Buffalo Bills vs. New England Patriots: Team connections

#Bills vs. #Patriots: Team connections:

The Buffalo Bills will host the New England Patriots for a matchup on Sunday afternoon in Week 17.

It’s a brand new NFL weekend with plenty on the line for both teams. But for some on the Bills (9-6) and Patriots (4-11) there is a bit more at stake than others.

That’s because multiple players or coaches for both sides are going to be playing against their former teams. That can create a little bit of extra motivation for them heading into Sunday… as expected.

With that, here’s a quick list of connections the two teams have with one another ahead of the upcoming matchup at Highmark Stadium:

7 players Giants should consider adding following cutdown day

Cutdown day has come and gone across the NFL and the New York Giants should considering claiming or signing these seven available players.

More than 1,100 players were released, cut or waived on Tuesday as teams trimmed their roster to the required 53 men. Now the race is on to claim or sign those who are available, effectively rounding out rosters ahead of the regular season.

The New York Giants put in seven waiver claims a year ago and were awarded multiple players. General manager Joe Schoen certainly isn’t going to sit on his hands this time around, so expect Big Blue to be active.

Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll will be on the hunt for anyone they believe will help improve their roster.

With that in mind, here’s a look at seven players the Giants should consider claiming or signing on Wednesday.

Studs and duds from Patriots’ preseason finale loss to Titans

Who were the studs and duds for the Patriots on Friday night?

The preseason didn’t end the way the New England Patriots hoped in Friday’s road trip meeting with the Tennessee Titans in Nashville. There were issues on offense, defense and special teams that culminated in a 23-7 loss for New England.

The Patriots opted not to play their starters in this game, while the Titans trotted starters on the field for several plays. Even starting quarterback Ryan Tannehill got in on the action briefly.

It wasn’t the most exciting game given the constant struggles along the offensive front. Bailey Zappe, who received the starting nod, looked helpless against the Titans’ defensive front. On defense, the Patriots did show some promise, but they also struggled keeping scrambling Titans quarterback Malik Willis in check.

Let’s take a look at the studs and duds from the game.

Report: Patriots agree to deal with former Bills LB on Wednesday

The Patriots made a roster move ahead of Thursday’s preseason opener.

The New England Patriots are making another move to boost their linebacker corps. Per ESPN’s Mike Reiss, the Patriots have agreed to a deal with former Buffalo Bills defensive player Joe Giles-Harris.

In four years in the league, Giles-Harris has appeared in only 17 games. He was in on 204 snaps defensively for the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2020, but since joining the Bills, he had spent the last two seasons as solely a special teams contributor.

The Patriots could be eyeing a similar usage for Giles-Harris considering the depth they’ve already built at linebacker.

It might not take long to see him in action, either, with the Patriots’ preseason opener against the Houston Texans slated for Thursday night at Gillette Stadium.

Giants working out 2023 USFL Offensive Player of the Year

The New York Giants hosted RB Mark Thompson, the 2023 USFL Offensive Player of the Year, as part of their Monday workouts.

With training camp just around the bend, the New York Giants will hold workouts at the Quest Diagnostics Giants Training Center on Monday.

Among those in attendance will be running back Mark Thompson, who earned 2023 USFL Offensive Player of the Year honors this past spring as a member of the Houston Gamblers. He shared word of his visit on Twitter.

The 28-year-old Thompson signed with the Baltimore Ravens as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2018. He quickly turned into a journeyman, making stops with the New York Jets, Detroit Lions, and Las Vegas Raiders before entering the USFL this year. He also had a brief second stint with the Ravens in 2019.

In eight games (seven starts) for the Gamblers, Thompson rushed 653 yards and scored 14 touchdowns while adding 90 yards as a receiver. He was second in the league in rush yards and first in rushing touchdowns.

Thompson’s workout has nothing to do with the Saquon Barkley contract situation.

In addition to Thompson, free agent linebacker Joe Giles-Harris is also expected to work out for the Giants on Monday.

Giles-Harris, 26, signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars as an undrafted rookie out of Duke in 2019. He spent his first two seasons with the Jags before joining the Buffalo Bills in 2021 when both current Giants general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll were still with the team. He was released by the Bills in late January.

In 17 career games (three starts), Giles-Harris has recorded 26 tackles (14 solo, two for a loss), five QB hits, and one sack. He’s a talented special teams player who earned a 78.3 Pro Football Focus grade a season ago.

Others also working out on Monday: Rookie linebacker Kyahva Tezino and defensive tackle Kevin Atkins.

The Giants are expected to hold a second round of workouts later this week.

Bills sign 10 players to reserve/future contracts for 2022

#Bills sign 10 players to reserve/future contracts for 2022:

The Buffalo Bills made what is often the first transaction a team will make following the conclusion of their season that was.

The team announced that 10 players were signed to reserve/future contracts for the 2022 season.

