Tennessee attorney general mentions ‘Georgia Lamborghini’ when criticizing NCAA

‘Nobody bats an eye at a Georgia Lamborghini’

Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti filed an antitrust suit against the NCAA on Jan. 31 over its name, image and likeness licensing recruiting ban. Skermetti’s decision to sue came on the heels of the NCAA’s investigation into the University of Tennessee for NIL recruiting violations across multiple sports.

State representatives from both Tennessee and Virginia have brought the matter to the federal level in a joint lawsuit, alleging the NCAA’s name, image and likeness regulations violate federal antitrust law. Skrmetti strongly believes UT has been unfairly singled out in these allegations.

Skermetti thinks the NCAA is trying to get “payback” for the Vols avoiding a postseason ban in the sanctions given after the Jeremy Pruitt case. When explaining his idea of how unfairly Tennessee is being targeted, Skermetti brought up Georgia quarterback Carson Beck’s recent purchase of a Lamborghini Urus Performante. The car is valued upward of $270,000.

“This is a pick-and-choose situation as far as I can tell – where nobody bats an eye at a Georgia Lamborghini but anything that UT does appears to come under significant scrutiny because the school tried to defend the rights of its athletes when it was scrutinized before (in the Pruitt case).”

The NCAA is investigating UT for name, image and likeness violations in recruiting prior to enrollment. That’s not the case for Beck; he’s a rising senior.

This situation is still in the beginning stages, but it’s clear the state of Tennessee and the university aren’t going down without a fight — or reaching to find similarities among other programs that ultimately don’t hold weight.

Vols defeat Norfolk State for 10th win of season

Tennessee basketball defeats Norfolk State.

No. 5 Tennessee (10-3) defeated Norfolk State (9-7), 87-50, Tuesday at Food City Center.

The Vols led, 43-18, at halftime, closing the half on a 15-0 run.

Tennessee scored its last points of the first half on a three-point field goal by Santiago Vescovi, the 300th three-point field goal of his collegiate career. He scored nine points in the contest against the Spartans.

Zakai Zeigler led the Vols’ in scoring, totaling 17 points, while converting a career high five three-point attempts. He also recorded four assists and four steals. Dalton Knecht added 15 points, four rebounds and four assists for Tennessee.

Tobe Awaka finished with 10 points, 11 rebounds, three blocks and one steal. Josiah-Jordan James and Jahmai Mashack each scored eight points for Tennessee.

Tennessee forced the Spartans into 20 turnovers, while Norfolk State had one assist in the game.

5-star WR Mike Matthews sets commitment date

5-star Mike Matthews is a big in-state recruiting target for Georgia football.

Five-star wide receiver recruit Mike Matthews is ready to commit. Matthews plans to announce where he will play college football on July 19. The five-star is considering Georgia, Tennessee, USC and Clemson.

Matthews went on four official visits in June. Matthews visited Clemson on June 2, Georgia on June 9, USC on June 16 and Tennessee on June 23.

The Tennessee Volunteers are favored to land a commitment from Matthews.

The five-star prospect plays high school football for Parkview High School in Lilburn, Georgia. Matthews is the No. 13 player in the senior class and the fourth-ranked wide receiver. Matthews is the third-ranked recruit in Georgia, per 247Sports. He plays both defensive back and wide receiver for Parkview.

The 6-foot-2, 180-pound receiver also plays basketball. Matthews is a versatile athlete with excellent explosiveness. Matthews plans to play in the 2024 Under Armour All-America Game.

Impressively, the five-star holds a dual scholarship offer from the Auburn Tigers for both football and basketball. It is rare for recruits to earn dual scholarship offers.

As a wide receiver, Matthews shows great speed and acceleration. He is a good route runner and gets a lot of separation. His speed helps him accumulate yards after the catch. Matthews is a fluid athlete with a good chance of making it to the NFL.

Matthews locked in his commitment date via social media:

Ranking the five toughest offenses the Alabama defense will face in 2023

5 offenses that will challenge the Alabama defense most in 2023!

There is no denying the fact that under former defensive coordinator Pete Golding, Alabama had its fair share of ups and downs. Now, despite Golding moving on to Ole Miss, and the Crimson Tide losing some key pieces such as Will Anderson Jr., Brian Branch, and Jordan Battle, there seems to be a newfound sense of optimism for Alabama’s defense under the leadership of Kevin Steele.

