Chargers re-shuffle coaching staff ahead of 2023 NFL draft

The Chargers announced two new hires and two promotions on their coaching staff on Wednesday.

The Chargers announced two additions to their coaching staff on Wednesday as well as two promotions. The team officially hired former Georgia Southern defensive coordinator Will Harris as an assistant secondary coach and Phil Serchia as an offensive assistant.

Harris was a standout at the collegiate level, helping to guide Georgia Southern to a 6-7 record last season despite adversity within the program. Serchia, on the other hand, is far less established, having coached last at Hutchinson Community College in Hutchinson, Kansas for the last three seasons.

In addition to the new hires, Mike Hiestand and John Timu were promoted to new positions as returning staff from last season. Hiestand will serve as the Chargers’ front-seven specialist on defense after previously coaching the team’s offense, and Timu is set to take over as an assistant defensive line coach.

These changes could prove to be critical moves as Los Angeles starts readying itself for their offseason program this spring, and should help as the team moves into the training camp and preseason processes later in the summer. How exactly each of these coaches will function within the team is, to this point, unknown, though head coach Brandon Staley certainly seems to have a clear direction for his staff as he looks to help the Chargers bounce back from a brutal end to their 2022 season.

Crimson Tide add former Nicholls State head coach Austin Claunch to the MBB staff

Nate Oats and Alabama MBB land a massive hire to join MBB staff

After maybe the best season in the history of the Alabama Crimson Tide basketball program, Nate Oats is back on the recruiting trail, but this time it’s for assistant coaches.

Oats and the Crimson Tide are in unprecedented waters after losing all three assistants from the 2022-2023 team to head coaching positions elsewhere. Charlie Henry departed for Georgia Southern, Bryan Hodgson to Arkansas State and Antoine Pettway to Kennesaw State. Oats’ staff was a key part of the Tide’s success this year, especially recruiting, and they will be greatly missed.

Fortunately, Oats is already on the move and making new hires to fill the three positions. Alabama is expected to add Nicholls State head coach, Austin Claunch, to the staff as an assistant. Claunch has been incredibly successful at only 33 years old, going 51-17 in conference play over the past four years with two league titles.

Joining the Tide is a very attractive position for all coaches after seeing them churn out three head coaches in one offseason. Oats will have some major changes to make to the roster, but he needs to get some help with the coaching staff first.

Clay Helton and Georgia Southern lose the Camellia Bowl to Buffalo

Helton finishes with a losing season in 2022. Georgia Southern fell to 6-7 with the #CamelliaBowl loss to the Buffalo Bulls.

Clay Helton defeated Scott Frost and got the former Nebraska coach fired in 2022. Helton, in his first year as Georgia Southern’s head coach, got the Eagles to a bowl game. Georgia Southern was 5-6 but won its 12th game to qualify for a bowl. The Eagles were able to make a relatively short commute west from their campus location in Statesboro, Ga.

The trip wasn’t ultimately successful.

Helton and Georgia Southern fell to the Buffalo Bulls, 23-21, in the 2022 Camellia Bowl on Tuesday in Montgomery, Ala. Georgia Southern scored a touchdown with 3:38 left to pull within two points, but Buffalo converted two third downs on its subsequent possession and managed to run out the clock.

Georgia Southern could have scored a touchdown in the first half for a 7-0 lead, but a receiver tripped in open space with no Buffalo defender near him at the 7-yard line. The Eagles subsequently were stopped in a goal-to-go situation and settled for a field goal. That was the most notable moment in a two-point loss which caused Helton and Georgia Southern to end their season with a 6-7 record. Buffalo finished 7-6.

Buffalo vs Georgia Southern Camellia Bowl 5 Things To Know

Camellia Bowl Prediction, What’s Going To Happen, History

Get ready to hear the name Kyle Vantrease a whole lot. Good at Buffalo over his five years, he transferred to Georgia Southern and helped change up the program under head coach Clay Helton.

All of a sudden, the Eagles went from being known for its option offense to finishing fourth in the nation in passing. It was a grind late in the year, but a wild 51-48 win over Appalachian State – with 389 yards from Vantrease – booked the bowl ticket.

Buffalo has done okay for itself without Vantrease, too – even if it took a LOT of work to get here. It started 0-3 – including a Hail Mary loss to Holy Cross, won five straight, lost three straight, and it was out of the mix after the Akron game was postponed thanks to a blizzard. It was a dogfight, but the 23-22 Bull win was enough to get bowl eligible.

This just the sixth bowl game in Buffalo history. It’s actually the seventh, but the 1958 team turned down its invitation to the Tangerine Bowl. The program lost its first three bowls starting in 2008, but under now-Kansas star coach Lance Leipold it won the last two in 2019 and 2020 – the latter the Camellia against Marshall.

It’s the fifth bowl for Georgia Southern, winning three of the four since making the first appearance in the 2015 GoDaddy. The last appearance was a dominant 38-3 blasting of Louisiana Tech in the 2020 New Orleans.

