Giants sign CB Azizi Hearn, CB Ekow Boye-Doe to practice squad

The New York Giants have signed two cornerbacks to their practice squad — Azizi Hearn and Ekow Boye-Doe.

With injuries plaguing their secondary, the New York Giants added a pair of insurance bodies on Wednesday, signing cornerbacks Azizi Hearn and Ekow Boye-Doe to their practice squad.

Art Stapleton of USA TODAY was the first to report the transactions.

The 6-foot-1, 204-pound Hearn was originally signed by the Las Vegas Raiders as an undrafted rookie free agent out of UCLA in 2023.

In addition to the Raiders, the 25-year-old Hearn has also made pitstops with the New England Patriots and Carolina Panthers, spending time on their respective practice squads. He has never taken a regular season snap in the NFL.

Boye-Doe, 25, signed with the Kansas City Chiefs as an undrafted rookie free agent out of Kansas State following the 2023 NFL draft.

The 6-foot, 177-pound Boye-Doe has appeared in six career games, primarily on special teams, but has not registered any statistics. However, he did pick up a Super Bowl LVIII championship ring as a member of the Chiefs.

Both players will be eligible for elevation in Week 16 should the Giants need the help.

Giants place Tre Hawkins on IR, sign four to practice squad

The New York Giants have placed CB Tre Hawkins on injured reserve, signed four to the practice squad, and made several other transactions.

As anticipated, the New York Giants made a flurry of roster moves on Tuesday after suffering a glut of injuries in Sunday’s 14-11 loss to the New Orleans Saints.

Cornerback Tre Hawkins, who had a breakout performance in Week 14, was placed on injured reserve (IR) with a fractured lumbar spine. Although the injury will end his season, it does not require surgery.

The Giants also placed center Jimmy Morrissey on practice squad IR.

With Hawkins on IR, cornerback Greg Stroman, who was elevated against the Saints, was signed from the practice squad to the 53-man roster.

Finally, to fill out the reserve unit, the Giants added four players to the practice squad—two veteran signings and two standard signings.

Quarterback Tim Boyle, as expected, was re-signed. Also added were defensive lineman Ross Blacklock, and cornerbacks Ekow Boye-Doe and Azizi Hearn.

Blacklock was originally a second-round pick of the Houston Texans in the 2020 NFL draft. However, he quickly became a journeyman, making stops with the Minnesota Vikings, Jacksonville Jaguars, Indianapolis Colts, and Tennessee Titans.

In 44 career games, the 26-year-old Blacklock has recorded 40 tackles (27 solo, five for a loss), one forced fumble, two passes defensed, nine QB hits, and 3.0 sacks.

Boye-Doe and Hearn have little to no regular season experience.

Chiefs release former Kansas State standout Ekow Boye-Doe

The #Chiefs released former Kansas State standout Ekow Boye-Doe on Tuesday. | from: @EdEastonJr

On Tuesday, the Kansas City Chiefs made a roster move that hit close to home for local fans.

According to the Kansas City Star’s Sam McDowell, the Chiefs have released cornerback Ekow Boye-Doe as part of the team’s roster trimming before the start of the regular season.

Boye-Doe stood out at Kansas State for the Wildcats but went undrafted in April. The Chiefs signed him, allowing him to make the team out of training camp as he impressed coaches with his effort.

The undersized defensive back brought constant energy to the team throughout training camp, but his lack of experience and the Chiefs’ depth at cornerback didn’t work in his favor during roster cuts.

If Boye-Doe clears waivers, he should have a good chance to make Kansas City’s practice squad, where he could remain with the organization and continue his development. He finished the preseason with seven tackles, playing in the secondary and on special teams.

8 studs from Chiefs win vs. Cardinals in preseason Week 2

These eight players were among the #Chiefs’ top performers against the #Cardinals on Saturday.

The Kansas City Chiefs secured their first win of the 2023 preseason against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday, managing to redeem themselves after suffering a heartbreaking loss to the New Orleans Saints in Week 1.

While the preseason victory won’t count toward their effort to get back to the Super Bowl, the progress that Kansas City made against Arizona is sure to help the Chiefs as the regular season inches closer.

Several of the team’s lesser-known players stood out in the fantastic effort against Arizona and may have helped their case to earn a roster spot ahead of the NFL’s cut day later in August.

Check out which Chiefs put together the best performance against the Cardinals on Saturday:

10 Chiefs with the most to prove in Kansas City’s preseason matchup vs. Saints

These 10 #Chiefs have the most to prove in Kansas City’s preseason kickoff against the #Saints on Sunday.

The Kansas City Chiefs intend to defend their Super Bowl LVII title in 2023 and are in the process of determining which players belong on their 53-man roster ahead of the new season. Preseason exhibitions are an ideal time for younger athletes to make their case for a spot on the team, and several Chiefs will have something to prove ahead of Kansas City’s kickoff on Sunday against the New Orleans Saints.

Guys like Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, Creed Humphrey, and L’Jarius Sneed have nothing to fear heading into the highly anticipated preseason matchup, but others will be fighting for their jobs in the Big Easy. Expectations are high for the Chiefs, and they can’t afford to keep anyone who hasn’t proven to be the best of the best if they want to win a second straight championship.

