9 Giants who aren’t going to make the 53-man roster

The New York Giants must trim their roster to 53 men by 4:00 p.m. ET on Tuesday and these nine players simply aren’t going to make the cut.

The New York Giants will wrap up the preseason this Saturday night against the New York Jets and then trim their roster down to the required 53 players on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. ET.

There are many obvious locks to make the 53-man roster and there are a fair share who are certain to be sent on their way. It’s the limited men in the middle who face uncertain and uneasy futures.

Those of us at Giants Wire have already broken down many of the guarantees to make the cut, but now we’re going to look at those who aren’t.

Here are nine Giants who will almost certainly receive their walking papers on Tuesday.

11 Giants who need to finish the preseason strong

The 2023 NFL preseason is entering its final days and these 11 New York Giants players need to finish strong or risk losing a roster spot.

The New York Giants must trim their roster down to 53 players by 4:00 p.m. ET on August 29, so the upcoming preseason game against the New York Jets might be the last time some of these players don a Giants uniform.

There are at least 11 players who need to finish the preseason on an uptick so that they can either a) secure a roster spot or b) a place on the Giants’ 16-man practice squad.

Let’s take a look.

7 Giants on the roster bubble heading into second preseason game

Here’s a look at seven (of many) New York Giants players who are on the roster bubble headed into Week 2 of the preseason against Carolina.

The New York Giants host the Carolina Panthers in the middle preseason game at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey on Friday night.

Jobs are on the line and several players will have to display that they are serious about making the 53-man roster, which will be cut in less than two weeks.

Here are seven players (of many) who are on the roster ‘bubble’ and need to have a good showing in this game.

Giants agree to terms with DT Brandin Bryant

The Giants have agreed to terms with free-agent DT Brandin Bryant.

The New York Giants have agreed to terms with 29 year-old journeyman defensive tackle, Brandin Bryant, the team announced on Monday morning.

The length and financial terms of the deal for Bryant, who recently worked out for the Giants, was not disclosed.

The six-foot-two, 305-pound Bryant has spent time with several NFL teams since going undrafted out of Florida Atlantic back in 2016, including the Seattle Seahawks, New York Jets, Cleveland Browns, Miami Dolphins, Houston Texans and Buffalo Bills, as well as two CFL clubs.

Bryant appeared in four games with the Bills last season, recording three tackles while seeing snaps on both defense (74) and special teams (11). He was released by Buffalo last month.

Bryant comes into a crowded defensive line room that contains some heavy hitters such as Dexter Lawrence, Leonard Williams, A’Shawn Robinson and Rakeem Nunez-Roches, as well as veteran Vernon Butler, Ryder Anderson, D.J. Davidson, rookie Jordon Riley and recently signed free agent, Kobe Smith.

Bills release Brandin Bryant to make room for Brandon Shell

The Buffalo Bills needed to make room to add one of their recent signings. The happened via Brandin Bryant.

The team announced on Thursday that the defensive tackle was released by the team.

That news comes shortly after offensive lineman Brandon Shell signed in Buffalo. But Shell, 31, could not officially be placed on the roster until the Bills made room since the team was already at the 90-man roster limit.

Bryant, 29, has bounced around the NFL in his career. After signing as an undrafted rookie in 2016 with the Seattle Seahawks, he has since played for the New York Jets, Cleveland Browns, Miami Dolphins, and Houston Texans.

Bryant has also had two stints in Buffalo already. There’s always a chance down the line he could be added to the roster again during training camp or to the practice squad during the upcoming season.

During his career, Bryant has appeared in 11 total games. Seven of those have come over three seasons with the Bills.

Bills re-sign Brandin Bryant to the practice squad

His release earlier this week could have been a sign from the #Bills:

Brandin Bryant’s rotation with the Bills has taken another turn this week.

On Monday, the team announced that offensive lineman Ike Boettger was activated to the 53-man roster form the PUP list. Bryant was released in order to make room for Boettger.

But Bryant isn’t going far as he has since re-signed with the club via their practice squad.

Bryant spent training camp with the Bills but was cut at the end of the summer. He eventually returned… multiple times.

At one point he was let go and signed by the Texans in early November. Then once he was released there, Bryant was brought back by the Bills once more.

Round and round we go, but Bryant is back on the team’s taxi squad.

Bryant being taken off the active roster this week was likely a sign of something more. Fellow defensive lineman Jordan Phillips (shoulder) was sidelined for two games.

