Dawn Staley thanks Vivian Stringer and Pat Summitt for elevating her coaching

Dawn Staley continues to schedule Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference teams and she explained why after a win against Morgan State.

South Carolina head coach Dawn Staley continues to schedule Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference teams, and she explained why after a win against Morgan State on Wednesday.

She believes playing against these programs makes both teams better.

“When I was at Temple, we couldn’t get a top team to play us besides Rutgers and Tennessee,” Staley said after the game. “Those were really the only two coaches who gave us an opportunity because it would hurt them more than it would hurt us. We were an upcoming program that we could challenge you. We could challenge the top teams in the country.

“I’ll always remember what Coach Vivian Stringer and Coach Pat Summitt did for us in giving us an opportunity to measure ourselves against some of the best legendary coaches and also the traditionally rich history of their programs. It allowed me to grow as a coach, and it allowed our program to grow at Temple University.”

While the Gamecocks defeated Morgan State, 104-38, Staley said the score didn’t indicate how much Morgan State challenged her squad. She even went so far as to say she would incorporate a few of their plays into her rotation going forward. Staley also praised Morgan State’s head coach, Ed Davis Jr., for his coaching abilities and how he runs the program.

“I always try to schedule people who are elevating or trying to elevate their program, move their program in the right direction,” Staley said.

The Gamecocks’ next game is Dec. 10 against Utah at 1:30 p.m. CT.

Georgia Southern vs Morgan State Game Preview

Why Morgan State Will Win

The Bears return a veteran team with experience on the lines to hold up a bit.

Georgia Southern is in a redo in the new Clay Helton era. It needs the new parts to fit right away, the offensive line has to prove it can start doing something consistently right, and the defense that finished 110th in the nation has to try to get better without a whole lot of experience.

However …

Week 1 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Georgia Southern Will Win

Morgan State has to prove it can score.

It’s losing a slew of skill parts, but that’s not a huge deal consisting the offense struggled to get anywhere near 300 yards per game and only scored more than 20 points once.

Georgia Southern might be in reboot mode, but enough players are there to be okay through the chances, and there’s almost no real threat of getting into a firefight.

A few early scores should do it.

What’s Going To Happen

This is the exact type of team you want to schedule as a warm-up before going to Nebraska.

Georgia Southern will be far better this season, but it needs this game to try out all the new ideas and get a good rotation going. Morgan State won’t bring much resistance.

People couldn’t get over the excessive number of 3-point lines in MEAC championship game

For those watching the MEAC Championship, they couldn’t help but get distracted by the excessive number of 3-point lines on the court.

With March Madness upon us, it’s championship week in college basketball where some teams will be looking for one last push to punch their ticket into the NCAA tournament while others await their bracketed fate.

There was plenty of exciting action on Saturday with the Big Ten, SEC, Big 12 and Pac-12 all playing some big games. But the MEAC also hosted its championship game between Norfolk State and Morgan State, where Norfolk State won 71-63 and secured a spot in the NCAA tournament.

But for those people watching the MEAC Championship, they couldn’t help but get distracted by the fact that were an excessive number of 3-point lines on the court at Norfolk Scope Arena.

The court at Norfolk Scope Arena has four separate 3-point lines for high school, men’s college, women’s college and NBA. But it was still awfully distracting, especially for those on the court.

At one point, the refs had to review one of the 3-pointers where a player had his toe on the NBA line, which was well behind the college line.

But considering Norfolk State and Morgan State combined 10-of-40 from behind the 3-point line — the actual 3-point line in this game — you can’t help but wonder if it was a tad confusing for the players, as well.

Report: Philadelphia Eagles to waive WR Manasseh Bailey

Eagles to waive WR Manasseh Bailey

As the Philadelphia Eagles work to reduce the roster to 53 players another wide receiver is set to be jettisoned, as Adam Caplan is reporting that Manasseh Bailey will be waived.

As a senior last fall for Morgan State, Bailey amassed 996 receiving yards and was also ranked third in the MEAC in touchdown catches (10), fourth in receptions (54), and sixth in overall touchdowns (11) en route to being named to the All-MEAC’s third team.
