Chiefs, 49ers have 5 former Dolphins in Super Bowl 58

Former Dolphins looking to win a Super Bowl on Sunday.

The Miami Dolphins were eliminated from the postseason following their 27-6 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs back in the divisional round, so it’s been some time since they last played football.

While Dolphins fans prepare for the offseason, there are a number of former Dolphins who are still playing for a Super Bowl championship that they can support.

This Sunday, the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers are set to battle in a Super Bowl matchup, where one team will walk out with a Lombardi Trophy, and there are five former Dolphins on their rosters and practice squads.

Here’s a look at which players who once donned the aqua and orange will play in this one:

Chiefs release running back La’Mical Perine

The Kansas City Chiefs made another roster move to address their running back depth, making the chart more straightforward for the season.

According to the Kansas City Star’s Sam McDowell, the Chiefs have released running back La’Mical Perine as part of the team’s roster trimming before the start of the regular season. Perine signed with the Chiefs in January of 2023 as part of the practice squad ahead of the team’s Super Bowl LVII victory.

Perine has spent time previously on practice squads for the Philadelphia Eagles and Miami Dolphins. He started his career with the New York Jets in 2020 as a fourth-round pick, with his rookie season with 64 carries for 232 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns being the best output for his career.

Perine made a significant impact during his time in Kansas City as he showed promise in training camp and during the preseason. He collected 97 yards on 16 rushing attempts across the three games.

WATCH: Chiefs RB La’Mical Perine scores touchdown vs. Browns

After breaking off a long run earlier in the game, #Chiefs RB La’Mical Perine found the end zone on this spectacular play against the #Browns.

After breaking off a long run earlier in the first half against the Cleveland Browns, Kansas City Chiefs running back La’Mical Perine scored an amazing touchdown late in the second quarter to get his team back within striking range heading into halftime.

Perine’s exceptional touchdown scamper came after he caught a pass from quarterback Blaine Gabbert just outside of the red zone as Kansas City drove down the field against the Browns’ impressive defense.

He broke three tackles on his way to paydirt and scored despite the flag that came in near the end of his nifty run. This touchdown cut Kansas City’s deficit to just six points after they were down by 19 points earlier in the game.

Perine has been among the Chiefs’ most productive players in this matchup and may have earned himself a spot on Kansas City’s 53-man roster after proving his worth with this marvelous performance.

WATCH: Chiefs RB La’Mical Perine rips off long run vs. Browns

#Chiefs RB La’Mical Perine ripped off this big run to help Kansas City’s offense get on track against the #Browns.

La’Mical Perine has quietly put together an exceptional preseason resume with the Kansas City Chiefs in August and might be the front-runner to land a spot as the team’s fourth running back ahead of September’s regular season kickoff.

He ripped off an exceptional run in the first quarter of Kansas City’s preseason finale against the Cleveland Browns, gaining 30 yards to help the Chiefs offense get back on track after going down by 19 points early in the game.

This play could go a long way toward helping the Chiefs come back from the three-score deficit in the second quarter and may help build momentum for Kansas City before halftime.

While it won’t count toward his regular-season stats, efforts like this are a great sign for the Chiefs’ backfield as the team’s coaching staff assesses their options for the 2023 campaign. Though Perine isn’t a household name at this point in his career, he’ll have a chance to contribute to the NFL’s most feared offense if he earns a spot on Kansas City’s 53-man roster.

8 studs from Chiefs win vs. Cardinals in preseason Week 2

These eight players were among the #Chiefs’ top performers against the #Cardinals on Saturday.

The Kansas City Chiefs secured their first win of the 2023 preseason against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday, managing to redeem themselves after suffering a heartbreaking loss to the New Orleans Saints in Week 1.

While the preseason victory won’t count toward their effort to get back to the Super Bowl, the progress that Kansas City made against Arizona is sure to help the Chiefs as the regular season inches closer.

Several of the team’s lesser-known players stood out in the fantastic effort against Arizona and may have helped their case to earn a roster spot ahead of the NFL’s cut day later in August.

Check out which Chiefs put together the best performance against the Cardinals on Saturday:

Dolphins elevate OL and RB ahead of wild-card game

This could mean bad news on one of the three questionable tackles.

Heading into their Sunday afternoon, win-and-advance matchup with the Buffalo Bills, the Miami Dolphins have brought up some help from the practice squad.

