Syracuse is a surprising 5-1 under former Georgia Bulldog coordinator Fran Brown, and a big reason for that is Meeks and the offense. Meeks transferred from Georgia to Syracuse last spring, along with Zeed Haynes. The Bulldog transfer has been a star throughout the season, and with more games like these, he could increase his NFL draft stock, too.

Meeks and Syracuse have a bye this week before playing Pittsburgh on Oct. 24 in a key ACC game.

Georgia Bulldog transfer has breakout performance

Georgia Bulldogs football transfer wide receiver goes off for the Syracuse Orange.

Former Georgia Bulldog wide receiver Jackson Meeks has been looking for opportunities to prove himself as a top wide receiver on the Syracuse Orange. This past week, he went a long way towards doing that.

Against the Holy Cross Crusaders, Meeks had a career day, racking up 161 yards and a touchdown on 10 receptions. He was a big part of the Syracuse offense in a dominating 42-14 win.

His strong performance earned him the top Pro Football Focus grade of any wide receiver in the country this week, with a 90.2 grade. It also earned him a spot on the All-ACC team in PFF for Week 5.

Before this game, Meeks had only tallied about 3 receptions per game, but he was doing well with them, totaling about 38 yards a game, meaning he had over 12 yards a reception. With fellow Georgia transfer Yazeed Haynes missing time due to personal reasons, Meeks took advantage of his improved playing time. It’ll be interesting to see how both their college careers pan out, but for Meeks, it could be a sign of dominance to come.

Syracuse is 3-1 to start the season under former Georgia Bulldogs defensive back coach Fran Brown.

Georgia WR announces transfer destination

Jackson Meeks announces transfer destination

Georgia Bulldogs wide receiver Jackson Meeks entered the transfer portal on Dec. 4 with one year of eligibility remaining. Now, the Phenix City, Alabama, native has found a new home.

Meeks is joining former UGA defensive backs coach Fran Brown at Syracuse.

Playing time as a wideout came sparingly for Meeks, who was most productive on special teams throughout his three seasons as a Bulldog.

The 6-foot-2, 205 pounder played in 36 career games and recorded 10 receptions for 132 yards, while adding five tackles on special teams.

Meeks is the third Bulldog in the portal to find a new home. Quarterback Brock Vandagriff committed to Kentucky and defensive lineman Jonathan Jefferson committed to SMU.

Georgia football WR enters transfer portal

Georgia football wide receiver becomes the sixth Bulldog to enter the transfer portal.

Georgia Bulldogs wide receiver Jackson Meeks has entered the transfer portal. As of the time of this post, Meeks was the sixth Bulldog to enter the portal.

Meeks is a key special teamer for Georgia. However, Meeks had trouble earning significant playing time and targets in Georgia’s deep wide receiver room. Meeks hauled in one catch for 23 yards this season.

The 6-foot-2, 205-pound junior will have one season of eligibility left at his new home. Meeks is likely looking for more playing time at his transfer destination.

Meeks announced his plans to enter the transfer portal via social media:

Meeks is a former three-star recruit. He recorded 10 catches for 132 yards over three seasons at Georgia. Meeks also added five tackles in his career.

UGA recruiting: hometown WR Deion Colzie makes commitment

Four-star wide receiver Deion Colzie of Athens Academy has committed to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish over the Georgia Bulldogs.

Wide receiver Deion Colzie decommitted from Notre Dame back in March and reopened his recruitment. Colzie is a member of the class of 2021 and has now re-affirmed his commitment to the Fighting Irish.

Colzie plays for Athens Academy in Athens, Georgia, and is probably the best hometown prospect for the Georgia Bulldogs this year. Colzie is rated as a four-star recruit.

Per 247Sports, Georgia was a slight crystal ball favorite to land Colzie. Three of the six favored of the Bulldogs earlier in Sept. on Colzie’s 247Sports profile page.  Will Colzie stick the Fighting Irish for good or later flip to his hometown team, the Georgia Bulldogs?

Colzie ranks as the nation’s No. 84 overall prospect and as the No. 14 wide receiver in the 2021 class.

The Athens recruit released his top 10 via Twitter several months ago. He put Georgia, Auburn, Tennessee, Notre Dame, Oregon, Ole Miss, Penn State, Virginia, Florida and Alabama among his top schools.

Kirby Smart and Georgia will have to hope to keep the hometown kid in Athens via a last minute flip. UGA currently has two commitments from wide receivers in the class of 2021: Adonai Mitchell and Jackson Meeks.

Best of luck to Colzie with the Fighting Irish. I wouldn’t rule out a flip at this point, but for now, Colzie’s committed to Notre Dame.