Those are:

  • DT Brandin Bryant
  • G Jacob Capra
  • WR Tanner Gentry
  • LB Joe Giles-Harris
  • DB Tim Harris
  • WR Isaiah Hodgins
  • DE Mike Love
  • DB Nick McCloud
  • TE Quintin Morris
  • DB Josh Thomas

Of this group, Bryant and Giles-Harris saw playing time in backup and special teams roles for the Bills on two game days this season. Hodgins appeared in a handful of snaps in one outing.

McCloud was active for two games but those came with the Cincinnati Bengals. At the end of training camp, McCloud, a UDFA signing by the team, was cut by Buffalo. Cincy then claimed him on waivers but he made his way back to Orchard Park eventually.

A reserve/future contract guarantees that a player cannot be signed by another team. The deal goes into effect once the new league year begins and will count towards the next season’s salary cap and 90-man roster for the offseason and training camp.

The deals are typically signed for the league minimum without a signing bonus attached.

Instant analysis: Bills kickoff preseason with dramatic win vs. Lions

Instant analysis: #Bills kickoff preseason with dramatic win vs. #Lions (via @jdiloro):

The Buffalo Bills brought as much drama as possible to a preseason game, besting the Detroit Lions, 16-15, in Week 1 of preseason action. Buffalo ruined Dan Campbell’s head coaching debut for the Lions, as Tyler Bass’s 44-yard field goal with 19 seconds left ended up being the difference.

The first exhibition game for the Bills game gave an opportunity for several depth players to flash their skills and challenge for a depth spot on the roster. Buffalo rested several starters, including Josh Allen, Stefon Diggs, Emmanuel Sanders, Jerry Hughes, Tremaine Edmunds, Matt Milano, Tre’Davious White, Jordan Poyer, and Micah Hyde.

The good news: Many of the reserves who should make Buffalo’s final roster kept Detroit off-balance when they were on the field. In particular, the Bills defense limited any meaningful progress by the Lions offense in the first half. When this group was pushed back, they still refused to concede a touchdown.

The Lions managed only three points in the first half, as kicker Randy Bullock completed an 18-play drive with a 28-yard field goal. Levi Wallace made a nice play in the end zone to deny progress as the Lions entered the red zone.

Offensively, the Bills made a commitment to the run game in the first half. Devin Singletary carried eight times for 42 rushing yards, while Matt Breida ran 10 times for 27 rushing yards. Meanwhile, quarterback Mitchell Trubisky threw only two passes in a quarter of work, completing one for 10 yards. With Buffalo’s receiving room basically set entering the season, the Bills could place an emphasis on the run game in the first half.

Singletary scored the Bills’ only touchdown in the game. The third-year pro was on the receiving end of a play-action pass, where he found the end zone with no resistance from the Lions defense.

While the night seemed to drag on, the fourth quarter became very interesting. As several deep roster players took the field, the Bills defense started to falter, allowing the Lions to claw back into the game.

The tackling of this unit was questionable at best. A massive swing occurred in one segment of the fourth quarter, as a Nick McCloud pick-six was overturned as an incomplete pass. On the play, Olaijah Griffin was flagged for a personal foul, setting up Detroit in good position for their first score of the game.

Craig Reynolds weaved his way through Buffalo’s defense for a 24-yard rushing touchdown. The Bills responded to negate the Lions two-point conversion, still giving Buffalo a 13-12 lead.

Buffalo’s offensive line had some struggles in the closing of the game, leaving Jake Fromm little time to throw. The Bills punted away, giving Detroit an opportunity to take the lead.

Lions quarterback David Blough responded with two big passes on the subsequent drive, completing a 35-yard pass to Javon McKinley and a 29-yard pass to Tom Kennedy. Kicker Randy Bullock was successful on a 28-yard field goal to give the Lions their first lead of the game, 15-13.

As they have done many times before, the Bills rallied their squad to mount a comeback. Even with third and fourth stringers, Buffalo’s offensive depth found a way to pull off the revival. On fourth down, Jake Fromm found Marquez Stevenson for 25 yards to extend the drive. From there, Fromm kept things under control, slowly moving the team into field goal range. From there, a Tyler Bass 44-yard field goal put the Bills in the lead for good.

Several players made the most of their opportunities on the field. Davis Webb showed that he could guide the offense, going 11-of-16 for 90 passing yards and one touchdown pass. Webb added 26 rushing yards on two scrambles. Fromm’s late-game response in the face of pressure was impressive. Singletary’s game gave some confidence in the run game. Stevenson’s performance on the final drive will keep him in the conversation for a depth receiver.

On the defensive side of the ball, Andre Smith seemed to be everywhere, leading the Bills in tackles with eight in the game. Cam Lewis followed with seven tackles. Joe Giles-Harris also made his presence known with six tackles.

First-round draft pick Gregory Rousseau was as advertised, recording his first sack in the NFL, albeit in the preseason. He recorded three pressures on 11 snacks. More impressively, his sack came against Penei Sewell, the No. 7 overall draft pick this year.

Tyler Bass showed that he is automatic, making all three of his field goals, including a 50-yard bomb in the first quarter and the game-winner from 44 yards out.