Here are 10 players who have the most to prove in Kansas City’s tilt against New Orleans on Sunday:

Chiefs rookie class: Grading their training camp performance

Check out our grades for all of the #Chiefs’ top rookies through two weeks of training camp practices.

The Kansas City Chiefs’ 2023 rookie class has shown flashes of brilliance at the team’s training camp in St. Joseph, Missouri. Second-round wide receiver Rashee Rice has the deepest highlight reel of the group through two weeks of practices, but others like Keondre Coburn, Nic Jones, and Felix Anudike-Uzomah have been standout performers at their respective positions.

A few undrafted players have also stood out for the team in workouts, particularly running back Deneric Prince and receiver Nikko Remigio.

Chiefs UDFA Spotlight: Kansas State CB Ekow Boye-Doe

Our #Chiefs UDFA Spotlight series continues with a Lawrence, Kansas native who played college ball in Manhattan, Kansas.

Ekow Boye-Doe played for Lawrence High School in Lawrence, Kansas, earning a three-star rating in his recruitment. He received offers from Kansas, Missouri State, Tulane, UNI and Kansas State, choosing to join the Wildcats in 2018.

A multi-year starter with Kansas State, Boye-Doe established himself as an instrumental piece of the team’s defense opposite Julius Brents and Josh Hayes.

Chiefs Check-in: Kansas City adds second rookie K-State defender

Kansas City added their second Kansas State defender of the offseason on Monday. That and more on today’s edition of #Chiefs Check-in:

The Kansas City Chiefs seem to have liked what they saw from the Kansas State Wildcats’ defense last season after signing their second player from the unit on Monday. They drafted edge rusher Felix Anudike-Uzomah in the first round back in April and followed up that bold move by inking fellow Manhattan product Ekow-Boye Doe to a deal following an impressive tryout last week.

Check out the other moves made by the Chiefs and other teams around the league below, and all other NFL news relevant for the morning of Tuesday, May 16th:

Chiefs waive Missouri State WR Ty Scott

The #Chiefs have waived an undrafted wide receiver from Missouri State to make room for their latest signing.

The Kansas City Chiefs have waived another undrafted free agent that was signed following the 2023 NFL draft.

According to the NFL’s personnel notice for Monday, the Chiefs have waived Missouri State WR Tyrone “Ty” Scott. This is the corresponding move to make room for Kansas State CB Ekow Boye-Doe, who was signed after a tryout invite at the team’s rookie minicamp from May 6-8.

The 24-year-old Scott, listed at 6-foot-2 and 199 pounds, was coming off a 2022 campaign at Missouri State where he recorded 48 receptions, 674 receiving yards and five touchdowns. He joined the Bears in 2021 after spending time at Central Michigan.

Scott is now the fourth undrafted free agent the team signed following the 2023 NFL draft to be waived by the team. He joins his Missouri State teammate Montrae Braswell, Tarleton State OL Blake Haynes and Missouri S Martez Manuel, who’ve all been released in the time following rookie minicamp.

This transaction now brings the roster back to 90 players. If the Chiefs want to make any other signings ahead of OTAs next week, they’ll need to make a corresponding roster move to create room on the 90-man offseason roster.

Chiefs sign Kansas State CB Ekow-Boye Doe following rookie minicamp tryout

Following reports that he was receiving interest after #Chiefs rookie minicamp, Kansas State CB Ekow Boye-Doe has now signed with the team.

[connatix div_id=”3f8b015acdd24c648befc5d5dac47469″ player_id=”afe1e038-d3c2-49c0-922d-6511a229f69c” cid=”7cbcea0d-4ce2-4c75-9a8d-fbe02a192c24″]

The Kansas City Chiefs have officially signed Kansas State CB Ekow Boye-Doe according to his agency, VMG Sports.

Boye-Doe was an undrafted free agent tryout with the Chiefs at their rookie minicamp from May 6-8. It was reported that he was receiving interest from Kansas City afterward, so much so that he canceled another tryout with the Washington Commanders at their minicamp.

The 6-foot and 170-pound cornerback appeared in 42 games with 35 career starts for the Wildcats. Last season, he started opposite Indianapolis Colts draft pick Julius Brents. Boye-Doe recorded 26 total tackles, five passes defended, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

Boye-Doe previously attended the team’s local pro day. He was also one of the players we considered a standout at the Chiefs’ rookie minicamp last weekend. Take a look at what we said:

Boye-Doe didn’t record an interception this week, but he was very active in recording pass breakups and passes defended throughout the weekend. Arrowhead Pride’s Pete Sweeney reported that one of his pass breakups even drew verbal praise from defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo that could be heard by media members. I just wonder if Boye-Doe managed to do enough given how competitive the cornerback position is in Kansas City.

The team’s roster is currently at 90 players, so the Chiefs will need to make a corresponding roster move in order to make room for Boye-Doe. He also might not be the only tryout player with a pending deal.

Update: Missouri State WR Ty Scott was released to make room for Boye-Doe.