As we inch closer and closer to the kickoff of the 2023 season, it’s time to take a closer look at each opponent and how Alabama matches up with them. Today, we look at the five toughest offenses that the Alabama defense will face in 2023.

Unlike 2022, Alabama will have the good fortune of playing all five of these opponents from the confines of Bryant-Denny Stadium.

Let’s roll!

REPORT: Michigan basketball misses out on another top transfer target

Wow, this is a big bummer.

Things continue to get worse for the Michigan basketball program.

Ever since Caleb Love, the former North Carolina star, was forced out and de-committed from the Wolverines due to credits not transferring, Michigan has been stuck with three open scholarship spots for 2023-’24 and it appears it’s still the case.

According to multiple reports on Monday, Twitter user Trilly Donovan was the first to report, Tennessee transfer Olivier Nkamhoua has officially eliminated Michigan from contention. The Finland native is down to Baylor and West Virginia.

On3’s Joe Tipton and Michigan insider Josh Henschke with Maize & Blue Review both confirmed the report.

This is a major blow for Michigan. Nkamhoua was long considered to be a Wolverines lean, especially before he opted to look towards professional basketball. But once the former Volunteer didn’t get an NBA Combine invite, Nkamhoua looked at all of his options, and apparently the Wolverines aren’t one any longer.

Nkamhoua is coming off of an official visit this past weekend in Ann Arbor and reports looked promising between the two after his visit. The Wolverines are now back to square one looking to add pieces from the transfer portal.

Michigan basketball to get a top transfer target on campus for visit

It’s significant to get this guy on campus!

Michigan basketball has three open scholarships for the 2023-24 season.

The Wolverines are working hard to land the former Toledo Rocket guard Rayj Dennis, and, hopefully, Michigan will know something on that front in the upcoming days.

Michigan is hoping to know something about another big target as well in the next few weeks. Tennessee transfer Olivier Nkamhoua announced he would take an official visit to Ann Arbor on June 2. Twitter user Trilly Donovan had the first scoop.

Nkamhoua was exploring the professional route but did not receive a combine invite. Now he is looking to go back to college for at least one more season. He also plans to visit West Virginia the weekend before going to Michigan.

Nkamhoua is a 6-foot-9 power forward but can also play the ‘3’ if needed. He is the 57th-ranked transfer in the portal according to 247Sports. Last season for the Volunteers, Nkamhoua averaged 10.8 points, five rebounds, shot 51.3% from the field and knocked down 33.3% of his 3s.

The Finland native has played four seasons with Tennessee and has seen a steady increase in the last two seasons. He has aspirations to play pro ball and with Michigan needing some scoring help, he could have a large role if he decides to play for Juwan Howard and the Wolverines.

Former Tennessee RB Len’Neth Whitehead transferring to Georgia

Former Tennessee, Athens Academy RB Len’Neth Whitehead is transferring home to UGA

Former Tennessee Volunteers running back Len’Neth Whitehead plans to transfer to the University of Georgia. Whitehead missed both the 2020 and 2022 college football seasons with injuries. In 2021, the former four-star recruit had 32 carries for 207 rushing yards and a pair of rushing touchdowns. Whitehead has one career reception for 10 yards.

Whitehead provides depth for the Georgia running back room, which is banged up.

The 6-foot-2, 220-pound running back may not be immediately eligible at Georgia. He could be a walk-on. Whitehead has three years of eligibility remaining, but he may not be able to suit up for the Bulldogs in 2023 because he is transferring within the conference and it is beyond the deadline for that. Whitehead entered the transfer portal in December.

Bryan Lynn-USA TODAY Sports

Whitehead played high school football at Athens Academy. Whitehead was the No. 143 recruit in the class of 2020, per 247Sports. Whitehead played both linebacker and running back in high school, but became a running back in college. Now, he returns home to Athens.

Whitehead missed the 2022 season with an upper body injury.

Whitehead is a taller running back. He has good speed and power. The Athens native is a good blocker, too. Here’s a look at highlights from his 2021 college football season:

Whitehead announced his return to Georgia via Twitter:
