Steelers injury update: Starting guard non-committal on status vs Cowboys

Isaac Seumalo isn’t sure if he’s playing Sunday night or not against the Cowboys.

Last week the Pittsburgh Steelers offensive line was dealt a serious blow when starting guard James Daniels was lost for the season with a torn Achilles. However, the hope was this week the team would get fellow starting guard Isaac Seumalo back after missing the first four games of the season to help bolster the offensive line against the Dallas Cowboys.

But when Seumalo spoke to the media on Friday, he wasn’t ready to declare himself playing this Sunday and instead left it up to head coach Mike Tomlin to make that call.

“Yeah, I feel pretty good,” Seumalo said. “I’ll let Coach Tomlin decide on that, but I felt good the past couple days.”

This doesn’t sound like a guy who is 100 percent and ready to roll. Seumalo has been dealing with a pectoral injury and it isn’t the type of injury you rush back from. We won’t be at all surprised if Tomlin opts to give him one more week of rest.

This would mean that rookie Mason McCormick would slide over from the left to the right to replace Daniels and Spencer Anderson would plug into Seumalo’s starting spot at left guard.

Isaac Seumalo’s return would lift Steelers offense

Isaac Seumalo could make his return in Week 5 against the Dallas Cowboys, but how does this truly impact Pittsburgh’s inconsistent offense?

It is no secret that through the first two weeks, including their first-half performance in Week 4, the Pittsburgh Steelers offense looked lethargic. Key pieces of the offensive line struggled with run blocking, were undisciplined with penalties and at times even appeared to give up on plays.

What they seem to be missing is a true leader on the offensive line — and that leader is Isaac Seumalo.

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin is hopeful that Seumalo will make his comeback against the 2-2 Dallas Cowboys on Sunday night in Week 5.

Seumalo’s expertise lies in consistency and discipline. He has been playing at a high level for the past couple of seasons, and he has a wealth of postseason experience, having played in two Super Bowls with the Philadelphia Eagles.

With the Steelers’ offensive line losing three starters to season-ending injuries, they need Seumalo’s leadership and presence to help mold the identity of the offense.

Steelers have ‘real shot’ to get key offensive lineman back for Week 5

Pittsburgh Steelers guard Isaac Seumalo could be back in action for Dallas Cowboys matchup.

The Pittsburgh Steelers‘ offensive line has been decimated by injuries since Week 1, but they could get a key contributor back just in time to take on the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday night.

Right guard Isaac Seumalo, who’s missed the first four games of the season with a pectoral strain, is getting closer to returning to the lineup.

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin had this to say in Tuesday’s press conference about the veteran lineman:

I’m excited about the potential of having Isaac back in the offensive line, especially given some of the attrition that’s happened there in recent weeks. He was close last week. I think it’s reasonable to assume that he’s got a real shot to make it this time around.

Three O-line starters are done for the season: Center Nate Herbig (torn rotator cuff), tackle Troy Fautanu (knee) and left guard James Daniels (knee).

Colts missing 6 starters versus the Steelers

The Colts defense is thin versus the Steelers this week.

It is only Week Four of the NFL regular season but the Indianapolis Colts are already pushing their depth to the limits, especially on defense. When the Colts square off with the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday, they will do it without six starters, five of which are on defense.

In looking at the Colts defenders that are out, it’s clear the Indianapolis defensive line is the spot for the Steelers to attack. Pittsburgh’s rushing attack is still getting up to speed and a hobbled defensive front might be the boost running back Najee Harris needs.

Here is a full rundown of the Colts starters out this week versus the Steelers.

*C Ryan Kelly (neck)

*CB Kenny Moore II (hip)

*DE Kwity Paye (quad)

*DT DeForest Buckner (ankle)

*CB JuJu Brents (knee)

*DE Samson Ebukam (Achilles)

The only Steelers starter out for this week is guard Isaac Seumalo. He is being replaced in the starting lineup by rookie Mason McCormick.

Steelers add second rookie to starting offensive line vs Colts

Mason McCormick gets the start at left tackle tis week.

When the Pittsburgh Steelers take on the Indianapolis Colts in Week Four, they will do so with two rookies on the offensive line. According to Steelers beat reporter Gerry Dulac, guard Mason McCormick will get the start at left guard over Spencer Anderson.

McCormick replaced Anderson in the lineup last week against the Los Angeles Chargers and played well. According to Dulac, Anderson could still rotate in with McCormick.

The Steelers selected McCormick in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL draft out of South Dakota State. Most pundits considered the selection of McCormick a bargain for the Steelers and the pick was highly regarded as solid value.

The Steelers also have Zach Frazier in the starting lineup as a rookie at center and if he didn’t go on IR, it’s like a third rookie, offensive tackle Troy Fautanu would be starting this week against the Colts as well.

