Scouting report

Via 247Sports’ Blair Angulo:

A heady runner with an aggressive style, Kaapana doesn’t shy away from attacking gaps between the tackles and shows tremendous acceleration once he reaches the second level. In the high-profile matchup against powerhouse Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei, which featured several elite Power Five defenders, Kaapana averaged more than five yards per carry and flashed terrific vision and anticipation, waiting for lanes to develop before wiggling through traffic for positive gains.

Michigan football gets second 2024 running back commit

Twitter reactions: Michigan football lands a commitment from 2024 RB Micah Kaapana

He’s extremely underrated! #GoBlue

Michigan football received a commitment on Saturday, a day after the Wolverines landed four-star wide receiver I’Marion Stewart. This time, the maize and blue gained another running back when 2024 three-star Micah Kaapana chose Michigan over Hawaii, Nebraska and Oregon State.

According to the 247Sports composite, the 5-foot-11, 195-pound, back is the 733rd-ranked player in the 2024 cycle and the 55th-best running back. Kaapana plays for a national powerhouse in high school in Las Vegas (Nevada) Bishop Gorman.

As a junior, Kaapana rushed for 1,001 yards on just 70 carries. He also ran for 15 touchdowns last season. He produced 192 receiving yards and four scores.

Michigan has 21 commitments in the 2024 class, and Kaapana joins four-star Jordan Marshall as the two running back commitments for the Wolverines.

Here are the best Twitter reactions after Kaapana pledged to Michigan.

Michigan football gets second 2024 running back commit

The coaching staff loves this kid! #GoBlue

Michigan football shocked not only the rival Ohio State Buckeyes earlier this year, also much of the college football recruiting world when it secured a commitment from four-star Jordan Marshall, a running back from Cincinnati that OSU coveted in the worst way.

The Wolverines had long been looking for a second tailback to add in 2024. While Longview (Texas) four-star Taylor Tatum — thought to be the best RB in the class — was looking more and more like he could end up wearing maize and blue, there was another the staff was recruiting hard.

Hailing from powerhouse high school Las Vegas (Nevada) Bishop Gorman, Micah Ka’apana is only rated a three-star prospect, but the Wolverines see him as much higher than that. Rated No. 727 overall per the 247Sports composite, Ka’apana is the nation’s 57th-best running back.

On the heels of a successful official visit to Ann Arbor, Ka’apana shut down his recruitment and committed to Michigan football.

Ka’apana has offers from Oklahoma State, Nebraska, BYU, Arizona State, Utah and others.

He rushed for over 1,000 yards as a junior, averaging 14.3 yards per carry. He runs a reported 4.46-second 40-yard dash.

He is Michigan’s 20th commit, which keeps the Wolverines at No. 2 in the 2024 247Sports team rankings.

New predictions roll in for Michigan football recruiting in 2024

We’re getting a better idea of who will end up in this class. #GoBlue

Michigan football is working diligently on the recruiting trail, hosting camps this week before yet another big official visit weekend.

Last weekend featured a duo of five-stars making their way to campus as well as one of the top defensive backs in the state of Ohio. This week will see another top defensive back from the Buckeye state make his way to Ann Arbor.

Now that some prospects have managed to see everything Michigan has to offer, there appears to be movement in their recruitments.

The likely running back No. 2

2024 Longview (Texas) four-star running back Taylor Tatum, one of the top tailbacks in the country, had been trending to the maize and blue. However, USC upped the ante in its courtship of the elite runner, leading to the Wolverines seemingly pursuing Las Vegas (Nevada) Bishop Gorman three-star RB Micah Ka’apana with more vigor.

Ka’apana was on campus this past weekend and was getting buzz that he could end up in Ann Arbor sooner than later.

Well, there are more signs indicating he could wear a winged helmet, with The Michigan Insider’s Steve Lorenz and Sam Webb both putting in 247Sports crystal ball predictions on Thursday for Ka’apana to the Wolverines.