– The Camellia Bowl has been in a few different locations over the years, but it’s now settled in at Montgomery. It’s also been one of the most consistently awesome bowl games over the last eight seasons with the first seven all decided by eight points or fewer before Georgia State blasted Ball State 51-20 last year.

CFN Experts Dec 20-27 | CFP NY6, Dec 28-Jan 2

Why Buffalo Will Win The Camellia Bowl

The defense has to crank up the takeaways.

The offense is too inconsistent and the special teams are awful, but the defense knows how to force mistakes.

For all of the good things Georgia Southern does, it’s got a problem when it starts turning the ball over. It’s 2-3 when giving it away multiple times – and the two wins were by the skin of its teeth in shootouts. UB takes it away in bunches with four or more turnovers forced in four games.

If that doesn’t work, it’s all about controlling the clock.

No, Buffalo’s offense isn’t great, but at least it operates with a deliberate pace to stay in control. Georgia Southern doesn’t care about that, moving quickly to keep defenses on their heels. There’s going to be a problem if the Eagles work fast and make mistakes, but …

Why Georgia Southern Will Win The Camellia Bowl

With a few rare exceptions, this isn’t the type of Buffalo team that did a good job of keeping up in shootouts. It could score here and there, but it was just 2-6 when it didn’t come up with more than 31 points and 1-6 when allowing more than 27.

The Georgia Southern offense has the ability to turn out the lights in a hurry if it comes up with a few early scoring drives. The offensive line is fantastic at keeping defenses out of the backfield – that’s partly because of the pace of the attack – and the offense keeps on cranking up yards through the air.

Buffalo is 0-3 when giving up 283 passing yards or more. Georgia Southern got there in every game but four.

Georgia Southern at Louisiana Game Preview

Why Georgia Southern Will Win

Can the Eagles get bowl eligible?

They’re one win away, and to get there they need the high-powered offense to roll with a big day from the passing game.

Not surprisingly, they’re 4-0 when they’ve had their four best offensive outputs of the season – coming up with 470 yards or more in each of the four.

They’re amazing on third downs, the offensive line has been a rock in pass protection, and there’s just enough of a ground game to even things out to go along with the Sun Belt’s best passing attack.

Bowl Bubble: Every Team’s Bowl Situation

Why Louisiana Will Win

The Louisiana pass defense hasn’t been bad.

Overall the D has been a plus, making up for a few mistakes here and there with multiple takeaways. On the secondary’s worst day of the season – allowing 320 yards to Eastern Michigan – the defense came up with five takeaways in the win.

It all comes down to mistakes for the offensive side. There’s enough of a passing game to bomb away on the struggling Eagle secondary, and getting to 500 yards is a must against the nation’s third-worst defense.

As long as the Ragin’ Cajuns win the turnover battle everything will be fine, but …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Don’t give the ball away and everything will be fine for the home side.

Louisiana is 3-0 when it doesn’t turn the ball over and 1-5 when it does – Georgia Southern only come up with multiple takeaways three times.

At home, and in desperate need of pulling off a win to stay alive for a bowl game, it’ll hold up in a fun shootout.

Georgia Southern vs Old Dominion Game Preview

Why Old Dominion Will Win

That’s how it’s supposed to work.

The Old Dominion passing game was efficient in the 49-21 shocker at Coastal Carolina last week, but it was the ground attack that took over and dominated.

After not doing much of anything all year, everything worked with 324 yards – almost half of the season total – with Blake Watson ripping off 256 yards and three scores.

That isn’t how the ODU offense normally works, but against Georgia Southern’s run defense that gets gouged for 221 yards per game, the main man will get fed again.

NFL Expert Picks, Week 7

Why Georgia Southern Will Win

Yeah, Georgia Southern will see your 300+ rushing yards and raise you 578 against James Madison.

The Dukes had one of the nation’s best run defenses, so the Eagles didn’t even bother as Kyle Vantrease went off, three different targets went over 100 yards, and now it’s time to roll on an Old Dominion pass defense that’s getting lit up for a Sun Belt-most 278 yards per game.

The Monarchs bring the nation’s best pass rush, but it doesn’t translate into production in the secondary.

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Can this really be as fun as they were last week? Let’s hope so.

The Sun Belt has been crazy unpredictable this year – last week with both of these teams showed that – but both passing games have been rock steady.

Can Old Dominion really do that again on the ground? Even if it does, Georgia Southern can keep bombing its way out of it.

The Monarchs are better at forcing takeaways and the the Eagles buckle when they start giving it away.

Georgia Southern will convert its third down tries. Old Dominion won’t.

James Madison vs Georgia Southern Game Preview

Why James Madison Will Win

The run defense continues to be the best in the county.

Texas State was able to run for 106 yards, but that’s been it against a D that so far has allowed 205 yards in five games.

The Dukes are making a ton of plays in the backfield, the offense is dominating the time of possession battle, and everything is working on both sides of the ball.

Appalachian State is the only team to come close to taking down the new FBS program.

