Michigan football loses a prized 2024 edge rusher to Miami

Huge bummer.

Michigan football is still in the business of getting bad news on the recruiting trail, apparently.

The 2024 class got a little smaller on Saturday with a surprising defection. The maize and blue long trended for edge rusher Elias Rudolph, who had transferred to Deerfield Beach (Fla.) but was set to return to Cincinnati (Ohio) Taft. He returned to the Buckeye State to announce he would be playing for the Wolverines over Miami and Ohio State.

However, the Hurricanes had the last laugh, with Rudolph announcing just over a month after his commitment that he’s flipping to Miami after all.

Michigan is now down to 27 commits and will likely be in search of an edge rusher.

Miami and Michigan among 6 schools to add 4-star recruits this week

Six other schools have added blue chip recruits since then, though.

Normally a quiet time of year, this week has seen a flurry of activity on the recruiting circuit. The biggest prize so far has gone to Ohio State, who got a commitment from Chicago five-star DL Justin Scott on Sunday night.

Six other schools have added blue chip recruits since then, though. That includes a couple of edge prospects for both Miami and Michigan. Here’s a quick review of who they are and where they are headed at the next level.

Twitter reaction to 4-star Elias Rudolph Michigan football commitment

Will he be #Michigan’s next great edge rusher? #GoBlue

It’s been a tough few days for Michigan football on the recruiting trail.

After offensive tackle Michael Uini appeared destined to pick the maize and blue, he ultimately pledged to Georgia on Friday. The weekend ended with a shock, as Justin Scott — the five-star defensive tackle who appeared to be trending hard to Ann Arbor — chose rival Ohio State, despite the Buckeyes not even really appearing to be in contention for his services.

Tuesday offered a moment to get back on the right track, and the Wolverines did with 2024 Deerfield Beach (Fla.) four-star edge rusher Elias Rudolph committing to Michigan football over Ohio State, Miami, Pitt, and Penn State.

Here are the best reactions to the news as found on Twitter.

Michigan football secures commitment from 2024 4-star edge

Great get for #Michigan! #GoBlue

Michigan football is in need of a win.

Of course, we’re still two months away from the 2023 college football season. But over the weekend, the Wolverines, who were on a torrid start to the 2024 recruiting class, lost multiple prospects they had been in the running for.

The decisions of offensive tackle Michael Uini, defensive tackle Deyvid Palepale, cornerback Terhyon Nichols, safety Jordon Johnson-Rubell and cornerback Jameer Grimsley were mere preludes to the shocking loss of DT Justin Scott to Ohio State. Michigan had been considered in good standing with at least four of them.

The Wolverines gained some good recruiting news on Monday, however. 2024 Deerfield Beach (Florida) four-star edge rusher Elias Rudolph plays at Denard Robinson’s former high school, but he hails from Cincinnati. He was considered an Ohio State lean until he visited Ann Arbor, when he all but instantly eliminated the Buckeyes. His final decision was among Michigan, Miami and Pitt, and he chose to be a Wolverine.

He made the announcement live at Taft High School in Cincinnati.

Rudolph is listed as the No. 291 player in the country per the 247Sports composite. His highest ranking is from Rivals (219th overall). He stands 6 feet, 4 inches and 205 pounds. He had offers from Arkansas, Florida State, Georgia, Kentucky, Michigan State, Penn State, Tennessee and Texas A&M among others.

He’s the 25th pledge in the 2024 class for the Wolverines and the third edge joining Devon Baxter and Dominic Nichols.

Michigan football continuing to trend for elite 2024 edge target

Short wait to find out if he wears maize and blue! #GoBlue

Michigan football has some big-time prospects already committed to the 2024 recruiting class, but it’s looking to add more. One big name still on the board is Deerfield Beach (Florida) four-star edge rusher Elias Rudolph.

Hailing from the same high school as former Wolverines great Denard Robinson, Rudolph was long seen as an Ohio State lean before he eliminated the Buckeyes altogether. Now, Michigan appears to be in the pole position for the 6-foot-4, 205-pound edge. Following a blitz of 247Sports crystal ball predictions in the month of June, Rudolph picked up another on Sunday from a very noteworthy source.

When it comes to college football recruiting, there is perhaps no one more impeccable than 247Sports director of recruiting Steve Wiltfong. Wiltfong predicted that when Rudolph makes his decision, he’ll pledge to the maize and blue.

Rudolph has five 247Sports crystal ball predictions, all indicating Michigan will be his school of choice. He’ll make his college choice on July 3 and will choose among the maize and blue, Pitt and Miami.

