Georgia Southern vs UAB Game Preview

Why Georgia Southern Will Win

How’s the Clay Helton era going so far?

All Georgia Southern did over the first two weeks was go 2-0, hang 144 points on the board, come up with the most yards ever by an opponent in Lincoln, Nebraska – 642 – and became the proverbial last straw for the Scott Frost era with the Huskers.

The program known for its dangerous running game is winging it all around the yard with former Buffalo QB Kyle Vantrease going off. and now the offense rolls into Birmingham to make UAB try to keep up.

UAB turned it over four times in the loss at Liberty, the defense hasn’t been a rock so far, and …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 3

Why UAB Will Win

The Blazer pass defense has been fine.

Alabama A&M wasn’t able to do anything, Liberty never got into a groove, and now the team should be settled in at home. The D has been great so far on third downs, the rushing offense should be good enough to keep the Eagle offense on the sidelines, and the pass rush should be a problem for Vantrease.

The Blazers might not be flashy so far offensively, but they’ve been solid. As long as they don’t fumble like they did against Liberty, they should be able to keep up.

Week 3 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Is Georgia Southern really that amazing?

It’s second in the nation in total offense behind Minnesota, the offensive line has yet to allow a sack, and moving the chains hasn’t been a problem. The team was able to handle Nebraska on the road, so can UAB be that much more difficult?

Yeah.

The Blazer defense will rise up with a brilliant performance, the offense won’t turn it over like it did against the Flames last week, and the Bryant Vincent era will get its first big win by controlling the clock and generating more pressure than Georgia Southern has seen so far.

Behind Enemy Lines: Cornhuskers Wire previews No. 6 Oklahoma at Nebraska

To prepare for Oklahoma vs. Nebraska, we go Behind Enemy Lions with Cornhuskers Wire.

From 1921 to 1997, the Oklahoma Sooners and the Nebraska Cornhuskers met annually in a game that was once one of the better rivalries in college football.

When the Big 8 and members of the Southwest Conference merged to form the Big 12, the two teams would still play regularly until the Cornhuskers left for the Big Ten in 2012. After over a decade, OU and Nebraska renewed the rivalry in a defensive 23-16 win for the Sooners last season.

Now the Oklahoma Sooners will make their first road trip to Lincoln since their 10-3 loss in the 2009 season.

Sooners Wire had a chance to catch up with Cornhuskers Wire’s Evan Bredeson to get a little more up close and personal vantage point of the 2022 version of the Nebraska Cornhuskers!

Where do the Oklahoma Sooners land in ESPN’s FPI after win over Kent State?

After a crazy weekend in college football, where did the Sooners rank in the latest ESPN Football Power Index?

The second week of the season provided upsets galore as several Sun Belt conference teams knocked off traditional powers on a day where seemingly no team was safe.

Texas A&M lost to Appalachian State while Marshall knocked off Notre Dame. Both teams entered the week inside the top 10 in the USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll. They were huge upsets, all things considered.

Georgia Southern also pulled off an upset, at least in historical terms. Nebraska hasn’t been good for some time, and this loss was the culmination of several years of poor program development under Scott Frost.

The Texas Longhorns nearly pulled off what would have been the shock of the weekend in their 20-19 loss to Alabama. They had a lead in the final minutes before Bryce Young did Heisman winner things for Crimson Tide kicker Will Reichard to nail the game-winning field goal with less than 20 seconds to play in the game.

USC picked up a big win in Lincoln Riley’s Pac-12 debut, beating the Stanford Cardinal 41-28 behind a fantastic day from Caleb Williams.

With everything that transpired over the weekend, let’s take a look at how the latest ESPN Football Power Index looks and where the Oklahoma Sooners rank.

The Football Power Index (FPI) is a measure of team strength that is meant to be the best predictor of a team’s performance going forward for the rest of the season. FPI represents how many points above or below average a team is. Projected results are based on 20,000 simulations of the rest of the season using FPI, results to date, and the remaining schedule. Ratings and projections update daily. FPI data from seasons prior to 2019 may not be complete. – ESPN

Georgia Southern delivers devastating blow to Scott Frost, Nebraska

Georgia Southern shocked Nebraska in Lincoln

Just call him Scott Lost.

The flame under Nebraska football coach Scott Frost’s hot seat is raging after the Cornhuskers fell to Georgia Southern, 45-42, on Saturday.

There has been speculation Frost could be coaching for his job on Sept. 17 when Oklahoma comes to town. Now, one has to wonder if someone else could lead the Cornhuskers against the Sooners.

Georgia Southern was 3-9 last season and is coached by Clay Helton. In a bit of irony, Helton is approaching the one-year anniversary of when he was fired by USC after a terrible home loss to Stanford.

The winning drive took 11 plays and covered 75 yards in 2:29.

Kyle Vantrease scored on an 8-yard run. Vantrease threw for 409 yards.

Nebraska’s Timmy Bleekrode missed a 52-yard field goal on the final play of the game and Frost was 5-22 in one-score games. Overall, he is 16-31 with the Cornhuskers.

