Steelers QB Russell Wilson now has a new pass-catcher in Van Jefferson

Steelers QB Russell Wilson now has a new pass-catcher in Van Jefferson.

Russell Wilson now has a new pass-catcher. Van Jefferson officially became a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers, the team announced on Monday.

In a span of five seasons, Jefferson managed just 1,600 yards and 10 touchdowns. Where there’s hope is his yards-per-catch average of 14.2.

The Jefferson acquisition has Arthur Smith‘s name all over it. In what would be Smith’s last season as head coach of the Atlanta Falcons, the team received Jefferson and a 2025 seventh-round pick from the Rams in exchange for a 2025 sixth-round selection.

In 12 games (five starts) in 2023, Jefferson logged 101 yards and zero touchdowns. As a depth piece, he should do well in Smith’s system.

The Steelers are hosting L.A. Chargers free agent wide receiver Mike Williams later this week. Although his injury history (back, ankle, knee, and neck) is concerning, Williams has been productive when available.

Steelers hosting FA wide receiver Mike Williams for a visit

The Steelers continue to try to add pieces on offense.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have been working at a frenetic pace this offseason adding talent and it sounds like they are not done. According to multiple sources including ESPN NFL reporter Adam Schefter, the Steelers are planning to host former Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Mike Williams for a visit.

The Steelers traded away starting wide receiver Diontae Johnson at the start of free agency to help save money, add a starting cornerback and remove a potential troublemaker in the locker room. The Steelers signed free agent wide receiver Van Jefferson already but Williams brings a whole different level of production and experience.

We doubt he will leave if the Steelers get Williams into Pittsburgh for a visit. General Manager Omar Khan has been working his magic all offseason so we have no doubt he can make the sell to Williams to come join this talented group of skill players and catch passes from Russell Wilson.

Ex-Falcons WR Van Jefferson signing with Pittsburgh Steelers

Ex-Falcons WR Van Jefferson is joining Arthur Smith in Pittsburgh, signing a one-year deal with the Steelers on Friday

Former Falcons wide receiver Van Jefferson has found a new home, signing a one-year deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Ari Meirov of the 33rd Team reported on Friday evening. Atlanta acquired Jefferson in a trade with the Rams early in the 2023 season.

The 27-year-old will reunite with former Falcons head coach and current Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith in Pittsburgh.

Jefferson appeared in 12 games for the Falcons last season, recording 12 catches for 101 receiving yards. The Rams drafted Jefferson in the second round of the 2020 NFL draft out of the University of Florida.

The Steelers will look to revamp their offense under Smith and quarterback Russell Wilson in 2024. Pittsburgh traded Kenny Pickett to the Philadelphia Eagles on Friday, marking the third QB from the 2022 draft class to be moved in the last 24 hours.

Atlanta shipped Desmond Ridder to Arizona in exchange for slot receiver Rondale Moore. The Falcons also signed free agents Darnell Mooney and Ray-Ray McCloud. Stay up to date with each transaction using our 2024 free agency tracker.

Steelers free agency: Ex-Rams, Falcons WR Van Jefferson signs deal with Pittsburgh

The Steelers signed former Rams second-round WR Van Jefferson to a one-year contract.

The Pittsburgh Steelers signed a Jefferson today. It wasn’t the Jefferson fans would’ve liked to see in the black and gold (ahem, Justin) — instead, Van Jefferson, former second-round pick of the Los Angeles Rams.

According to Ari Meirov of The 33rd Team, the Steelers signed Jefferson to a one-year deal.

This clearly puts the Steelers in the market for a top-round receiver in the NFL draft. For those looking for a receiver who can come in and replace Diontae Johnson, this ain’t it.

In a span of five seasons, Jefferson managed just 1,600 yards and 10 touchdowns. Where there’s hope is his yards-per-catch average of 14.2.

His experience playing in and winning a Super Bowl will come in handy, too.

The Jefferson acquisition has Arthur Smith‘s name all over it. In what would be Smith’s last season as head coach of the Atlanta Falcons, the team received Jefferson and a 2025 seventh-round pick from the Rams in exchange for a 2025 sixth-round selection.

In 12 games (five starts), Jefferson logged 101 yards and zero touchdowns in 2023.

1 pending free agent the Eagles could target from each NFC team

We’re looking at one pending free agent from each NFC team that the Philadelphia Eagles could target

Free agency is about two weeks away, and the Philadelphia Eagles have several players set to hit the open market. General manager Howie Roseman has to make critical decisions to fill roster holes.

While Roseman will likely look to the free agent market for answers, several in-house free agents are candidates to sign an extension ahead of free agency.

The Birds are set to have 20 pending free agents, and with another likely retool schedule on defense, the organization could conjure up a scheme for more flexibility.

According to Over the Cap’s potential transaction chart, the Eagles can easily create $35.4 million in cap space by making these five moves.

With the new league year fast approaching, we’re looking at one pending free agent from each NFC team that could interest Philadelphia.

Falcons WR Drake London ruled out vs. Vikings

The Vikings path to victory got a little bit easier on Sunday

The Minnesota Vikings will have an easier time on Sunday when the face the Atlanta Falcons. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, wide receiver Drake London will not play on Sunday due to a groin injury.

The Falcons selected the 6’4″ 213 lb wide receiver at eighth overall in the 2022 NFL draft. During his career, London has made an impact in his short time with 109 receptions for 1,304 yards and six touchdowns.

His massive frame and ability to box out defender paired with excellent body control makes him a unique weapon on the outside.

In his place, Mack Hollins and Van Jefferson will need to step up on the outside and Kyle Pitts at tight end.

NFL fans crushed Van Jefferson after his brutal drop on 4th down ended the Falcons’ comeback hopes

Hit him right in the hands …

The Atlanta Falcons went into Sunday’s Week 8 game against the Titans in sole possession of first place in the NFC South and the league’s easiest remaining schedule. But it didn’t take long at all for the Falcons to have a costly letdown.

A few weeks ago, the Falcons traded for former Rams wide receiver Van Jefferson. It was seen as an opportunity for Jefferson to regain the form he showed in 2021. Yet, he did himself no favors with one of the worst drops you’ll see in Atlanta’s 28-23 loss.

With the Falcons down five and looking for a go-ahead touchdown drive, a fourth-down pass from Taylor Heinicke (who replaced Desmond Ridder) went right through Jefferson’s hands. With no timeouts remaining for the Falcons, that drop effectively ended the game.

And though one play didn’t lose the game for Atlanta, it was a pass that Jefferson absolutely needed to catch.

NFL fans were not kind to the veteran receiver after the horrible drop.

Sean McVay: ‘Huge part’ of Van Jefferson trade was helping ‘a really special person’

Sean McVay made it clear that the Rams wanted to help out Van Jefferson in a contract year and accommodate him with the trade to Atlanta

With three weeks until the trade deadline, the Los Angeles Rams struck their second deal of the season. On Tuesday, they sent Van Jefferson and a 2025 seventh-round pick to the Falcons for a 2025 sixth-rounder – minimal return for a wide receiver who was selected in the second round in 2020.

Many are wondering why the Rams got so little for Jefferson in this trade, even with him being in a contract year. And unsurprisingly, it’s partly because the Rams wanted to do right by Jefferson and help him out.

Jefferson played just two snaps on Sunday against the Eagles, which was the first real sign that he’d have no role on offense with Cooper Kupp back. So rather than keeping him as a depth piece and giving him very little playing time, Sean McVay said the Rams preferred to accommodate Jefferson by sending him somewhere he was wanted.

“This was something that we had kind of talked about the possibility of and felt like it was able to work out for both sides,” McVay said Wednesday. “I know he’s excited about the opportunity to go contribute in Atlanta and I got a ton of respect for (Falcons coach) Arthur Smith. Have a great relationship with (Falcons OC) Dave Ragone. He was somebody that they had been interested in and it worked out and Van was excited about that opportunity, but he did a great job for us here. I love Van and I was grateful for the conversations and the clarity that we had going into that. I know he’s excited about that and just appreciative of him. And he’s, like I said, special person, special player, and it was a lot of good memories that we had here and a lot of things that I really appreciate about the person as much as the player.”

McVay called this trade “bittersweet” for him because while he’s sad to see Jefferson go, he’s also happy for the receiver in his new opportunity where he’ll get more playing time to prove himself than he would have in Los Angeles.

