What the CFP selection committee taught us: Wisconsin to the Rose Bowl?

Let’s look at all the takeaways from the College Football Playoff selection committee’s second-to-last rankings of the season.

The College Football Playoff selection committee made no changes among its one-loss teams this week–aside from the obvious drops by Alabama and Minnesota, who no longer have only one loss. The pecking order of the remaining undefeated and one-loss teams stayed exactly the same as it was last week, which means that we don’t know too much going into next week.

Conventional wisdom dictates that Georgia and LSU both get in if Georgia wins. Looking at the resumes explains why LSU is likely still in with a loss. No other contender (aside from Ohio State and Georgia) has anywhere close to the collection of wins that LSU has.

Meanwhile, the committee gave us no real indication as to how much of a lead Utah has over Oklahoma and Baylor. Rob Mullens told us there was a lot of conversation about those three teams, which indicates that the lead isn’t so big. Is it big enough to survive the fact that the Big 12 champion will pick up another superior win this weekend? Does how dominant the win is matter? No one knows, but we’ll likely find out on Sunday.

The Rose Bowl

Assuming that Ohio State is in the College Football Playoff, there is still a little intrigue as to who goes to the Rose Bowl from the Big Ten. Wisconsin, at No. 8, currently sits two spots ahead of Penn State. The committee has shown a tendency to not punish conference championship game losers too much. It also has a tendency to not punish teams that lose to elite teams. Case in point, Michigan dropped only one spot this week after being eviscerated by Ohio State. That’s great news for Wisconsin, which can’t afford to drop more than one spot if it loses to Ohio State again. (If the Badgers beat Ohio State, they will be in the Rose Bowl–unless they get enough chaos to reach the CFP.)

On the Pac 12 side, the Rose Bowl picture is pretty simply. It will most likely be Oregon appearing in the game. The Ducks could win the Pac 12 Championship Game and reach the Rose Bowl. If Oregon loses, though, there is still a chance that Utah reaches the CFP, in which case Oregon goes to the Rose Bowl. If Utah wins but cannot crack the Top 4, then the Utes will be playing in the Rose Bowl.

Kirby Smarts praises staff, players for stifling UGA defense

Kirby Smart credits his staff and players for UGA football’s incredible defense.

It’s no secret that the Georgia Bulldogs have one of the, if not the best defense in all of the college football landscape.

After holding the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets to just seven points in the final regular season game, head coach Kirby Smart was quick to deflect praise from himself to the rest of the team when discussing the team’s dominant defense.

“I give tremendous credit to the coaches on our staff, I don’t take credit for that myself just because I’m a defensive guy,” Smart said.

“I think our coaching staff, [Dan] Lanning, [Glenn] Schumann, Charlton [Warren] and Tray Scott have done a tremendous job.

“Our players have done a tremendous job of working hard, buying in.”

The players will have to continue to buy in and put forth their best effort of the season if the Dawgs have any chance of slowing down the offensive juggernaut from the Bayou on Saturday.

Decade in review: How Georgia football performed against rivals

From the beginning of the 2010 to 2019, the Georgia Bulldogs posted over a .500 winning percentage against each of their rival programs.

We’ve reached the end of college football’s 2019 regular season. From the beginning of the 2010 regulation schedule to the culmination of the current year’s, the Georgia Bulldogs posted a .500 or better winning percentage against each of their rival programs.

The Dawgs won eight and lost two against in-state rival Georgia Tech, earning the past three Governor’s Cups in a row.

They went 8-3 vs. Auburn, including a victory in the 2017 SEC Championship Game, winning the past three meetings consecutively.

They posted a record of six wins and four losses vs. Florida, also winning three meetings in a row.

The Bulldogs went 8-2 in matchups against Tennessee, again with three successive wins.

Georgia’s worst rivalry record of the decade comes against South Carolina. The Bulldogs split 10 games against the Gamecocks, accumulating five wins and five losses.

The Georgia Bulldogs clinched the SEC Championship Game two weeks ago in Auburn and now, it’s finally time for the main event. Georgia and LSU for a spot in the College Football Playoff and bragging rights that will last a lifetime.

Week 14 CFP Implications: Chalk or chaos?

With just one week remaining in the college football season, we can look at the likely Playoff participants based on the outcomes.

A wild college football weekend saw the second Iron Bowl win by Auburn in the last three years. This time, though, it means that we will have a College Football Playoff without Alabama for the first time ever. We also saw Ohio State once again blow out a Michigan team expected to be competitive.

So, where does this leave us in the College Football race? We have five potentially meaningful games next week, though depending on how the other games go, the ACC Championship Game might not mean much. Let’s break down the stakes in each of the conference championship games. But first, let’s talk about what makes life simple for the committee.

