Calvin Johnson, Shannon Sharpe among Georgia HS Football Hall of Fame inductees

The Georgia Football HS Hall of Fame announced 32 player on its 100-person ballot and the nine automatic inductees.

It’s been a long time coming: Georgia will have its own high school football hall of fame. Set to induct its inaugural class on Oct. 22, the HOF will include high school players and coaches from Georgia since the 1894 inception of the organized league, according to ScoreATL and the Georgia High School Football Historians website.

While the entire class is not yet clear, the Georgia High School Football Hall of Fame released the nine players who will be automatic inductions. All nine are members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

This group is made up of Calvin Johnson (Sandy Creek), Champ Bailey (Charlton County), Ray Guy (Thomson), Fran Tarkenton (Athens), Mel Blount (Lyons Industrial), Shannon Sharpe (Glennville, Richard Dent (Murphy), Rayfield Wright (Griffin) and Jim Parker (Ballard-Hudson), according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

On Thursday, the Hall announced this group and released the names of 32 of the 100 players who will be part of the first ballot that is voted upon. That group of 32 includes Heisman Trophy winners George Rogers, Herschel Walker and Charlie Ward.

I.J. Rosenberg, the executive director of the Georgia High School Football Hall of Fame, told AJC that these 32 players are not necessarily shoe-ins and the best candidates, but instead that they represent the entirety of the 100 because they are “a good mixture of what to expect when we finalize the nominee list.”

Of the 32, there were four players from each decade going back to 1950 and then four pre-1950. The rest of the 100 will be announced in June.

Top prospect Travis Hunter confirms: ‘I’m staying committed’ to Florida State

Travis Scott isn’t giving FSU fans anything to worry about: “Don’t let them boys fool y’all. I’m committed.”

Travis Hunter, the No. 1 player on 247Sports’ rankings and the No. 2 on their composite, had an answer to the questions about his commitment to Florida State:

He’s sticking by the Seminoles.

“I’m not going nowhere, bro. Don’t let them boys fool y’all. I’m committed. I’m staying committed,” he said on Instagram Live.

Hunter has been committed to Florida State since March 2020, but with the struggles of the Seminoles — three straight losing seasons and now an 0-3 start to 2021 after the loss to Wake Forest on Friday — some have expressed doubt that he will remain. When programs in general play poorly, whispers and rumors arise that top prospects may consider decommitting and going to a more likely contender.

This elite Collins Hill High School (Suwanee, Ga.) prospect said that it is not the case for him.

It’s a similar answer that he provided to The Athletic in April:

“I’m the longest commit for Florida State, and I’m trying to bring more players — more dogs — with me to Florida State to help them out. I’m doing my job and sticking with a commitment. Players don’t usually do that. They decommit or do something else. I want to show everyone that you don’t have to go to a top school to fit in. Florida State is still a top school, but they haven’t had good years in a minute.”

Last season, Hunter had eight interceptions, seven passes defended and 51 tackles on defense to go with 137 receptions, 1,746 receiving yards and 24 receiving touchdowns, plus 124 rushing yards on 19 carries on offense. The do-it-all athlete even completed two touchdown passes, going 2-for-4 with 84 passing yards overall.

Florida State has a gamechanger coming in. And there’s no indication that Hunter would go anywhere else.

Two Georgia HS football teams ranked among nation’s best

Two Georgia high school football programs have been ranked in the national preseason top 25 heading into the next season.

Two Georgia high school football programs have been ranked in the preseason top 25, per MaxPreps.

Checking in at number nine is Grayson High School of Loganville, Georgia. The Grayson Rams went 11-2 last season before falling 28-20 to Lowndes High School in the quarterfinals of the 7A state playoffs.

This season, Carlos Del Rio, a four-star Florida Gators commitment will be the quarterback for Grayson. He and four-star receiver Daejon Reynolds (also a Florida commit) will look to form an unstoppable duo in both high school and college.

Lowndes is ranked as the 12th team in the country heading into the 2020 season. The 7A school in Valdosta ended the year as a state finalist. They fell 17-9 to a loaded Marietta team in the state championship game.

There are plenty of other Georgia high schools that can enter the mix in 2020. High school football is much tougher to predict when compared to college football. There are so many teams and so many unknown players heading into every season.

Colquitt County High School, Marietta, Parkview and more will be among the contenders to be the top team in the state. Who do you think will end the season as the best team in Georgia?

Former Colquitt County (Moultrie, Ga) High School football coach Rush Propst is taking over as the new head coach of the Valdosta (GA) High School Wildcats, according to the Valdosta High Twitter account.

During Tuesday’s Valdosta Board of Education meeting, the board voted 5 to 4 to bring Propst to Valdosta.

While at Alabama’s Hoover High, he was featured in the MTV series “Two-A-Days.” Propst led Hoover to multiple state championships but an extramarital affair and recruiting allegations ended his time at Hoover.

In 2007, he moved to Colquitt and compiled a 119-35 record with two state titles. Prospt was fired last March after allegations of the misuse of school funds for a hotel and concerns about being verbally abusive to an athlete.

Valdosta is home to the winningest high school football program in the country with a record 911 wins. The Wildcats have won six national championships, 24 state championships, and 42 regional championships. Former Georgia lettermen Buck Belue, John Lastinger, Brice Hunter, Malcolm Mitchell, Todd Peterson, Jay Rome and James Eunice all graduated from Valdosta.

Valdosta plays at Colquitt County September 11 of the upcoming season.
