Ohio State football freshman Kayden McDonald loses black stripe

Black stripe alert! Ohio State has had as much success as anyone going into the deep south and luring some of the nation’s best to head north to Columbus. One of those from the 2023 class, Kayden McDonald, has been impressive during fall camp and has lost his black stripe.

McDonald is a Georgia native who grew up near Athens, home to the Georgia Bulldogs. However, the Dawgs were not a finalist in his recruitment. Ultimately, the big defensive tackle picked the Buckeyes over the likes of Florida, Michigan, Oklahoma, and Clemson who was actually thought to be the favorite to land the four-star prospect.

It sounds like the newest member of the Brotherhood is making an impact and making plays during fall camp. McDonald will add nice depth to a position group that will rotate guys in and out often during the season.

Top five true freshman defensive tackles in the Big Ten for 2023

Top five true freshman defensive tackles in the Big Ten for 2023 #GoBucks

It is always fun to look at recruiting rankings. The recruiting landscape receives more coverage every year because recruiting is a very important aspect of building a program. Still, it is important to remember these players and prospects are not defined by these rankings.

I was diving into the most recent class and trying to figure out which future Buckeye is going to shine brightest and fastest but noticed the Big Ten as a whole was pretty interesting recruiting-wise this cycle. We already dived into the quarterbacks, running backs, wide receivers, tight ends, offensive tackles, interior offensive linemen and edge rushers. Now, we dive into the top defensive tackles.

Ohio State football class of 2023 scouting report: Kayden McDonald #GoBucks

The Ohio State football recruiting class of 2023 is complete and despite some murmurs of negativity in the crowd, this class is fantastic from top to bottom. One of the studs of this class is a four-star recruit, defensive lineman from Georgia in Kayden McDonald.

McDonald is regarded as a top 260 recruit in the country and a top 35 defensive lineman in this class and will be looking to make an impact as quickly as possible for the Buckeyes.

Current Ohio State defensive tackles and their 247Sports rankings

Current Ohio State defensive tackles and their 247Sports rankings #GoBucks

The Ohio State football team has seven defensive tackles on scholarship and all were relatively high recruits based on their 247Sports recruiting rating. The interior of the defensive line showed flashes of excellence, but they were honestly a tad underwhelming. No one lived up to the hype and watching Georgia really showed how far that interior of the defensive line needs to develop to be elite.

Michael Hall was a guy who was receiving huge praise from the coaching staff and teammates, and was even compared to Aaron Donald but faded towards the end of the season. Hero Kanu was just a true freshman last season, but it is only a matter of time before a player of his size is forced to see the field. Tyleik Williams is another player who showed flashes of brilliance but also had stretches of non-existence. Enough speculation though, let’s dive into the rankings of these studs.

Signing Day Superlatives: Which Ohio State signees will have major impacts

This class is has a ton of talent #GoBucks

For most of the recruiting world, Christmas used to be in February. That all changed when the early signing period was introduced. It is much closer to the actual holiday, and on Wednesday recruits who have been committed to their respective schools can finally make it official.

For [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag], it once again signed a top recruiting class, headlined by multiple players who could have gone anywhere in the country to play football.

There are plenty of impact players all over this class, and I took a crack at which ones will make what kind of impact during their Ohio State careers.

Where each 2023 Ohio State football recruit landed on 247Sports updated rankings

It’s no surprise that this class is ranked as one of the best in the country. #GoBucks

When you assemble one of the top-rated recruiting classes in the country, you are bound to have plenty of players who are among the highest-rated in the nation. That is exactly the case for Ryan Day and his Ohio State Buckeyes football program.

The evidence is here, as 247Sports has updated their Top 247 recruits and it is littered with Buckeye commitments. In total there were twelve future OSU stars that made the list with room to add a few more before the early signing period and the traditional signing day in February. Find out below where each of those 12 verbal commits landed in the updated rankings.

BOOM! Ohio State gets commitment from four-star defensive lineman

Ohio State gets commitment from Georgia native to bolster 2023 recruiting class. #GoBucks

It’s been a while since Ohio State landed a commitment on the defensive side of the ball. That changed today when the Buckeyes learned that four-star defensive lineman Kayden McDonald has committed to Larry Johnson and OSU.

McDonald picked Ohio State over Clemson, Florida, Michigan, and Oklahoma. Clemson was thought to be the early leader but the Buckeyes made a late surge to sway the Suwanee, Georgia native to head to the 614.

When asked why he picked the Buckeyes, McDonald started with the coaches saying “It starts with Coach Day. Coach Day is one of the best coaches in college football. Coach Johnson, he develops and is great at development. He has as great a resume as any other coach in college football. Coach Knowles, new edition and he has that defense right, now.”

This is a nice pickup for Ohio State which has been focusing on the defensive line to close out the 2023 recruiting class. McDonald gives Larry Johnson and the Buckeyes three commitments on the D-line at this point with room to add more.

Damon Wilson is another who seems to be leaning toward OSU and should be announcing soon. Ohio State recently received another crystal ball prediction to land Wilson. The Buckeyes are still in play for Matayo Uiagalelei and Keon Keely as well.