The game-winning march happened after Nebraska benefited from a couple of lengthy reviews to take the lead.

The march took around 5:58 minutes and covered 98 yards. The Cornhuskers needed reviews twice before they scored on a short run by Casey Thompson.

Backup QB Logan Smothers rushed for 10 yards. Georgia Southern appeared to recover a fumble by the Cornhusker but the eyes in the sky said Smothers was down before he lost the ball.

Later in the drive, Marcus Washington was ruled to have lost control of a reception near the goal line. After another review, the call was overturned and Nebraska had the ball at the 1.

Thompson scored on the second play after the second review.

Mobile ticketing problems plague Notre Dame, other programs

This system is flawed.

I’ve never liked mobile ticketing. Sure, it’s more technologically efficient and environmentally friendly, but I’ve never liked it. Taking paper tickets away robbed fans of physical memories of being at games, and that just doesn’t sit well with me. Teams already were moving away from it before COVID-19 hit, but that ensured that it was going away and never coming back.

I’ve always worried that something would happen that would cause the whole idea of mobile ticketing to backfire. For instance, someone’s battery might drain right before they reach the gate. If nothing else, someone having to restart their phone for whatever at the front of the gate would cause a long line of people waiting to get in.

Well, it happened ahead of Notre Dame’s home opener against Marshall:

While the Irish did come up with a solution before the system eventually was restored before kickoff, I only can imagine the lines this caused:

If this doesn’t convince teams that mobile ticketing without a backup system ready to go immediately doesn’t work, nothing will. I hate that so many fans are being inconvenienced in a way that is entirely avoidable. And it’s not only the fans at Notre Dame Stadium. Look where else it happened:

Nebraska vs Georgia Southern Game Preview

Why Georgia Southern Will Win

This is not your older brother’s Georgia Southern team.

New head coach Clay Helton wanted to change things up a bit, and while the running game will still play a big role, the passing attack is about to get going.

In came Buffalo transfer Kyle Vantrease, and at least for one week, everything clicked as he threw for 367 yards and four touchdowns in the blowout win over Morgan State.

Nebraska’s defense is far, far better, but it’s still shaky, it got pounded on by Northwestern’s ground game, and overall it took a little too long to put North Dakota away in a 38-17 win.

Georgia Southern will move the ball better than the Fighting Hawks did, and they ran for over five yards per carry.

CFN Expert Picks, Week 2

Why Nebraska Will Win

Again, Nebraska might be struggling, but it’s not Morgan State.

If might be a tough go so far in the 1-1 start, but the Huskers found an explosive runner in Anthony Grant, QB Casey Thompson has been strong in spurts, and it has to keep being said, even though no one wants to hear it – it’s EARLY.

The Huskers have the parts to be far better, but they’re still looking like a team getting the timing down. Georgia Southern isn’t going to be great against the run – Grant and the ground attack should have a nice day – and everything should be fine as long as …

Week 2 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

The Nebraska turnovers have to stop.

They were an issue against Northwestern, and the two against North Dakota didn’t help. The Huskers don’t have to be perfect, but they’re getting killed whenever there’s the slightest momentum shift.

Fortunately, controlling the game on the ground – and getting to Vantrease with the pass rush – should help take care of that.

Clay Helton faces Nebraska’s Scott Frost in the 2022 ‘hot seat classic’

It’s the coach #USC just fired, pitted against the coach the #Huskers might soon fire. You know Trojan fans are going to be interested in this game.

The Georgia Southern Eagles debuted their new offense with a 59-7 win over Morehead State last weekend. Former USC Trojan head coach Clay Helton is trying to find his footing in Statesboro, Ga. Against Morehead, Georgia Southern quarterback Kyle Vantrease tied a school record with four touchdown passes.

The Buffalo senior transfer completed 29 of 46 passes for 367 yards with 4 touchdowns and 1 interception.

Clay Helton and the Eagles aren’t running the triple option offense, unlike their predecessors. They have gone to a pro style up-tempo offense, so expect a different approach this season.

Helton couldn’t win big in the Pac-12, except when he had Sam Darnold at USC. He will try to do better in the Sun Belt Conference at his new home.

Now all eyes turn to Nebraska this weekend. Clay Helton against Scott Frost is a game USC fans are going to have fun with. It’s the coach USC fired against the coach Nebraska could soon fire.

This is Nebraska’s first matchup with Georgia Southern.

The Huskers are 1-1 coming into this game. Some might consider them lucky to even be 1-1 instead of 0-2. After blowing a double-digit lead and losing to Northwestern on Aug. 27, Nebraska got all it could handle from North Dakota last weekend but eventually won 38-17.

I think Georgia Southern can stay close in this game, especially with all the Nebraska turnovers we have seen this year, but I expect Scott Frost to beat Clay Helton 38-24 on Saturday in Lincoln.

The game starts at 4:30 p.m. for Los Angeles viewers on Fox Sports 1.