Miami elevated offensive lineman Lester Cotton and running back La’Mical Perine on Saturday.

Perine joins Jeff Wilson Jr. and Salvon Ahmed on the active roster for the weekend with Raheem Mostert out due to a broken thumb. Wilson and Ahmed have both been solid in their action this season, so it’s likely that Perine would only see the field if one of them were to go down.

For Cotton, his elevation could mean bad news for the offensive line. Offensive tackles Terron Armstead, Kendall Lamm and Brandon Shell are all questionable with injuries, and left guard Liam Eichenberg was recently downgraded from doubtful to out due to a hand injury.

While Cotton has only played guard at the NFL level, he could fill in for Eichenberg or Robert Hunt, allowing one of them to kick out to tackle.

Dolphins work out 4 running backs on Tuesday

They did end up signing one.

After releasing ZaQuandre White from their practice squad on Monday, the Miami Dolphins decided to fill that open spot with another running back.

The team ended up signing former New York Jets running back La’Mical Perine, but they also had three others in on Tuesday to vie for the practice squad role – Nate McCrary, Abram Smith and Antonio Williams.

Williams went undrafted back in 2020 out of North Carolina. He spent his first two seasons with the Buffalo Bills and then part of this season with the New York Giants. In his NFL career, he’s rushed for 63 yards and two touchdowns on 5.3 yards per attempt.

Smith went undrafted this year after a college career at Baylor that saw him run for 1,647 yards and 13 touchdowns on 6.1 yards per carry. He signed with the New Orleans Saints after the draft but was waived during roster cuts.

McCrary was undrafted in 2021 out of powerhouse Saginaw Valley State. He’s bounced around between the Baltimore Ravens and Denver Broncos since entering the league, recording just two carries for -1 yard.

Perine ended up being the pick, but if Miami is in need of another practice squad back, keep these names in mind.

Dolphins sign RB La’Mical Perine to practice squad

He’ll take ZaQuandre White’s spot.

After the Miami Dolphins released undrafted rookie running back ZaQuandre White from the practice squad on Monday, the team had an open spot to fill.

On Tuesday, they elected to fill it with another running back, La’Mical Perine. The 24-year-old spent the first two seasons of his career with the New York Jets before joining the Philadelphia Eagles practice squad earlier this year.

Perine has appeared in 14 games in his NFL career, rushing for 263 and two touchdowns on 3.7 yards per attempt and adding another 63 yards on 11 receptions.

The former Florida Gator will be a decent depth piece for Mike McDaniel’s team in case they run into some injuries at the position.

Fantasy football: 5 sleepers to start, 5 starters to sit in Week 7

Fantasy football starters sits sleepers for Week 7.

The best medicine for a fantasy football win each week could be simple: Setting the right lineup. Nothing worse than having a guy on the bench going off or someone in your starting lineup that’s laid a dud.

With that, here are five sleepers to start and five starters to sit in fantasy football Week 7:

Sleepers to start

Texans wide receiver Brandin Cooks. Credit: Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

QB Joe Burrow, Bengals

vs. Browns

Joe Burrow’s off to a decent start, and he’s racking up 300-yard games. Of those, his best of the year came in Week 2, also against the Browns, when he had 316 yards and three touchdowns.

RB Antonio Gibson, Washington

vs. Cowboys

Despite his last two outings being averages of 3.3 and 2.5 yards per carry, Antonio Gibson and Washington have a good matchup this week: The Cowboys. They’re the second-worst run defense in the NFL, allowing 173.3 yards per game on the ground.

RB La’Mical Perine, Jets

vs. Bills

Without Le’Veon Bell, La’Mical Perine had a season-high nine touches last week and that could stand to rise in Week 7 against the Bills. The Jets will probably be trailing, but the Bills did just allow 245 rushing yards last week against the Chiefs. Granted, KC is much better, but 245 is awful.

WR Brandin Cooks, Texans

vs. Packers

The Packers are going to want to get right on offense and put up some points in this one following a dud in Week 6. That could mean a lot of throwing on both sides. Brandin Cooks has come all the way back from his slow start.

WR Christian Kirk, Cardinals

at Seahawks

Similar to Cooks, Christian Kirk got off to a slow start and has heated up. That hit a fever pitch last week with two touchdowns. Now this week, even with other weapons around him on the Cardinals, Kirk will probably have another solid game because the Seahawks have allowed the most points to opposing WRs in fantasy this year.