Things could get very interesting for Ohio State as it looks to round out another top-rated recruiting class.

Clemson defensive tackle target commits elsewhere

A Clemson defensive tackle target in the 2023 class has committed elsewhere.

Suwanee (Ga.) North Gwinnett four-star Kayden McDonald announced his verbal pledge to Ohio State on Monday evening.

McDonald (6-2, 325) chose the Buckeyes over his other finalists in Clemson, Florida, Michigan and Oklahoma.

Clemson extended an offer to McDonald in late May, and he made an unofficial visit to campus for the Syracuse game on Oct. 22. At that time, all signs pointed to a commitment to the Tigers, but things can change quickly in recruiting and that was the case with McDonald’s recruitment.

Ohio State and Oklahoma both made recent visits to North Gwinnett to see McDonald play, and the Buckeyes ended up coming out on top for his commitment.

McDonald is ranked as high as the No. 195 overall prospect in the 2023 class by Rivals, which considers him the nation’s No. 8 defensive tackle in his class.

Although Clemson missed out on McDonald, the Tigers still hold commitments from three of the nation’s top defensive tackles in Alabaster (Ala.) Thompson five-star Peter Woods, Warner Robins (Ga.) four-star Vic Burley and Rome (Ga.) four-star Stephiylan Green.

Gators hoping to land this 4-star DT on Halloween

Could the Gators bounce back on the recruiting trail tonight by landing this four-star defensive tackle?

Four-star defensive tackle [autotag]Kayden McDonald[/autotag] will decide his future this Halloween.

The North Gwinnett (Suwanee, Georgia) product plans to decide among Florida, Clemson, Michigan, Ohio State and Oklahoma on Monday night around 6 p.m. EDT, according to Gators Online.

The On3 Recruiting Prediction Machin favors the Tigers with a 56.4% odds to land him and the Buckeyes are the clear No. 2 with 34.0% odds. Florida’s chances dip down to 2.1%, but we’ve seen bigger recruiting surprises happen over the last week.

McDonald has been to Gainesville at least four times this year, most recently on Oct. 8 for the Missouri game. His official visit to the Swamp came over the summer during the month of June.

Defensive line coach Sean Spencer is the lead man in McDonald’s recruitment, but he’s mentioned [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag] and [autotag]Patrick Toney[/autotag] as other key players.

“I love Florida,” McDonald said when releasing his top 5. “The academics, staff, it’s the SEC, and there are big games every Saturday in the Swamp. Coach Napier is building his team one player at a time. Coach Chaos coming from the NFL is a technician. We are real close. I’m comfortable with coach Chaos, coach Reid, coach Chaney, coach PT and pretty much all the staff.”

McDonald would join a defensive line class that’s fairly stacked already. Florida has six four-star defensive linemen and edge rushers under verbal commitment, meaning McDonald would have plenty of competition at his spot.

The On3 Consensus ranks McDonald as the No. 299 overall recruit in the class of 2023 and No. 40 among defensive linemen. 247Sports has him a bit high on the site’s individual rankings at No. 229.

McDonald says this is the reason Clemson is ‘high on my list’ after visit

Top defensive line prospect Kayden McDonald spoke to The Clemson Insider in a follow-up interview following his visit to Clemson on Oct. 22.

The four-star defensive lineman from North Gwinnett (Suwanee, Ga.) indicated to The Clemson Insider that he was “close to a decision” prior to his visit to Death Valley. McDonald’s official college decision announcement is expected on Monday, Oct. 31, which means it was imperative that the Tigers made a lasting impression on the class of 2023 target.

McDonald, who has garnered offers from Clemson, Florida, Michigan, Oklahoma and Ohio State, among many others, expressed that he wanted to experience the atmosphere of Death Valley and the locker room culture.

After the visit, McDonald indicated to TCI why Clemson would be high on his list.

“Yes, I kind of really love Clemson,” he said. “Opportunity to win a National Championship with my childhood best friend since the playpen has Clemson high on my list. Also, to play with my high school teammate too. It’s close to home.”

After the visit, the 6-foot-3, 310-pound senior indicated that the experience lived up to the hype he expected.

“Had a great time being around the staff, the fans,” he said. “I was with my friend since the playpen when we were little, [Clemson cornerback commit] Avieon [Terrell]. The atmosphere was crazy electric and the locker room was too lit.”

Prior to his visit, McDonald had never met coach Dabo Swinney, which was something he looked forward to doing on Saturday. He wanted to see if the family culture Clemson is known for would stand true during his visit.

“Yes, I talked to the whole staff,” he said. “Meeting with coach Swinney was good.”

After a thrilling win for the Tigers against the Orange, the prospect gave his reaction to the game.

“Insane, they kept fighting and won the game,” he said.

When he reflected on the visit in its entirety, he described his experience after the game as “surreal.”

“Whole visit was lit,” he said. “Probably standing in the middle of the field seeing all the fans was surreal.”

With his college decision announcement on the horizon, the four-star defensive lineman left Clemson with a good perspective of the culture that symbolizes Swinney’s football program.

The Clemson Insider would like to thank Kayden McDonald for sending us the picture.