Phillips has been back at practice this week ahead of the team’s matchup with the Bears (3-11). One could anticipate Phillips being back in the lineup, which made Bryant initially expendable.

Bills activate Ike Boettger from Reserve/PUP list

#Bills activate Ike Boettger from Reserve/PUP list:

The Buffalo Bills welcomed Ike Boettger back to their offensive line and roster.

On Monday, the Bills (11-3) announced that Boettger has been activated from the team’s Reserve/PUP list.

Boettger had been on the injury designation for almost a year exactly. In Week 16 last season, Botteger suffered an Achilles injury. He had surgery and his season was over.

Now, Boettger is back on the 53-man roster ahead of Buffalo’s upcoming contest against the Chicago Bears (3-11)… in Week 16 of this year.

During the Bills’ 32-29 win against the Miami Dolphins, Ryan Bates did not play due to a calf injury. Bates originally got his starting job last season when Boettger went down.

It’s unclear if Bates will play against the Bears. Buffalo’s coaching staff might have to make a decision between the two… unless Mitch Morse does not play.

Morse is in the concussion protocol. If he can’t go, Bates would likely move to Morse’s center spot and if Boettger can play, he’d go in at guard.

In a corresponding move, defensive tackle Brandin Bryant was released.

Bills release Marquez Stevenson to make room for Cole Beasley

#Bills release Marquez Stevenson to make room for Cole Beasley:

In a surprise, Cole Beasley has returned to the Buffalo Bills.

On Tuesday, the team announced that Beasley was added to the practice squad and it’s expected that he could be called up to the active roster pretty quickly.

However, the Bills (10-3) had to make room for that transaction. The corresponding move came in the form of Marquez Stevenson as the team announced he had been released from their practice squad.

Stevenson has had a journey in recent weeks with the team.

Last week, Buffalo released him. He was let go on the same day his 21-day injured reserve window ended. The Bills previously designated Stevenson to return from IR and had to make a choice and decided to release him in hopes they could get him back on their practice squad.

That exact scenario unfolded… and the Bills eventually ended up letting Stevenson go anyway to make room for Beasley.

Stevenson, a 2021 sixth-round draft pick, had foot surgery in August after a training camp injury. His release turns some heads because Buffalo also has the likes of KeeSean Johnson and Tanner Gentry on their practice squad–Both wideouts.

The Bills still opted to release a former draft pick over them. Perhaps Stevenson had not yet progressed from his injury as the team had hoped.

In addition to the creative receiver moves, Buffalo made a switch at defensive tackle. Brandin Bryant, who was previously with the Bills and signed by Houston this season was released by the Texans last week. Bryant has since signed to Buffalo’s roster and CJ Brewer was released to make room for him.

Former Bills defender Brandin Bryant signs with Texans

Former #Bills defender Brandin Bryant signs with #Texans:

Former Buffalo Bills defensive end Brandin Bryant has landed with another team.

Last week in a slew of moves which included cornerback Tre’Davious White being added to the team’s 53-man roster, the Bills (6-2) released two players. One was Bryant.

A week later, the Houston Texans signed him to their practice squad.

In heading to Houston, Bryant reunites with former Bills defensive end Jerry Hughes who signed with the Texans this offseason.

A big pull for Hughes (along with Houston being his hometown), was the Texans’ defensive line coach.

Houston’s D-line coach is Jacques Cesaire. He previously was Buffalo’s assistant defensive line coach.

In addition to Bryant departing, receiver Isaiah Hodgins was released at the same time. He ended up landing with the New York Giants.

Texans release DL Derick Roberson from practice squad, sign DL Brandin Bryant

The Houston Texans released DL Derick Roberson from their practice squad, but added DL Brandin Bryant, who has familiarity with Jacques Cesaire.

The Houston Texans are still tinkering with their personnel on the practice squad as they prepare to take on the New York Giants in Week 10.

The Texans released former Sam Houston State defensive lineman Derick Roberson from the practice squad. Houston activated Roberson for one game in the 2022 campaign. Previously the Texans signed Roberson to the practice squad on Sept. 8. The former San Antonio Brennan High School product played 17 games for the Titans from 2019-21, starting in one of them.

The Texans also signed former Florida Atlantic defensive lineman Brandin Bryant to the practice squad. Bryant previously spent the past three seasons with the Buffalo Bills, playing six games for the AFC East club, which gives him familiarity with Texans defensive line coach Jacques Cesaire.