McCormick gets the start while starting left guard Isaac Seumalo continues to inch his way back from a pectoral injury. There was some hope that Seumalo might play this week but he was ruled out late.

Falcons News: Steelers rule out starting offensive lineman for Week 1

The Falcons defensive line could have a big day in Week 1 now that the Steelers have ruled their starting left guard

The Atlanta Falcons defensive line could have a big game when the Pittsburgh Steelers come to town this Sunday to kick off the 2024 NFL season. Steelers starting left guard Isaac Seumalo has been ruled out for Week 1, head coach Mike Tomlin told reporters on Tuesday afternoon.

Seumalo, a former third-round pick by the Philadelphia Eagles, signed a three-year deal with Pittsburgh in 2023 and started all 17 games last season. Second-year offensive lineman Spencer Anderson will replace Seumalo at left guard on Sunday. Anderson, a seventh-round pick in 2023, will make his first career start.

Seumalo will be one of two Steelers offensive linemen making their first career start in Week 1. Rookie Zach Frazier will get the start at center for Pittsburgh. We know Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith likes to run the ball and Seumalo is arguably the team’s best run blocker.

Quarterback Russell Wilson will get the start against Atlanta, but Tomlin said backup Justin Fields could also get playing time. Check back for the Falcons’ first regular season depth chart later this afternoon.

Steelers vs Falcons: Mike Tomlin names starting right guard for this week

Spencer Anderson will get the nod at right guard vs the Falcons.

With starting right guard Isaac Seumalo out for the foreseeable future, the Pittsburgh Steelers will debut a new starter this week against the Atlanta Falcons. Head coach Mike Tomlin met with the media on Tuesday ahead of this week’s game and named his starter.

According to Tomlin, Spencer Anderson will get the start versus Atlanta as opposed to rookie Mason McCormick. The Steelers signed Anderson last season as a rookie and he was active for eight games.

We thought the Steelers might opt for the rookie McCormick who has been impressive in training camp and the preseason. But it makes more sense to play it safe with Anderson, especially given the Steelers will be starting rookie Zach Frazier at center.

The Steelers took strides to improve their offensive line this offseason but through three preseason games, we haven’t seen it. The new Steelers offense is predicated on the run game so having consistency along the offensive front is a must.

Steelers get good news on Isaac Seumalo injury

Pittsburgh Steelers veteran guard Isaac Seumalo is out versus the Atlanta Falcons but the team got good news on his pectoral injury.

Isaac Seumalo will not be among the offensive linemen that suit up when the Pittsburgh Steelers take on the Falcons in Atlanta on Sunday. However, Mike Tomlin said in his Week 1 preview press conference that the team recently got good news on the status of his pectoral strain, which he sustained in practice on Aug. 28.

Tomlin, who categorized Seumalo as week-to-week, did not go into detail about what that news is, but anything that isn’t injured reserve is good news.

Second-year lineman Spencer Anderson, who took second-team reps at training camp, will likely get the nod during Seumalo’s absence.

Steelers insiders updates timeline for Isaac Seumalo injury

The Pittsburgh Steelers will be without their starting guard to start the season, as Isaac Seumalo sustained a pectoral injury at practice.

The Pittsburgh Steelers will be without their starting guard to start the season, as Isaac Seumalo sustained a pectoral injury at practice on Wednesday.

According to Gerry Dulac and Ray Fittipaldo of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Seumalo is expected to miss “about a month” of the 2024 season.

The question now becomes whether Seumalo will be placed on injured reserve or kept on the 53-man roster. If Mike Tomlin opts for IR, Seumalo must miss four games with return eligibility for the Dallas Cowboys on Oct. 6.

Spencer Anderson worked as Seumalo’s backup in training camp and could be his replacement for the Sept. 8 season opener in Atlanta.

REPORT: Steelers ‘dodged a bullet’ with offensive lineman injury

Initital tests show that Pittsburgh Steelers guard Isaac Seumalo’s pectoral injury is not season-ending.

A source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter that the Pittsburgh Steelers “dodged a bullet” with the recent injury to offensive lineman Isaac Seumalo.

Initial tests showed the veteran guard’s injury is not season-ending.

Initial tests showed that Steelers guard Isaac Seumalo did not suffer a season-ending pectoral injury. The team still is weighing how long he could miss but as one source said, ‘We dodged a bullet.’

According to CBS News/KDKA, a full tear of the pectoral muscle will take four to six months to heal and would require surgery to repair the damage, in addition to eight to 12 weeks or rehab. A partial tear only needs some rest to heal and can take four to six weeks.

The Steelers did add tackle/guard Doug Nester to the practice squad today, but look for rookie Mason McCormick or second-year lineman Spencer Anderson to fill the void should the injury, indeed, be temporary.
