Andy Reid, Brett Veach hopeful for Frank Clark’s future with Chiefs

While the #Chiefs need cap space, Andy Reid and Brett Veach are hopeful they can find a way to retain DE Frank Clark despite his cap hit in 2023.

One of the biggest decisions the Kansas City Chiefs will need to make ahead of the start of the new league year is regarding the status of veteran defensive end Frank Clark.

Clark reworked his contract a year ago in order to stay with the team in 2022, and the decision helped him to become a champion once again. This year, they’re again at a crossroads with his salary cap hit for the upcoming season. He’s one of the few players who is a realistic cut candidate in Kansas City as he’s due over $28.6 million in 2023.

Speaking to the media at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, Chiefs HC Andy Reid said he had a good talk with Clark at the end of the season. The two have a very close relationship and it’s clear that Reid would like to see him back, but Veach ultimately has the final say on the decision.

“I actually talked to him at the parade,” Reid said. “That’s where I ended up talking to him. He had to do some stuff for the actual exit physical, but I had a good talk with him. I love Frank Clark. It’s just Brett (Veach) has got to juggle all these different things going on, but Frank, he’s top-notch. I love him, I love him to death.”

Releasing Clark could free $21 million in salary cap space, which the team might need when push comes to shove. That said, Veach seemed optimistic that he and Clark’s representation could come to an amicable agreement that would be beneficial to both sides. That means keeping Clark in Kansas City and lowering his 2023 cap number.

“We’ll probably, to a certain extent, need some cap space,” Veach said. “We have a long history with (Frank Clark) and his agent (Erik Burkhardt) too. He’ll be one of the many conversations we have this week and look forward to getting with him and seeing if we can work something out that makes sense for both parties.”

Whether this materializes as a contract extension, reworked deal or something otherwise remains to be seen, but the subject will be broached between the front office and Clark’s representation this week at the combine.

Bradberry signed in Philadelphia for $7.5 million, turning that opportunity into an All-Pro season and a chance for a huge payday on the open market.

With the new league year fast approaching, here are 15 potential salary cap casualties the Eagles could target in NFL free agency.

Frank Clark overfilled with joy following Chiefs win in Super Bowl LVII

Frank Clark was overfilled with joy, delivering an emotional interview after the #Chiefs’ win over the #Eagles in Super Bowl LVII. | from @TheJohnDillon

In a season where he had been counted out and suspended, Kansas City Chiefs DE Frank Clark was overcome with emotion after the team’s Super Bowl win on Sunday night.

Speaking with Peter Schrager on the field just after the game, he made it clear that the wave of feelings he was experiencing wouldn’t be possible without his fellow Chiefs teammates and their belief in him.

“I’m just ecstatic, man,” Clark explained. “Just overfilled with joy, you know? I had a rough year, man. It’s been rough for me. My teammates, they never lost faith in me, man. I’m just thankful, just extremely humbled and thankful. I’m just thankful, I’ve got some of the best teammates in the world, bro. And just being able to come out here… a lot of adversity in the first half, to come out there in the second half and fix our mistakes and fix it, and we’re champs two times, man.”

Asked about how the win felt in the wake of losing family members in a 2018 housefire in Cleveland, Ohio, Clark was visibly emotional when talking about his late father, who he said was smiling on the team after the win.

“It’s a blessing, man,” Clark said, through tears. “I know my pops is smiling, man. I wish he could see it, but I know he’s smiling, man. I’ve been going through a lot the last few days, but it makes sense now, it makes sense bro.”

Clark was held at bay in Super Bowl LVII, as most defenders were on the slippery turf, but his spirit on the field was a key driver of the Chiefs’ defensive effort in the championship game. Given all of the adversity he has faced, both in 2022 and earlier in his career, it is safe to say that this win meant more to him than just a ring.

A tearful Frank Clark was profoundly sentimental during postgame speech after Chiefs’ Super Bowl win

Wow, this Frank Clark interview is powerful.

Kansas City Chiefs defensive end Frank Clark found a lot to be grateful for as his team won a second Super Bowl in the past four years over the Philadelphia Eagles.

FOX Sports reporter Peter Schrager caught up with an emotional Clark (whom Schrager dubbed “Mr. February”) after the big victory and talked with him about what the moment meant.

The Chiefs defensive star became overwhelmed with tears as he described how he feels his late father is smiling down on him and how he wishes his dad was there to celebrate the Super Bowl win with him.

Clark tragically lost his father, Frank Clark III, and three other family members in a 2018 house fire in Cleveland.

It’s hard not to feel deeply for Clark in this moment, a bittersweet one that he’ll remember for the rest of his life.

The joys of victory so often remind us of the painful losses we’ve suffered along the way, which makes us that much more grateful and reflective.

Clark’s tribute to his father was a powerful one, a reminder of why football always stretches far beyond the hash marks.