This wasn’t a traditional trade situation, and certainly not similar to the one involving Cam Akers last month. With Akers, it was about moving a disgruntled player who didn’t fit the culture. With Jefferson, it was about giving him a fresh start with a new team that would give him more snaps than the Rams would’ve.

“Every situation is a little bit different so I don’t think you want to pigeonhole yourself into saying this is the standard operating procedure, but it was special because of who he is, the way he’s handled himself, the unique circumstances that presented himself that you had some other guys that have done a really good job,” McVay said. “You get Cooper back in the mix and he’s a really capable player. Even when I said to you guys the other day, I didn’t anticipate him playing two snaps but I think he felt like those opportunities would be better for him. He’s in the last year of his contract and that was something that we felt like we were kind of able to accommodate both sides.”

McVay said he and Jefferson had “honest dialogue” about what the receiver’s role would probably look like the rest of the season, but McVay stopped short of saying Jefferson requested a trade.

“I’m going to keep all that stuff in-house,” he replied.

As for why the Rams moved Jefferson now instead of closer to the trade deadline when teams might’ve been more desperate for receiver help, McVay went back to the same reasoning: He wanted to help out Jefferson and accommodate him.

“I think there was partly a consideration for the person too and you do have to make decisions that are best for the team, but based on some of the things that we felt like were possible down the road and looking out for him and for us, that was just what we felt like was the best decision. A huge part of it was trying to be considerate to a really special person,” McVay said.

“There’s so many layers to it,” he continued. “Like I said, some of it is about the team, some of it is about the individual person. There was a huge part of it too that he’s in the last year of his contract and felt like Atlanta was going to be an opportunity where he felt good about that. That was really important to me and to us and so that was kind of how it unfolded.”

With Jefferson gone, Ben Skowronek and Demarcus Robinson become the immediate backups to Kupp, Puka Nacua and Tutu Atwell at wide receiver. McVay’s confidence in those two players was also part of the reason the team felt comfortable trading Jefferson, knowing the Rams had the depth to overcome that loss.

Since McVay took over in 2017, the Rams have always tried to do right by their players and take their desires into consideration. It’s partly what makes the Rams a destination team for players, and further cements McVay as a player’s coach who guys want to play for.

Former Gators WR Van Jefferson joins another UF alumnus after trade

Former Gators WR Van Jefferson gets traded to the Atlanta Falcons

A former Florida Gators wide receiver found a new home in the NFL after being traded from the Los Angeles Rams. Atlanta Falcons newcomer Van Jefferson will reunite him with another former Gator, tight end Kyle Pitts.

Jefferson became lost in the depth chart this season with the rise of Los Angeles wideout Puka Nacua and the recent return of starting receiver Cooper Kupp.

Since the combination of the two looks like a formula for success, Jefferson only saw two snaps during Sunday’s loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. The fourth-year NFL veteran has only been targeted 15 times in 2023.

Jefferson wasn’t a priority in the Rams playbook, but he may have a bright future to headline the Falcons’ receiving corps with Pitts.

Atlanta found a way to get Pitts more involved in the offense last Sunday and rookie running back Bijan Robinson has been dangerous so far. The Falcons are slowly building pieces to create a fast-paced offense, especially with mobile quarterback Desmond Ridder.

Pitts and Jefferson will play together for the first time since the 2019 college football season.

Experts hand out grades for Rams trading Van Jefferson to Falcons

See how experts graded the Rams’ trade involving Van Jefferson

The Los Angeles Rams dumped another former second-round pick on Tuesday when they traded Van Jefferson to the Atlanta Falcons, a deal that came less than a month after they sent Cam Akers to the Minnesota Vikings. Similar to the Akers trade, the Rams got very little in return for Jefferson.

They sent the Falcons a 2025 seventh-round pick with Jefferson and will only get back a 2025 sixth-rounder. There are questions about why the Rams made this deal, but it likely came down to clearing $1 million in cap space and helping out a wide receiver buried on the depth chart by giving him a fresh start somewhere else.

Despite the minimal return, experts didn’t hate the deal for Los Angeles. Here’s how three of them graded the trade for the Rams.
