Nebraska’s Mickey Joseph: Michigan football is ‘what really good Big Ten teams look like’

10-0. #GoBlue

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Mickey Joseph, Nebraska‘s interim head coach, had an unenviable position on Saturday.

While the Huskers avoided Ohio State this year, they had to take on No. 3 Michigan, and got nothing going all game long. While the Wolverines weren’t making big, explosive plays, they leaned into their workmanlike mentality, grinding the game out in dominant fashion to win, 34-3.

After the game, Joseph noted that the maize and blue were simply superior.

“Well, first of all, I want to take my hat off coach Harbaugh and his football team,” Joseph said. “They’re a well-coached football team, and they’re a talented football team. And they played a really good game tonight.”

But what made Michigan so good against Nebraska? It all had to do with what the Wolverines were able to do in the trenches.

“They’re really good on the O-line and the defensive line. That’s what really good Big Ten teams look like,” Joseph said. “With the O-line and D-line, they move people and they get pushed back on defense. Was a really good football team.”

Nebraska entered the game with the No. 75 rushing offense in the country, but has shown the ability to run in recent weeks. It accumulated 163 yards against Oklahoma, 122 against Purdue and 146 against Minnesota, but the Wolverines held the Huskers to just 75 yards on the ground.

Joseph noted that Michigan collapses opened holes in the offensive front about as quickly as anybody.

“I thought it was better, I thought he was better but it wasn’t much room in there,” Joseph said. “We wasn’t getting much push off the line of scrimmage so just telling our backs once you get it, you see it, you gotta go because it’s not going to stay open very long. The credit to Michigan.”

Ultimately, Michigan was too much for Nebraska.

“They good in everything that they do, so it was a really solid football team,” Joseph said. “Teams that I’ve been on, really good teams, they would have hung in there. I don’t know if they would’ve won, but they would have hung in there.”

Up next, Michigan football hosts Illinois, which just lost to Purdue. After that awaits the big showdown with rival Ohio State.

What Nebraska interim head coach Mickey Joseph had to say about Michigan football

Some insightful things. #GoBlue

The Michigan Wolverines are coming off a dominating victory in Piscataway this past Saturday after defeating Rutgers, 52-17. The maize and blue remain perfect on the season sitting at 9-0.

The Wolverines will return to the Big House this Saturday. Michigan will look to remain unbeaten against an up-and-down Nebraska team. The Cornhuskers are sitting at 3-6 on the season and while Nebraska only has three wins, it has appeared at times to be a competitive team — other times not so much.

Scott Frost was fired after starting the season 1-2 and Mickey Joseph has coached the team ever since as the interim head coach. The Cornhuskers are 2-4 in conference play and Nebraska is hoping to pull off an incredible upset against a top-five opponent.

Mickey Joseph had his weekly press conference on Tuesday. Joseph talked about Michgian football and gave an update on the Nebraska quarterback situation.

Joseph mistakenly breaks NCAA rule in Tuesday press conference

Nebraska football interim head coach Mickey Joseph’s mouth may have acted faster than his brain did during a press conference on Tuesday.

Nebraska football interim head coach Mickey Joseph’s mouth may have acted faster than his brain did during a press conference on Tuesday.

The subject of Joseph’s mistake was Malachi Coleman, a 4-star recruit and the highest-rated recruit in the state of Nebraska who recently committed to the Huskers over the weekend.  Coleman is a senior wide receiver for Lincoln East High School.

During the press conference, a reporter interrupted Joseph’s answer to another question, saying “You got Malachi this weekend.” Seconds after the reporter apologized for interrupting, Joseph responded to the question.

“I’m just joking. You’re so uptight. But, no, right, we got Malachi.”

So is it a big deal?

According to an NCAA bylaw, a school “may not comment generally about the prospective student-athlete’s ability or the contribution that the prospective student-athlete might make to the institution’s team; further, the institution is precluded from commenting in any manner as to the likelihood of the prospective student-athlete committing to or signing with that institution.”

On Saturday, Coleman committed to the Huskers, but is not able to sign his letter of intent for the team until Dec. 21.

Joseph was understandably excited about Coleman’s commitment, smirking after his statement. When leaving the press conference, he asked Nebraska media relations workers if what he said was against the little-known NCAA policy. Shortly afterwards, Joseph contacted Nebraska’s compliance department to notify them of his error.

Joseph’s comment was far from a major recruiting violation, so major sanctions are not likely. Infractions are handled on a case-by-case basis and outcomes are typically decided within six to eight weeks.

“Some penalties, such as public reprimand and censure, are commonplace,” the NCAA’s infraction enforcement process states.