Overall, the Bills had a nice start to their 2021 campaign. Most of the mistakes that occurred were by players who were not threatening to make the 53-man roster, so all in all, this result is just what Buffalo needs to get the ball rolling for a successful season. It took the entire roster to seal this victory for Buffalo.

Bills sign Joe Giles-Harris after minicamp tryout

Buffalo Bills sign linebacker Joe Giles-Harris after rookie minicamp tryout.

The Bills had invited five players with NFL experience to their rookie minicamp this weekend to tryout for the team. Of those, one impressed: Joe Giles-Harris.

The linebacker inked a one-year deal with the Bills. The team announced his signing on Sunday.

Giles-Harris appeared in nine games with the Jaguars last season, making two starts. In those games, he notched 21 tackles, two for loss and a sack. Pro Football Focus was also a fan of his, as the football analytics outlet graded him a 75.6 overall last season.

Giles-Harris did not meet the minimal requirements to rank in PFF’s overall linebacker grading chart, but his 75.6 mark would have slotted him as their eighth-best linebacker in 2020 if he had met that threshold.

The 6-foot-2, 234-pound Giles-Harris also played in 39 percent of the Jaguars’ special teams snaps last season despite only seeing action in nine contests.

That might be the best route for him to make the Bills’ final roster in training camp as the linebacker room is a packed house currently in Buffalo.

Behind starters Tremaine Edmunds and Matt Milano, the Bills still have AJ Klein and Tyler Matakevich, along with the likes of Andre Smith, Tyrel Dodson, and three other offseason signings: Marquel Lee, Tyrell Adams and Mike Bell.

LB Joe Giles-Harris among 4 released by Jags

The Jags had to get their roster back to the offseason minimum after the draft and decided to release four players.

The Jacksonville Jaguars started Tuesday off with some post-draft transactions, releasing linebackers Joe Giles-Harris and Nate Evans, and defensive backs Nate Meadors and Doug Middleton. The moves come as the Jags added nine draft selections and some undrafted free agents, but needed to get their roster back to the minimum number of players allowed on an offseason roster (90).

Of the group, Middleton was the most experienced and 2020 marked his fifth season. He initially joined the Jags (for a second stint after being with them in 2019) through their practice squad in September. He ultimately played in 10 games for the team and was able to garner nine total tackles.

Giles-Harris was probably the most significant contributor as he made strides in 2020. He started in three games for the Jags in 2020 and was able to accumulate 20 total tackles. Giles-Harris also was able to register a Pro Football Focus grade of 75.6, which was the highest on the team though he only took 205 defensive snaps. That said, his release could be a simple case of the Jags moving to a new defensive system.

Meadors, who was a second-year player and Evans, who was an undrafted rookie last season, didn’t get to take any snaps with the team. They both were on the Jags’ practice squad last season though Meadors was activated against the Minnesota Vikings.

Jags make several roster transactions before Week 10 game vs. Packers

The Jags made several elevations from their practice squad in preparation for the Green Bay Packers.

The Jacksonville Jaguars made a wide variety of roster transactions Saturday in preparation for Sunday’s game against the Green Bay Packers. That included the elevation of four players from their practice squad.

With linebacker Dakota Allen and receiver Laviska Shenault Jr. being ruled out on the final injury report, the Jags utilized their two standard elevation spots on Joe Giles-Harris and Terry Godwin.

Giles-Harris has spent most of his Jags tenure on their practice squad after joining them last season as an undrafted free agent. In 2019, he was activated for five games, registering a bulk of his snaps on special teams. He also was active for the Jags’ last game against the Houston Texans where he registered more snaps on special teams.

As for Godwin, this will be his first activation from the practice squad since joining the Jags last season.

The Jaguars also decided to activate offensive lineman KC McDermott and safety Doug Middleton from their practice squad.

Sunday’s game will mark McDermott’s third time on the active roster as he participated in the Jags’ games against the Miami Dolphins and Cincinnati Bengals. He registered a few special teams snaps in the process but didn’t see the field for any offensive plays.

Middleton, on the other hand, will be participating in his fourth game of the season after playing in the Jags’ games against the Bengals, Los Angeles Chargers, and Houston Texans (Week 9).

Lastly, the Jags activated safety Andrew Wingard from injured reserve and kicker Chase McLaughlin from the commissioner’s permission list.

Wingard’s addition isn’t a surprise after he was designated to return from IR earlier in the week. He started in three games this season for the Jags before going on IR before Week 6’s game against the Detroit Lions and will return with 25 tackles and a pick to his name.

As for McLaughlin, he was signed to the roster earlier in the week to replace Josh Lambo, who is out for the season with a gluteus medius injury. McLaughlin, a second-year player, will come into his tenure with the Jags with a 78.3% field goal conversion rate (18-of-23) and a 100% extra point attempt rate (26-of-26). He previously spent time on the active rosters of the Indianapolis Colts, Los Angeles Chargers, and San Francisco 49ers.