He has three predictions indicating Michigan will be the choice, with 247Sports director of recruiting Steve Wiltfong rounding out the prognostications.

Is a familiar pass catcher destined to come to Ann Arbor?

Michigan is already trending for Chicago-based wide receiver I’Marion Stewart (who will make his announcement on Friday), and has legacy Channing Goodwin — teammate of QB commit Jadyn Davis at Charlotte (N.C.) Providence Day — pledged. But Davis and Goodwin have a teammate that could also wear a winged helmet at the next level.

Jordan Shipp, a four-star rated No. 15 overall per the 247Sports composite, visited Ann Arbor on June 2, but he still had key visits on the horizon, particularly in-state North Carolina last weekend.

However, Steve Lorenz put in a prediction for Shipp to Michigan on Wednesday, and Brice Marich added to the chorus on Thursday.

Sam Webb put in a prediction on June 6.

Another Ohio native stolen from the Buckeyes?

After visiting Ann Arbor this past weekend, Cincinnati native Elias Rudolph, who now plays at Deerfield Beach (Florida), started to look less and less like a lock to Ohio State. So much so that the predictions have come pouring in for him to end up in Ann Arbor rather than Columbus.

Though Rudolph still has a prediction from Bucknuts’ Bill Kurelic to end up in scarlet and gray, he has three 247Sports crystal ball predictions to one that he’ll end up wearing maize and blue instead, as Steve Lorenz placed his bet on Michigan on Wednesday.

Michigan football gets 247Sports crystal ball prediction for 2024 3-star RB

Very interesting indeed. #GoBlue

Michigan football already has a four-star running back in the fold in 2024, but it’s looking to add to the commitment list.

The Wolverines had something of a coup in wresting Jordan Marshall away from Ohio State, despite Marshall being an Ohio native wanted by the Buckeyes in the worst way. The prevailing thought has been that the maize and blue would still work diligently to reel in Longview, Texas, four-star RB Taylor Tatum to join Marshall in Ann Arbor. Tatum has one 247Sports crystal ball prediction indicating he’ll end up a Wolverine.

But what if it’s not Tatum? What if it’s another player from a powerhouse high school?

Micah Kaapana might not have the accolades Tatum does, but he hails from Las Vegas (Nevada) Bishop Gorman, one of the nation’s premier high school programs. Rated a three-star overall and No. 710 in the country per the 247Sports composite, Kaapana received a 247Sports crystal ball indicating Michigan football will be his school of choice.

While it’s likely to be either Kaapana or Tatum, not both, if one trends more to Ann Arbor, it puts more pressure on the other to make a decision.

Michigan only recently offered Kaapana, despite the long pursuit of Tatum.

The prediction that came in via 247Sports was director of recruiting Steve Wiltfong, who put in a confidence level of six. Kaapana appears to also be heavily favoring Oklahoma State, but he also has offers from Utah, Nebraska, BYU, Washington State, Arizona State and others.

Michigan football offers 2024 3-star RB from powerhouse West Coast high school

Interesting offer given the board. #GoBlue

There have been a lot of big-time players who have hailed from Las Vegas (Nev.) Bishop Gorman. Namely quarterbacks Tate Martell and Dorian Thompson-Robinson.

The Wolverines already have one big-time running back committed in Cincinnati (Ohio) Moeller four-star Jordan Marshall, who was atop rival Ohio State’s board, and have been hot and heavy in pursuit of Texas-based four-star Taylor Tatum — who has one Michigan football prediction via the 247Sports Crystal Ball.

But it appears Mike Hart is seeking more bodies in the offensive backfield. Taking to Twitter, it appears that Hart was intrigued by Bishop Gorman prospect, as he offered three-star tailback Micah Kaapana on Saturday.

Kaapana has offers from schools such as BYU and Utah and he’s listed at 5-foot-11, 180-pounds. He’s rated by the 247Sports Composite as the No. 612 player in the country, the 51st-ranked running back in 2024, and the third-best player in the state of Nevada.