Joseph and the Huskers will face Illinois at home on Saturday, Oct. 29.

What did Nebraska’s interim head coach Mickey Joseph say about Rutgers football

Nebraska football head coach Mikey Joseph talks about Rutgers.

On Friday night, Rutgers football will host a Nebraska team that is hungry and in need of another win to continue what might just be a turn-around after a nightmare start to the season.

Saturday’s 35-21 win over Indiana was the first for the program under interim head coach Mickey Joseph. With the win, Nebraska is now 2-3 (1-1 Big Ten). They face a Rutgers team (3-2, 0-2 Big Ten) that has lost two straight games but is still halfway towards the needed win total for bowl eligibility.

The game will kick-off at 7 PM ET on FS1.

Joseph, during his media availability on Monday, was asked one question about Rutgers, namely what he has seen from the team on defense and on offense. He responded with the usual nod to Rutgers and head coach Greg Schiano being a tough and determined team.

“Rutgers has a really tough defense that’s really good against the run. I think they’ve only given up 292 yards or something like that per game,” Joseph told reporters this week.

“This is Schiano, if you know one thing about him, he’s going to have tough football teams. So it’s going to be a battle. It’s going to be a 9-on-7 drill.”

Coming off a bye week, the win over the weekend against Indiana was emotional and cathartic for the Cornhuskers. For the first time all season, Nebraska looked and played like the team that many people thought could challenge to be in the Big Ten Championship Game this season.

No. 6 Oklahoma at Nebraska: Sooners Wire Staff and expert predictions

Sooners Wire staff and expert predictions for the Oklahoma Sooners’ Week 3 matchup vs. Nebraska.

The Oklahoma Sooners (2-0) look to remain undefeated as they take to the road for the first time in the Brent Venables era. Oklahoma and the Nebraska Cornhuskers come into this matchup in very different positions.

Since last season’s 23-16 Sooners’ win, both teams have made coaching changes, and both Oklahoma and Nebraska have new quarterbacks leading their offenses.

Nebraska is hoping to rebound from a disappointing home loss to Georgia Southern. It allowed 45 points to their Sun Belt foe. Oklahoma is trending in a different direction, hoping to build off a couple of 30-point wins to start the season.

Returning to Memorial Stadium for the first time since their 10-3 loss to the Cornhuskers in 2009, the Oklahoma Sooners will have to have a better offensive showing than they did a year ago.

With an offense that can put up points in a hurry, look for the Sooners to shake off their poor first-quarter start and be more consistent from the opening kick.

As the Sooners get set to take on the Cornhuskers, check out our Sooners Wire Staff predictions as well as predictions from several national analysts as well.

Behind Enemy Lines: Cornhuskers Wire previews No. 6 Oklahoma at Nebraska

To prepare for Oklahoma vs. Nebraska, we go Behind Enemy Lions with Cornhuskers Wire.

From 1921 to 1997, the Oklahoma Sooners and the Nebraska Cornhuskers met annually in a game that was once one of the better rivalries in college football.

When the Big 8 and members of the Southwest Conference merged to form the Big 12, the two teams would still play regularly until the Cornhuskers left for the Big Ten in 2012. After over a decade, OU and Nebraska renewed the rivalry in a defensive 23-16 win for the Sooners last season.

Now the Oklahoma Sooners will make their first road trip to Lincoln since their 10-3 loss in the 2009 season.

Sooners Wire had a chance to catch up with Cornhuskers Wire’s Evan Bredeson to get a little more up close and personal vantage point of the 2022 version of the Nebraska Cornhuskers!

By the Numbers: No. 6 Oklahoma Sooners at Nebraska Cornhuskers

How do the Oklahoma Sooners and the Nebraska Cornhuskers stack up statistically heading into their matchup in Lincoln?

The No. 6 Oklahoma Sooners travel to Lincoln to take on the Nebraska Cornhuskers in the second part of a home-and-home series. Last year’s matchup in Norman featured a hotly-contested defensive battle as the two teams worked to slow down Spencer Rattler, now with South Carolina and Adrian Martinez, now with Kansas State.

In the early part of this season, the contest has the makings of a much different football game.

Both teams have scored more than 36 points per game and averaged more than 461 yards of total offense per game. While the two teams look like they’ll put up a bunch of points in this game, the game will still be decided by which defense can make more stops.

Statistically, it appears Oklahoma has the edge, but it hasn’t played a team that has been as productive offensively as the Casey Thompson-led Nebraska Cornhuskers.

To get you ready for Saturday, let’s take a look at these two teams by the numbers.