Ohio State defensive end target cancels visit, will choose from three schools

On to the next one #GoBucks

It seemed like the stars had aligned with defensive end [autotag]Elias Rudolph[/autotag] to return back to Ohio and play his college football for [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag] after transferring to Deerfield Beach High School in Florida to finish his prep career.

The 6-foot, 4-inch and 205 edge rusher had set up an official visit to Columbus for this coming weekend, but that has been canceled as Rudolph announced the news on twitter.

Instead the 20th rated edge and 256th overall player according to the 247Sports composite will select from three schools: Michigan, Miami and Pittsburgh.

Although it may seem like a loss, the Buckeyes hosted multiple high level players at the same position as Rudolph over the past few weekends (Eddrick Houston and Marquise Lightfoot) and it seems like they’re higher on the Buckeye recruiting board than the former Ohioan.

2024 4-star edge sets commitment date, Michigan in final three, OSU out

#Michigan is looking real, real good here. #GoBlue

Four-star edge defender Elias Rudolph was recently in Ann Arbor for an official visit. From the way it looks, Rudolph had a great time, and the Wolverines appear to be trending for him.

On Monday, the one-time Cincinnati (Ohio) Taft football player announced he plans to commit on July 3. The kicker was Rudolph said he would not take his official visit to Ohio State this weekend. At one point, recruiting analysts were heavily picking Rudolph to go to the Buckeyes, and OSU was the main team the maize and blue needed to beat.

Rudolph later tweeted his final three was Michigan, Miami and Pittsburgh.

The 6-foot-4, 205-pound edge defender, who now plays in Deerfield Beach (Florida), is a four-star recruit according to the 247Sports composite. He is the 256th-ranked prospect in the class and the 20th-best edge in the 2024 cycle.

There are four crystal ball predictions in for Michigan and one for Ohio State — that’s not happening. And according to On3’s recruiting prediction machine, the Wolverines have a 91.1% chance of landing the highly touted edge rusher.

As of this writing, Michigan has 21 commitments in the class and zero edge rushers. However, the Wolverines are trending to land three-star edge Devon Baxter, who is set to announce his commitment on Monday night.

New predictions roll in for Michigan football recruiting in 2024

We’re getting a better idea of who will end up in this class. #GoBlue

Michigan football is working diligently on the recruiting trail, hosting camps this week before yet another big official visit weekend.

Last weekend featured a duo of five-stars making their way to campus as well as one of the top defensive backs in the state of Ohio. This week will see another top defensive back from the Buckeye state make his way to Ann Arbor.

Now that some prospects have managed to see everything Michigan has to offer, there appears to be movement in their recruitments.

The likely running back No. 2

2024 Longview (Texas) four-star running back Taylor Tatum, one of the top tailbacks in the country, had been trending to the maize and blue. However, USC upped the ante in its courtship of the elite runner, leading to the Wolverines seemingly pursuing Las Vegas (Nevada) Bishop Gorman three-star RB Micah Ka’apana with more vigor.

Ka’apana was on campus this past weekend and was getting buzz that he could end up in Ann Arbor sooner than later.

Well, there are more signs indicating he could wear a winged helmet, with The Michigan Insider’s Steve Lorenz and Sam Webb both putting in 247Sports crystal ball predictions on Thursday for Ka’apana to the Wolverines.

He has three predictions indicating Michigan will be the choice, with 247Sports director of recruiting Steve Wiltfong rounding out the prognostications.

Is a familiar pass catcher destined to come to Ann Arbor?

Michigan is already trending for Chicago-based wide receiver I’Marion Stewart (who will make his announcement on Friday), and has legacy Channing Goodwin — teammate of QB commit Jadyn Davis at Charlotte (N.C.) Providence Day — pledged. But Davis and Goodwin have a teammate that could also wear a winged helmet at the next level.

Jordan Shipp, a four-star rated No. 15 overall per the 247Sports composite, visited Ann Arbor on June 2, but he still had key visits on the horizon, particularly in-state North Carolina last weekend.

However, Steve Lorenz put in a prediction for Shipp to Michigan on Wednesday, and Brice Marich added to the chorus on Thursday.

Sam Webb put in a prediction on June 6.

Another Ohio native stolen from the Buckeyes?

After visiting Ann Arbor this past weekend, Cincinnati native Elias Rudolph, who now plays at Deerfield Beach (Florida), started to look less and less like a lock to Ohio State. So much so that the predictions have come pouring in for him to end up in Ann Arbor rather than Columbus.

Though Rudolph still has a prediction from Bucknuts’ Bill Kurelic to end up in scarlet and gray, he has three 247Sports crystal ball predictions to one that he’ll end up wearing maize and blue instead, as Steve Lorenz placed his bet on Michigan on Wednesday.