Georgia Southern wants to throw more than run, but the offensive side isn’t the issue. The worst run defense in the Sun Belt is the concern against an efficient JMU offense that hit 200 rushing yards against everyone but Appalachian State.

However …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why Georgia Southern Will Win

Georgia Southern’s offensive line has been terrific.

It’s solid for the ground game, the pass protection is as good as any team in the country, and the attack knows how to get things moving. Everything sets up perfectly for what the No. 1 offense in the Sun Belt does – run well enough, hit the third down opportunities, play with a good pace.

Last week the Eagles lost to rival Georgia State on turnovers – there were four picks to go along with a lost fumble. As amazing as James Madison’s defense is, it doesn’t come up with a ton of interceptions.

Limit the mistakes, control the lines, and have a shot because …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Other than Appalachian State, James Madison’s defense hasn’t faced anyone who’s all that dangerous. Georgia Southern has the offense to press and keep pressing.

However, the Eagles couldn’t get the win against a Coastal Carolina offense that control the tempo, and they’ve struggled overall against good passing teams. They’re allowing well over 300 yards in three of the last five games and gave up over 600 combined rushing yards in the other two against UAB and Georgia State.

James Madison’s defense will have a tough afternoon, but the offense will make up for it.

Georgia Southern vs Georgia State Game Preview

Why Georgia Southern Will Win

The offense continues to move the chains.

It’s fourth in the nation in third down conversions, averages 500 yards per game, and it’s versatile enough to keep things going in a variety of ways.

The passing game has been great, the ground attack averages 5.6 yards per carry, and it all starts with an offensive line that doesn’t allow anything in the backfield.

Georgia Southern leads the nation in fewest tackles for loss allowed and is second in sacks allowed.

Georgia State doesn’t come up with sacks and struggles to get behind the line.

NFL Expert Picks, Week 5

Why Georgia State Will Win

The Panthers finally got the season going with a terrific 31-14 win over Army. They played well over the first month but couldn’t force a break, and then it all worked with the ground game and takeaways finally getting it done.

Can they keep running on the Eagles? The Georgia State ground attack hit the 200 yard mark against everyone but Coastal Carolina, and Georgia Southern is allowing 5.4 yards per carry getting gouged a bit too much.

Georgia State doesn’t have a pass rush, but Georgia Southern really doesn’t generate pressure. Give QB Darren Grainger time and he’ll produce.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

This should be fun.

Both offenses know how to get the party moving, and both defenses are more than happy to keep the drinks cold.

Georgia State played well in the 0-4 start but turnovers in a few games, lots of penalties in others, and key misfires did it in. At home the running game will get off the bus with 200 yards, there won’t be enough turnovers to matter, and …

Georgia Southern vs Coastal Carolina Game Preview

Why Georgia Southern Will Win

The passing game got it back.

This isn’t the old Georgia Southern offense you’re used to. Gone are the days of the spread option running game, and in is a passing attack that uses some of the same principles, but can wing it around the yard.

The offense is 3-0 when hitting the 300-yard mark – getting to 310 passing yards last week in the win over Ball State – and the turnovers stopped.

Coastal Carolina might be playing well, but the pass defense can be thrown on. Georgia Southern is among the best in the nation in total offense – it leads the Sun Belt – and is great on third downs partly because of a good season so far from the line. But …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Coastal Carolina Will Win

Coastal Carolina can still make teams play its style.

This might not be the high-octane team of previous years, but it’s efficient, it’s still good at getting guys in space, and it’s also getting great line play.

Turnovers.

Yeah, the Eagles didn’t give the ball away against Ball State last week, but it only has one takeaway over the last three games.

Coastal Carolina leads the nation in takeaways with 14, getting 13 of them over the last three games. It’ll come up with a few, the offense will control things enough to make Georgia Southern press, and then more big defensive plays will follow.

Ball State vs Georgia Southern Game Preview

Why Ball State Will Win

The Cardinals might not be getting the offense going, but the defense has been making plays.

No one’s slowing down Tennessee, and the Western Michigan game was a shootout. The defense should be able to generate a slew of third down stops, and the other side should be able to control things at least a little bit.

The offensive line has been doing a great job of keeping defenses out of the backfield – the Cardinals are tied for second in the nation in tackles for loss allowed – the pass protection will be solid, and …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Georgia Southern Will Win

Georgia Southern is tied with Ball State in tackles for loss allowed.

The passing game suffered a hiccup in the loss to UAB, but the running game was fine, the offense has a balance, and the defense that kept the Blazer passing attack under wraps should be okay.

Even though the O didn’t do what it wanted, the chains kept moving. The Eagles are among the best in the country on third downs – they’re converting 62% of their chances – and they’re going to keep on bombing away, but …

What’s Going To Happen

Ball State is good at slowing down teams on third downs. It’s going to make this a battle.

The difference will be the home side of things. Georgia Southern will be a bit better in Allen E. Paulson. It’ll keep the penalties to a minimum – Ball State has a bigger issue with flags – and the offense will be just a wee bit more consistent.
