Bills work out two offensive lineman after Brandon Shell retires

#Bills work out two players after Brandon Shell retires:

It appears the Buffalo Bills are looking to fill the spot they recently lost on their offensive line rather than using that roster space elsewhere.

On Tuesday, 31-year-old offensive lineman Brandon Shell retired from the NFL. Shell had recently played in Buffalo’s 23-19 preseason win over the Indianapolis Colts and had a realistic look at cracking the Bills’ final 53-man roster but decided to hang ’em up instead.

The team didn’t need to use that roster space to sign another tackle, but it looks like it’s trending that way in Buffalo. According to the NFL transaction wire, the Bills worked out two offensive tackles early this week: Quinton Barrow and Garrett McGhin.

Barrow is a Division II prospect from Grand Valley State. He went undrafted in 2023 and would be considered more of a project piece.

McGhin would likewise be a project, but a more experienced one. He has only appeared in two NFL games, but has jumped around the league.

McGhin entered the NFL with the Bills in training camp in 2019 after going undrafted. McGhin then bounced around various practice squads and training camps with the Carolina Panthers, Jacksonville Jaguars, and New York Jets. He also spent time in the XFL.

Report: Bills’ Brandon Shell intends to retire from the NFL

Report: #Bills’ Brandon Shell intends to retire from the NFL

It was one and done in the preseason for Brandon Shell on the Buffalo Bills.

According to multiple reports including The Athletic, the 31-year-old was not at practice on Tuesday. The reason is reportedly because he is set to retire from the NFL.

Shell signed in Buffalo this offseason. He was battling the likes of David Quessenberry and Tommy Doyle for the swing-tackle job behind starters Spencer Brown and Dion Dawkins.

In the Bills’ 23-19 preseason win against the Indianapolis Colts over the weekend, Shell first appeared in the game with the second-team offense.

In 2022, Pro Football Focus graded Shell a 64.9 overall mark for his efforts when he featured in 13 games for the Miami Dolphins.

In addition to Shell’s retirement, the Bills also lost the likes of Tommy Doyle in the Colts matchup due to a knee injury. However, Doyle’s injury was later downplayed by Buffalo head coach Sean McDermott.

The Buffalo Bills needed to make room to add one of their recent signings. The happened via Brandin Bryant.

The team announced on Thursday that the defensive tackle was released by the team.

That news comes shortly after offensive lineman Brandon Shell signed in Buffalo. But Shell, 31, could not officially be placed on the roster until the Bills made room since the team was already at the 90-man roster limit.

Bryant, 29, has bounced around the NFL in his career. After signing as an undrafted rookie in 2016 with the Seattle Seahawks, he has since played for the New York Jets, Cleveland Browns, Miami Dolphins, and Houston Texans.

Bryant has also had two stints in Buffalo already. There’s always a chance down the line he could be added to the roster again during training camp or to the practice squad during the upcoming season.

During his career, Bryant has appeared in 11 total games. Seven of those have come over three seasons with the Bills.

The Buffalo Bills have reportedly added some experience to their right tackle position on the offensive line.

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, free-agent lineman Brandon Shell is set to sign in Buffalo.

The 31-year-old played last season with the Miami Dolphins. Pro Football Focus graded Shell a 64.9 overall mark for his efforts in 2022, when he appeared in 13 games for the Dolphins.

It’s unclear what Shell’s role would be with the Bills. However, on paper, he reads as potential competition for incumbent starter Spencer Brown at right tackle.

Prior to adding Shell, Brown had little standing in his way to retain his starting spot despite his 51.4 grade from PFF last season. Brown started in 14 games for Buffalo in 2022.

While the Bills front office has publicly backed Brown, citing back injuries for his inconsistent play at times, it still makes sense to bring in competition. Even if Shell does not push Brown for a starting spot, he still adds experience.

Shell was a fifth-round pick of the New York Jets in 2016. He then jumped to the Seattle Seahawks from 2020-2021 before heading to Miami last offseason.

Former Dolphins offensive lineman signing with Bills

He started 11 games for Miami in 2022.

[connatix div_id=”3f8b015acdd24c648befc5d5dac47469″ player_id=”afe1e038-d3c2-49c0-922d-6511a229f69c” cid=”7cbcea0d-4ce2-4c75-9a8d-fbe02a192c24″]

The Miami Dolphins had over 30 players that were set to hit the free agent market this offseason, but they’ve done a great job retaining a large number of them for the 2023 season.

However, one player who won’t be returning for another year in aqua and orange is offensive tackle Brandon Shell, who’s reportedly signing with the Buffalo Bills.

Shell, 31, signed with Miami’s practice squad last September after the season had already begun. He was elevated to the active roster for Week 6 before being signed to the active roster late in October.

The former fifth-round pick started 11 games for the Dolphins in 2022 due to injuries to both Austin Jackson and Terron Armstead, as well as the poor performance of Greg Little, who was already on the active roster.

It’s interesting that Mike McDaniel and Chris Grier didn’t bring him back to at least compete with Austin Jackson, Isaiah Wynn and Cedric Ogbuehi for the right tackle job this upcoming year, as he looked solid in his starts last season.

For 2023, Shell, like former Dolphins wide receiver Trent Sherfield, will now join Miami’s AFC East rivals, who are the favorites to win the division once again. He’ll likely be fighting for a roster spot in Buffalo, but he’s a veteran with starting experience, and that’s valuable.
