7 players Giants should consider adding following cutdown day

Cutdown day has come and gone across the NFL and the New York Giants should considering claiming or signing these seven available players.

More than 1,100 players were released, cut or waived on Tuesday as teams trimmed their roster to the required 53 men. Now the race is on to claim or sign those who are available, effectively rounding out rosters ahead of the regular season.

The New York Giants put in seven waiver claims a year ago and were awarded multiple players. General manager Joe Schoen certainly isn’t going to sit on his hands this time around, so expect Big Blue to be active.

Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll will be on the hunt for anyone they believe will help improve their roster.

With that in mind, here’s a look at seven players the Giants should consider claiming or signing on Wednesday.

List of #Bills players heading into final year of their contract in 2023 (via @TejasVemparala):

The 2023 NFL season has a sense of continued hope and optimism attached to the Buffalo Bills, much like the last couple of years. Could they go all the way? What happens if they don’t?

The desire will continue in Buffalo, but some players could be playing their final year at Highmark Stadium once the season gets rolling.

This leads to a list of players that the team needs to consider signing extensions with based on how the season ends.

Bills re-sign Ike Boettger to one-year deal

#Bills re-sign Ike Boettger to one-year deal:

The Buffalo Bills have gotten on the board with a re-signing.

The team announced on Friday that offensive lineman Ike Boettger was re-signed. It’s a one-year deal.

Boettger, 28, was on the Bills in 2022 but spent the majority of the year rehabbing from an Achilles injury he suffered the year prior.

Before that injury, Boettger was starting for Buffalo. He made nine-straight starts and then was replaced in the lineup by Ryan Bates.

Bates’ efforts earned him an offer sheet from the Chicago Bears last offseason which was matched by the Bills. Bates remains in Buffalo under that four-year deal.

Because of the Bills’ salary cap restraints and likely desire to improve on the interior of the offensive line, Buffalo bringing Boettger under a short-term deal makes plenty of sense.

The Bills will likely involve Boettger in the summer competition for a starting spot at guard. Along with Bates starting last season, so was Rodger Saffold, who is a pending free agent.

Boettger also has versatility to play center, which makes him an asset as a backup to Mitch Morse.

Boettger entered the NFL with the Bills as an undrafted rookie free agent. He briefly spent time with the Kansas City Chiefs but later returned to Buffalo.

Bills activate Ike Boettger from Reserve/PUP list

#Bills activate Ike Boettger from Reserve/PUP list:

The Buffalo Bills welcomed Ike Boettger back to their offensive line and roster.

On Monday, the Bills (11-3) announced that Boettger has been activated from the team’s Reserve/PUP list.

Boettger had been on the injury designation for almost a year exactly. In Week 16 last season, Botteger suffered an Achilles injury. He had surgery and his season was over.

Now, Boettger is back on the 53-man roster ahead of Buffalo’s upcoming contest against the Chicago Bears (3-11)… in Week 16 of this year.

During the Bills’ 32-29 win against the Miami Dolphins, Ryan Bates did not play due to a calf injury. Bates originally got his starting job last season when Boettger went down.

It’s unclear if Bates will play against the Bears. Buffalo’s coaching staff might have to make a decision between the two… unless Mitch Morse does not play.

Morse is in the concussion protocol. If he can’t go, Bates would likely move to Morse’s center spot and if Boettger can play, he’d go in at guard.

In a corresponding move, defensive tackle Brandin Bryant was released.

Bills designate Ike Boettger for return from injured reserve

OL Ike Boettger designated to return from injured reserve with Achilles injury.

The Buffalo Bills have seen the return of cornerback Tre’Davious White from injured reserve in recent weeks.

Now Ike Boettger is set to follow.

Buffalo head coach Sean McDermott announced on Monday that Boettger was designated to return from injured reserve.

In Week 16 last season, Boettger suffered an Achilles injury. It ended his year and he had surgery to repair it.

In early November, Boettger was first spotted at Bills practice doing workouts on the side. However, those were just individual workouts.

The new designation opens a 21-day window for Boettger to practice with his teammates as he preps for a return to the lineup. If the team does not bring him back to their 53-man roster at that time, Boettger reverts back to injured reserve for the remainder of the season.

The Bills do not have to wait the 21 days, though. Buffalo can activate Boettger at any time.

For most of the 2022 season, the Bills have had Rodger Saffold and Ryan Bates starting at guard. At this time it would appear that Boettger likely returns initially in a depth role, but a valuable and experienced option at that.

This spring, Saffold signed in Buffalo as a free agent. The Bills also re-signed both Bates and Boettger to contracts.