Is Michigan football poised to steal away an elite 2024 player Ohio State covets?

Will another Ohio native spurn the Buckeyes for #Michigan?

Ohio State has long tended to get what it wants. Whether it was in-state or otherwise, the Buckeyes usually have had the upper hand in recruiting, especially compared to Michigan football.

However, the times are changing.

Earlier this year, the college football landscape was stunned when the Wolverines stole four-star running back Jordan Marshall away from OSU when the Cincinnati-based tailback chose the maize and blue over the hometown scarlet and gray. As Michigan continues to make inroads with a few more Ohio natives, Bryce West and Aaron Scott (West took his official visit to Ann Arbor last week, while Scott arrives this week), there are some targets thought to be Buckeye locks that apparently the Wolverines have the key for.

Take Elias Rudolph, a defensive end from Deerfield Beach (Florida). Rated a four-star across the board with ESPN being highest at No. 150 overall, he has long been predicted to end up in Columbus according to the 247Sports crystal ball, dating to November, just days before The Game. However, in recent days, Michigan football has received two predictions he’ll end up wearing a winged helmet after all. The Michigan Insider’s Sam Webb and Brice Marich both prognosticating as such.

At 6 feet, 4 inches, 205 pounds, Rudolph has room to grow into his role at the next level, but it appears that following his official visit to Ann Arbor this past weekend, he’s more likely than not to do so while wearing a Michigan uniform.

What makes this a particularly notable coup is that Rudolph is actually an Ohio native, hailing from Cincinnati — like Marshall — despite playing in the state of Florida. He transferred to Deerfield Beach after attending Cincinnati (Ohio) Taft previously.

The Wolverines have a bevy of Ohio natives in the 2024 class. Marshall, OL Ben Roebuck, OL Luke Hamilton and DT Ted Hammond are committed.

OSU will have another chance to sway him, however, when it hosts Rudolph on an official visit this weekend. Pitt is the other school seemingly in contention for his services.

Rudolph is listed by 247Sports as the No. 17 edge and 38th-best player in the state of Florida.

Michigan football trending for multiple prospects following big recruiting weekend

Let’s get them!

Michigan had an enormous amount of talent on campus this weekend for official visits. The 2024 headliners on campus were five-star wide receiver Ryan Wingo and defensive lineman Justin Scott. While neither are trending toward Michigan, both appeared to have had a good time posting photos and tweeting with other Michigan recruits. It’s safe to say the Wolverines are still in the hunt for both.

The Wolverines came out of the weekend with one commitment — so far. Four-star DL Owen Wafle committed to the Wolverines on Sunday. Wafle was a previous Notre Dame commit and decided to come to Ann Arbor.

The Wolverines are also trending favorably for a few other players who were in Ann Arbor this past weekend. We looked at 247Sports and On3 to see what the recruiting analysts are saying.

Bennett Warren

The 6-foot-7, 330-pound offensive tackle has two more crystal ball predictions in favor of Michigan. Steve Wiltfong, the national recruiting analyst on 247Sports, put in one himself with a confidence level of ‘6’.

Warren now has three crystal balls in for the Wolverines and one for Texas A&M. He is 175th overall on the 247Sports composite and is the 13th-best offensive tackle.

The On3 recruiting prediction machine has Michigan leading over the Aggies. The Wolverines have an 80.9% chance to land Warren.

Deyvid Palepale

The 6-foot-3, 288-pound defensive lineman was already trending toward Michigan, and another crystal ball prediction came in on Sunday in favor of the Wolverines. He has two predictions for him to commit to Michigan.

Palepale is a three-star and the 756th-ranked prospect in 2024 according to the 247Sports composite.

Dominic Nichols

The 6-foot-5 edge rusher was on campus this weekend, and he gained another crystal ball prediction in favor of Michigan. However, on Friday a Wisconsin analyst put a crystal ball prediction in favor of the Badgers. It appears this is a Michigan and Wisconsin battle.

Nichols, a four-star, is the 429th-ranked prospect in the class and the 29th-best edge recruit in 2024 according to the 247Sports composite.

Elias Rudolph

The four-star edge rusher received his first crystal ball in favor of Michigan on Sunday. The Wolverines are battling Ohio State and Pittsburgh to land the Deerfield (Florida) native. There is also a crystal ball prediction for the Buckeyes to land Rudolph.

On3’s EJ Holland put in a prediction in favor of the Wolverines. Michigan has an 89.4% chance to land Rudolph according to the recruiting prediction machine via On3.

Rudolph is the 248th-ranked player in the class and the 20th-best edge defender on the 247Sports composite.