The chalk scenario

There is only one real case of chalk this upcoming week. That would be championship game wins by Ohio State, LSU, and Clemson. As long as that happens, three Playoff spots are locked up. If Oregon wins, then the Big 12 champion is the fourth team. If Utah beats Oregon (especially if it’s by a wide margin), then we’ll have a two-team bubble of Utah and the Big 12 champion. The second case might be a tough choice for the committee, but at least it’s simple, clear-cut, and involves picking only one out of two teams. Any other scenario, and the committee is stuck sifting out three or more teams for at least the final two spots. That could be messy in a lot of ways, though considering Ohio State and LSU as virtual locks might make things easier. We can’t say any of that for sure until we see the games, though.

On Saturday, Georgia freshman wide receiver George Pickens sat out the first half of the Georgia Tech game for what Kirby Smart described as a ‘team matter.’

When he returned in the second half, he made a splash, catching a 41 yard touchdown pass from Jake Fromm.

But that was the only good thing that came from Pickens playing in the rivalry game on Saturday. He and Georgia Tech defensive back Tre Swilling got into it in the end zone and eventually end up exchanging punches with each other. Swilling hit first, twice, including one to Pickens’ throat.

 

Following the Tech game, Georgia players discussed the Pickens incident.

“That’s a huge lesson for him to not have him do something dumb like that,” linebacker Monty Rice said. “He’s a vital part of the team, vital part of the offense. You see how productive he is. He’s just gotta be smarter.

Ain’t no way around it. Ain’t no woulda’, coulda’ shoulda’. All you have to do is not throw a punch or slap or whatever it was. You just have to be smart.”

Pickens will be suspended for the first half of Georgia’s SEC Championship Game vs LSU. Additionally, the Bulldogs’ top receiver Lawrence Cager underwent ankle surgery this past week will not play. That is huge news seeing as how Jake Fromm has struggled this season without his top receivers out there. Dominick Blaylock and Tyler Simmons, who commented below, will be the go to guys.

“There’s always going to be some chippy talk and a chippy game like this between two rivals,”  Simmons said. “But you can’t let that get to you.”

Remember that last touchdown Georgia scored against Georgia Tech Saturday to hang half a hundred on the Jackets?

You know, the one that made this guy put a bag back on his head?

Well, if you weren’t at the game or you hit the exits for a head start on traffic, you missed one epic fail by the Jackets.

Georgia Tech, the so-called engineering school, decided to blast ‘Kernkraft 400’ from the stadium speakers in the middle of a play and well, it didn’t go as planned.

Whether this was planned out or just an accident, the Jackets fumbled a Jake Camarda punt in the end zone, which Tyson Campbell fell on for the Georgia touchdown.

This put the Dawgs over the magic number of 50, officially locking up the biggest beatdown in the game’s history for the good guys.

If you weren’t in Bobby Dodd Saturday, it was probably the funniest sequence you’ll ever see.

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp hands Governor’s Cup back to the Bulldogs Saturday at Georgia Tech

The Georgia Bulldogs won their third straight game over Georgia Tech Saturday, to bring the Governor’s Cup back to Athens for at least another year.

Governor Brian Kemp, a Bulldog grad and longtime fan, had the privilege of presenting the trophy to Georgia for the first time in Atlanta.

Take a look.

Sure, there might be more to play for next week, but this is still pretty awesome. Enjoy the journey, right?

Georgia football running back Brian Herrien celebrates beating Georgia Tech the right way, with class

Brian Herrien, the senior running back who’s done everything right in Athens, went out on top against the Yellow Jackets Saturday.

Not only did Herrien finish his Bulldog career 3-1 against Tech, but also the classiest player on either side of the rivalry behind the scenes.

When everyone else was boarded up on the buses to head back to Athens, Herrien stayed as long as he could at the gates, smiling and taking pictures for fans after scoring a touchdown earlier in the game.

The former three-star from Douglasville had just celebrated beating Tech on the field and was forced to get on the bus, after making young fans’ days for several minutes at Bobby Dodd Stadium.

However this season ends, we’ll always be grateful for Brian Herrien and are grateful he is a Dawg!

George Pickens to miss first half of SEC Championship Game

Georgia freshman WR George Pickens will be suspended for the first half of next week’s SEC Championship Game against LSU in Atlanta. 

Following a less-than-civil confrontation in today’s beating of the Bees, Georgia freshman wide receiver George Pickens will be suspended for the first half of next week’s SEC Championship Game against Louisiana State in Atlanta.

Kirby Smart confirmed the suspension in his post-game press conference following a 45-point win at Georgia Tech.

Jim Coley’s offense will already be without the injured Lawrence Cager, who leads the team with 476 receiving yards in 2019.

Pickens is only 19 yards behind with one fewer reception (32) and one more touchdown (5) than Cager.

The freshman out of Hoover, Alabama was previously suspended for the first half of today’s game against Georgia Tech for a “team matter” upon which Kirby Smart would not elaborate.

Missing two of the biggest deep threats on the roster, the Bulldogs offense will need to get creative in the first half of the looming conference championship.