Georgia Southern vs Morgan State Game Preview

Why Morgan State Will Win

The Bears return a veteran team with experience on the lines to hold up a bit.

Georgia Southern is in a redo in the new Clay Helton era. It needs the new parts to fit right away, the offensive line has to prove it can start doing something consistently right, and the defense that finished 110th in the nation has to try to get better without a whole lot of experience.

However …

Week 1 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Georgia Southern Will Win

Morgan State has to prove it can score.

It’s losing a slew of skill parts, but that’s not a huge deal consisting the offense struggled to get anywhere near 300 yards per game and only scored more than 20 points once.

Georgia Southern might be in reboot mode, but enough players are there to be okay through the chances, and there’s almost no real threat of getting into a firefight.

A few early scores should do it.

Sun Belt Preseason Predictions For Every Game: Preview 2022

Sun Belt predictions for every team and every game in the 2022 college football season

The Sun Belt just got a whole lot more interesting with the addition of Marshall, Old Dominion, and Southern Miss from Conference USA – and getting them a year before it seemed possible – and also brought in FCS powerhouse James Madison to a be a part of the fun.

The divisions are staying for now, but the great additions will make it far, far tougher for Appalachian State, Coastal Carolina, and Louisiana to keep on dominating – even though they might not take that big a step back, if any.

While it might seem a bit cut-and-dry with the way the league is set up, watch out for some potentially big moves from some teams that struggled. The problem will be the schedules for Troy, South Alabama, and Arkansas State. Georgia State and Old Dominion programs that got to bowl games last season will have to fight, too.

The Sun Belt is stronger than ever and the season should be the best yet. The Sun Belt predictions for 2022 are …

Georgia Southern Eagles Preview 2022

Clay Helton was hardly awful at USC.

A good guy who everyone liked – you don’t survive a 5-7 season at that place if you rub people the wrong way – he won a Pac-12 title, won a Rose Bowl, and it wasn’t nearly enough for a program that demands College Football Playoff consideration.

He knows how to get an offense going, and now he gets to tweak a Georgia Southern program that also rightly expects success – albeit on a different scale.

The Eagles came into 2021 with three straight winning seasons and bowl appearances, but the O couldn’t get going, the losses kept rolling, and in comes Helton to change all of that.

With eight starters back on offense, six back on D, and with what should be one of the Sun Belt’s better kicking games, things should bounce back fast.

Georgia Southern Eagles Preview 2022: Offense

The offense has been in a pivot from the triple option style for a while, but now the new coaching staff really will adjust a bit more with a spread style that incorporates even more of a balance. Whatever it’s going to be, it has to work a whole lot better than the version of last year that struggled to average 20 points and 340 yards per game.

The running game wasn’t good enough, the passing game wasn’t efficient, and now it all has to be better with eight starters back.

The hope is for Buffalo transfer Kyle Vantrease to add a steady veteran presence. The sixth-year quarterback can run, but he’s more of a passer who can do a little of everything. The Eagle quarterbacks combined to throw for five touchdown passes and 12 picks – Justin Tomlin is gone, but Cam Ransom isn’t a bad No. 2 option to work around.

The receivers are in place to help. The emphasis wasn’t on the passing game so the numbers weren’t amazing, but Khaleb Hood led the way with 35 catches and 442 yards, and there’s just enough speed around to hit more deep plays. Three of the five touchdown catches went to TE Beau Johnson, a 6-1, 225-pound junior who needs to be a featured target.

The running backs need more room to move. The Eagles have high-powered runners who should average over five yards per carry. Leading rusher Logan Wright is gone, but juniors Gerald Green and Jalen White combined for over 800 yards, nine touchdowns, and 5.6 yards per pop.

The offensive front that couldn’t generate a push and allowed way too many plays behind the line gets back just about everyone around all-star guard Khalil Crowder.

Georgia Southern Eagles Preview 2022: Defense

The defense tried to help the cause, but it wasn’t great against the run and finished 110th in the nation overall. It’s not as experienced as the offensive side, but six starters are back with just enough upside to be a whole lot stronger under the new coaching staff.

The line should be the early strength. Sixth year senior Justin Ellis returns after tying for the team lead with five sacks. Combined with veteran Dillon Springer, the Eagles have the ends.

Now they need the tackles to form a solid rotation with good interior pass rusher CJ Wright gone off the nose.Size and bulk will be an early issue, but 300-pound former North Carolina transfer Kristian Varner should help.

The linebacking corps went young last season, and now it should pay off. Eldrick Robinson is gone to Wake Forest, and Michael Edwards is off to East Carolina. There was next to nothing happening in the backfield from the outside linebackers – that’s about to change under the new staff – but the inside guys have to emerge.

The secondary has to be far, far better. It will be thanks to the return of star CB Derrick Canteen, one of the best defensive players in the Sun Belt who missed most of last year with a torn pectoral muscle.

Leading tackler Anthony Wilson is back at one safety spot after making 78 tackles, and versatile Justin Birdsong returns for a fifth year after finishing fourth on the team with 49 stops.
